Jesus said ”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” MaAhew 11:28

New Jerusalem ChurchCirca 1845
The foundation of the Boston Society of the New Jerusalem (BSNJ) can be traced back to 1784 and the Green Dragon Tavern in Boston. It was then and there that admirers of, and those interested in learning more about, Emanuel Swedenborg first met to hear a lecture on Swedenborg by James Glen. In 1818, twelve people, some of whom were among the early “Green Dragon Tavern crowd,” organized a Swedenborgian Church in the city. Chartered in 1823, the Boston Society of the New Jerusalem, Inc. is the first Swedenborgian Church established in Massachusetts. Members of the Church met at several locations before finally settling in 1845 at its present location atop Beacon Hill. The location inspired the name by which many today know the society: the Church on the Hill (Swedenborgian). Through the years, noted BSNJ members include Timothy Harrington Carter, publisher, and founder of the Old Corner Book Store; Sampson Reed, writer and mentor of Ralph Waldo Emerson; Lydia Maria Child, author, social activist and abolitionist; Warren Felt Evans, writer and healer;
HISTORY OF THE CHURCH
Theophilus Parsons, dean of Harvard Law School; Otis Clapp, apothecary, publisher, member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, co-founder of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), Boston University, and and founder of The Home for Little Wanderers; Theophilus P. Chandler, architect; Clarence Barron, financier, editor of the Wall Street Journal, and president of Dow Jones; George James Webb, hymnologist; and The Honorable Malcolm Nichols, Mayor of Boston. A beautiful Gothic Revival structure served the membership until the 1960s when it was replaced with a new Church building and an eighteen story high- rise apartment. Today, the main sanctuary of the Church is accessible from Bowdoin Street. The Church has also served as a place of worship and gatherings for the local Muslim Community and other faith-based communities. The Church has organizes and runs many programs to meet the needs of the Church community and larger surrounding neighborhood.
Use of the Church facility is offered to human service and outreach organizations.

From Craig Williams
Hi everyone, I hope everyone has a way to get out of the heat and is staying hydrated. As I am typing this, it is well into the 90’s outside. As you can see on the church calendar on the back (and as it said in the weekly mailing) the church office will be closed from July 1 - July 8 in honor of Independence Day. That being said, there will be no church Service on July 7. I hope you all have a chance to get out of work for a day or two and get outside to enjoy the weather. We will be continuing to host our senior lunch on the third Wednesday of the month throughout the summer. We will open our space to people from 11 AM - 4 PM. Everyone is welcome to come in to get out the heat, eat a nice meal, and maybe watch a movie. We have put together and senior lunch committee to organize and prepare the meals. We will also continue to hold out Vagabonds Open Mic Coffee House from 7:30-11 PM on the same Wednesday as senior lunch. These have proven to be successful and are always a good time. As always, we will not be holding our monthly Church Council or Board of Trustee meetings in July or August. They will resume in September.
We will be having our President’s Rooftop Party on August 3. It will be on the roof of Bostonview apartments. This is always a fun event with food, drinks, and friends. The party will start at 3 PM and will end when Mary puts the lamp shade on her head. Everyone is invited. In June’s Members Meeting we voted in three new church members. We would like to welcome Donald Gonzalez, Vicki Davis, and Christopher Smith! We will be hosting a lot of Max Reger Foundation Series concerts in July. The dates can be found on page 5. This is a wonderful foundation that helps young musicians get the training that they deserve to make them better musicians. I highly recommend attending as many of these concerts as you can. Church on the Hill will be sponsoring the Oasis Monday Night Dinner on Monday, July 29th. If anyone would like to volunteer to help serve food that night, please talk to me in the office. I have recently taken over the overseeing of that weekly dinner and it is a truly humbling experience. I hope everyone has a great summer and gets a chance to get outside and enjoy the weather while it lasts. We have some big plans here at the church and look forward to the beginning of Church Season in September. Pages 6-8 show some events that are going on around the city in July. Go red Sox!

CityReach participants secure free shower facilities for un-housed people on Martha's Vineyard
CityReach is an overnight service-learning opportunity for high school and college students, and adults, offered by common cathedral. We hire un-housed and formerly un-housed members of the common cathedral community to staff the event - to tell their stories, their experience of homelessness, so participants can hear first hand of the challenges they face on the streets and in the shelters. Then the CityReach staffers take participants on tours of Boston - where they sleep, eat, spend time - places that are important to them. The next morning, participants offer service by doing street outreach, and by inviting needy people inside to receive food and clothing. The most important part for participants is invariably the interactions they have with the CityReach staff, or homeless guides. Here is a letter from a Martha's Vineyard youth leader about how his group made use of their experience at CityReach:
"Today the "Grace Gang" that attended CityReach in May, convinced the YMCA to offer free showers to homeless people one day a week. WE, meaning the "Gang" will provide supervision, cosmetics, dry towels, and sack lunches.
"Elizabeth, one of our homeless guides (at CityReach), suggested that we begin with something island homeless people need, which we could deliver. The idea being we begin to gain credibility with the island homeless community. We'll make a similar presentation to the Superintendent of Schools, with an eye towards a second day each week of showers available at the high school. "If you should run into Elizabeth, Batman, or Paul, all guides to us, tell them we still wear our crosses, and are continuing to use what they taught us to help others." John Pearson Grace Episcopal Church, Vineyard Haven
We are offering eleven CityReach sessions in the upcoming academic year:
