If you feel like another school year is careening to an end, you’re not alone! Kids (and teachers) are well into

the countdown already, even as the first signs of spring peek through persistent patches of snow. Flip-flops, tank tops, and sun are on everyone’s mind after the long winter, and you’ve probably already thought up a few summertime adven-tures you’d like to partake in yourself.

Your first week or two of summer break will be blissfully spent mak-ing up for lost time with your babies,

who’ve been busy with homework and after-school activities all school-year long. But all good things must come to an end. Before long you’ll find yourself living off saltines in a dust-ridden house, aching for the chance to shop, clean, and maybe even make a living, minus an en-ergetic kid or three begging you to en-tertain them. “Mommy I’m BORED!!!”

Enter summer camps; exhauster of children, savior of parents. It doesn’t matter what your kiddo likes to do, there’s a camp for it! Whether he’s a

budding artist, a future pro-athlete, or a book worm, you’ll find just the ticket to fill up his days with excitement, adven-ture, and learning while you get back to that nagging list of chores you put on hiatus pre-summer break.

You’ll want to start planning ear-ly, as your fellow parents will surely stumble upon the same idea before long. Lucky for you there’s a whole directory right here at your finger-tips to give you the edge over the competition. So what’re you waiting for? Check out the guide below for a snapshot of what’s available for 2016, then flip through our comprehensive directory for a full listing of camps in your area. Grab the phone and start dialing—the kids will be home before you know it!

ARTSY CAMPSSinging, dancing, theater and painting! We have it all right here in northern Colorado, and your little one can spend a day, a week, or the summer honing their skills at a camp for the arts. Kids ages 7 to 13 are invited to participate in the 2016 Kids Do It All: Summer Music-Theatre Camp at CSU (www.theatre.colostate.edu/about/summer-camp/), during which they’ll have the opportunity to learn and practice the entire theater pro-cess, from playwriting to performing, during each week-long session. Sto-rybook Camp and Broadway Stars are just a couple of the camps that 3- to 12-year-old dancers can take part in at Canyon Concert Ballet in Fort Collins (www.ccballet.org/summer-course/camps/). Kids will explore dance across multiple genres, with a little singing and crafting mixed in, during these week-long camps.

CAMPS FOR ATHLETES-IN-TRAININGYour budding athlete will gain valuable experience in his favorite sport this summer, by attending one of the many sports camps nearby. UNC in Greeley (www.uncbears.com/sports/2014/10/13/GEN_1013143153.aspx) offers a variety of youth sports camps, including soccer, baseball, softball, wrestling, volleyball, football and basketball throughout the summer. Age requirements vary so be sure to check online for details. The

Edge Sports Center in Fort Collins (www.edgesportscenter.com/youth-summer-camps/) also offers several sports camps for preschool-agers and up, including multi-sports camps for those who are undecided.

CAMPS FOR LITTLE LEARNERSIf your child has a thirst for knowl-edge, you might consider a camp that provides education in a fun, hands-on way. The Fort Collins Museum of

Discovery (www.fcmod.org/learning- programs/summer-programs/) offers camps with focuses on science, space, archaeology, the wild west, and di-nosaurs. Camps are each a week long and take place throughout the sum-mer. Rivendell School in Fort Collins (www.rivendell-school.org/programs/summer-camps/) will offer its annual selection of summer camps, with sub-jects such as photography, ecology and literature for school-agers.

CAMPS FOR ANIMAL AND NATURE LOVERSGet your 7- to 12-year-old outdoors this summer with a week-long camp at the CSU Environmental Learning Center (www.csuelc.org/programs/youth-and-family/). Camps focus on topics such as wildlife, gardening, art in nature, river ecosystems, and outdoor science detective work. The Gardens on Spring Creek in Fort Collins (www.fcgov.com/gardens/home) also offers an array of hands-on gardening summer camps for 5- to 11-year-olds. Critter Camp, offered by Larimer Humane Society (www.larimer humane.org/education/critter-camp) is an opportunity for 8- to 13-year-olds to gain hands-on experience in proper care of ani-mals in a small-group setting.

A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING...If your child does best in a structured environment, where routine is key, then a summer-long day camp might be a great fit. Working parents might also want to consider a day camp, which pro-vides a wide range of field trips and in-camp activities while parents are away at work. Adventure Bound Day Camp is located at the Chilson Center in Love-land (www.cityofloveland.org/index.aspx?page=689.). This licensed summer camp offers weekly field trips around town, as well as activities such as crafts, games and swimming at the Chilson Center. Camp themes vary by week to provide a new adventure each session your child attends. Young People’s Learning Center in Fort Collins (www.youngpeopleslc.com/camps/) offers day camps for all age groups, with a mul-titude of daily field trips and activities, including frequent visits to local parks. Day camp programming is available throughout the entire summer.

Sleeping bag? Check. Hiking boots? Check. Safety guidelines? A must! While the preparations for a family

camping or hiking trip usually include a review of the necessary gear, parents should also review safety guidelines with their children, paying special attention to potential hazards specific to camping, hik-ing, outdoor recreation, water and falls.

Going camping or hiking can be wonderful activities for parents to do with their children, but it is essential to remem-ber key safety guidelines as you’ll be leav-ing the daily environment your kids are used to. A campfire is a serious responsi-bility because it’s the only situation where a family is purposely starting a fire out-doors and a long way from a pressurized water supply or the nearest fire engine.

Campfires, portable stoves, heaters and fuel-burning lanterns—in addition to the danger of starting an uncontrolled brush fire—all produce carbon monox-ide (CO), a colorless and odorless gas that can poison a child very quickly. About 30 campers each year die of CO poisoning. If someone near a campfire or portable stove seems drowsy, disoriented or sick, move that person away from the fire immediately to get some fresh air.

Safe Kids Larimer County recom-mends these safety guidelines around campfires and portable heating devices:

• Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.

• Never use matches, lighters, candles or any device powered by kerosene, propane or other heating fuel inside a tent or camper.

• Always actively supervise children near a campfire or portable stove. Follow posted rules about camp-fires, and do not light fires in windy or excessively dry conditions.

• Keep a bucket of water and a shovel near the fire at all times. Extin-guish the fire completely before go-ing to sleep or leaving the site.

Also keep these guidelines in mind while camping and hiking:

• Keep first aid supplies and emer-gency phone numbers handy, and know where the nearest phone is located. Cell phones might not work in remote areas.

• Let friends and relatives know where you are going and when you are coming home.

• Never let children hike alone.• Dress children in layers of clothing

to help prevent heat-related illness and hypothermia. A child’s body temperature changes faster than an adult’s.

• Do not push kids to go on a longer or more strenuous hike than they can handle. Exhausted children are more likely to fall, wander off or otherwise get injured.

• Bring plenty of drinking water or sports drinks and high-energy snacks.

• Kids should wear hiking boots and

clothing that offers protection from scrapes, bites and poisonous plants. Following the manufacturer’s in-structions, apply insect repellent to a child’s clothing and exposed skin.

• Always supervise young children near water and insist your children wear personal flotation devices when out on boats, near open bodies of water or participating in water sports.

• Apply sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher to your child’s exposed skin 15 to 30 minutes before going out, and reapply frequently. It is possible to get sunburn in cloudy conditions. For more information on outdoor rec-reation safety, visit www.safekids.org.

Safe Kids Larimer County works to prevent unintentional childhood in-jury, the leading cause of death and disability to children ages 1 to 14.

Be safe in the great outdoorsCampfires, hypothermia, dehydration, poisonous plants and bugs…

OFF THE HOOK ARTS By Kate Forgach

PA I D A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Children who study music from an early age can do better at a range of sub-jects such as math, science, arts and language, and they also learn that there are rewards from hard work, practice, and discipline.

Novice and more experienced young musicians between the ages of 5 and 18 will reap these benefits during the annual Off the Hook Arts SummerFest Music Academy which will take place in Fort Collins from June 28th to July 2nd, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“For the fifth year in a row we will offer a fun and educational way for kids to learn more about themselves and the arts,” said Jephta Bernstein, Off the Hook’s Executive and Artistic Director. “Our affordable five-day summer music and arts camps provides enriching musical experiences with outstanding instructors devoted to keeping students musically nourished and inspired.”

The Academy is offered in two Divisions - One for children who currently play vio-lin or viola, and one for children who may be experiencing their first introduction to instrumental music. Daily schedules in-clude diverse exposure to relevant areas

of the arts that stimulate and encourage creative thought and growth. The String Players Division welcomes students ages 8 to 18 and offers begin-ning, intermediate and advanced-level Musical Repertoire classes focusing on solo and chamber music for violin and viola. This program addresses technique and musicality via the Suzuki method while working on World and traditional music. Daily schedules include large-en-semble, theater, fiddle, and improvisation and composition classes.

The Music Explorers Division is for children ages 5 to 10 years of age. This Dalcroze-based program provides a dynamic and fun-filled arts introduction.

Music Explorers is perfect for children that don’t already play or have just begun playing an instrument,” said Bernstein. “It’s a great way for them to fully explore and discover their creative self through movement, music, theatre and art.”

Faculty members will include Justin Lader, a Eugene, Oregon-based instructor of violin/viola and traditional Suzuki method. Justin will be joined by additional instruc-tors who come to us from Integral Steps, a Dalcroze-based Boulder non-profit.

The Dalcroze Method, also known as Dalcroze Eurhythmics, uses movement to teach concepts of structure, rhythm and musical expression. It focuses on allowing

a student to gain physical awareness and experience of music through training that takes place through all of the senses, particularly kinesthetic.

In addition to the week-long Academy program, Off The Hook Arts is delighted to offer a variety of additional programming of interest to young people this summer including our three day STE(A)M² Work-shops and Design Faire, a program which will combine STEM and the Arts in a series of storytelling, music and science-design oriented afternoons; Improve your Improv; and Guitar Aerobics with Eliot Fisk.

Live music is also part of the summer fun with a musical storybook, Adventures of Julian and two Family Concerts, My What Big Ears You Have and Leave it to Ludwig!, hosted by Bruce Adolphe, the Di-rector of Family Concerts at The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in NYC. Their sophisticated and entertaining humor will make the whole family laugh and bring them one step closer to understanding the maestros of the classical music world.

The SummerFest Music Academy will take place at Ridgeview Classical Char-ter School in Fort Collins. Tuition is $260 for the week. Scholarships are available.

For more information, visit offthe-hookarts.org/oth-music-school, email [email protected] or call 970.305.2261.

Many of today’s children primarily interact with music by listening to their favorite tunes, but much recent research suggests that studying music and playing a musical instru-ment from a young age offers substantial benefits academically and socially.
