1 Summer News from Fairport High School… August 2019 Dear Parents and Students, I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying the remainder of your summer vacation. In just a few weeks we will be back in school and before you know it we will be well under way. As you can imagine our staff has been busy over the summer preparing with great expectations for the coming year. In the meantime our staff has worked diligently to do some of the traditional prep and we will be ready for students. Throughout the summer we have hired a few new teachers and support staff and we welcome them to the Fairport family. Although we miss the collective experience of our retirees we wish them well in their new endeavors. As you and your children continue your preparations for the fall, I’d like to share a few dates and events that will assist you in your planning: August 15– School will be open from 12:30 – 3:00 for incoming sophomores to tour the building. August 19 - Schedules mailed home. August 21 to August 28 -all of the counselors will be in the building to assist with needed schedule changes that may result from summer school outcomes or a decision to change an elective course. Please note that we cannot honor requests for personal preference changes such as the choice of a particular teacher, assignment to a particular lunch period or placement of a study hall earlier or later in the day. September 4 - First day of classes: a full day of school. September 19 (6:45PM) – Meet the Teacher night for all parents. This evening provides a great opportunity for you to meet your children’s teachers and learn about the expectations in each of their classes. Speaking of expectations, many parents call the school to ask for a “supply list” for their child’s classes. Given the great variations from one teacher to another and from one course to another, it’s not possible to generate a single generic list. The teachers will communicate their particular requirements during the first week of school. The single exception to this is in the area of Mathematics for the higher level courses (Algebra 2 and higher) where a graphing calculator is needed. The TI-84 Plus CE is the best choice, but the TI-84 Plus C and TI-84 Plus are also models that work well for these courses. The school does have some of these calculators available but students generally find it to be much more effective to have their own if that is at all possible. We look forward to working with all of you in the coming year to provide a safe and productive learning environment for everyone to succeed. Respectfully, Robert G. Clark Principal Fairport High School

Summer News from Fairport High School…

August 2019

Dear Parents and Students, I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying the remainder of your summer vacation. As you and your children continue your preparations for the fall, I’d like to share a few dates and events that will assist you in your planning:

• August 15– School will be open from 12:30 – 3:00 for incoming sophomores to tour the building.

• August 19 - Schedules mailed home. • August 21 to August 28 -all of the counselors

will be in the building to assist with needed schedule changes that may result from summer school outcomes or a decision to change an elective course. Please note that we cannot honor requests for personal preference changes such as the choice of a particular teacher, assignment to a particular lunch period or placement of a study hall earlier or later in the day.

• September 4 - First day of classes: a full day of school.

• September 19 (6:45PM) – Meet the Teacher night for all parents.

Respectfully,

Communication from School….

Open communication between school and home is essential for our work with students. To that end we maintain a weekly e-newsletter with regular updates on events at FHS. In order to sign up for the newsletter, simply go to the FHS website and click on the “Register for E-News” button on the left hand side of the page and fill out the form. This also allows you to sign up for other schools’ newsletters and flyers as well if you have children in other Fairport schools. Also, please follow us on Instagram and Twitter @fairport_high. You will find regular updates on student activities throughout the school year.

Due to the increased usage of the Parent Portal by families, we will no longer provide 5 week progress reports. However, we will continue to “freeze” running averages at the 5 week mark of each quarter to determine eligibility for additional academic support and participation in extracurricular activities.

Teachers are encouraged to call parents with the good, and where necessary, the not-so-good news. The progress reports serve to keep parents informed of student progress although an actual numeric grade is not included.

High school students are, of course, frequently taking tests in class, completing projects, etc. Normally test results are back to the students within a week, and the opportunity to review the exam is provided. Again, parents are encouraged to call the guidance office to arrange a conference whenever necessary. The ten-week marking periods are as follows:

1st Marking Period September 4, 2019 – November 8, 2019

2nd Marking Period November 12, 2019 – January 24, 2020

3rd Marking Period January 27, 2020 – March 27, 2020

4th Marking Period March 30, 2020 – June 12, 2020

******************************************************************

Tentative schedules will be mailed to your home mid-August. Official schedules will be distributed in your first period class.

Building Access & Late Transportation….

Fairport High School will be open to students at 6:30 am every morning. After 4:00 pm, those who participate in after school clubs, community organizations, and/or sports will still be able to utilize the back of the building, but will not be permitted to access their lockers or classrooms. Students involved in extra-curricular activities should be supervised by an adult and will not be permitted to loiter in the back of the building. Additionally, if for any reason you or your son/daughter needs to enter the building after 7:20am, once the school day has started, you must enter at the flagpole entrance building and sign-in at the attendance office; all other doors will be locked. We appreciate your support in providing a safe environment for all students and staff and look forward to the start of a great year! Please feel free to contact any of the building administrators with any questions or concerns.

From the Attendance Office….

Call us: 421-2105. Our answering machine is on 24/7!

Regular attendance to class is one of the most important aspects of a student’s educational program. This ensures the effectiveness of the learning process and provides for an environment which is conducive to group and individual learning. Safety: The attendance office will always err on the side of caution when it comes to student attendance. If we are unsure of the validity of a note or phone call, we will contact a parent. Please do not take offense to this as we are merely keeping our students’ best interests at heart. Absent: A parent/guardian must call the Attendance Office each day a student is absent. The information we need is the reason for the absence and the length of time (if known). Late Arrival: A parent/guardian must call the Attendance Office if a student is coming to school late. Please provide the reason for the late arrival and estimated time the student will be at school. All students must be dropped off in front of the building (lot A) and sign in at the Attendance Office before going to class! Early Dismissal: A note or a phone call from a parent/guardian is required if a student needs to be dismissed from school early. Please share the time the student is leaving and the reason for the early dismissal. Notes/phone calls should come to the Attendance Office prior to second period (8:10am) the day of the early dismissal. Students will receive early dismissal passes at the Attendance Office and sign themselves out prior to leaving school. Students may be picked up either at the second parking lot or at the back of the school, near the Athletic Office. Parents/guardians do not need to come in to school to sign their students out. Sick Students: Please remind your child that if they are feeling ill, they need to report to the Health Office. Our nurses will assess the situation and contact parents if they feel the student should go home. Students should not determine on their own, without consulting our school nurses and/or parents, their ability to stay in school.

The Importance of Homework and How a Parent Can Help…. Homework is a component of the student’s day that needs to be carefully managed. So many of our students have obligations after school that it can be very easy to procrastinate or be neglectful when it comes to homework. However, there is a strong correlation between student success and homework completion. Besides the obvious impact on the quarterly grade, the skill development and practice that homework provides is the most important facet.

Parents play an important role by assisting in the following:

• Reinforcing the importance of completing homework and being positive with the approach. • Helping establish a routine for homework completion and overall organization during the first week of school so that

your child does not fall into bad habits. • Stay informed. Communicate with your child and their teachers to stay attuned to what is needed for completion.

Student Ambassador Program….

The Student Ambassador Program is a club for current FHS students who want to welcome students that are new to the Fairport district. As an ambassador, you help the new students navigate their schedules, meet new people, and become a part of the school culture. Students who are interested in becoming a student ambassador must attend one of the mandatory training sessions listed below. The training is for new ambassadors who would like to be a part of the program; ambassadors that have already been trained do not need to attend.

Wednesday, August 21st 10:00 a.m. OR 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 27th 10:00 a.m. OR 1:00 p.m.

All trainings will be held in the FHS Guidance Library on the 2nd floor and will last about a half hour.

Feel free to contact Ms. Rowe at [email protected] if you have any questions. Hope to see you there!

Peer Tutoring and Mentoring is a Way to Offer Support….

At FHS, we want every student to be successful and we will continue to explore opportunities to help students. One such opportunity that has been successful is our Peer Tutoring program, where a student in need of help in a particular subject can be paired up with a student who feels comfortable tutoring in that subject. Mrs. Newtown, one of our guidance counselors, does a great job facilitating this program. There will also be an overall mentor component to this program for younger students who may benefit from connecting with an upperclassman during study hall and “checking in” on a regular basis. Students interested in becoming a tutor/mentor can access information, criteria and the paperwork to become a Peer Tutor/Mentor on the Fairport High School website under Guidance Office and Peer Tutoring and Mentoring. The first club meeting will be held Tuesday, September 10 at 2:20. Location TBD. Please listen to announcements. Students in need of tutoring can see their guidance counselor or Mrs. Newtown during the school year. Parents reading this

over the summer who think that their child may benefit from this program and have questions can contact Francine Newtown, school counselor, at 421-2108 or [email protected].

Health Office Information…

Hours: 7:00am – 3:00pm Phone: 421-2119, FAX: 421-2326.

PHYSICALS – ALL 10th grade and all new students entering the district are required to have a physical examination. Forms are due to the health office by October 4, 2019. Physical forms are available at the health office or online. If your student has already had a physical, send the completed physical form to the FHS health office as soon as possible. The form can be mailed, faxed to 421-2326 or scanned and emailed to the school nurse. If your student has not had a physical, please schedule an appointment with your child’s physician at this time. Students participating in sports need a current physical, which is valid for one calendar year.

CONTACT LENS WEARERS – The health office does NOT supply saline, contact solution or lens cases. Students should keep a supply either in their locker or backpack. Please make these items part of your back-to-school shopping.

DOCTOR NOTES – If a student has an injury, minor/major/oral surgery, or extended illness (ex: mono), please request a note from your doctor. Any head injury will require a doctor’s note stating the diagnosis and listing restrictions or clearance. All doctor’s notes should state the restrictions necessary for PE class/sports and/or the school day. A note stating that the student is cleared to participate is also required. See the district website for more information about return-to-play after head injury. If your student is signing up for a fall sport, bring the doctor’s notes to the interview with the nurse. This is especially important if the illness/injury/surgery occurred after the end of school when the doctor‘s note would not be on file. All doctor notes should be brought to the health office first, where copies will be made as needed for the PE teacher, coach, or trainer.

MEDICATIONS – ALL medications taken during the school day or school activities require a doctor’s order with specific instructions, a parent note, and the medication in the original container. Medications are to be brought to the health office with the above paperwork by the parent. This includes all over-the-counter items, such as Tylenol or Advil. If your student needs to carry a medication, such as an inhaler or EpiPen, a Self-Medication Release form also needs to be completed.

WEBPAGE – The nurses’ webpage is at https://fairport.org/our-schools/fairport-high-school/nurse/ Physical forms and medication forms along with other information are available on this webpage.

*Please call the Health Office if you have any questions or concerns or if you need an appointment to meet with the Nurses prior to the start of school.

Page 10: Summer News from Fairport High School…€¦ · Matthew Stevens Assistant Superintendent for Business ... Official schedules will be distributed in your first period class. Building

Alco-Sensors to be used for Safety of Students….

The health and safety of all students and staff is of prime importance in the Fairport School District. With this in mind, the district made an Alco-Sensor available in the nurses’ office. The Alco-Sensor is a blood-alcohol device that will be used when students are suspected of drinking. The device identifies the amount of alcohol that has been consumed. This information is particularly important in determining whether a student’s alcohol level has reached the point where medical treatment is required.

The Alco-Sensor test will be administered by the school nurse or an administrator in the privacy of the nurse’s examining room, and at least two people (nurse and administrator) will be in attendance. When possible, the District’s Substance Abuse Counselor will also be available.

Specific procedures will be followed when a student appears impaired, and the student will always be asked to voluntarily cooperate with these procedures. The student will be taken to the nurse’s office and parents will be contacted immediately for permission to administer the test. If a parent cannot be reached, and the student’s medical safety is a concern, the test may be administered with student compliance and medical procedures may be followed. School personnel will continue to try to contact the parents. In the event that parent or student permission is not granted for the Alco-Sensor test, the parent will be requested to transport the child home or to the hospital immediately. Under no circumstance will a student be allowed to leave alone.
