In the Holy Name of Jesus Christ, Welcome to Saint Thomas’ Church!

We are a lively, active community of faith. We strive to be a loving congregation, committed to welcoming ALL and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our Church building is a beautiful and distinguished historic site. We invite you to read more about us. There is information on our Literature Table at the back of the Church and on our website. We are happy that you are here with us today! Please learn more about our worship from the notes below.

ABOUT THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH and OUR WORSHIP The Episcopal Church, USA, is the American branch of the 85-million member

worldwide Anglican Communion – those Churches born out of The Church of England. Of the world’s 2.2 billion Christians, we are the third largest body.

In our worship, there is strong emphasis upon congregational participation. The Clergy and the congregation together conduct our services. Worshippers are involved participants, not mere spectators. Please use The Book of Common Prayer (red), this Service Program and The Hymnal (blue) to worship God with joy and enthusiasm! Join in the responses, sing along on the Hymns. Hymn numbers preceded by ‘S’ are Service Music in the front of The Hymnal. Share with us in praising and thanking our loving God for all His blessings!

Holy Communion is open to ALL Baptized persons, regardless of Church affiliation. Our Ushers will guide you forward at the appointed time. You may kneel or stand for Communion. Read more about this in the Communion section of this Service Booklet.

Our 10:A.M. service and many of our special services are live streamed on Facebook, then archived for later viewing. Note that you may be on camera at some point!

Sunday School & Adult Classes meet right after our 10:A.M. service. Children’s Church, a service for Pre-School – Grade 3, is offered in our Children’s Chapel (downstairs) during the 10:A.M. service. Children exit at the Sequence (Gospel) Hymn, then re-join us at the Peace!

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS – “Glory to God” – Hymnal *S-280 Setting: Robert Powell

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray.

The Collect of the Day (LAST Epiphany) O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Old Testament Lesson: Exodus 24:12-18

A Reading from the Book of the Exodus. The LORD said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, “Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.” Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses

out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Psalter: Psalm 99 – CHANTED by the CHOIR – Lector & People are SEATED.

1 The LORD is King; let the people tremble; * he is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth shake. 2 The LORD is great in Zion; * he is high above all peoples. 3 Let them confess his Name, which is great and awesome; * he is the Holy One. 4 “O mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; * you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.” 5 Proclaim the greatness of the LORD our God and fall down before his footstool; * he is the Holy One. 6 Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his Name, * they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. 7 He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; * they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them. 8 O LORD our God, you answered them indeed; * you were a God who forgave them, yet punished them for their evil deeds. 9 Proclaim the greatness of the LORD our God and worship him upon his holy hill; * for the LORD our God is the Holy One.

The Epistle: II Saint Peter 1:16-21

A Reading from the Second Letter of Saint Peter. We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the

Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

ix days after Peter had acknowledged Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was

transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down

Hosanna in the highest.

The People kneel and the Celebrant continues

e give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your

Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION – Hymnal *S-138 Setting: McNeil Robinson

We remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory.

The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the ever-Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint Thomas, Saint Mark, Saint Andrew, Saint John, Saint Peter, Saint Patrick and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory are yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

PARISH NEWS for LAST EPIPHANY/Annual Meeting – February 23, 2020

OUR 185th ANNUAL PARISH MEETING & LUNCHEON take place today in conjunction with the 10:A.M. Eucharist, as specified in our By-Laws. Fr. Weatherholt will offer his Annual Report/Address as Rector during the Sermon time and at the start of the meeting. He will make some special announcements.

The Annual Report will be distributed in the Parish Hall. Read our story! Take time to review the leadership reports, Parish statistics and financial statement, all of which tell the story of our Parish’s work for Christ over the past year! For those not at the meeting, copies will be in Church next Sunday. Very special thanks to Office Assistant Pam Mann for working so very hard with Fr. Allan to produce the booklet! And another big thank-you to Pam, who put together today’s very nice Picture Presentation, giving us a “Year in Review”! Enjoy these pictures, which will run continuously during the Meeting and Luncheon.

Of primary importance on today’s meeting agenda is the election of three new Vestrymembers to serve until 2023. We are pleased to submit for your consideration: Linda McCarty, Linda Mellott and Tim Smith. Additional nominations are permissible from the floor. We warmly thank these 3 persons for their willingness to stand for election and, if elected, to serve our Lord and His Church in this important way.

Also today: presentation of the 2020 Rector’s Award. We conclude with a delicious Luncheon. Great thanks go to Linda Mellott and her helpers! Be part of this very important day!

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES MEET AS USUAL TODAY while adults attend the Annual Meeting. Teachers and students will join us at Noon when their classes conclude.

TODAY IS ‘THE SUNDAY OF THE LAST ALLELUIAS UNTIL EASTER’ – We say “farewell” to the use of “Alleluia” – Hebrew for “Praise the Lord” – and most other festivity, such as Altar Flowers, Banners, Gospel Processions, etc. Like treasured ornaments or decorations used at holiday time, many of these joyous reminders are “put away” or “veiled” for the somber weeks of Lent. They will return in great splendor on Easter!

IT’S NOT TOO EARLY TO CONSIDER CONFIRMATION THIS YEAR, when Bishop Sutton makes his Parish Visitation to us on Sunday, June 7. The act of Confirming one’s faith in Jesus is such an important part of the Christian journey for everyone. At the upcoming Annual Parish Meeting, Fr. Allan will announce dates and times for this year’s Confirmation Classes. These classes will be in preparation for the Bishop’s visit. Why not plan to Confirm your faith this year?

LENT, 2020, BEGINS THIS WEEK! Note these dates:

A CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE OF PARISHIONER NANCY BISHOP will be held next Sunday afternoon at 2:P.M. at the Hancock American Legion. Fr. Allan will officiate at a brief service of scripture, prayer and reflection. Afterwards, everyone is invited to enjoy food and fellowship, while sharing memories of Nancy, a woman of special faith in Christ and one who was a friend to so many. All of this is in accordance with the wishes of Nancy and her family. Nancy was a significant part of our Church family, sharing her deep love of God with many and, for a time, singing in the Parish Choir. She will be greatly missed. Please bring a dish to share. It is suggested that you bring your food in a disposable container, or in a container clearly marked with your name. Linda Mellott is helping to coordinate the food, and we greatly thank her! You may call Linda at 717-294-3891 if you have questions.

We hope many of you will want to attend this Celebration for Nancy. And look for her obituary in this week’s issue of The Hancock News.
