Summer Field Programme 2011 Each person attending field meetings does so on the understanding that they attend at their own risk. The NSGGA has public liability insurance through a GA insurance policy that also carries limited personal accident cover for members attending meetings or field trips. Non-members pay £2 to cover temporary membership giving them insurance cover. A field fee of £2 per head is normally charged for members and non-members to cover leader’s expenses. In the absence of a field secretary we are running a number of ad-hoc field trips this summer. We hope to have more dates confirmed by the July Bulletin. If you would like to help the NSGGA by becoming the field secretary please contact the chairman, David Osborn. Saturday April 30th at 10:00 Southern Cannock Chase led by Dr Ian Stimpson (Keele University) This trip comprises a gentle 7km (4.5 mile) circular walk across the southeastern part of the Cannock Chase area of outstanding natural beauty. The geology comprises Middle Coal Measures, extensively mined on the eastern flank of the Chase, unconformably overlain by Lower Triassic breccias and conglomerates. Those attending the trip can either bring a packed lunch or avail themselves of a conveniently situated hostelry half way round the walk. Meet at 10am at Stile Cop Car Park SK 0385 1515 – Leaving Rugeley on the A460 towards Hednesford, take the first left after the town and the car park is on the left after 2km (1.5 miles). Field Report : Extreme Gardening IV GeoConservation Staffordshire Site Clearance Day at Sparrowlee Cutting

Saturday 12th March 2011: Leaders: Pat Cossey and Sarah Taylor

After the excitement of the

previous site clearance event

where BBC Countryfile joined

the GeoConservation

Staffordshire (formerly Staffs

RIGS group), March 12th

, saw

a much more restrained

geoconservation day in the

Hamps Valley at Sparrowlee

Cutting.

The site clearance, run by

Patrick Cossey (Staffordshire

University) and Sarah Taylor

(Keele University), and

involving several NSGGA

members, cleared the

biology that was obscuring

the geology at Sparrowlee

Cutting (Stop 28 on the

Hamps and Manifold

Geotrail).

The restored cutting revealed

a small thrust fault (second

image) and a localised pocket

of crinoid debris (third

image) in the Milldale

Limestone that probably

haven’t seen the light of day

since the Manifold Valley

Railway was active in the in

1920s.

The next GeoConservation

Staffordshire site clearance

event will be in November

and new volunteers are

always welcome.
