From the Editor’s deskSigning off on this summer guide as the final AWSUM issue for 2015 has been a pretty surreal experience. It’s a little hard to imagine that a full year has passed.

While we don’t always get the chance each month, to touch base with all the friends and contacts that we’ve managed to build up over the last year, I do want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation of the AWSUM community. Also to our AWSUM team, who have helped to build the AWSUM brand from 6 regions at the start of 2015 to 15 regions to date!

I hope you enjoy our second Summer Holiday Guide! It really does contain something for everyone: from what to do, markets to visit, interesting articles to some handy DIY ideas.

I encourage you to sit back with your feet up in the air and enjoy the read. May you all travel safely this festive season and have some quality family time. I, for one, look forward to some summer time!See you in 2016!

You cannot unscramble eggs, therefore you need to deal with the consequencesYou may prefer, fried. You may look at the other people sitting at the table enjoying their fried eggs and wish that you could have what they are having. The bottom line is, you can eat them, live with them and enjoy them just the same. It’s important to learn and teach our kids that if you want fried eggs, it’s best not scramble them in the first place. We share 3 easy egg recipes.

Ingredients:• 1 tablespoon unsalted butter,

softened• 8 tablespoons heavy cream• 8 large eggs• Salt and black pepper• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs

(such as parsley and dill)• Toast, for serving

Heat oven to 200° C. Coat four 4-ounce ramekins with the butter. In each ramekin, place 2 tablespoons cream. Crack 2 eggs into each ramekin; season with ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper.Bake until the whites are set, 10 to 12 minutes. Sprinkle with the herbs and serve with toast.

Ingredients:• 4 tablespoons olive oil, plus more

for the baking dish• 1 medium onion, chopped• 1 250-300g package button mush-

rooms, trimmed and quartered• 1/2cup chopped fresh flat-leaf

parsley• 6 large eggs• 2 cups whole milk• Salt and black pepper• 6 cups country bread, cut into

1-inch pieces• 1 cup Cheddar, grated• 4 cups mixed greens• 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar

• Heat oven to 180° C. Oil an 8-inch square baking dish. Heat 3 table-spoons of the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring, until tender, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook, tossing occasionally, until tender and any liquid has cooked off, 4 to 6 minutes more. Remove from heat and mix in the parsley.

• Meanwhile, in a bowl, whisk to-gether the eggs, milk, ¾ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper. Add the bread, cheese, and mushroom mixture and toss; transfer to the prepared dish. Bake until golden brown and set, 50 to 60 minutes.

• In a bowl, toss the greens with the vinegar, the remaining oil, and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper. Serve with the strata.

Coffee with Jean de VilliersAs the former captain of our national rugby team, Jean de Villiers announced his retirement from Test rugby after breaking his jaw in the Rugby World Cup pool game against Samoa, we managed to ask Jean a couple of questions over a cup of coffee, just before he and his family left for the English club, Leicester Tigers.Jean, also the brand ambassador for the Zurreal wellbeing and rewards pro-gramme, which is offered at no addition-al charge to all Resolution Health Med-ical Scheme and Spectramed Medical Scheme members, has 109 Test caps.

• Advise your security company if you are going away and ensure that you supply all the necessary information regarding nearby key holders, in case of an emergency.

• Inform your neighbours of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property.

• Stop all newspaper deliveries and ask a friend or neighbour to collect your post. A bulging post box is a dead giveaway that you are not at home.

• If hiring a house sitter, ensure that you teach them how to use your alarm correctly.

• Double check that you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving home.

• Ensure that all your outside locks are a minimum of four lever locks or dou-ble cylinder security locks.

• Never leave a key in the inside of an

outer door which has glass panels or glass near the door lock.

• Having security gates fitted on outer doors is a highly effective security measure that gives you an extra line of defence.

• Sliding doors can be secured sim-ply by placing a piece of timber cut to size in the sliding rail. Make sure that sliding doors cannot be lifted vertically.

• Full fencing and sturdy gates are a good deterrent.

• Have good exterior lighting, pref-erably on a timer.

• Do not leave tools like ladders or spades outside, as they can be used to break into your house.

• Clear signage indicating that you have security also helps to discourage burglars.

Beat the heat

“We are fortunate in South Africa to enjoy a wonderfully warm climate, however this comes with certain dangers that we must learn to mitigate through behavioural change during hot spells, particularly in humid regions such as parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga,” says Resolution Health Medical Scheme principal officer, Mark Arnold.

The elderly and young children are particularly susceptible to heat-related health conditions. “The elderly tend to dehydrate more quickly than other healthy adults, while babies and young children’s bodies’ internal thermoregula- tory systems are not yet fully developed. People suffering from chronic lung and heart conditions and those taking certain medicines which may impair heat regulation are particularly heat sensitive.

This puts these age groups and individuals at great risk in the heat”, he explains.

“Hyperthermia is a condition in which the body temperature becomes dangerously high and the body cannot dissipate heat in a hot or humid environment, especially while doing physical activities. We more commonly hear about heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which are both forms of hyperthermia.”

Heat exhaustion is a less severe form of hyperthermia, which can lead to heat stroke if not adequately treated. The health risks associated with high temperatures should not be under- estimated as heat stroke, which happens when the body’s core temperature increases beyond 40 degrees Celsius,

can be fatal.Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:• profuse sweating;• muscle cramps and body aches;• nausea;• vomiting;• fatigue;• dizziness;• pale skin.

“If you or anyone else shows symptoms of heat exhaustion, take action imme- diately. Get out of the heat, drink plenty of water, remove any tight or unnecessary clothing, and take a cool shower or bath to reduce the body temperature. If these measures don’t provide relief within 30 minutes, then the person could be suffering from the more serious condition of heat stroke,” Arnold cautions.

With South Africa’s summer in full swing, temperatures soaring, and some experts predicting a particularly hot and dry summer, we caution you to take measures to protect your health, and that of the elderly and young children.

Veilig reis!

Pasop daar is `n slaggat!

How to play car cricketCar cricket is great to play on long game trips, in the city however; you’ll discover that it doesn’t work so well.

The rules:1. One person at a time comes up to ‘bat’, and they score ‘runs’ when vehicles are sighted.

2.How do you score:• White cars are worth one

run• Coloured cars are worth

two runs• Black cars are worth two

runs. • Caravans are worth four

runs• Trucks are worth six runs• Any vehicle towing any-

thing collects an addition-al run

• And red cars, they get you out.

3. For cars to count as runs they must be moving and traveling in the opposite direction. 4.If you get one hundred runs, you retire5.If you are the first to get one hundred runs, you win. 6.If no one reaches one hun-dred runs, the person with the most runs win.

Fighting over the TV remoteYou and your family sit on the couch, TV right in front of you. Whatever programme was on had been put on sport before you gotten home. Since you were in no way interested in the channel, you grab the remote, which was lying next to your husband on the cushion. “Hey” he whines. “What?” You asked a little annoyed. “It’s not like you were even watching this. You were on your phone this whole time!” “I wasn’t”. He claimed, setting his phone aside. Must I carry on or does this sound familiar?

All though holiday time means fun in the sun, relaxing and chilling, it also means having the TV remote as your biggest enemy. Sports or no sports? BBC Lifestyle VS Comedy Central?

Let’s be honest: There’s something very comforting knowing that this holiday, after a long year of work and going to school, you can sit on your comfy couch and turn on the TV. Everyone loves some quality TV time, but how you watch TV may vary from person to person.

If you nod about all the statements mentioned above, it’s normal. In a recent poll 63% of families participated indicated that they fight over the remote. It’s more than half of them! A newspaper in San Diego even reported on a man being stabbed by his brother following an argument over the TV remote control. A Minneapolis woman decided to drive her point home by stabbing her boyfriend, after a heated argument over who ought to get dibs on the remote control.

Right, so the next time you even think about snatching the remote, think again.

Thankfully, there are some pretty convenient solutions to such pesky television disputes, especially during summer holidays.

Here are seven ways that you can help your family stop fighting over the remote:

1. Get another TV2. Sign up for a TV service which allows for recording3. Assign everyone a different weekday - divide up the days

of the week among your family members. 4. Encourage generosity and sharing5. Keep all sharp objects out of the TV room that could

cause your family to reach the front page of the local newspaper far away!

6. Get out of the house and do something. Read your AWSUM Summer guide for some local fun stuff to do as a family and get out and about!

7. Play board games as a family. This is one of the few times a year when the family isn’t that busy and together as a unit. Dust the board games and get playing!

Happy TV watching!

Tick this list in 2016Sometimes, the smallest of household tasks are overlooked therefore the New Year signifies a fresh start in the home and is the perfect time to check them all off your list.

Here are 10 simple but essential house-keeping chores you might not have remembered to do:1. Rotate your mattress at least once a

year

2. Feather, down and synthetic pillows should be washed once a year to eliminate oils, residue, dead skin and dust that inevitably settle in the pillows and make them sag

3. If you don’t remember changing your toothbrush with in the last six months, change them all

4. Now is a good time to take stock of your inventory and replace, repurpose, or give away any linens that are worn, ripped stained or otherwise unused, collecting dust in the closet.

5. Refresh closet sachets, or make new ones

6. UV rays are an excellent (and green and free) source of disinfectant. You can’t exactly throw a rug into the washer, but you can easily haul it outside, fling it over a railing (or on a clean surface) and give it a few hours in direct sun to air it out and kill any bacteria in the fibres.

7. Rugs placed near windows and doors will eventually fade from the bright, hot rays streaming in (even if it’s indirect light), so it’s important to spin them around 180 degrees (after you air them out, of course!) and ex-pose the other side to sun in even fading.

8. Give your cutting boards a good scrub using our all-natural solution, and then oil them up to ensure they’ll last through the next holiday season.

9. Gather up your unused canned

goods, ill-fitting clothes, outgrown toys, obsolete electronics, and re-cent gifts you have a feeling you’ll never use and drop them off at the appropriate food banks, charities, thrift stores, or electronic recycling centres

10. To be prepared for tax time (and maybe give yourself a little motivation), clean out your receipt drawer to make room for new re-ceipts.
