Summer Report 2013

Introduction

This semester has begun with the election of the new executive committee of the

AAPG for the next fiscal year, which was a decision we made last year. It turned out to be

successful as the new and the old committee can work together and the newly elected

students can easier take over the leadership experiences.

It was hard to organize well the semester events for students and geosciences

professionals, but all the programs were very successful. We are glad that we were able

to cultivate the connection with the Aberdeen University Student Chapter and

participated on their spring short course, and we are also glad for the invitation to the

first European Student Chapter Leadership Days from the LaSalle Beauvais Student

Chapter.

In addition to the above mentioned, summer field trips and their organizations

are still in progress (European Student Chapter Leadership Days in LaSalle Beauvais,

Dolomites field trip in Italy & Moesian-Carpathian field trip in Romania, Budapest

Education Days).

It was a special pleasure in the middle of May that our Student Chapter won the

AAPG Outstanding International Award, which further strengthen our enthusiasm.

MOL Danube Refinery Tour

5th February

On the 5th February our Student Chapter

visited the MOL’s Danube Refinery in

Százhalombatta. The refinery can be found in

Pest County, 27 km far from Budapest.

At the beginning of our tour we watched a

short movie about the refinery. The group then

attended a brief lecture about the details of the

working units, processing technologies and the

products of the facility. The Danube Refinery is the only Hungarian MOL refinery which

refines crude oil. It’s capacity is 8,1 Mt/year, what makes it one of the largest refineries in

the Middle European Region. Ninety percent of the processed crude oil is imported from

Russia and is a Russian Export Blend (REB).

After the lecture we had the chance to visit several working units on a bus trip and to

take a look at the directory room, which seemed like the deck of a space ship from a sci-fi

movie. At the end of the trip we visited the Friendship II crude oil pipeline whereby REB

comes from.

It was a great opportunity to learn about the downstream sector and to meet with a

specialist who answered all our questions. The guidance of Norbert Ruff (co-worker of MOL

Plc.) is highly acknowledged.

Meeting of the Mineral Resource Classification, Evaluation and

Management

21st February

The Hungarian Geological Society (MFT), the Hungarian Geological and Geophysical

Institute (MFGI) and the Hungarian Mining Authority (MBFH) organized the Meeting of the

Mineral Resource Classification, Evaluation and Managment to discuss the actual questions,

methods and problems of this topic for Hungary in the ceremonial hall of the MFGI. Several

leaders and professionals of the concerned professional Associatons and Companies from

the hydrocarbon and solid mineral mining have given presentations as well.

The organizers have provided time for the future generation geoscientists, the Eötvös and

Miskolc Student Chapters of the AAPG and for the Eötvös Student Chapter of the Society of

Economic Geologists to introduce ourselves and our activity. Balázs Czeglédi (Miskolc) and

János Csizmeg (Eötvös) presidents have presented about the AAPG Chapters with big

enthusiasm.

We are very grateful for the opportunity to be able to join this noted professional

Meeting and develop our contacts with the geoscience Societies, Institues, Companies!

L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grant

12th March

We are very grateful for the Grant! This is the first year when one of our member and

the Eötvös Studen Chapter won this. Our awarded undergraduate Erath scientist student is

Dániel Budai, and he would like to use the Grant for a basin research. The other part of the

Grant earned to the Eötvös SC will be used to complete the budget of the Dolomites field trip

from 29th July to 3rd August.

János Csizmeg

„I would like to thank the AAPG Foundation for the L. Austin

Weeks Grant. It means a huge support for me and also means an

appropriate feedback to our Student Chapter to continue our work.

In this year I am planning to start a study about the Neogene

hydrocarbon system of a selected area in the Pannonian Basin with

Petromod 2012 basin modeling software. To complete this I will use the

Grant to order vitrinite reflectance analysis on the core samples of an selected well. Hopefully,

my research will be successful and it will help me to start my career.”

EAGE Student Lecture Tours 25th March

Dr. Bjorn Wygrala and Dr. István Vető visited the Eötvös

Loránd University in Budapest to give a short course about

Basin and Petroleum System Modeling and about the Shale

Gas Perspectives.

First Dr. Wygrala presented the conventional and the

unconventional resources. After that he shortly described the

risk factors related to the ’essential elements’ of the

petroleum system. During the session we have learned about

the importance of the petroleum system analysis. A basin

model gives a complete and unique record of generations,

migration, accumulations and loss of hydrocarbon

in a petroleum system through geologic time.

He introduced the modeling process, the

data types, workflows and goals of typical

applications through a case study from Alaska

North Slope exploration in a live 3D Petromod

software presentation to illustrate these points. It

was a great opportunity for us to learn more about the petroleum system modeling because

today it is generally applied from the early exploration to field development.

On the afternoon lecture Dr. István Vető gave

us general information about the deposition of the

shale gas source rocks in case of different models.

He also defined the main criterion of shale gas

occurrences and talked about the basic techniques

for shale gas production. The main focus was on the

thermic shale gas development. He highlighted the

main parameters of the reservoir (such as porosity, TOC and the exact location of the gas

inside the shale). At the end of the lecture he showed different production methods and

some potential Hungarian occurrences (Kössen Marl & Tard Clay Fm.).

Thank you for the lecturers the event, these were very useful, because the importance of

unconventional hydrocarbon occurrences such as shale gas is increasing nowadays!

AAPG Imperial Barrel Award 2013 – European Region, Prague

21st – 23rdMarch

Due to the successes of the last years and the great interest of European Universities

AAPG’s European qualifying of IBA competition was organized in Prague in this spring again.

It was the 6th time that the Eötvös University Team participated at the IBA. This year’s team

was built up by 3 MSc geologists (Daniella Micsinai, Enikő Várkonyi and Ágnes Török) and 2

MSc geophysicists (Bence Solymosi and Attila Komor) who were led by professor György

Pogácsás, Faculty Advisor and János Csizmeg, Consultant.

Our study area was situated in Nova Scotia offshore this year. The start of preparation

was not so easy but all of our efforts were not useless because during this time we could

improve our skills in HC exploration and finally we learned to work in a team.

This competition was an excellent opportunity to peep into the work of HC companies

and to acquire a lot of experience in HC exploration and last but not least we have built

international relationship with the other teams of European universities.

Enriched with new experiences we hope that the Eötvös Team can get place in the next

year.

Petroleum Geology in the Heart of Industry - short course organized

by the Aberdeen University AAPG SC

6th – 14th April

This year two members of Eötvös AAPG SC (Ágnes Király, Attila Balázs) and Lisbon

University AAPG SC had the chance to participate in the short course “Petroleum Geology in

the Heart of Industry” organized by the Aberdeen University AAPG SC. It was the second

time that the Eötvös SC got an invitation and we all hope that this successful cooperation

between the chapters will continue in the future.

The week contained several exciting programs from field trips, through a conference

to interesting exercises held by experts from the E&P industry.

Participants of the short course in the real heart of the European E&P industry

During the week we visited the Halliburton and the BP headquarters in Aberdeen

where we could learn about their activity in the North Sea area and about the changing

world of exploration.

We participated in a few field trips where we studied about the geological and

geodynamical evolution of Scotland. We visited Devonian Old Red Sandstone outcrops and

investigated some recent sedimentological features too.

Summer Report 2013

One of the most unique parts of the short course was a conference at the King’s

College of Aberdeen University about the economical, legal and geological aspects of

hydrocarbon exploration in the 21st century.

After all one can say that this week was unforgettable for every participant because

we experienced some really up-to-date aspects of geophysics and geology, we had the

chance to examine how the companies work in the heart of the oil industry and last but not

least we got to know some new friends from Lisbon and Aberdeen AAPG Student Chapters.

Visit theMOL wellsite, the gas processing plant & the Museum of the

Hungarian Petroleum Industry in Zala

19th April

The Eötvös SC organized together with the

Department of Physical and Applied Geology a one

day field trip to Zala, West Hungary focusing on the

E&P facilities. More than 20 students got the chance

to visit the exploratory drilling Tófej-1. Before the

trip on the 12th of April András Németh from the

MOL Plc. gave us a detailed presentation about the

hydrocarbon geology of the Zala Basin and the Tófej

prospect drilling in progress. On the field in

compliance with severe safety standards we saw

the drilling equipment, such as drill pipes and

rotary heads and we have learned about their use.

After that, we also visited the mud logger cabin

where we could see the the analysis process of the

cuttings taken directly from the well. We were in luck because when we went up to the

rotary table we were able to observe the method of inserting a new drill pipe. We had expert

guides during the whole visit so beside

the practical things we learned a lot about

the drilling process as well.

The next stop was a gas processing

plant in Ortaháza where we saw a lot of

interesting equipment and learned that

the natural gas extracted from a well

should go through many steps of process

until it can be utilized in households. We

also saw what they do with the unusable

part of the gas. Gas processing plant, Ortaháza

At the end of the day we went to the Museum of the Hungarian Petroleum Industry in

Zalaegerszeg, which is already an annual stop for the Eötvös students. There were old

geophysical instruments and a few modern vehicles of a Hungarian geophysical company.

We saw some old oil rigs which were very different from the one we saw in Tófej. There was

also a very interesting exhibition about the history of the petroleum industry in Hungary.

4th International Geosciences Student Conference in Berlin

25th - 28th April

At the end of April two members of the AAPG Eötvös Sudent Chapter travelled to

Berlin to the 4thIGSC. Thanks to our multiannual relationship with the Bucharest Student

Chapter, we were able to organize to make the travel together. This conference is sponsored

by the SEG, AAPG and EAGE, and some great companies also supported this event. The

conference offered a good possibility to practice holding presentations in English and to

build new relationships.

In the conference both of us held an oral presentation, with great success. We had got

the chance to talk with some experts from the Total, Exxon, Prospectiuni, AAPG, EAGE, SEG,

etc. These conversations were mostly about our professional future, and it was gratifying,

that the World is full with possibilities.

Senior Professional Meeting

8th May

After the successful Young Professional Meeting of the previous semester we decided

to organize a similar meeting with senior experts, so we invited seven representatives from

hydrocarbon exploration and service companies active in Hungary. They gave short

presentations and shared their experiences

with the students about the hydrocarbon

exploration: Balázs Gellért (MOL Hungarian

Oil and Gas Plc.), Gábor Bada (TXM Falcon),

Frank Thompson (Schlumberger), Mikhail

Shevelev (NIS), Levente Szabó (Hungarian

Horizont Energy), David LeClair (Sand Hill

Petroleum BV) and Géza Wórum (Geomega).

They also introduced the structure of

the company and the jobs they are working

at, and gave us some useful advices as well,

like the importance about an explorationist’s

carrier, that we have to be geoscientists, not

just geologists or geophysicists.

During the breaks and after the

presentations a small buffet was prepared

and we had the chance to ask questions and

converse directly with the invited experts.

The meeting was very interesting and

useful to get to know better the work and life

in the hydrocarbon industry. We thank all the

lecturers for this great event!

Discussion on the Neogene Pannonian Basin

30th May

The Upper Miocene infill of the back-arc Pannonian Basin has been studied for

decades and is still under great interest. The stratigraphy, particularly the sequence

stratigraphy of the basin, the geodynamics related to the Messinian event are all hot topics

currently under research. We have invited several renowned scientists both from the

industry and academics to present and discuss their results about this theme on the Eötvös

University for a wider publicity of the geosciences.

This event was a great occasion for

András Németh (MOL) to hand over the

AAPG Outstanding International Student

Chapter Award to the Eötvös SC, which

raised further the light of the event.

Five lectures were held: the newest

theories in sequence stratigraphy was

described by István Csató (MOL), the

revision of the chronostratigraphy of the

basin was discussed by Imre Magyar (MOL, MTA, ELTE). Györgyi Juhász (MOL) and György

Pogácsás (ELTE, MOL) presented the newly found Alpár

Canyon in the Upper Miocene, Orsolya Sztanó (ELTE, TXM) &

co-authors showed the cycles of shelf and slope growth and

the deep-water sand accumulation in the Makó Trough and

Frank Horváth (ELTE) & co-workers talked about the

Messinian event and related geodynamics. The chairman of

the event was László Fodor (ELTE, MTA). The short lectures

were followed by a lengthy discussion to allow differing views

to be expressed. The views got closer by the end of the

discussion. The students benefited from the experience as

the topic is not extensively discussed in regular coursework

studies.

Demjén Field Trip (North Hungary)

7th June

This field trip was organized by the AAPG Miskolc Student Chapter to Demjén with

the aim of getting insight into the local hydrocarbon system and to get a better

understanding of the exploration & production procedures. Two outstanding lectures were

addressed to the audience in the local establishment of MOL Plc. in the vicinity of Eger. The

first lecture was given by János Blahó, geologist, who made us familiar with the geology of

the territory, the different attributes of reservoir rock and various fault systems. The second

lecture which was given by István Varga, oil engineer, was about the history of hydrocarbon

exploitation of Demjén, the reserves and the various engineering solutions used in

production.

Having listened to these presentations, we were guided in the oil field of Demjén (in

the MOL establishment) visiting the equipment park and one of the still active wells which

provides 2-3m3 petroleum per day.

Then we could get acquainted with the reservoir rock of hydrocarbon (Kiscell Clay) in

the famous Kis-Eged outcrop where the Late Eocene – Early Oligocene succession can be

studied. Finally, we were directed to the last quarry found in Noszvaj that reveals the matrix

supported latest Early Oligocene Noszvaj Member of Kiscell Clay which was interpreted as a

submarine debris fan. In the quarry we could see some nice faults, fractured and oriented

In summary, we spent a very

substantial day together with the

Miskolc SC that was very useful for

every participant. All of us better

understood and got a glance how a

complex hydrocarbon system looks like

and what challenges we have to face in

the hydrocarbon production. Last but

not least, we seized the opportunity to

thank our guides (János Blahó & István

Varga) for the amazing lectures and

interesting guidance during the day.
