Camp Descriptions

Adventures Await through Fiction StoriesJune 22–26 | Grades 3 & 4 | PMLove being creative and making up stories?During this week, campers will listen to and readvarious short fictional texts to help them create afictional story. Campers will first learn aboutdifferent story elements in order to generate anddevelop their own unique and exciting storywhich they will then publish digitally. Afrofuturism and Oral StorytellingJune 15–19 | Grades 9–12 | PMIn this camp, participants will travel to the futureand learn about Afrofuturism and its growingpower as a social justice movement. While doingthis, participants will read, critique, and analyzetexts as they develop their own multi-modalstory. We will share our work on the final day andrecognize each other as storytellers! Building and Constructing MathJune 15–19 | Grades 9–12 | AM & PMJune 22–24 | Grades 7 & 8 | AM & PMMathematics is around us daily, whether we useit or not. In this camp, participants will be lookingat the construction of this world through the lensof mathematics. They will get an opportunity touse everyday objects to build models of their ownto better understand how mathematics is appliedin the real world. Flash FictionJune 15–19 | Grades 7 & 8 AM | Grades 5–8 PMWriting a story can be a daunting task! There’s somuch to do, so much to say, so much to describe, andnot everyone has the time or energy to write a 300-page novel! In Flash Fiction, we work to developstories that are bite-sized, but also pack a punch.Develop authentic characters and dream up excitingconflict in a camp that will challenge you to write in aflash!

Graphic Novels Are Real Books!June 15–19 | Grades 5–8 | AMDo you read and LOVE graphic novels? Are youinterested in writing your own? In this workshop,participants will read and study the art of emergingAmerican graphic novelists. And like the best graphicnovelists in America (think Raina Telgemeier!), eachparticipant will storyboard and write a graphic novelbased on their own lives. Artists of ALL abilities arewelcome! Harry Potter FanFictionJune 15–19 | Grades 5 & 6 | AM & PMPotter fans, unite! In this camp, we will explore thegenre of writing fanfiction, or using an author or bookwe admire to write our own stories that keep to thespirit of the original. We will have the chance to becreative, let our imaginations soar, and write in a waythat we sometimes don’t get a chance to do during theschool year. So, if you’ve ever wanted to know whatProfessor McGonagall’s childhood was like, or whatit’s like to be a house-elf, or what happens to theWeasley twins when they open their own shop, sign upfor this camp—we’ll write those stories ourselves! Poetic JusticeJune 15–19 | Grades 9–12 | AMJune 22–24 | Grades 5–8 | AM & PMIn this camp, scholars will look at forms of historicaloppression and ways of resistance. This will lead to adiscussion and exploration of social justice. In the end,scholars will research their own passion of resistanceand create a spoken word piece on a topic of socialjustice they are passionate about. Scholars areencouraged to share their spoken word piece on thelast day of camp. Power in FairytalesJune 22–26 | Grades 3 & 4 | AMIn this camp, we will read fairy tales and take extratime to think about the lessons they want to teach us.We will think about who has power in each story, whythey have this power, and what would happen if thepower was given to another character. We will read,discuss, and rewrite fairy tales to further ourunderstanding of the valuable lessons within them.

Rise Up & WriteJune 22–26 | Grades 9–12 | Full DayJuly 20–24 | Grades 9–12 | Full DayWelcome to Rise Up & Write, an advocacy writingsummer camp for high school students.  Rise Up &Write provides youth with the opportunity to usewriting as a way to raise awareness and createchange. Super StoriesJune 22–26 | Grades 5 & 6 | AMHave you ever wanted to create a superhero story? Inthis workshop, participants will get to explore heroesand villains living in imaginary worlds and our ownbackyard. We will learn about character developmentand descriptive language to move stories from zero tohero. The workshop will culminate with participantscreating and sharing their own superhero story. Superheroes Unite!June 22–26 | Grades 1 & 2 | AMSuperheroes Unite! What do superheroes do best? Thisweek, campers will discover different kinds ofsuperheroes through texts and clips.  We will belearning different elements that make a story great,and each camper will create their own superhero storyto share. Tell Your Story through Graphic NovelsJune 22–26 | Grades 5 & 6 | PMIn this camp, we will explore the world of graphicnovels. We’ll look at storytelling in graphic novels,where both pictures and words are used to tell a story.After we learn about these storytelling strategies, we’llwork on telling our own life stories through graphicnovels. Young People Destroy Science Fiction & FantasyJunes 15–19 | Grades 7 & 8 | PMInterested in reading and writing science fiction andfantasy (SFF)? With tips from local and internationalauthors, start world-building and writing SFF like thepros in this workshop. Each participant will build theirown world with its own rules and write a short story(with optional artwork) that takes place in that world.Dragons, cyborgs, and magicians of all skill levelsneeded!
