I know a place you can go to make your family happy! On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, Room 20 went to J’s Sports Restaurant to interview their chefs. I interviewed Chef Eric Martin. His mom inspired him to cook when he was six years old. He learned how to be a chef at culinary school in Fresno. One day, Chef Eric would like to be the boss at a restaurant. J’s Sports Restaurant was a great place to visit!

Her mother inspired her to become a chef. She loves making food for other people. Chef Teresa has been cooking for a long time. She really likes to cook at J’s Sports Restaurant. The food is wonderful there!

There is a great place in town to take your family to dinner! On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, Room 20 went to J’s Sports Restaurant to interview their chefs. I interviewed Chef Sammy. He is the executive chef of the restaurant. He makes the menu and the schedule for the other people that work at the restaurant. He makes sure the food is good and it is done fast.

He started to cook at Klein’s Truck Stop. He started in 1979 in the restaurant business. He went to school in Napa Valley at the Culinary Institute of America. His mom taught him to cook when he was young and this makes him very comfortable being in the kitchen. He loves cooking food. It is his calling. Meeting Chef Sammy was a wonderful experience!

World’s Best Chef at J’sAn Interview with Dr. Cecelia Galindo

Do doctors help us? On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, the Summer School Eagles went by bus to McDonald’s to meet and interview Dr. Cecelia Galindo.

Dr. Galindo is an internal medicine specialist who sees adults with illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems. One of the most challenging patients she had was an older man that was collecting fluid in his body. It was very hard to regulate his sugars because he was already very sick.

As a child, Dr. Galindo remembers when her mom smashed her finger in a door. She saw the doctors repair her mom’s finger in the hospital and that inspired her to be a doctor. Helping others is what Dr. Galindo loves about being a doctor.

It took Dr. Galindo 12 years to finish her education and has been a doctor for 13 years. The hardest part of being a doctor for her is the time that she is away from her kids. When we asked her for advice, she said, “Follow your dreams, work hard, don’t listen to others, and believe in yourself.”

Then we wanted to know when did he first become an athlete and he said it was when he was seven or eight years old. Continuing on, we asked him when does he practice, and he said, “I practice Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30.” He also added that he competes in tournaments all over California.

Finally, we asked him, “Where do you want to go to college?” and he said, “Oregon State, and I just signed this weekend!” Marcus finished his interview by saying, “Sports are important because: you’ll be more involved in school, stay out of trouble, and be motivated to keep your grades up.”

After our interview, Coach Lichtenwaldt gave us a tour of the weight training room. My group and I were amazed to see so much equipment and how big the room was. Next we went to the track and field area. The track is one of only a few valley schools to have artificial turf. Coach Lichtenwaldt decided to give us a feel for what the athletes do so he lined us all up and had us race. Finally, we were given a brief tour of the aquatic center. The center has two swimming pools, one shallow and the other, deeper and larger.

By the time 11:00 a.m. had rolled around, we had interviewed Dinuba High School’s top track and field athletes and got to see the weight room. In addition, we got to race on the track, and had the opportunity to visit the aquatic center. Now I can’t wait to become a Dinuba Emperor myself.

Meet the athletes! On June 17th, 2013 we, room 36 of the Summer School Eagle, were invited to interview the track and field team and tour the athletic department at Dinuba High School.

At the Dinuba High School gymnasium, we met Coach Lichtenwaldt and Dinuba High School’s top track and field athletes. Our interview was held on Monday, June 17th, 2013 and began at 10:00 a.m. First we were put into groups with the athletes, three students to one athlete. My group and I were looking forward to the opportunity to interview a junior athlete named Marcus McMaryion.

Our first question for Marcus was, “Who is his your favorite athlete?” and he replied, “My favorite athlete is my dad because he played sports in high school and college.” Marcus went on to mention that he practices with his dad. We know that a healthy diet is a big part of being an athlete so we asked him, “What do you eat to stay in shape?” and he said, “I eat whatever, but I try to stay healthy.” He also mentioned that before a race he warms up and stretches.

Next, we asked Marcus what events he competed in, and he said that in track and field he did: the 100 meters, 200 meters, and relay. He also added that he plays point guard in basketball and quarterback in football.

She works at J’s and likes to see Chef Sammy cook at the restaurant and do cook-offs. She likes to learn new things from him. Marcella has been in the restaurant business for over 20 years. She really likes working at J’s because the people there are so nice. I had a great time at J’s when we went!

J’s is the most outstanding restaurant in Dinuba! On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, Room 20 went to J’s Sports Restaurant to interview their chefs. I interviewed Chef Teresa. She cooks the food. Chef Teresa helps Chef Sammy in the kitchen. She went to Quality School in Fresno to become a chef. I had a good experience at J’s and I am glad that I got to meet Chef Teresa!

Platinum Theatres in Dinuba has them all! The theatre is located at 250 South “M” Street. It has 6 theatres with stadium seating and air conditioner. They also show 3D movies. On Monday, June 17th our summer class visited the theatre and we interviewed Evelyn Herrera. Evelyn is the Box Office Cashier and has worked at this theatre for 5 years. She said, “I go to school in L. A. and when I come down for the summer I work here for two months.” The theatre is clean and has a nice and friendly staff. Ticket prices are $9.00 for adults, $8.00 for students and military, and $7.00 for senior citizens. There is a $2.00 extra charge for 3D movies. Matinee is $7.00 and Tuesday night specials are also $7.00. The movie Monsters University will start playing on Friday, June 21st. It will also be available in 3D. You can also call the theatre at (559) 591-7469 to get more information. So, if you want to go see a good movie and get away from the heat, we recommend Platinum Theatres. This theatre is clean, fresh, organized, and awesome!

Jackie Carter Raises Lambs to SheepBy Jonathan Linarez, Alejandro Gallegos, and Victor Martinez  Jackie Carter, a Dinuba High School student, is spending her time working at a farm. When asked who inspired her, Jackie said she is inspired by her teacher, Mr. Browne, her Ag Science teacher. Living in the country, she was already interested in farming. Last year, was her first year in FFA and she raised a lamb. “They’re a lot of work, but the show well,” she said, when speaking about lambs, her favorite animal. She started with a lamb last year and raised $450 plus an additional $50 with add-ons. Jackie spends a lot of her spare time doing other FFA projects. She does citrus judging, she is the Chapter Historian, and has started a scrapbook project. She also works with special animals such as rabbits, chickens, and other small animals. If you ever want to learn more about lambs or are interested in FFA, you might want to talk with Jackie Carter at Dinuba High School.

A Passion For AnimalsBy Braulio Torres, Amaya Jaramillo, and Jose Lopez  Do you have a passion for animals? Well, Elijah Alvarez does. We interviewed Elijah on June 18th at the Dinuba High School farm. When asked who inspired him to join FFA, he answered, “Mr. Browne my Ag Science teacher and Mr. Henderson my Ag Mechanics teacher both encouraged me.” This is Elijah’s second year in FFA. He joined FFA his Freshman year and raised a pig. This year, he is raising a Hereford meat steer that he plans to sell at the Tulare County Fair this fall. Elijah feeds his steer something called “Showtime.” “Showtime” is a mixture of alfalfa pellets, corn, and molasses. He also feeds his steer oats. He goes down to the school farm twice a day to feed the animal, once in the morning around 8:00 am and once in the evening around 8:00pm. When asked about FFA opportunities he said, “It grows that passion for animal.” He shared his passion with animals with us as we visited the farm. He spent a lot of time explaining the process of raising a steer and allowed the journalists from The Summer School Eagle to pet and feed his animal. When Elijah is not on the farm, he enjoys playing Call of Duty. After interviewing Elijah, some of us are now inspired to join FFA when we get to Dinuba High.

An Interview with Stephanie Hurtado,Dinuba Recreation CoordinatorBy Guadalupe Aguilera & Samantha Alvarado, Yesenia Vargas,and Cesar Villegas

If you are a kid who likes to have fun, then hurry over to the Dinuba Recreation Center as soon as possible, because Mrs. Hurtado has lots of programs and events planned for kids and even adults. Who is Stephanie Hurtado, and just what does she do at the rec center? On Tuesday, June 18th, students from Room 18 at Jefferson Elementary visited the recreation center. Mrs. Hurtado gave them a tour of the center, then they sat down with her to learn more about her job. They found out a lot of interesting things. Mrs. Hurtado works about eight hours a day. Every morning she unlocks the doors. She has her own office (with a jar of red licorice:) and that is where she checks her emails and her voicemails. She often has very important messages. She plans her day, and also plans ahead for the coming week and sometimes even the month. She has to be organized! “My job is fun, but it’s a lot of work,” Mrs. Hurtado told the reporters. “I like that my job is different every day. And I like that Dinuba is family oriented. It’s a great place to work!” She said her favorite part of the day is when she gets to visit the kids at the different sites. We learned they have many activities for kids like soccer, basketball, the Summer Fun Program with crafts and activities, baseball and softball. When the new Bob Barker Building is built it will even have a pitching machine.

When asked what advice she would give kids, Mrs. Hurtado said, “Be sure to pay attention in school. Set a good example for others.” So kids, don’t forget to have your parents sign you up at the Dinuba Recreation Center for fun activities. The number is 591.5940. Exercise! Improve your skills! Learn a new sport! Make friends! There’s sure to be a program or activity just for you. And while you’re there, be sure to say hello to Mrs. Hurtado. She works hard to make sure kids in Dinuba have fun activities to do all year round.

Important Fire Tips

 What can a fireman teach students? Safety tips! On Monday, June 17th, 2013, the reporters of Room 26 went to the firehouse for a tour and to learn fire safety tips. The students were able to see the fire trucks, ambulances, their classroom, offices, and where they sleep. They were able to learn important ways on how to escape a fire.

Safety tips given by firemen:1. If your home is on fire, you touch the door to feel for heat. If you feel heat, do not open the door.2 . If your clothes caught fire, you fall to the ground and roll back and forth.3. Heat stays up toward ceilings, so stay low and crawl.4. Make sure your home has a smoke detector and the batteries are changed often.5. Each family needs to have a meeting spot in case of a fire.

After learning about safety tips, we were able to take a tour of the firehouse. We first visited the office and saw where the calls come though. We continued our tour and saw the firemen’s learning room. Fireman Kevin Sirr showed us their four fire trucks and two ambulances and where they sleep, which is located on the 2nd floor of the firehouse. At the end of our tour, Firefighter Kevin demonstrated how they slide down the pole when an emergency occurs.

The firemen taught us many safety tips to share with our families. Captain Greg Chastain concluded our time at the fire station by teaching us the secret handshake. He said, “When you see us on the streets, give us the secret handshake, but do no not show anyone because then we will think they have come to visit us. An Interview at the FarmBy Jairo Ibarra, Eric Sandoval, and Berenice Mendoza Do you like money? Do you enjoy traveling? If so, then FFA might be a good place for you. We interviewed Selena Jimenez, a Dinuba High School FFA member, and found out that there are a lot of great opportunities in the program.

Selena was inspired to join FFA by her Ag teacher, Mr. Browne. This is Selena’s first year raising an animal. She has decided to raise a lamb. When asked if she can earn college credits she replied, “I don’t think I can earn college credits, but we do earn money.” Students earn money by selling their animal at the local county fair in the fall.

Selena is currently preparing for a veterinarian science completion. She will be traveling to Kentucky to compete with other FFA students. She is working hard and learning a lot while being part of FFA.

However he knows it’s bad for him, but he doesn’t drink that much. Next we wanted to know where he buys his equipment, and he said Big 5 because it’s close and has good stuff. We were curious where he went to elementary school at, and he stated that he went to Jefferson Elementary. Finally, we asked him, “Why did you choose this sport?” and he replied, “I chose this sport because it’s fun, and I am good at it.”

Our Community Services Manager: Mr. Carrillo

How many recreational programs does the city of Dinuba have?

On June 18, 2013, Room 18 went to the Recreation Center and interviewed Mr. Carrillo, Dinuba Community Services Manager. Mr. Carrillo believes that kids and parents can have lots of fun in Dinuba, especially in the programs offered by the recreation center. He has worked in Dinuba for thirteen years. Before that he worked in Reedley for fourteen years. He often works eight to ten hours every daily. Mr. Carrillo stated the center offers soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, swimming, handball, and after school programs, plus summer programs for students. He also said the city is building two new recreation centers that should be finished by the end of the year. These new centers will have an indoor soccer field, arcade games, batting cages, and many more activities. All the activities and programs are scheduled one year in advance, so Mr. Carrillo is very busy working to make sure Dinuba families have a fun and safe place to play..

Mr. Carrillo loves his job, and he loves going to work every day. When asked what his advice was for kids, he said, “Stay in school, be active, exercise every day, and study hard.” This sounds like great advice for everyone. We appreciate Mr. Carrillo for taking time to meet with us in his office, and for letting us sit around his conference table just like the adults get to do. It made us feel like very important journalists. Thank you, Mr. Carrillo, our Community Services Manager.

An Interview with Dr. Joe Hernandez

Do doctors help us learn? Well, some do! On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, the student reporters went by bus to McDonald’s to meet and interview Dr. Joe Hernandez. Dr. Hernandez has been a doctor of education for 14 years. He is the Dinuba Unified School District Superintendent. He decided to become a doctor 15 years ago when he was a principal. The person that inspired him the most was Dr. Ford the principal he had when he was a classroom teacher. The main reason he decided to get his doctorate was to do research and help our schools improve. A normal day for Dr. Hernandez can be easy or challenging with situations that are hard to deal with. His working hours can be very long starting at 7:30am and sometimes not ending until 10:00pm. One thing Dr. Hernandez dislikes about being a superintendent is when students or teachers are unhappy. He feels the hardest part of his job is hiring new teachers. Something very few people know about Dr. Hernandez is that he collects antiques, especially old glass milk bottles.Dr. Hernandez enjoys talking to kids, encouraging people, and making our schools a better place. When asked, “What do you love about being a superintendent?” He said, “I get to make a difference.” The advice he gave to us at the end of our interview is to always do your best.

Jason is not a chef yet, but he can cook too. His favorite thing to make is pasta. He person who inspired Jason was Emril Lagasse. Jason is always happy to cook. He has worked at different restaurants like Perko’s and IHOP. Jason likes to cook because it is fun and interesting. He likes to work at J’s Sports Restaurant. I had a great time at J’s!

Chef Sammy Kinelele was kind enough to let me interview him. Chef Sammy has been in the restaurant business for 34 years. He started in 1979 and his first experience was at Klein’s Truck Stop. He has done everything from washing dishes to being the big boss. He loves cooking because he feels at home in a kitchen. He can cook anywhere! It was a nice pleasure to meet with Chef Sammy. You will love the food at J’s because he loves to cook it!

Meet Miss Danelle, Sports Coordinator for the Dinuba Recreation CenterBy Larissa Diaz, Litzy Davila, Jonathon Gonzalez & Leslie Narvaez

Do you like to play or watch sporting events? We do, and that is why we enjoyed meeting and interviewing Miss Danelle, who is the Sports Coordinator at the Dinuba Recreation Center. She has been responsible for coordinating all city sports for the last six years. Miss Danelle’s workday often begins about 9:00 a.m. and involves talking to a lot of people, reviewing sporting event schedules, ordering trophies, and hiring people to officiate the games. She works with about twenty referees and umpires plus other staff. “My favorite part of my day is getting to work with kids,” she said, “and watch them grow through the program. I love watching and being with kids.” We discovered Miss Danelle began working part time at the center while she was still a high school student. She graduated from DHS and Fresno State University. And she had great advice for us. “I do recommend that you go to college and get a degree,” Miss Danelle advised the students. “If you can, get involved. Make sure you keep up your grades and have fun at school.” We would like to say it was great interviewing Miss Danelle.

My group and I were looking forward to the opportunity to interview a junior athlete named Xavier Jones.Our first question for Xavier was, “Who is your favorite athlete?” and he replied, “My favorite athlete is my dad. Aside from him, I like Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, R G 3, and Usain Bolt.” We know that a healthy diet is a big part of being an athlete so we asked, “What do you eat to stay in shape?” and he said, “I love to eat pizza. Meat Lover’s Pizza is the best, but I try not to eat it that often.” He also added that he drinks plenty of fluids like Gatorade, juice, water, and milk, but never on the day of a race.

Xavier went on to say that he also plays basketball and football. On his best day he scored 26 points in basketball and two touchdowns and one interception in football. In track he has won in league and valley, and in masters he got 3rd and qualified at state. Jefferson Summer School Visits Platinum Theatres What is your favorite type of movie? Action, cartoon, scary,

adventure, comedy, or mystery? By Mirian Gutierrez, Osvaldo Salinas, and Victor Benitez

Platinum Theatres in Dinuba shows different types of movies for all ages. The theatre opens at 10:45am and closes after the last movie shows at about 9:30pm. It has 6 theatres recently updated to digital for better picture and sound. Assistant Manager Maggie Robles does a little bit of everything at the theatre. She is in charge of scheduling the workers, doing inventory, and substituting anyone who is out ill. She also helps the manager, Pat Gabriel, with anything she needs. She said, “ I like my job, I like the people I work with.” The theatre is currently showing The Fast & the Furious 6 (PG-13), The Purge (R), This is the End (R), Man of Steel (PG-13), Monsters University (G), and World War Z (PG-13). Whatever type of movie you like and however old you are, you can count on Platinum Theatres to show movies for everyone to enjoy. So, go over to the theatre and see one today!

Got flowers? Come with us on our journey to The Flower Box downtown Dinuba.As we went on a guided tour of The Flower Box, we saw paintings, balloons, stuffed animals, purses, a flower-cutting knife, and walked into the flower freezer room. After our tour we listened to Carolyn Rodriguez explain the flower dying process.A question posed to Carolyn by Andres, our Summer School Eagle reporter, was “Which occasion sells the most flowers?” Valentines and Mother’s Day is our busiest times of the year.” Another interesting fact we learned from our interview was that the rose was the most popular flower at The Flower Box.As we concluded our visit, Carolyn gave each of us a vibrant fuchsia colored carnation as a souvenir. She likes to cook steaks. She is a preparation cook and she helps Chef with their food. If we were giving awards, I would give all the chefs at J’s an award! Their food was great!

She has learned most from following chefs like Chef Sammy. She decided to become a chef because she loves food. She has been a chef for the last 20 years. She likes cooking because she likes creating new ideas and new dishes. Her mom inspired her to be a chef. I had a really good time at J’s!

He has been a chef for 15 years. His mom inspired him to become a chef. He liked watching her cook for their family. He started cooking at Fiesta’s and went to culinary school in Fresno. Chef Eric likes cooking at J’s because everyone there is nice and he has fun. I think anyone would like to have dinner at J’s!

On Monday, June 17th our summer school group interviewedHugo Mejia. Hugo is a concessionist at Platinum Theatres. Hisjob is to make sure that all the food is stocked and to serve thecustomers. Some of the items sold at the concession stand are popcorn, hot dogs, nachos, ICEES, sodas, candies, and ice-cream. Hugo greets everyone with a smile. He is a student atSan Diego State University and would like to be a film director someday. His dream job for the future is to write screenplays for movies. The theatre shows 6 movies each day in 5 rounds. This makes atotal of 30 movies playing throughout the day. Hugo explainedthat to play a movie, a worker has to go up a ladder to put the movie in a huge machine upstairs. Hugo stated, “I like workingat a movie theatre because we get to watch the movies a daybefore they come out. That is really awesome!” He enjoys working here during the summer.

An Interview with Dr. Rogelio Fernandez

Dr. Fernandez is the best! Unlike most doctors he is interesting and funny. On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, the Summer School Eagles went by bus to McDonald’s to meet and interview Dr. Rogelio Fernandez.

Dr. Fernandez was inspired to become a doctor when he was 10 years old. In the hospital he saw the doctors help his younger brothers get better when they were very sick. After that experience, he took many science classes and found that he enjoyed them.

Becoming a doctor takes many years of education. First, Dr. Fernandez attended Reedley College and Fresno State for 6 years. After graduation he attended UC Irvine Medical School for 4 years. Last, he completed a 3-year residency program. Dr. Fernandez has been a doctor for 25 years.

“I always want to help and take care of people,” said Dr. Fernandez. He loves seeing people get better from their illnesses. One thing he dislikes about his job is the long hours and being on call. Being on call means to be available immediately if needed.

Dr. Fernandez is very busy and works long hours. He sees about 24 patients a day and on some days he also goes to the hospital to see more patients. When he is not working he enjoys traveling, camping, and seeing new places.

One piece of advice he gave us reporters was to stay in school and do the best we can.

I know a place you can take your family to dinner. On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, Room 20 went to J’s Sports Restaurant to interview their chefs. I interviewed Chef Teresa. Her mother inspired her to become a chef. Her favorite dish to cook is pasta, especially chicken fettuccini. She likes to cook for her family when they get together for celebrations or birthdays when everyone comes over. She started to cook when she was nine years old. She started her professional career when she was 15 years old. She went to Quality School in Fresno to get her degree in cooking. She enjoys cooking at J’s but her favorite place to cook is at home. The food she made us at J’s was delicious!

Even though he’s not a chef yet, he is still in training to be a chef. He decided to be a chef because he has worked in the restaurant business so long that he has learned from the best!

Fun Summer Activity

Do you want to do something fun indoors during the summer? Then, go watch a movie!

Our summer school class visited Platinum Theatres in Dinuba on Monday, June 17th. It felt refreshing to walk-in to an indoor place since the weather was about 88˚ outside. This theatre opened 10 years ago in June 2003.

At the theatre, we had the pleasure of interviewing Dominic Espino. Dominic is an usher and he is in charge of tearing the tickets at the entrance, helping customers, and cleaning the theatres. He said, “I like working here. It’s indoors!” He said that the busiest times at the theatre are the weekends and summers. A lot of new movies come out during this time of year. When asked how the movies they show were chosen, Dominic said, “Well, we pay money to a studio and they decide which movies to show.”

The theatre always shows a variety of movies at different times of the day. It is a big and clean place to enjoy a movie. The box office is at the front of the theater and it lists the prices, movies, and times the movies are showing. Therefore, if you want to stay away from the heat, visit Platinum Theatres this summer. After the movie, you can even get wet at the plaza and finish your day with a splash!

J’s is the most outstanding restaurant in Dinuba. On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, Room 20 went to J’s Sports Restaurant to interview their chefs. I interviewed the assistant to the chef, Jason. The person who inspired Jason was Chef Emrill Lagasse. Jason likes to cook everything. He is still in training. Although he did not go to culinary college, he is getting training at J’s by Chef Sammy. Jason decided to become a chef because he wanted to do something. I had a good time at J’s on Tuesday.

An Interview with Dr. Robert Fernandez

What kind of doctors do we need? On Tuesday, June 18, 2013, the Summer School Eagles went by bus to McDonald’s to meet and interview Dr. Robert Fernandez.

Dr. Fernandez went to Fresno State for 5 years then attended UC Irvine Medical School for 4 years followed by 3 years of residency. He has been a doctor since 1995 with 18 years of experience.

Being a doctor requires long hours, a typical day starts at 7:00 am with checking on mothers and babies in the hospital. Next, he sees patients at the clinic until lunchtime. After lunch, he sees patients until the end of the day.

Dr. Fernandez became a doctor to help people who don’t have a lot of money. The people who inspired him were his dad who pushed him to get good grades and finish school. The other was his older brother who he saw working in the clinic as a doctor. Therefore, he decided in his third year of college to become a doctor.

When Dr. Fernandez is not working he enjoys playing basketball and watching the Lakers on T.V. Family is important to him so he loves spending time with his two boys and wife. The advice he gave us, “Set your goals, pursue your goals, and do the best you can to meet your goals.”

We need doctors like Dr. Fernandez who is friendly, caring, and kind.

The Sentinel Linda is a famous editor in Dinuba! She was inspired to be an editor by watching reporters on television, and her college professor taught her about publishing. Linda enjoys writing stories about things that happen everyday. She interviews high school students for her articles. Linda says, “On my days off I like to read and spend time with my family.”

Do you know that Michael writes amazing stories for the Sentinel? Michael majored in journalism at Fresno State. While he was in college, a teacher inspired him to become a journalist. Michael has worked at the Sentinel for 3 years. Michael said, “I enjoy writing and taking pictures.” Michaels reads and works in the yard on his days off.

The art in the Dinuba Sentinel is fantastic! Duby does the art for the newspaper. Duby said that art inspires her to be creative. Duby has worked at the Sentinel for 6 years. On her days off, she enjoys barbequing with her family.

What does Henry do at the Sentinel? Henry does the printing at the newspaper. He does not print the newspaper though. The newspaper is sent by computer to Sanger to be printed. Henry served in the Army and has worked at the Sentinel for 25 years.

Miss T: A Day in the Life of a Recreation Leader

On June 18th journalists from The Summer School Eagle News interviewed Miss T. She is a Recreation Leader who works in the city’s After School and Summer School programs. Her favorite part of her job is preparing the staff for the day. Miss T has worked for the Recreation Center for three years, She usually works three or four hours a day, sometimes even volunteering extra hours in order to prepare activities for her students. On a typical day, Miss T prepares breakfast, crafts, and games for her students. She also coordinates fun shows for her kids. Miss T loves Dinuba and loves being in a free country. Her advice for kids is to “keep on doing what you’re doing!” These journalists will, because we think it is a good way to learn more about our great city of Dinuba and the people who live here. Thanks, Miss T, for all you do for kids!

Mega VideoBy: Room 12

Need something to cool off this summer? Take a trip to our local Mega Video for something refreshing and entertaining.

While touring Mega Video, we noticed a large quantity of DVDs from comedy, action, drama, mystery, and children titles for rent. In addition to the DVDs there was a vast variety of snow cone syrup flavors on shelves in the food section of Mega Video. They are well known for their Diablitos (snow cone with chili powder and freshly squeezed lime juice).Our 8-year old journalist, Priscilla, asked Mr. Valero, “How did you come up with the name Mega Video?” Well actually my youngest son came up with the name. He was about your age.” Briana interviewed Socorro Valero, a Mega Video employee. “Why do you like working at Mega Video?” Socorro responded, “I like meeting and talking with a lot of interesting people.”

In Conclusion, we found out how local business owners got started and continue to keep their businesses going. We learned a lot from both the Flower Box and Mega Video owners and employees. Room 12 found out that it takes a lot of hard work and have a friendly attitude toward customers.

SAFETY TIPS CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER FELIPE MARTINEZ

If you answered, “No!” then you better make some better choices in order to be safe, and stay alive. On Thursday June 19th, 2013 Summer School Eagle Reporters interviewed California Highway Patrol Officer Felipe Martinez in pursuit of summer safety tips. Officer Martinez offered his expertise in order to advise room 10 on how to have a safe and fun summer. 1.Always use your seatbelt correctly.2.Use a booster seat if you aren’t old enough, and or don’t meet the weight requirements by law.3.Never talk to strangers.4.Never play outside alone.5.Guns are not toys; Never play with them.6.Never play in the street.

Dinuba High School Student aspires to become a Veterinarian. Kierra Rambonga, a Dinuba High FFA member, spoke with us about raising animals. “I want to be a Veterinarian and I thought a great way would be to work with FFA.” Kierra is raising a lamb and it is her first time raising a farm animal. Just before our interview, Kierra had just received her new lamb. Mr. Browne, her Ag teacher, helps to get the animals from local Dinuba farmers.

Kierra hopes to sell her animal in the fall, at the fair. For sheep, the price per pound is about $3.00. She also explained that students make money by getting “add ons.” An “add on” is money given to FFA students for the animals from non-buyers that want to help them with their project.

Kierra enjoys working on the farm with animals. This will give her the experience she will need to help reach her goal in becoming a veterinarian in the future.

Interviews with Dinuba Firemen  Have you ever been on a field trip to the fire station? The Journalists of the Summer School Eagle Newspaper were able to visit the fire station on June 17th, 2013 to interview the firemen. They were able to learn about their duties and responsibilities they have. The Journalist asked them many questions about their jobs. They shared with us how they communicate with each other when they are on a call. Fireman Tim Miller said, “We communicate by cell phones, radios, and hand signals.” Fireman Kevin Sirr was asked, “What do you like about your job?” He replied, “He likes his job because he enjoys helping people and he works two full days and has four days off.” The Journalist asked Fireman Dustin Espino, “What do you like about being a Fireman?” “What I like about being a fireman is that I get to help people in my community in the event of an accident and I am able to meet new residents of Dinuba. I was raised in Dinuba and now I am able to give back to my community.” The Reporters of Room 26 enjoyed their experience of interviewing the firemen and learning more about their jobs. Before visiting the firemen, the students thought their jobs were easy, but learned it is a difficult and dangerous one. Interview inspires Future FFA Members

Karina Mata loves animals. She would have to because she spends a lot of time caring for them at the Dinuba High School Farm. She really enjoys working with sheep. “I will earn my Chapter Degree,” she said, when asked to share some of the reasons she is participating in the FFA program. She will have to spend a lot of time working with her sheep this summer, usually a few hours a day.

Besides the Chapter Degree, she hopes to make money from selling the animal in the fall. The price per pound will be about $3.00. “The lambs will be about 140 pounds,” Karina informed us.

The interview has inspired some of us at the Summer School Eagle to also join FFA when we get to Dinuba High School. We would like to thank Karina for her time.

From Eagles to Emperors!

 By Yuliana Rios Rodriguez, Yamilex Rodriguez, Izeth Prado, Esmeralda Villegas - Group #1 Meet the athletes! On June 17th, 2013 we, room 36 of the Summer School Eagle, were invited to interview the track and field team and tour the athletic department at Dinuba High School. At the Dinuba High School gymnasium, we met Coach Lichtenwaldt and Dinuba High School’s top track and field athletes. Our interview was held on Monday, June 17th, 2013 and began at 10:00 a.m. First we were put into groups with the athletes, three students to one athlete. My group and I were excited to have the opportunity to interview a junior athlete named Valerie Gallardo. Our first question for Valerie was, “Who do you practice with?” and she replied, “Other students and coach.” Next we asked “What do you do to stay in shape?” and she said that she runs, works out every day, and eats healthy. Valerie added that she also plays basketball and does cross-country. Next we wanted to know when did she first become an athlete and she said it was when she was in the fourth grade at Wilson Elementary. Continuing on, we asked her where does she practice, and she said, “I practice at the high school and at parks.” Finally, we asked her, “How many days do you practice?” and she said, “I practice everyday, well almost everyday.”

After our interview, Coach Lichtenwaldt gave us a tour of the weight training room. My group and I were excited to see so much equipment and how big the room was. Next we went to the track and field area. The track is one of only a few valley schools to have artificial turf.

So that we could get a feel for what the athletes do, Coach Lichtenwaldt lined us all up and had us race. Finally, we were given a brief tour of the aquatic center. The center has two swimming pools, one shallow and the other, deeper and larger.

By the time 11:00 a.m. had arrived, we had interviewed Dinuba High School’s top track and field athletes and got to see the weight room. In addition, we got to race on the track, and had the opportunity to visit the aquatic center. Now I can’t wait to become a Dinuba Emperor myself.
