Stoneleigh-Burnham Summer Programs take place on the 100-acre Stoneleigh-Burnham School campus in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts; we are three hours from New York City, two hours from Boston, and within an hour of some of the United States’ most prestigious colleges and universities, including Mount Holyoke College, Williams College, Smith College, Amherst College, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

In addition to the specific program venues, the school grounds offer an outdoor tennis complex, a fitness center, an outdoor pool, a computer lab, and a full gymnasium available throughout the session for supervised activities.

Stoneleigh-Burnham Summer Programs are residential. Girls stay on residence hallways located in the main building, and residential counselors live on the hallways with the girls. Each room is designed for double occupancy and some can be arranged to accommodate triples. Program directors will do their best to ensure each girl has a roommate close to her age.

While summer programs are in session, participants eat meals in the Dining Hall, located on the first floor of the main building. The experienced dining staff prepares well balanced meals each day. In addition to the main meal, there are many options including salads, a deli bar, a pasta bar and more.

Stoneleigh-Burnham Summer Programs have 24-hour medical coverage on site, with at least one staff member certified in First Aid and CPR at all activities. Medical coverage is supervised by Stoneleigh-Burnham Health Services using the Connecticut River Internists as medical consultants. During day-time activities there is a Certified Athletic Trainer on staff. For evening activities and overnight a medical assistant is on site. The campus also has two Automated External Defibrillators.

Stoneleigh-Burnham School reserves the right to cancel a program based on underenrollment. Please contact the Summer Programs office before making travel plans.

Bonnie Castle Riding Camp (BCRC) is named after Stoneleigh-Burnham School’s most famous and beloved horse, Bonnie Castle, Grand Hunter Champion in 1978 at the Grand National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. BCRC is one of the premier riding camps in the country.

Bonnie Castle campers have two daily mounted lessons and have semi-private lessons each week with one of the camp’s experienced and dedicated instructors. The goal of the program is to help girls develop and improve their riding skills through instruction, practice and competition appropriate for the beginning rider as well as for the more experienced young horsewoman.

Bonnie Castle Riding Camp features instruction at all levels in Hunters, Jumpers, Equitation, Dressage, Combined Training and Equine Studies. Girls should be capable of trotting independently in a group lesson and grooming and tacking up on their own. At the beginning of every session, each camper’s ability is evaluated to determine her instructional needs and to help place her in an appropriate group.

In addition to the daily mounted lessons, two additional electives are offered: Equine Studies and Activity (arts, drama, games or sports). Academic tutoring is also available in English and mathematics.

At the end of each session, all campers participate in shows. Each girl’s daily schedule is supervised by the residential staff. Girls are busy but can also find some spare time to read, take a swim or call home. Campers are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors by taking advantage of the Stoneleigh-Burnham campus. A creative and cooperative atmosphere is stressed in every aspect of camp life.

Intensive Riding CampJune 21 – June 26, 2009Ages 14 – 18 $1,000.00

The Stoneleigh-Burnham Intensive Riding Camp is designed for riders interested in learning how to be versatile and adaptable riders. Rather than working with one horse over the course of several days, IRC campers work with the school’s 40 horses. The Stoneleigh-Burnham Equestrian Center hosts an impressive group of horses from beginning walk-trot-canter horses to horses that are competitive in the Jumpers and Junior Equitation Medals. The IRC offers the unique opportunity to ride several horses in daily lessons. Instruction and lessons are focused on Hunt Seat Equitation, and riders can expect to receive instruction in dressage, jumpers and hunters as well.

Created with the methodology of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) and the Intercollegiate Horse Show

Association in mind, the Intensive Riding Camp at Stoneleigh-Burnham School introduce girls to the concept of riding effectively within the constructs of these organizations. Stoneleigh-Burnham boasts four Interscholastic Equestrian Association National Championships as well as the many alumnae that have gone on to compete in renowned equestrian programs at the collegiate level.

IRC participants have a busy schedule including lessons, classroom education, hands-on learning in the stables and some off-campus free time. The program includes units on nutrition, fitness, horse care, stable management, equipment and basic illnesses and ailments. Participants take part in video clinics, in which videotaped lessons are later analyzed and discussed in a classroom. Girls have the opportunity to ride and learn with the the IRC director, Stoneleigh-Burnham’s riding program director and other guest instructors.

Lessons are run in a group format and offer the opportunity for campers to change mounts several times. There is a dress code for riding lessons consisting of field boots, breeches and a polo or plain colored fitted t-shirt.

IRC is a small group of 6-8 girls who are selected through an application process based on ability. Applicants should be capable of jumping at least 2’3” on unfamiliar horses, able and comfortable riding without stirrups and used to coursework in both indoor and outdoor rings.

Applicants are asked to send in a brief questionnaire, a recommendation from their current trainer / coach and a photo or video. For an application or for further information, please contact Sam Pleasant at [email protected] or 413-773-8333.

Program director Samantha L. Pleasant ’02 is a riding instructor at Stoneleigh-Burnham School and co-coach of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association team. Samantha has spent the past two summers directing Bonnie Castle Riding Camp and before that was a Bonnie Castle counselor for five summers. She has taught at the Stoneleigh-Burnham Equestrian Center since the fall of 2006 and is licensed through the State of Massachusetts to teach horseback riding.

Through its continued commitment to the education of young women, Stoneleigh-Burnham Summer Programs presents A Voice of Her Own: A Public Speaking and Debate Experience, a residential program designed to honor girls’ voices, intellects, and passion for learning. Stoneleigh-Burnham School has a long and illustrious history in debate and public speaking and is recognized as one of the strongest programs in New England, competing locally, nationally, and internationally.

Staffed by Stoneleigh-Burnham’s debate faculty and accomplished lecturers and debaters, A Voice of Her Own is structured for a wide range of girls, from those who want to gain confidence in speaking publicly to those who wish to improve and implement oratorical, research and critical thinking skills. Many women in public life ascribe their success in part to their early training in debate and public speaking. While some girls will use the skills honed in this session for secondary school competitions, all will acquire lifetime skills in public speaking and debate.

Two OwlBridge programs are offered:

This program is a three-week academic review/preview program for girls entering grades 8-10 who wish to strengthen their academic performance in a boarding school setting. Students enrolled in OwlBridge Academic focus on Mathematics and English, with instruction tailored to the specific needs of each student.

The Mathematics component solidifies student understanding of both pre-algebra and first-year algebra. The English component pays equal attention to language and literature skill development. Specific instruction in academic and organizational strategies is emphasized throughout, as is the appropriate use of relevant technology in cultivating efficient study habits.

This program is based on our year-long program and is offered for students ages 12-18. In small classes, taught by trained ESL faculty, girls can dramatically increase their proficiency in English through this three-week immersion experience. Within the ESL program, classes enhance skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Arts and crafts, technology training, and other recreational activities are offered as part of the daily schedule. In addition to strengthening a student’s English skills, the

Acculturation Program introduces each student to American culture through community service projects, field trips and activities with students from the United States. The OwlBridge ESL faculty make certain that students are placed in classes appropriate to their skill level.

In addition to academic preparation in language and culture, there are daily programs in the fine arts and sports, as well as recreational activities on and off campus in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, including longer excursions on Saturdays. Structured study hall in the evenings provides ample time to prepare for class and seek academic support from adult residents, peer counselors, and classmates.

The OwlBridge Program gives girls the opportunity to develop to their full potential as students and individuals. Under the guidance of Stoneleigh-Burnham faculty members, the program encourages students to develop their academic potential while also experiencing the joys of summer.

Applications are welcome throughout the year and can be accepted late into the spring if spaces still remain in the program. Teacher evaluations and recommendations are required for registration and will be mailed out upon receipt of registration. Please plan accordingly when registering.

Founded in 1997, The Sorvino Dance Intensive is designed to give dancers training with professional instructors in an intimate setting with a maximum of twenty-four students. Dancers come to Stoneleigh-Burnham to refine technique and prepare performance pieces. All dancers get a broad understanding of various styles while experiencing Western New England’s rich dance offerings

and artists. The Intensive is open to dancers ages 11-17 with intermediate to advanced skill levels.

The Intensive features a full day of dance with breaks for meals and an afternoon swim. Dancers take two technique classes in ballet, jazz, and modern dance, two repertoire sessions, and Pilates daily. In the evenings, dancers enjoy activities either as a group or with other Stoneleigh-Burnham Summer Programs. On Friday afternoon, dancers attend the International Dance Festival at Jacob’s Pillow in Lee, MA for workshop classes, a presentation on the Inside/Out stage, and a performance on the main stage. Dancers also participate in a culminating performance at the end of the session that parents are encouraged to attend.

While in New York, she trained with several highly respected instructors, including Oliver Steel (modern), Lisa Lockwood and Jason Melm (ballet), Patti Wilcox (jazz), Katiti King (Simonson technique), Geraldine Cardiel (Limontechnique), Teri Steel (Pilates), and Alexandra Beller (composition).

Ann brings to the Intensive the inspiration from performances attended while on sabbatical, including the Mark Morris Dance Group, Pilobolus, Alexandra Beller/Dances, Elise Monte, Christopher Wheeldon’s Morphoses, American Ballet Theater, John Jasperse and Trisha Brown. Ann and her son Vic have collaborated with composer Greg Snedeker on making a dance film entitled, “Flowing Through,” and Ann is currently writing a book for teens on the life of Martha Graham.

In addition to Ann, the Intensive is staffed by outstanding professionals and guest artists including: Curt Jacobs, professional jazz dancer and instructor from Los Angeles; Johnna Birri, Smith College graduate, teaching tap, modern and repertory; Aimee Stone from the MacDuffie School, teaching modern and composition; and Marilyn Middleton teaching West African.
