Dear Parents/Carers,

Summer Holiday is probably the happiest period in a child’s life. Summer break of a little over 6 weeks is an excellent opportunity to make it a worthwhile period in a child's life. Outings, family get togethers and adventure should be the tone of time spent at home for a child. Children have had the longest period of time away from school friends, and family members for the longest period of their life. We hope with the good weather and the easing of the lockdown measures children will start to feel themselves again. The last few weeks away from school can still be a good time to engage in fun learning opportunities.

We have accumulated a list of educational tasks to keep your child engaged in healthy learning activities. Fun filled learning tasks to be done at home under your guidance can make the summer break more enjoyable.

Keep some evidence of what you have done: you may want to take photos, make videos or keep a journal.

The best entries will win awards which will be given out in September 2020; so get creative where you can!

You will be able to share your pictures/videos via email with your teacher in September.

In case children have lost their booklets or parents would like their own copy, the homework booklets are available to download from the school website.

Some parents will want their children to continue lessons and activities online. The government funded website will be sent out in a separate letter, detailing the Oak National Academy resources for you to use to support your child’s learning over the summer holiday.

Instructions - Please read the following carefully.

● Inside this booklet there are lots of learning challenges for you to complete.

● Try to complete a minimum of four tasks per subject.

● You can keep evidence of what you have done: you may want to take photos, make videos or keep a journal.

Week 1 Can someone catch you reading a book in a strange location.

“I caught my daughter reading in a tree!”

Ask an adult to take a picture of you reading in the strange location.

Week 2 Read to someone out loud for 10-20 minutes.

Try to imagine how one of the characters might speak…try different voices it’s fun!

Ask a member of your family to record a short 1 minute video. We would love to see some of the videos in September.

Week 3 Ask an adult to help you with facetime to read with a friend from Rushey Green Primary School.

Ask an adult to take a picture.

Week 4 Listen to an audio book, they are great fun.

Ask an adult to take a picture.

Week 5 Found a favourite author? Can you read two books by the same author?

Ask an adult to take a picture.

Week 6 Borrow and read a book from your local Library. Or find a charity book store to pick a book up for free or small donation.

Record a short 1 minute video of your visit.

In September bring this document to school and show to your class teacher.

Week 2 We love learning about each other, find out about your family and make a poster of your family tree. Where is everyone? Who’s the oldest? And youngest?

Week 3 A special box ….Collect a box of items which tell us about you and your life.

Be ready to present to your new class.

Week 4 Write a letter or a postcard to your class. Introduce yourself, tell us some interesting facts about yourself.

Be ready to present to your new class.

Week 5 Make a 5-pointed star with 5 wishes or goals you would like to achieve next school year.

Bring them into class in September for us all to see.

Week 6 Paint a scene from your favourite day out this holiday and prepare to present and talk about it to the class.

Week 1 Have a kids MasterChef competition at home.Keep meals simple – something such as pizza is perfect. This works especially well if the kids have a few friends over. Have a competition as to who makes the best pizza – Parents/carers can be the judges.

Week 2 Exploding Baggies – What do you get when you combine baking soda and vinegar in a plastic baggie? An expanding bag that pops! Make sure you do this activity outside.

Ask a member of your family to record a short 1 minute video. We would love to see some of the videos in September.

Week 3 How to Attract Fireflies – Learn how to attract fireflies so you can catch them or observe them up close. Such a classic summer evening activity!

Outdoor Learning Activity Evidence Date completed

Week 4 Visit a local park.

But not just any park, search on the internet and find a park that you haven’t been to before.

Ask an adult to take pictures of you visiting the Park.

Week 5 Make your own outdoor obstacle course.

You can be creative in making your own family-friendly obstacle course, like a laser maze.

Ask an adult to take pictures of your obstacle course.

Week 6 Make balloon and ping pong plates.

Balloon ping pong is a fun outdoor game for kids and would only need basic supplies to make. Have the kids design the paper plates and then tape the craft sticks at the back of each paper plate to create paddles. They can now hit the balloon back and forth.
