Programme Objective The increase in production of electricity from renewable sources leads to periods of oversupply, in particular during the daytime: When the sun shines, photovoltaic systems – with total installed capacity amounting to 40,782 megawatts (MW) by the end of November 2016 – generate more electric power than can be absorbed in the regional grids. This summer school is centered around the scientific question of whether high penetration of distributed generation, such as rooftop solar ins- tallations or wind power, would make the electrical distribution system unreliable or unstable. In order to reap the full potential of renewable, environmentally friendly solar and wind power and to reduce investments in wide-area grids and transportation losses, we need to improve the balance between supply and demand at local or regional level. This is the goal of smart power grids and virtual power plants. Summer School Smart Electrical Power Systems Academic Staff The E.ON Energy Research Center (ERC) of RWTH Aachen University, including the Institute for Power Generation and Storage Systems (PGS), the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA), the Chair and Institute of Power Systems and Power Economics (IAEW), is respon- sible for the academic content of the „Smart Electrical Power Systems“ Summer School and conduct the programme’s lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes. Applicant‘s Profile This programme is especially designed for B.Sc./B.E. students enrolled at top universities. Applicants need proficient knowledge of the English language and should be studying Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Basic understanding of electrochemical systems as well as electri- city systems and their components will be expected. The RWTH International Academy Summer School offers a truly dynamic and engaging academic and cultural environment for its international visitors. Through its academic summer course offer in the charming historic city of Aachen, the top-ranked RWTH Aachen University invites students to take part in state-of-the-art and hands-on approaches to technical learning at one of Europe’s leading science and research institutions. Our summer courses provide a fantastic opportunity to experience what studying at RWTH Aachen University is really like.
