About IIM Sirmaur

Himachal Pradesh, which in every sense reflects its literal meaning – “In the laps ofthe Himalayas“, is the home to one of the newest Indian Institute of Management –IIM Sirmaur. It was established in 2015 and situated in a city famous for itsabundant natural beauty and religious association. The river Yamuna passes throughthe town. The temporary campus of IIM Sirmaur is at Himachal Institute ofTechnology, Rampur Ghat Road, Paonta Sahib, District Sirmaur.

The project I chose to work on at Yes securities is processautomation. The objective is to automate the company’s backoffice operations and through this reduce the turnaround time. Ihave studied in detail the operational procedures and then afterdiscussion with the employees came up with some possiblesolutions. Then I did extensive research about the viability ofthese solutions, talked to software vendors who supply thecompany and was able to finalise what had to be done. Thosetwo months taught me in what ways the real world is differentfrom what we study in the books.

I interned at Birla Cellulosic (BC), one of the VSF plants ofGrasim Industries Ltd. under the Aditya Birla Group. I wasassigned a project to find avenues to cut back on theoutsourced material handling cost of the pulp warehouses. Ittook some time for me to wrap my brain around theoperational ins and outs of the warehouse. My mentor playedan instrumental role in guiding me. In the end, I was givenan opportunity to present my findings to the SCMdepartment.

As it did tome, it complements the theoretical knowledge with practicalityby providing exposure to the real time business environment.

I have been asked to work on two projects; the first being toincrease SRN (Saleable Room Nights) and another being todecrease %UN (Unhappy). It was a great learning experience towork with teams who were on the ground level along with hotelmanagement and staff and knowing about various practicalchallenges faced by them. It was my first experience to workwith such a large team and this internship has helped me togain insights on the hotel industry.

My project at Penguin Random House India Pvt. Ltd. was TitleMarketing - planning and execution of HBR and HUP books. Thepublishing giant gave me ample opportunities to learn, withrefining the knowledge gained in the classroom and add a newperspective to it, being the most important one. During theinternship, I’ve surely learned how to implement my classroomlearnings, but more importantly I've learnt the importance ofteam work and satisfaction gained by employees when theirefforts are valued. The project given to me at Sitaram Denims was to assess thefair value of the company which would then be utilized in theplanned initial public offering in the near future of thecompany. The methods that I used to come up with the fairvalue were free cash flow and guideline transactions method.I found both these methods quite challenging given the lack ofcomparable companies and the difficulty in coming up withestimates. However, I worked on these issues and came upwith a fair value of the company. Initially seemingly innocent,this project was very challenging and proved to be a greatlearning experience for me

My project was aimed at the expansion of Yes Securities as adynamic investment advisory business in India. I did extensiveresearch on various investment avenues available in India aswell as abroad. The objective of my study is to develop a robo-advisory platform which will take care of our investment needshumanly. The most important thing about my project is that ithas made me more humble and patient. It helped meunderstand the importance of backing myself and look for thesolution to the real life problem with a cool head.

I joined the sales team and started working in the doctorchannel under B2B segment. My project included gainingactionable insights regarding various clinics which treats chronicdiseases in Delhi and establishing a tie up with that particularclinic thus expanding the B2B clients. People at LifCarePharmacy were quite helpful and enthusiastic which kept theworking spirit alive and running. Overall it was a very niceindustrial exposure and great practical learning experience.

The project assigned to mewas logistics cost to serve where I had to benchmark the totallogistics cost across depots and to suggest the majoropportunities of improving efficiency and profitability.The GSK summer internship program has been a greatlearning experience. My project was in the field of Finance, titled Exchange RiskManagement. This project mainly focused on recognizing factorsthat can potentially cause exchange rate fluctuations and theproducts approved by the Central Bank for PSUs to hedgeagainst risks related to foreign currency debts due to saidfluctuations. In NTPC, Learning takes place irrespective of thedesignation of the person. The experience was really enrichingand will serve as a strong base for my future experience in thefield of finance.

After working in the IT sector for 2 years, I was fortunate tosecure an opportunity to be a part of a manufacturing facilityat SCW of the DCM-Shriram group. My projects were aboutdata analysis to identify and minimize slowdowns/failures andincrease efficiency as well as optimization of inputingredients. Various OR concepts helped me meet theexpectations of my project. The understanding of the workculture and the criticality of efficiency in operations at SCWhave added to my knowledge. Working under the mentorship of the CEO of the company Lt.Gen. Dr. SP Kochhar was a great experience for us. Theprojects that we did were under the banner of TSSC &University of Chicago. We were given the task to market theproduct, do strategic analysis and sell it to at least 40 people.Going in this direction had intrigued great interest for me inthe field of marketing and sales. And I wish to continue downthis road to reach success that I had always dreamt of.

Objectiveis to achieve this in the most efficient way, through whichemployees can express their view/mood in the simplest term.Learnings that will help me in future is in HR practices onecannot force something upon the employees, it has to comefrom within the employees. As a HR, I can only encourage themand maintain a healthy atmosphere. Overall it is a goodbeginning to a steep learning curve.

The objective of my internship was to understand the targetmarket in which our product is to be placed in order to enhanceour company's sales. I did Segmentation, targeting andpositioning of the product through social media advertisements.Apart from this I also had to learn the company culture and itswork environment in order to recruit the suitable candidate asper the company's requirement. I also prepared IncomeStatement for the company at the end of every month. Duringmy internship period I used various tools like Microsoft Excel,Facebook Advert, Offbiz Framework, Google Analytics, etc. Thisinternship made me a true manager.

I did my internship at Azim Premji Foundation on ProcessOptimization. The objective of my internship was tounderstand various processes, like admissions, etc. at theAzim Premji University and optimize them to decreasesresources spent as well as increase the quality of studentsadmitted. During the course of internship I used various toolslike MS-Excel, Mailerlite, etc and used theories likequestionnaire designing, correlation, etc. Apart from the usualwork, the internship bolstered my confidence and introducedme to the working culture in offices.

My project during my internship was “Development of HRIS atJindal Poly Films Ltd.” The company is trying to compriserecruitment activities like pre-boarding & onboarding and exit ofemployees in the existing HRIS application. I observe existingHRIS system and suggest modifications or corrections. Mysecondary tasks were to gather a pool of candidate for jobopenings at the company and to co-ordinate with them forfurther process. It was a very enriching experience as I wasenabled to manage the initial recruitment process.

My internship is in steel sector. I have been assigned with theproject of Positioning of Panther TMT rebars in B2B and B2Cmarket segment. Through primary research, I found theparameters on which positioning can be done. Strategies forthe positioning of Panther TMT were created by me andrecognized by my mentor. I learned about the corporateculture which will help me lifelong when I do job or do my ownbusiness. The learnings are way more than a person couldacademically learn in a span of two months,

My project at Sitaram Denims was to determine the fair/marketvalue of the company. This project was allotted to me for theupcoming initial public offering by the company. The twoapproaches I used to complete this task were income andmarket. Both these approaches required selecting methods andworking on them to get a fair value. It was a daunting task but Iwas able to complete the project and arrive at a fair value. Itwas a valuable experience for me and helped me grasp thesubtleties of finance better.

The opportunity to work with thefinest in their fields on the invoicing SOP of Fenesta BuildingSystems was priceless. I did digital marketing for iRenovate, an interior design startup.The objective was to generate more traffic for the website (bothorganic and inorganic) as well as to get more leads for thecompany. I was lucky to get a hands-on experience of settingup and managing the AdWords campaign and of working onFacebook Lead Ads. I also did email marketing and designedcampaigns on Mailchimp. In order to get ranked on Google, Iresearched for and wrote blog topics and optimized them forSEO on bi-weekly basis. Before this internship, I was completelyoblivious to the fascinating world of Digital Marketing and theinternship period provided me a gateway to this world.

My project for summer internship is to conduct a marketresearch for Mahindra’s Tourister. Methodology followed is toconduct market survey of existing customers to know what allcould be improved and to survey prompt customers to knowtheir needs. Based on the survey results, recommendedsolutions and improvements are submitted for improving salesof the vehicle.

Under his guidance, I analyzed some growthcompanies fundamentally and also applied various F&Ostrategies to Nifty such as Bull Call Spread, Long Straddle etc.,which was the main topic of my project. I also got anopportunity to handle some large investors’ portfolio and toapply my finance learning to real market scenario. My summer internship project was in the field of Marketingand Strategy. It was on launching a new module by theUniversity of Chicago to be offered in India. A joint venturewith Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC) under National SkillDevelopment Council (NSDC). I focused on designing,branding and marketing that module. TSSC offered mecomplete discretion, flat organizational structure and expertguidance by the CEO. This experience will help me greatly inmy future endeavors in the concerned field.

Mywork here was spread across different fields, from interviewingthe candidates to preparing financial statements for thecompany to marketing its products online.The primary area of focus was Digital Marketing and theobjective was to make best use of social media advertising toincrease the sales of the company. I also worked on dataanalytics, working on data gathered from Facebook adverts andgoogle analytics. I learned the usages of Rapidminer tool andbasics of R programming. And most importantly, my stint withSimbacart has taught me about the importance of working as ateam and to be dedicated towards my work.

My project is about the mapping of healthcare facilities and theobjective is to map all the private healthcare facilities in 6blocks of Raigad district based on parameters such as Location,Services, and Scale. For this particular project, I used theknowledge of 'Market Research' course which enabled me todesign appropriate survey tools catering to different healthcarefacilities and to get the desired information. Additionally Iworked with MS-Excel for data visualization and analysis.This project gave me an immense understanding of marketresearch domain from developing survey tools, collecting data,analyzing data to finally represent findings in a fathomable way.Working with data gave me hands-on experience and a headstart towards a career in Market Research.
