As our tenth year of Summer Seals Camp begins, we are off to a DINOmite start! This year, Susquehanna graduate and returner, Morgan Whiteman and Susquehanna junior, Kelsey Kline are teaching twenty rising third and fourth graders. Susquehanna graduate, Ryan Pelletier and Susquehanna senior, Mackenna Bagley are teaching ten rising fifth graders. We are preparing for an actionpacked summer filled with dinosaur discoveries, weather exploration and Olympic game competitions! This past week students returned to prehistoric times to learn all about the dinosaurs! The fourth and fifth graders have been reading Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope Osborne and the third graders have been reading Don’t Disturb the Dinosaurs by Ada Hopper. Summer Seals wear their fossil necklaces and prepare their dinosaur eggs. Summer Seals also learned about how dinosaur bones were preserved by talking about fossils. Seals made fossil necklaces and special scented dinosaur eggs that would work great for a fizzy dinosaur bath. They will soon finish reading the books, Dinosaurs Before Dark and Don’t Disturb the Dinosaurs!

After many dinosaur discoveries, students enjoyed an afternoon cooling off at the local dinosaur watering hole, the Selinsgrove Pool! The Summer Seals enjoyed spending time with their friends and teachers and practicing a skill of any great SEAL, their swimming abilities!

As the 2016 Summer Seals Camp experience continues, the students have spent their last few days engaged in many DIN-amic opportunities. Students learned about the size, color and physical characteristics of these prehistoric creatures by creating balloon dinosaurs and making colorful dinosaur headpieces. Summer Seals demonstrate how there were dinosaurs in many shapes, colors and sizes.

Next Friday, the Summer Seals will have the opportunity to visit Reptiland and participate in the Jurassic Era experience, “Dinosaurs Come to Life”! They will see representations of many different dinosaur species. The favorite, Giganoto-saurus, will roar to life, as well as several new dino-saurs including Diablo-ceratops and Sarcosuchus.

They will also have the chance to see many different types of exotic reptiles and amphibians. This will be a great way for them to see their learning come to life and to be able to apply their knowledge of dinosaurs to the development of other species!

Mustard Seed Clothing Drive

Each year many different community businesses help to support the Summer Seals Camp and we are so grateful for their contributions! To show our appreciation, we will again be collecting lightly used clothing for The Mustard Seed. We will be accepting donations at Seals Camp headquarters located in the intermediate school! Clothing may be dropped off between 8am and 3pm Monday through Thursday until Thursday, July 14th. Thank you again for all of your support for this worthy cause!

Summer Seals make their own thermometers with the help of Ms. Kline. Summer Seals also had a special visit from Susquehanna University professor, Dr. David McLaughlin. Students participated in three learning centers: discovering plasma and the properties of electricity, learning about safety practices concerning lightning and making their own thermometers!

The Summer Seals greatly appreciated the expertise of Dr. McLaughlin and loved learning about how plasma and electricity are related. They have had an enlightening experience so far this summer and there are many sparks of learning to come! Dr. McLaughlin demonstrates properties of electricity with Summer Seals.

The Summer Seals had a great time exploring Reptiland and got up close and personal with animatronic replicas of many of the dinosaurs that they had studied, even one that blew water at them! They also participated in two shows: Ruling Reptiles and Lizards and Snakes, Alive! Another highlight of

the trip was visiting Parakeet Landing! The Seals walked through an open exhibit of hundreds of parakeets and some of the students even had a chance to hold and feed the birds! This was an experience that the Seals will never forget!

Summer Seals have ventured away from the lands of prehistoric dinosaurs to go on a storm-chasing adventure! This week they began learning about various weather patterns. They made cotton models of different types of cloud formations to show how storms can develop. Summer Seals learn how to stay safe in a lightning storm with Ms. Bagley.

Summer Seals enjoy spending time on the beach and finding seashells. They reflected on the beauty of the surroundings while relaxing on the dock and found lots of live clams in the water! Inspired by their experiences in nature, they spent some time doing sensory journaling and thinking about their role in the environment.

As we celebrate an important milestone for the Summer Seals Day Camp, we hope that you will join us for an extra special 10-year celebration! Postcard invitations have been sent out and RSVPs are requested via email to Liz Grove at [email protected] by July 28th.

It will be an evening of family fun, good food and special remarks from our keynote speaker, Kendra Aucker, President and CEO of Evangelical Community Hospital. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Rotary Field from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm on August 4th!

July 11 - 14

As the Summer Seals continued their study of weather, they couldn’t have had a more beautiful day to visit Pinto Bay! The Seals participated in several different activities. They studied and identified different types of pond creatures, decorated seashells and built sandcastles. Ms. Whiteman helping students to step out of their comfort zones.

Summer Seals race on to many exciting opportunities! In the spirit of this year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the Summer Seals learned about the Games and trained for their own version of the competition.

After making torches and olive wreathes, the Summer Seals spent a little time out in the stadium discovering more about different sports that are featured in the Olympics, such as the shot put. They competed in a variety of events and earned medals for their efforts. Summer Seals proudly display their Olympic medals!

They will be able to participate in several hands-on activities, for example, deciding on what supplies that they would need in order to be safe in a big storm and discovering the job of meteorologists and how they broadcast weather reports!

more than 20 cars and 2 motorcycles to earn more than $300.00 to help supplement summer camp opportunities! Each team had certain tasks to do such as washing, drying, and holding posters and signs. All of the students put forth their best effort and helped each other. The success of the car wash throughout the last several years is

due in large part to the help and support of parents, sponsors, and community members who donated supplies, brought their cars to be washed or just spread the word. Thank you so much for continuing to support this yearly camp event!

The Summer Seals learned many important lessons in teamwork and service to the community while working at the 8th Annual Summer Seals Car Wash on Thursday, July 28th. The Seals enjoyed being outside in the beautiful weather and worked in teams to wash

As Summer Seals Camp comes to a close, students reflected on all of the great experiences that they have had with their friends and teachers.

The summer was filled with exciting discoveries and many opportunities to learn new things.

The evening was highlighted by remarks from president, Michael Hayes, vice president, Mike Piecuch, secretary, Dottie Anderson and an inspiring Keynote speech by Kendra Aucker, President and CEO of Evangelical Community Hospital. The Patterson Media Team also presented a special 10th anniversary video, which can be viewed at www.summerseals.org.

Previous camper, Kayleen Long and her family members, Amanda Bielskie and Patti Miller also spoke about the impact that the program had in their lives. In keeping with tradition, the night ended with the graduation of the 2016 campers and they received seedlings to remind them of their growth and learning.

The tenth anniversary celebration of the Summer Seals Day Camp was a tremendous tribute to all of the students, families and teachers who have participated in the program throughout the last ten years and to all of the community members and sponsors who have helped the program to thrive. It truly is a collaborative community effort.

A Special Summer Seals thank you is extended to all of you who attended the anniversary celebration and all of those who helped to make it such a memorable night for all of the students, families, teachers, community supporters and board members. We cannot express enough our appreciation and gratitude!
