DAILY REPORT SUMMER COURSE 2014 Practical Agriculture Sciences Toward Regional Sustainability (PARS) for Graduate Students : Integrated Sustainable Farming System (September 18 th 24 th , 2014) Bogor Agricultural University, Ibaraki University, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Ryukyus University, Ehime University, Kagawa University BELLADINI LOVELY GROUP D F351130461 1 Day Chris Novia Dea Aini Putze Dinda Yuki Jun Masato Nina Ida (me) “Saung Sawah” I met all members of Group D for the first time at Landhuis Dormitory. There were 9 students from Bogor Agricultural University, who come from varied faculties namely Faculty of Agriculture (Chris Darmawan, Prabawati Hyunita P and Adinda Nurul Huda M), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (Dea Fauzia Lestari), Faculty of Animal Husbandry (Novia Qomariyah), Faculty of Forestry (Ida Rosita), Faculty of Agricultural Technology (Nur Aini Iswati H and I) and Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (Aminah Balfas). There were also 2 students from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT), who major in Soil Physics (Hiratsuka Masato) and Drainage and Irrigation Technology (Ichikawa Jun). Last but not least was a Ryukyus student who major in Forestry (Tamaki Yuki). We chose Chris as the chief of our group and Masato as the vice–chief. We headed to Saung Sawah together by foot. On the way, we the IPB students started explaining to Japanese friends some buildings we passed through, such as Al-Hurriyah mosque, male TPB Dormitory, campus back gate, several fields alongside, etc. We also did chit-chat each other in order to get known each other better. Because even among us Indonesians, I didn’t know all of them yet before this summer course program. I found that all of them are older than me. Oldest one is Mama Novi (we called them by the nickname Mama because she even got 1 son and 1 daughter); Kak Chris is 27 y.o.; Kak Putze is 26 y.o.; Kak Ida, Kak Dea, Kak Dinda and Masato are 24 y.o.; Kak Nina, Aini and Jun are 23 y.o.; and Yuki is 22 y.o. We Indonesians also came from different races while I am Minangnese, Kak Dinda is Bataknese, Kak Nina is Arabian-Javanese, Kak Chris is Chinese-Javanese, Kak Dea and Kak Ida are Sundanese, and Kak Putze, Aini and Mama Novi are Javanese. Despite I really figured them all so bubbly and playful so that I did expect a very fun week being in this group. Right from the first hours, we already had stocks of laugh altogether. I was so happy right from beginning! We arrived at Saung Sawah, one of paddy field spot on the way to Situ Gede Lake with saung site restaurant surrounded by beautiful and wide paddy view. All groups gathered on one biggest saung there and we were instructed to do some qualitative and quantitative observations today such as soil, water and plant observation and farmer interview, on 4 different spots. After all 4 group’s chiefs gambled by Jan-Ken-Pon, Group D got 4–5 y.o. organic paddy field, whereas others took 1–2 y.o. organic field, 8 y.o. organic field and an anorganic field. When I heard about paddy field observation, I was so much interested and nervous in same time! I have been IPB student for 5 years but I never experienced it even once because I am studying agroindustry that never had any single chance to being off the field ground learning on agriculture cultivation and stuffs. So, I was very pumped! Soil analysis consisted of physical, biological and chemical characterization. First thing to do was taking the soil sample from 5 random points presenting the center, north, south, west and east side of the spot. We plugged the device onto the ground and slammed a hammer to the head until the tip reach deep soil which is 30 cm below the surface. After that we took out the device from the hole and put the carried soil sample on a plastic bag. Top soil was at 0–15 cm of the device pole and the below one, 15–30 cm, was called deep soil so that we got 2 plastic bags of sample. For physical properties, we observed soil suspension which was divided into layers because of different density of each materials. For biological properties, we looked for any macro-organisms lived on that area such as mud snails, frogs, insects, birds and many kind of flowers. Afterward, we also took water sample of the paddy field from its inlet, outlet and center point then put each of them on a small bottle. For plant analysis, we measure leaf greenness by Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) device. After lunch and noon break, we interviewed farmers in milling unit located beside Saung Sawah. We achieved comparison data between organic and non-organic rice. We learnt differences among them in case of productivity, cultivation method, chemical fertilizer usage, nutrition fact, market trend, worker cost and environmental issues. Last activity was chemical characterization of soil sample using Dr. Soil and water sample using spectrophotometer. We were instructed by Mr Bagus and Mr Habib. After finished all tasks, we walked back home to Landhuis together. At that time, I realized many similarities between each of us. I found that Kak Nina’s research and mine are in most-nearly same field, Masato is addicted to One Piece manga as I do, Yuki and I also love same several anime, Kak Dinda speaks Sumatra accent too, Kak Chris is also a war-themed gamer, Kak Ida applied same exchange programs like me, Aini was graduated on the same year as mine, Jun is so kind teaching me Japanese, Kak Dea is most cheerful person among us, Mama Novi is unexpectedly an excellent comedian although roles as a mom of two, and Kak Putze who I already looked as my own sister. They are very lovable and I knew that my days would be fun being with them. SO HAPPY! “Nice to meet you and let’s be friends!” Today couldn’t be happier! First time observing down the field. With new friends.

    2Day Jonggol :

Oil Palm Plantation & Alley Harvesting

    Getting closer.

    Dance altogether, minna!

We gathered at ATM center that morning. With our bags and luggage for 2day and 3 nights, we go in the bus. There were 2 buses and Group D and Bwere in the same bus. Group D became the first completed at that time. While waiting for other groups members, we chit-chatted with each otherand with members of Group B as well. We also took pictures together and itis unarguably melted barriers between us, the awkwardness and shymoment. We are starting to get used with each other. For around 4 hours onthe way, we threw jokes and it made the journey so fun and not boring atall. Japanese or Indonesian jokes were okay and fully acceptable, at least welaugh together!

Our bus stopped at house that has Wisma Tamu written on its front yard. There were 2 houses, for girls and boys. In girl house, Group D andA got bigger room each because we had 8 girls, much more than B and C (6 girls each). We were allowed to rest for a while and took lunch aswell. After that, we went again by our bus back to oil palm plantation. At that time, we were informed that this plantation is organized hand byhand too with Cargill Co., one of biggest American company located in Indonesia as far as I knew. The total area of plantation wasapproximately 50 ha and it was just cultivated 2 years ago. We also learnt about some history, issues rumors and facts of oil palm by Mr.Faiz.And the end we learnt about how to identify age of an oil palm tree. I found this is quite interesting because for years live d surrounded bythese trees I didnt know how to know its age at all. At that time I realized something when looking at my Japanese group-mates. They lookedconfused and startled right from the beginning we came here. They looked hesitate but amazed at the same time to touch the fruit, flower, branch and leaf of those oil palm trees. When I ask them whats wrong, three of them answered at the same excited tone and funny mind-blownface, Spikey branches and leaves, oily fruit, huge flowers, expensive price. This is a weird plant!. I laughed and told them, Oil palm isIndonesian resource of poverty right now, mostly of us depend on this weird plant. They were once again amazed.

We went back to Wisma Tamu for an hour for attending presentation about overview and details of Jonggol animal husbandry and oil palmplantation, even a video about observations done previously by IPB students. Then another trip of today was observation to alley croppingarea with a vehicle I had been waited for a long time to try on TRACTOR! On alley cropping area, we learnt about grazing phenomenon.Unfortunately we couldnt explore much more because the day was getting off. So we were sent back to Wisma Tamu followed by beautiful redsunset behind us.

Oil palm is weird! and Tractor Riding

We arrived at Jonggol around 11 a.m. It was my very first time being there, even havent heard about that name before. It was said that Jonggol islocated near Mekarsari but what I found it was not that near! We camethrough many small roads and finally we came in to the Jonggol front gate.First thing I saw is view of oil palms plantation. How nostalgic It broughtme to my childhood when I was lived in Pelalawan, Riau, oil palm treeswas my every-day buddy since I was born until my dad transferred to thecapital city of Pekanbaru when I was in 5 grade. But the trees were still toosmall here.

At night, we ate barbeque for dinner. After that we gathered at girls house to attend opening ceremony byMr.Nachrowi, secretary of IPB graduate school, to welcome us and officially open this year summer courseprogram. Then we watched group singing and dancing performances. Masato and other Japanese dancedAKB48 and Yuki and other Ryukyus guys did YaIyaIyaLah comedian dances, while Jun sang Doraemon. There were so funny and happy shows that we couldnt stop clapping our hands! What a night!

    3Day Jonggol :

    Buffalo

    Field

Buffalo and our very first picnic

    Silly but funny fail

    Play together, work together

We leaved Wisma Tamu at 8 a.m. Everyone needed to be on timeand shouldnt be late because this morning we have to observeanimals which are perfectly, naturally on-time creatures. Eachgroup had to arrive at animal pasture or field before they came outfrom the cage to grazing area. Yesterday we won second place atJan-Ken-Pon when chosing which animal we would like to observetoday. And we picked buffalo. We thought buffalos would be easieras they are slow mammal, we were sure it would be fine But wedidnt know tough reality behind that silly but funny decision.

We were instructed to be super quiet while observing buffalo behavior or else theywould escape. We were divided into 2 people per team and each had to choose onespecific buffalo to be observed for next 2 h. I went with Yuki, he acted as timer whilemyself as data writer and we picked the most black one as our buffalo. But thingswere not going as expected It was only 10 minutes before the buffalo realized ourexistence. Every time we took a step, they ran like a flash and disappeared. We hadfollowed them quietly around that huge area but they kept running away. We weregetting frustrated when we found that buffalos had completely gone to somewherewe couldnt chase at. But silver-lining of all these fails was I got chance to get closerand closer to each member. When we knew that was already fail observation, we satdown on grass, sat in a circle and shared laughs, jokes and teases each other afterexperiencing hide and seek with those shy buffalos. We did talk about gossips tooand our picnic-like afternoon went quite well because everyone seemed happierand closer to each other. On that day, we admitted that buffalo taught us hardshipstrengthen our friendship., very much

After a tough observation at buffalo pasture area, we went back to Wisma Tamu and weanalysis the samples taken there, like soil sample and carrying capacity sample. At night, after dinner, we were taught by Mrs. Windi how to calculate carrying capacity and it wascomplex measurement, though. After that our group started working on grouppresentation preparation. We divided tasks for different peoples and made a job-desklists. There were ones whose job was looking for literature/reference, some wereselecting documentations, some were transforming raw data to graphs, charts or tables, and others who created the presentation slide. That afternoon I learnt SO MANY thingsfrom Masato, Jun and Yuki about presentation tips and tricks especially how to set agraph in the most clear way and emphasize the slides. I never really realized thosesimplicity before so I was so thankful taught by them! At this situation I suddenly realizedthat whole members in my group were bright in their own way and what made me feel soblessed was the fact that each one of them was reliable. I appreciate Masato so muchbecause of his leadership skill, he was deserved being the vice-captain. No-one beingpicky and we worked together. It made me feel assured that my group would be solid andstrongly-promising at the presentation day.

Our group got specialty this morning because we got our own personal tractor and driver to take us to buffalo pasture area, which was much further than other groups areas. After a long way through wide hill ground and roads with big stones and deep bushes, we stopped behind a big tree at center of the field.

    4Day TMII

Indonesias beauty and trip full of LOL!

    Food, Smile and Love

Rice, Honey, Tea, Indomie and Beer?

Today was the last day of us being in Jonggol. Weleaved right after breakfast around 9 a.m. by busto Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII). Todaysagenda? Botani Square after TMII, and yes, todayis full of fun trip! A real full-day vacation, finally!

We arrived at TMII around 11 a.m. Our bus wentaround the TMII once to show completely allbuildings and houses here. After the bus parked,we were instructed that we had free time until 2p.m. This was the first time for Masato, Jun andYuki being here so we decided to take them tolook around TMII from the sky by cable car atfirst. Because we thought that wouldnt beenough time if we took them to each traditionalhouses here which are a bunch. After we boughtthe ticket, we queued on very long line whiletaking many photos together. By deeper chit-chatand warmer laughs between each other, onceagain we all were getting closer.

We leaved TMII and headed to Botani Square. We took Japanese mates toSerambi Botani and they bought souvenirs there. Masato got honey andJun got rice. When we asked him whether he bought the rice forlaboratory sample at campus, he answered innocently Not forexperiment, it is for me, to EAT!. We then burst and LOL hard because ofJuns extreme appetite confession. Yuki was weirder. He told me hewasnt interested in anything but tea. Because he refused to buy tea at SB,I took him to Giant instead. Finally he found what he want, he bought 10packs varied from cheap and local brand to royal brand of tea. But itdidnt finished yet, when we passed instant noodle rack, he becameshocked and ran getting more basket and yelled to me Give merecommendation which one taste good, Dini!. And unbelievably he tookaround 15 packs of Indomie. After I thought that he was already satisfied,he proved me wrong. Suddenly, Jun called us to beer rack.

and ice longan juice, to satisfy their curiosity. We got shocking moment when we finally knew that Jun and Yuki had hugestomach capacity. They could eat up to 3 menus at once, without delaying or stuff, but they ended like fainting. We found that reallyfunny and laughed for hours if we reminded about that food coma incident. These lovable moments turned us from friends tofamily. There was almost no barrier between us starting that day.

At afternoon, before lunch, we went to coconut water stall beside the cable car station. It wasbecause on first day on the way home from Saung Sawah, Yuki once said that he was veryanxious of coconut water taste. Thankfully, all our Japanese guys liked it, they even ate the meatsuntil it was nothing left inside the coconut!

We chose roasted duck as our lunch. At that time we figured out that Jun and Yuki were very curious of Indonesian cuisines. We ordered varied menu, such as mieayam, bakso, different kinds of grilled duck

All of Japanese friends gathered there instantly and, yes, they bought 3-6 bottles of Bir Bintang each person! Including Yuki andJun! After that epic shopping, we headed to Sagoo for dinner. Once again we ordered traditional and typical Indonesian foods forour food-lover Japanese. We got rujak, mie goreng, mie Jawa, kwe tiaw, ifu mie and nasi goreng. We shared our food to all of usand this night made me seeing them like my own real family already.

    Day IPB : Directorate

    Bld.

    Show time.

    Highfive!

    Warm Dinner and Warm Friendship

Night after our individual presentation, we decided to go dinner together, and we took Chiaki over too. We chosen Mie Aceh cuisineand we started to being more risky for their foods selection because we saw that all of our Japanese guys were getting used to spicytaste in Indonesian foods.I also wanted them to try Mie Aceh the best cuisine that contains most spices ever and, in my opinion, that ismost delicious ever. We also bought satay, martabak telor and sop durian for them tasting. Jun and Yuki once again amazed us bytheir ultra eating skill, they ate 3 plates of Mie Aceh each and still finished their satay and martabak happily. But what we most waitedwas their reaction to sop durian tasting. Reaction were expectedly not good, they couldnt even ate small spoon of that durian. Masatomumbled, Mysterious fruit.. Jun responded with forced-smile, No I am not okay eating this Everything is okay, but this? No..Chiaki threw up the durian and whispered, Noooo and Yuki was like Thanks, but no. I prefer satay.

It finally came to our group members presentation. Kak Chris already chose randomly who would comefirst, the second, so on until the last presenter. I got no.5 and honestly I was freaking-nervous at thattime, my hands even sweated. I was impressed by Kak Putze, Aini and Masato how could they be soprepared and confident. Jun was surprisingly super-calm even tough he got the first place to present.

After 4 days of fun times outside the campus, starting from today all agendas wouldbe held in IPB area. At 7 a.m., some of us went to Landhuis to pick and accompanyJapanese friends to directorate building. Before lectures started at 8 a.m., all SummerCourse participants had to patch every individual posters on walls that had beenprepared by committees with poster number. in each wall. After deciding by Jan-Ken-Pon, Group B members became the first group at afternoon to present after lectures.Right after that, we, Group D members, would hold the second panel. And remainedgroups, A and C would present tomorrow then.

There were 5 lecturers this morning. First was about Organic Paddy byMr.Sugiyanto. Second was about Oil Palm Plantation by Mr.Sudrajat. Third wasabout Agro-sociology by Mr.Suryo Adi Wibowo. And last but definitely not least, after coffee break, there was lecture about Food & Product Processing byMr.Purwiyatno H. Mr.Wibowo and Mr Purwiyatnos topic were the mostinteresting in my opinion because they explained much about my field of study soI could understand easier and better.

When I asked Yuki why Jun could be that calm, Yuki had no idea because he was also nervously trembled like I was. Jun after his showtold me his trick, Just pretend that nobody hear you!. And it came to my turn. This was my very first time presenting my researchreport in English, in a formal international program. The 7 minutes went fast and I didnt make it on time. I tried to fix it by beingconfident answering questions from audiences. There was Kak Moji asking and I thought I nailed that. My heart pumped so hard after Ifinished my time over and I went back to my seat looked my head down because of nervous pumps. Unexpectedly, Yuki and Mama Noviwhispered High five! Good job, good job!. That really made me calm and cleared my blurred sight previously. I knew perfectly thatmine was so far to be considered as a perfect presentation, but at least I did it the best way I could do right now. I did it, YEAY!

    6Day

Jaka Tarub and our precious strongbond.

    Unexpectedly Successful Drama

    Night of Hard Struggle

Mama Novias hard struggle and undyingly spirit lead us making crazy thought about just doing this drama. Afterone short discussion, we decided to DO the drama performing. We opened bag Mama Novi brought from herhome, there were full and complete properties from her childrens toys, such as scarves and clothes for the 7princesses and Princess Dewi Nawang Wulan, toy gun for Jaka Tarub and his friend Jaka Tole as forest birdhunterand even a baby-girl doll for Jaka Tarub and Princess Dewis fake child. Kak Chris brought over his guitar as welland then we were finally prepared and ready to go to script discussion and acting practice.

Adjusted to script that has been created and translated by Mama Novi and Aini, we divided the roles in this drama:Jun as Jaka Tarub, Masato as Jaka Tole (Jaka Tarubs hunter friend), Yuki as Princess Dewi Nawang Wulan, KakDinda, Kak Dea, Kak Nina, Kak Ida, Aini and Kak Putze as The 7 Princesses (Princess Dewis sister). Forbackground music, Kak Chris played as guitarist and Mama Novi as singer, while myself played as narrator andconversation dubber. Our group once again got the second turn and finally it came to our turn. We performed ourdrama well and we saw audiences laughed and entertained. Surprisingly, Jun and Yuki acted PERFECTLY well! Wereally didnt expect that! Masato was little disappointed, though, I want better role! I want to act longer too!.That was very fun night and we perform to entertain others as a group, and we succeeded I love them more! Ifeel the much much much stronger-bond of our friendship after this night.

After drama performance night, we leaved directorate building in campus to Kak Ninas house at Sindang Barang. We decided to sleep over there so that we would had much time to discuss and finished our group presentationslides. We worked until 3 a.m. and the discussion went so intense. Masato once again proved that we were notwrong chosen him as vice-captain, he managed and divided our tasks in rational amount of minutes for eachperson. Kak Chris as the captain managed all slides and compiled them all. It was toughest night over all oursummer course days.

Same like yesterday, at 7 a.m., we picked our Japanese friends mates from Landhuis to Directoratebuilding. Today there would be other lectures but this time presented by Japanese professors. There

were 4 lecturers this morning. First was by Kazuhito Sakai sensei about Water and Gas EmissionModeling. Second was by Takeshi Ohkubo sensei about Animal Science, Chicken Broodiness. Thirdwas by Sakagami sensei about Soil Science and Microbiology. After coffee break, there was anotherlecturer by Mr. Faiz Syuaib about Sustainability. I was very interested in Sakai senseis presentationbecause I learnt about modeling too since I was undergraduate student and Mr.Faizs presentationwas most amusing because beside I could learn from my field perception, there were also manyblends to other several fields so it enriched my knowledge with a much wider-perception and way ofthinking.

It was instructed from the beginning that on 6th night, there would be cultural festival presented byeach group. But honestly, all of us prioritized the group presentation on 7th morning more importantso we didnt prepare anything, at all. We planned to just give a spontaneous singing show. But therewas one person who still in fire preparing for our group show this night, Mama Novi. She suggestedus a to perform Jaka Tarub drama. She even wrote the script, begged Aini to translate it to English, and even brought some properties for the drama from her house. Over all her sacrifices, but we stillthought that was impossible to do that in such a short time left...

    Tears

    Best Group EVER!

    If u cry, I cry

We are family and cant be separated.

Today was last day of summer course. Juns flight toJapan would be in next 3 days while Yuki still had 2weeks here. But today was our last day for us beingwith Masato because his flight was tonight. We allexactly felt the empty-inside about Masato soon-leaving but this morning we had to perform our grouppresentation at first. Another Jan-Ken-Pon and yet wegot the 2nd turn again. We had practiced for manytimes of presentation and it was thanks to Kak Chrisand Masato who kept coaching our time-management,we were confident we could make it and finished thepresentation on-time.

Our group turn finally came. We presented just likethe way we did at previous practices together.Everything went well and we finished on-time. Evenall questions given to us had been answered by wholegroup members agreement because we had discussevery possible questions at previous practice too. When the time ended, we smiled to each other, high-fived and felt relieved. Our duty had been DONE!

After all groups had presented their result, we took lunch together. We also took bunch of pictures, becausetoday we wore uniform, a t-shirt specially made for us, Group D. It made us looked more like a family, cutesisters and brothers with a role of mother and also a father. I found us cutest today, also with brightestsmile ever. I felt so happy Around 1 p.m., all participants and committees were gathered to attendfarewell ceremony, announcement for the best group, the best poster, the best oral presenter andcertificate giving. All of us Group D members sat near each other, except Yuki who sat beside his Ryukyusbrothers, Kak Nina who sat behind his aunt and Masato. After giving farewell ceremony speech, Mr.Faizasked to all of us whether is anyone wanted to say something for this last day. Noone raised hand butunexpectedly Masato did. He took the mic and told many memorable impressions he got within this weekseriously and we heard him in same serious way. but suddenly he lowered his voice tone while said,Because of this summer course program, I get new friendship, family, and then stopped talking. Histears fell down... Masato was crying. I, spontaneously, cried my eyes out. I actually had resist these tears butwhen I saw that perfectionist, gentle guy like Masato cried, I couldnt hold to not cry because I dont wantus separated. When I look around, I found all of them, my family of Group D, cried. Even Jun the mostmacho one also showed his tears and Kak Chris our strong papa had to look on other corner to hold on his

As expected, Aini got second runner-up at poster, Kak Putze got first runner-up at oral presenter and Group D got THE BEST GROUP!

watery eyes. Kak Dea whined and she looked very sad. All of us looked the same way. They are truly my sisters and brothers, my family We hugged each others then. This is a really magical summer course Only a week but it seemed like years had been knowing each other. It sounded and looked so exaggerating, right? But these tears wouldnt lie. It wasnt a lie when there was someone who said sincerely to you in his tears, We are family. If u cry, Id cry.
