Why Participating in the Membership Drive isimportant for you and the North Shore Chamber

If you are a business owner, theanswer is simple: the chamber is theonly organization that day in and dayout speaks up for business before leg-islative and regulatory bodies. It isthe 365-day visible advocate promot-ing and protecting private businessinterests. If, however, you are not an owner, the answer does not appear asstraightforward but the benefits toyou are just as important - jobs andtaxes. Our state is in the midst of tougheconomic factors - Stagnant Growthin the Job Market; Jobs relocatingoverseas; Higher Taxes on businessand less Government support. This is devastating to our communityand is serving to expedite the down-ward spiral of job losses and highertaxes causing working families toleave, leading to fewer children inschool, and lower local spending, fewer taxpayers, less income to busi-ness, decreased tax revenue, highertaxes and fewer private opportuni-ties, in turn leading to more peopleleaving, etc. More than half of the Region's jobscorrelate in the non-private sector. The Chamber is the advocate for theentrepreneur and other private busi-ness. These are the jobs that createjobs that pay excise and income taxeswhich, of course, support the pay-ment of wages for public employees. Public employees do pay income

taxes, but their earnings are paidentirely by taxes. Stated simply, entrepreneurs and private employ-ment create the most valuable jobs inour society. While government jobs are impor-tant, as far as payback to society isconcerned, and to retain a sustain-able, self-sufficient community, theyjust don't compare to the private sec-tor.When a private sector job is created, society makes money. When a publicsector job is created, it costs societymoney. The Chamber is the championof the private sector - the championof job creation. Most Chamber members are smallbusinesses, having only a smallhandful of employees. Such busi-nesses are true entrepreneurs - theyrisk their money and time hopingto build a successful business usingtheir skills and hard work. It takes an act of courage to take arisk relying on only on your own skillset and work ethic. When these busi-nesses succeed, more jobs are createdand the wealth is spread around, tak-ing an important step in reversing thedownward spiral of private job lossand higher taxes. So, next time you walk into one ofour small businesses on the NorthShore, please tip your hat to the indi-viduals you encounter. His or hercourage in running that business ben-efits all of us. And remember, the Chamber's goalsare to assist these individuals and tomake sure that good jobs are created, and preserved, on the North Shore.Reprinted and adapted with permis-sion by Douglas R. Wright, TupperLake Chamber.

The Power of Conceptual Thinking toStrengthen Your Leadership

Enhance the abstract part of yourbrain to best convey your vision andstimulate creativity. The fourth in aseven-part series on leadership com-munication.In order to communicate most effec-tively with your staff--and bring out thebest in them--you have to relate tothem in all the different ways theythink. I've already written about com-munication strategies to appeal toyour analytical, structural, and socialpeople and in this, my fourth install-ment in a seven-part series on how tomost effectively speak with yourdiverse team, I'll cover conceptualcommunication.Today's world requires imagination, innovation, and vision. Countlessexperts have deemed this theConceptual Age and I agree. If theInformation Age was data, knowledge, and the left brain, the world hasmoved beyond it, and into a placewhere concepts feed everything else.

Lisa Bodell, the founder and CEO offuturethink, an innovation consultan-cy, says: "The best employees [andleaders] of the future will excel at cre-ative problem solving and differentways of thinking--synthesizing seem-ingly diverse things together for bettersolutions."For some, conceptual thinking comesnaturally. They have an intuitivesense of the bigger picture, an abilityto translate abstract thoughts, a pro-clivity for thinking in long-term hori-zons, and a desire to experiment andinvent new things. When I interviewed Jim Blanchard, retired CEO of Synovus, a largefinancial services company thatranked No. 1 on Fortune's inaugurallist of 100 Best Companies to Workfor in America, I was intrigued by howmuch of a natural conceptual thinkerhe is.
