Travel Clinic Service Off to University?

Secondary Care Referrals

Our experienced travel nurse provides a comprehensive range of up-to-date travel healthcare advice and vaccinations to both

If you’re off to university for the first time, you need to think about where to register for your GP services and ensure you’ve had the Men ACWY vaccine.

If a GP advises that you are being referred to a Specialist, could you please tell the GP which hospital

What is the Men ACWY vaccine?

The Men ACWY vaccine protects you against the meningococcal bacteria which can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Both diseases are very serious and can kill, especially if not diagnosed early.

New university students are at particularly high risk in the first few weeks of term when they mix closely with lots of new people, some of whom may unknowingly be carrying the bacteria. It is therefore recommended that all new students up to 25 years old should have the Men ACWY vaccine before they start university. If you haven’t had this vaccination yet, please contact us as soon as possible.

Where should I register for my GP Services?

You also need to think carefully about where you register for GP services. If you register at a practice near your university, you will have to go there for any referrals, prescriptions or vaccinations. During the holidays, you can still register with us as a temporary patient, but we would be unable to refer you and we would have to charge you for any travel vaccinations as these are only available free of charge from your registered GP. Alternatively, you can remain registered with us whilst you are at university and we can continue to provide all your GP services.

NHS ChoicesIf you have a good experience when visiting our

Woodcote Medical and private patients. We stock a full range of competitively-priced vaccines and are a designated Yellow Fever vaccination centre.

Advice when booking an appointment

If you are planning on travelling abroad, please ensure you contact the surgery at least 6 to 8 weeks prior to travelling. This should allow us sufficient time to offer advice, make the relevant appointments and ensure that you are adequately covered before travel.

Please note there are charges for some vaccinations and details of these charges are available online, at reception or from the travel clinic nurse.
