• Introduction to AP Chemistry: Signed up for AP Chemistry next year? Get a head start in Introduction to AP Chemistry. The course is geared towards students who have never taken an AP Course before,, but is open to all who are enrolled in the course in the fall. We will work on skills necessary to succeed in AP Chemistry, review key concepts from Honors Chemistry and get a head start on the actual Chemistry courses.

• Introduction to AP Literature: As students who choose AP Lit having taken only Honors level English can feel overwhelmed by the amount of reading, they will learn strategies for keeping up with the reading load. Students will discover new texts, and learn note-taking and annotation practices for finding and retaining important details and honing analytical skills. In this enrichment course, students will target their thesis-writing on a wide variety of set works of literature, assessing their own work for strengths and areas for improvement; read and annotate poetry, prose and drama; and participate in analytical discussions of literature and the cultures that shape it.

• Blazer Athletic Book Club: Students will read novels and work collaboratively to analyze characters, make real-world connections, describe the problem and resolution, and identify morals. Students will participate in academic discussions and other tasks aligned with the MCPS and MBHS English Summer Reading and Response plan.

• Pursuing Racial Justice in the Age of Covid: Awareness of racial injustice has again moved to the forefront of the nation’s attention.  This time seems different than the past.  How does the backdrop of Covid affect our attention and action on racial injustice?  How do people learn and engage with each other on the topic of racism in digital spaces?  This class will explore the modern nature of racism, teach students how to engage with other people and organizations in digital spaces to work toward racial justice.  Topics include systemic oppression, online activism, dialogue online vs offline, online hate groups and messaging, building healthy digital habits, and more.

• Self-Direction, Collaboration and Success in the age of remote

learning: Learning remotely is very different than classroom learning.  Students will begin to explore those differences and figure out how to transfer  the positive aspects of being in a physical space--dialogue and discussion, working collaboratively, building relationships with new opportunities to direct their own learning in digital spaces.  Course topics include self-directed learning, online learning and research, project-based learning, time-management, digital literacy and communication, and building online relationships.

Students are expected to put in effort in their writing, to share their writing with others, and discuss writing with other students in a supportive and encouraging way. The goal of this class is for students to take risks in their writing, and to enjoy writing. To that end, we will do a number of short writings in class, and students will have opportunities to share their writing in small groups. Learning and discussion will be facilitated by a teacher and several student teaching assistants. Towards the end of the course, students will select and revise one piece and share it with the group. They will also assemble their work into a writing portfolio, which will be printed and mailed to their homes after the course ends.
