Summer intern program: Each summer, ISO New England welcomes approximately 25-30 interns for an eleven-week intern program (June-August) that provides students with an excellent platform for professional growth and development, and a head start on building career credentials. Interns are involved from day one in meaningful projects that expand their technical, business, and communication skills. Beyond working in their designated departments, interns attend lunches with the senior management team, participate in field trips to industry sites to gain greater perspective on the wholesale electricity industry, and at the conclusion of the program, interns showcase their accomplishments through presentations to senior staff. Interns work full-time, 40 hours a week and are paid competitive salaries. There are housing stipends available for students who live outside a 35 mile radius from our campuses in Holyoke, MA and Windsor, CT. Intern – Data Architecture & Development #1 Minimum Education Level: Rising Junior Preferred Majors: Information Technology or Information Systems related-degrees with an emphasis more on data management and less on computer science Department: The Data Architecture & Development team provides data architecture, business intelligence, and data warehousing support to the entire Enterprise, and provides Data Governance within Business Intelligence for the Enterprise Data Warehouse. Job Description: The Data Governance Analyst intern position provides support for the day to day operations of the Data Governance Program, along with assisting in various key Data Governance initiatives and projects to ensure the highest quality data in the Enterprise Data Warehouse. 3. Intern – IT/Energy Management System Minimum Education Level: Rising Sophomore Preferred Majors: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics Department: The IT-EMS department maintains the Day Ahead Markets systems, Energy Management System (EMS), and Real-time Markets that are core systems critical to the operation of the New England power grid and energy markets. Job Description: The role focuses primarily on supporting development, testing, and integration efforts in the EMS group. The role requires basic programming and computer skills in one or more of the areas supported by the EMS department (C++, Perl, Java, SQL, etc.). The role also requires that the candidate be able to bring an engineering and/or an IT perspective to their work. The Intern will be taught everything they need to know about development, testing, and integration of applications. In the process the intern will learn about the systems that maintain the reliability of the ISO New England power grid and administer the wholesale electricity markets. Responsibilities: Testing Electricity Markets Clearing and EMS software Requirements:

Intern – IT, Power System Modeling Management Minimum Education Level: Rising Senior Preferred Majors: Power Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science Department: The Power System Modeling Department is tasked with design, testing and implementation of power system model changes to the ISO Energy Management System (EMS) with focus on power system applications, including power flow, state estimation, contingency analysis, and markets applications. Job Description: As an intern in the PSM department, you will be developing software that drives high-visibility displays used by system operators and many groups throughout ISO New England. Responsibilities:

• Software design from research and requirements gathering through to architecture design, programming, and testing.

• Modeling New England substations using WebFG display builder software. • Various related tasks as assigned.

Requirements:

• Software design experience, preferably in multiple programming languages. • Excellent analytical and creative problem solving skills. • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail. • Ability to work independently and in a small team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Software design experience from previous job or internships. Portfolio a plus. • Power Systems experience. • Graduate student preferred, but will consider a rising senior with other met requirements. • Programming languages that are a plus: Perl, C++. • Human Computer Interaction / User Interface experience.

5. Intern – IT, Power System Modeling Management – MOD Group Minimum Education Level: Rising Senior Preferred Majors: Power Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science Department: The Power System Modeling Department is tasked with design, testing and implementation of power system model changes to the ISO Energy Management System (EMS) with focus on power system applications, including power flow, state estimation, contingency analysis, and markets applications. Job Description: The intern will assist Power System Modeling with data handling, updating the New England model, creating planning study cases for Transmission Owners, updating generation profiles by collating data from various sources and reviewing and maintaining contingencies, project data, load profiles and resource data. Responsibilities:

• Uploading to and maintaining data in the Model On Demand application and the Basecase Database. • Assisting MOD Engineers with routine data-intensive tasks related to steady state and stability cases. • Performing preliminary review of modeling data received to correct gross data, syntax, and convention errors.

Requirements:

• Excellent analytical and creative problem solving skills. • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail. • Ability to work independently and in a small team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

6-9. Interns – Operations Performance, Training & Integration (OPTI) (4 Positions) *Please note: OPTI interns will be located in Windsor, CT and will be required to travel between the Windsor campus and the Holyoke, MA campus throughout the summer to participate in the full internship program. Minimum Education Level: Rising Sophomore Preferred Majors: Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research Department Description: The Operations Performance, Training & Integration (OPTI) group performs several critical functions in support of the ISO System Operations department’s role of reliably and efficiently operating the New England Bulk Electric System. Design and development of system operator tools – OPTI actively collaborates with internal and external parties to develop new and modified applications used by ISO system operations staff in real-time operation of the New England Bulk Electric System. This includes working with the end users and downstream customers to develop business requirements, interfacing with developers to ensure adherence to business requirements and performance of business owner testing. When an exigent need for an application or display arises, OPTI develops quick turnaround solutions, bridging the gap to a permanent solution. Procedure Development – OPTI maintains the suite of operating procedures used by ISO New England System Operators to manage the Bulk Electric System. OPTI staff works with end users and subject matter experts to reflect rule changes, application enhancements and topology through the creation and revision of procedures. Operator Training – OPTI is responsible for the development and implementation of ISO System Operator and System Operations support staff training. OPTI develops instructional material for classroom and computer based training. OPTI employs a fully functional transmission and market based simulator used to provide hands on training to System Operators. Operations Analysis – OPTI provides analysis of system, system resource, system operator tool and system operator performance during normal and emergency conditions. Results of these analyses are employed internally to drive improvements in procedures, System Operator tools, displays and human performance. Resource Integration – OPTI provides input and analysis toward integrating alternative energy resources such as wind, solar and fuel cells into the ISO New England Energy Management System. Job Description: This position is intended for undergraduates with problem solving skills, a familiarity with application development, and an understanding of statistical analysis. Computer applications are built using the Microsoft Office Suite (primarily Excel and VBA) for the purpose of gathering and redistribution of information or analysis or using C# for the purpose of user interface or automated application execution. Each application is developed and deployed with short turnaround time, from conception to production. Interns will be responsible for working with the end users to determine their needs, delivering products that meet their needs, and providing training to the users on how the applications are to be used. Responsibilities:

• Numerical analysis of a varying degree of power system data. • Simple application development, primarily using Excel, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), MS Access, and Visual C#. • Maintenance of existing applications using the same platforms. • Writing user manuals and developer documentation for existing applications.

Requirements:

• Information analysis capability. • Programming ability, prefer familiarity with VBA. • A conceptual knowledge of databases and SQL. • An understanding of data structures and methods for the transfer of data between applications. • An understanding of basic statistical analysis concepts. • Communication skills for developing requirements. • Creative problem solving skills to quickly find solutions for the end users. • Basic understanding of engineering concepts related to the electric power industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Students interested in small data analysis or programming beyond the minimum requirements to complete projects/courses in school – i.e. Hobbyists.

• Students local to Windsor, CT or surrounding areas.

10. Intern – Operations, Long Term Outage Coordination Minimum Education Level: Rising Junior Preferred Majors: Electrical Engineering and/or Power Systems Engineering Department: Operations Support Services group that performs stability and voltage analysis, outage coordination and economic evaluation to minimize overall production cost and maintain transmission grid reliability through all contingencies. The Long Term Outage Coordination group falls within the Operations Support Services department. The Long Term Outage Coordination group is responsible for performing reliability assessments and congestion impacts for all outage requests by generators and transmission owners, and approves or denies the outages based on the estimated impact to reliability. The group develops and publishes long term generator and transmission maintenance schedules and coordinates outage schedules with adjacent Reliability Coordinators, Local Control Centers, and generators to minimize reliability and economic impact. Job Description: The intern will perform reliability assessment and congestion impact analysis for outage requests.

• Reviews and approves/denies transmission and generation outages. • Develops and publishes long term generator and transmission maintenance schedules. • Coordinates outage schedules with adjacent Reliability Coordinators, Local Control Centers and generators to

minimize reliability and economic impact. This position is responsible for analyzing as well as coordinating long term transmission outage requests with respective generator outage plants to achieve outage schedules that can be reliably implemented while striving to minimize overall congestion costs. Responsibilities:

• Receive and process long term transmission and generation outage requests in accordance with the requirements in the NEPOOL Operating Procedure #3 and #5 as well as applicable System Operating Procedures.

• Using custom software, perform economic analysis of potential congestion costs resulting from various outage scenarios.

• Conduct reliability studies and support projects related to Transmission and Generation Outage Coordination as assigned.

• Collect technical data in support of outage scheduling work and congestion savings. Requirements:

• Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Electrical Engineering degree program, concentration in power systems is desirable.

• Candidate must possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications:

• Excellent computer skills. • Some power courses completed with a familiarity with load flow programs or energy management systems.

Intern – Business Architecture and Technology: Power System Model Validation #1 Minimum Education Level: PhD Preferred Majors: Electrical Engineering Department: The Business Architecture and Technology (BAT) department is responsible for research and development at ISO New England. BAT provides technical consultation and quantitative analysis services to other departments in the company. It makes significant contributions to improving the system reliability and increasing market efficiency in the ISO New England control area. Job Description: The intern will help streamline the power system dynamic model validation at ISO New England. He/she will use EPRI’s PPPD tool and actual PMU measurements to validate power plant models. He/she will also benchmark the online dynamic simulation against the PMU measurements and give recommendations on possible improvement of EMS model for dynamic stability assessment.

Responsibilities: • Get familiar with the PPPD tool and use it for power plant model validation. • Compare the event simulation of EMS model against actual PMU measurements. • Recommend possible EMS model improvements in terms of dynamic stability assessment.

Requirements:

• Familiarity with PowerTech Lab’s TSAT software. • Understanding of power flow dynamic stability in power systems. • PhD student in Power Systems.

Intern – Business Architecture and Technology: Power System Model Validation #2 Minimum Education Level: PhD Preferred Majors: Electrical Engineering Department: The Business Architecture and Technology (BAT) department is responsible for research and development at ISO New England. BAT provides technical consultation and quantitative analysis services to other departments in the company. It makes significant contributions to improving the system reliability and increasing market efficiency in the ISO New England control area. Job Description: The intern will assist with the increased use of PMU measurements for operational needs. The scope of the work will cover different aspects including digital PMU calibration, and use of PMU data for locating the source of oscillations and for monitoring of the system security. Responsibilities:

• Become familiar with PMU measurements available at ISO New England. • Research a possible solution for improving security monitoring by using PMU voltage angles. • Using PMU date, investigate needed enhancements to apply the DEF method for oscillation source location. • Evaluate a possible solution for the extension of digital PMU calibration for a multi-element interconnected

network. Requirements:

• Familiarity with PowerWorld or PowerTech Lab’s software. • Understanding of power flow and security in power systems. • PhD student in Power Systems.

Intern – Business Architecture and Technology: Real-time Pricing Enhancements Minimum Education Level: PhD Preferred Majors: Industrial Engineering or Operations Research Department: The Business Architecture and Technology (BAT) department is responsible for research and development at ISO New England. BAT provides technical consultation and quantitative analysis services to other departments in the company. It makes significant contributions to improving the system reliability and increasing market efficiency in the ISO New England control area. Job Description: There is no theoretically “perfect” pricing algorithm for electricity markets because of nonconvexities. Therefore, a variety of methods have been proposed and implemented by ISOs. A recent investigation into Convex Hull Pricing by the BAT department has raised two important questions:

• Can current ISO pricing methods rightly be called “approximations” of Convex Hull Pricing? • Is there a “best approximation” of the Convex Hull Pricing method?

The intern will rigorously study these questions to help with ISO New England’s ongoing pricing enhancement project. Responsibilities:

• Define the properties of an approximated optimal solution. • Investigate how well current ISO pricing methods fit into the approximation framework. • Develop/Improve approximation methods for Convex Hull Pricing. • Assess whether proposed approximations of Convex Hull Pricing are computationally feasible.

Requirements:

• Strong background in optimization theory. • Good analytical skills • Curiosity about approximation theory. • Computer programming skills are a plus.

Intern – Business Architecture and Technology: Decomposition Large-scale Linear Programming Minimum Education Level: PhD Preferred Majors: Operations Research, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Department: The Business Architecture and Technology (BAT) department is responsible for research and development at ISO New England. BAT provides technical consultation and quantitative analysis services to other departments in the company. It makes significant contributions to improving the system reliability and increasing market efficiency in the ISO New England control area. Job Description: The intern will implement, test, and compare several decomposition algorithms on large-scale linear problems.

Responsibilities: • Implement decomposition algorithms in an appropriate environment. • Select or create large-scale linear problems for testing. • Test the problems to compare the performance and quality of different decomposition algorithms.

Requirements:

• Strong background in mathematical programming. • Familiarity with mathematical modeling languages. • Strong computer programming skills. • Experience or knowledge in cloud computing.

Intern – Business Architecture and Technology: Energy Storage Modeling Minimum Education Level: PhD Preferred Majors: Operations Research or closely related discipline Department: The Business Architecture and Technology (BAT) department is responsible for research and development at ISO New England. BAT provides technical consultation and quantitative analysis services to other departments in the company. It makes significant contributions to improving the system reliability and increasing market efficiency in the ISO New England control area. Job Description: The intern will develop a mathematical model for energy storage, investigate its market impact, and analyze the operational performance of energy storage.

Responsibilities: • Conduct a literature review of energy storage models and existing storage technologies. • Develop a general mathematical model that can represent various types of energy storage. • Determine the bidding parameters for the storage and develop a methodology to analyze the bidding behaviors

of that storage. Requirements:

• Extensive experience with operations research and power system modeling. • Ability to investigate issues and solve problems both independently and collaboratively. • Ability to learn new concepts quickly. • Strong communication and presentation skills. • In 3rd or 4th year of a PhD program in Operations Research or closely related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with MatLab or GAMS. • Good understanding of electricity markets.

Intern – System Planning: Forecasting Support Minimum Education Level: Rising Junior Preferred Majors: Engineering, Economics, Statistics, or Meteorology Department: The Forecasting Team in System Planning is responsible for forecasting electricity demand, energy efficiency (EE), and solar photovoltaic (PV) resources. These responsibilities span both short-term forecasting activities in support of (for example) ISO New England’s administration of the Day Ahead Market, as well as ten-year forecasts that guide ISO New England’s long-term planning activities. Job Description: Assist with data acquisition, analysis, and modeling in support of a variety of load, EE, and PV forecasting activities.

Intern – System Planning: Regional Planning & Coordination Minimum Education Level: Rising Sophomore Preferred Majors: Liberal Arts, Humanities, Technical Writing Department: Regional Planning and Coordination (RPC) is responsible for producing ISO’s ten-year Regional System Plan covering requirements and plans for load, resources, transmission, and issues that affect the future power system. RPC supports the Planning Advisory Committee (PAC), which is the major stakeholder group for the Regional System Plan. RPC is also responsible for developing and coordinating the Northeast Coordinated System Plan with both New York ISO and PJM (other eastern region U.S. ISOs). RPC leads the Inter-Area Planning Stakeholder Advisory Committee (IPSAC) meetings to obtain stakeholder input on interregional planning matters. RPC tracks environmental regulations and provides analysis of environmental issues that can affect the power system and leads an Environmental Advisor Group that supports the PAC. RPC supports the strategic planning issues, such as fuel diversity and the integration of variable resources (wind and solar, for ex.). The group is leading ISO’s efforts to produce a forecast of distributed generation resources, especially photovoltaic resources, and publishes several documents addressing environmental and photovoltaic issues. RPC is conducting cutting edge photovoltaic research projects with the U.S. Department of Energy. Job Description: The Regional System Plan (RSP) is issued every odd year. PAC members require easy access to planning reports and other materials relating to the RSP. Intern – System Planning: Resource Adequacy Minimum Education Level: Rising Junior Preferred Majors: Engineering – Electrical, Industrial, or Mechanical Department: As the power grid continues to evolve with the changing demands on the infrastructure and integration of new technologies, many questions regarding the future operability of the power system must be addressed. In an effort to address these what-if questions, the Resource Adequacy group in System Planning performs long-term studies on the changing landscape of resources in the New England electric power footprint. These studies take existing information, along with assumptions about the future, and use them in power system simulation software to analyze the system and develop metrics for different sensitivity scenarios. Job Description: Economic studies are developed and presented to stakeholders to provide metrics depicting various system-expansion scenarios that inform stakeholders about the relative merits (or lack of merits) associated with selected possible future scenarios. Past scenarios have assessed system performance at a higher level, such as possible additional imports from Canada, resource retirements, and resource additions. The key metrics developed include estimates of production costs, transmission congestion, electric energy costs for New England consumers, and a number of others. These metrics suggest the most economical locations for resource development and the least economical locations for resource retirements. Responsibilities:

• Reviewing ISO New England’s operations history, resource characteristics and transmission topology to update study inputs.

• Research key study topics, may include wind and solar energy, to enhance understanding and modeling details. • Document findings and procedures through reports and presentations.

As described in Market Rule 1, the FCM is designed to purchase sufficient capacity (ability to supply megawatts) for reliable system operation for a future year at competitive prices. Job Description: The intern is responsible for providing assistance in the performance of FCM qualification data analyses to ensure consistency with Market Rule 1. The intern will work with the Forward Capacity Tracking System (FCTS) database to perform testing, verification of data and statistical analyses on a daily basis, and will interface regularly with other departments and potentially external parties, like companies sponsoring new resource projects such as new wind farms or gas plants. The department is authorized to implement mitigation procedures to deter market behavior that may interfere with the competitive and efficient operation of the markets. To accomplish this, the Market Monitoring & Mitigation Department routinely collects and analyzes information on participants’ market behavior, including possible withholding of generation resources from the markets either through their bidding behavior or by falsely declaring resources unavailable. Job Description: Work with a diverse group of analysts, engineers and economists to monitor wholesale market outcomes and market participant behavior with a focus on assisting in the evaluation of new supply offers and delist bids submitted for the Forward Capacity Auction. Responsibilities: The intern will assist the department in evaluation of new supply offers and delist bids submitted for inclusion in the ninth Forward Capacity Auction (FCA9). This will include summarizing the submittals made to management and staff, as well as helping the IMM analysts review the cost information included in the offers and bids.
