USS ENTERPRISE, At sea – Midshipmen from colleges around the country are embarked aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65) June 10, as part of a training cruise to familiarize them with the responsibilities of shipboard life. The three-week training cruise began June 1 and will teach the 14 Reserve Officer Training Corps Midshipmen about daily operations and what life at sea is like aboard an aircraft carrier. The training cruise is designed to provide motivational and instructional experiences that cannot be attained in a normal classroom environment. “I hope to gain a lot of experience, this is my first time on a ship, so I am taking it all in the best I can,” said Midshipman 2nd Class David G. Byfield from Howard University. “Last summer I had to take classes so this is the first time I really get to experience the Navy.” To avoid being overwhelmed by the colossal size of the 1,123 ft. ship, the ‘Mids’ are each paired with a running mate and are assigned to a department, said Lt. Cmdr. Vanessa Givens, Enterprise’s training officer. First Class Midshipmen are each assigned to a

junior officer, and Second Class Midshipmen are each assigned to a junior enlisted Sailor. “This fleet experience is part of their training in order to expose them to the operational Navy so that they can make informed decisions about their Naval careers,” said Givens. “I am very proud to know that the Enterprise team has an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of our future naval officers.” Some goals are to increase professional development, instill a sense of pride in their identification with the Navy and to pique their interest in the operations of the fleet. The Midshipmen’s

summer training program will expose them to shipboard organization /administration, ship systems, evolutions, naval safety precautions, division officer responsibilities, senior / subordinate relationships and military courtesies and customs. “I look forward to learning about carrier operations, nuclear power and the air wing - the complexities of working on a large platform ship,” said Midshipman 1st Class Andrew C. Taylor from University of Illinois. “We have the opportunity here to live as Sailors and learn about the lifestyle before we truly join it.” The Midshipmen participate in shipboard

life, whether underway or in port. They will sleep, eat and work with Sailors to gain the full Enterprise experience. “This is the Enterprise. It’s a really old ship and because of its long lineage and the events that have occurred in the past, there is much to experience on board,” said Taylor. “Big ‘E’ will teach me a great deal about naval leadership because there are many great Sailors leading at all different levels.” “I have met a lot of great leaders aboard Big ‘E’, so I am observing all of their leadership styles so I can try to formulate my own,” said Byfield. “I am looking forward to serving my country.”
