i2 Camp King’s Academy is the only school in the Middle East to host the prestigious i2 Camp. This US-based program offers students entering 7th, 8th or 9th grades a series of innovative one-week courses, blending science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The intimate hands-on activities of the courses strive to excite and inspire campers about STEM, creating enthusiasm that will spill over to their schoolwork and school choices in future years. The i2 curriculum was developed through partnerships with world class STEM organizations such as MIT, the Museum of Science in Boston and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. Faculty are excellent science teachers from the United States and Jordan, assisted by university and college students as well as King’s Academy graduates.

All i2 course instruction is in English, so participants need to have a solid knowledge of the language. Below is a list of the courses on offer:

“I came back this year because i2 camp is really fun and challenging, and you get to meet a lot of people. Your knowledge really expands. I want to come back again next year too!”

Arabic Summer at King’s AcademyArabic language instruction at King’s Academy ranks among the region’s best and most comprehensive. Arabic Summer at King’s Academy caters to different levels of backgrounds and abilities in the Arabic language and includes both boarding and day options, depending on which track is chosen. Specific focus is directed at teaching functional Arabic and skills essential for reading, writing and holding conversations.

Students spend five hours each day in a combination of academic class work and cultural activities. There are separate classes for heritage and non-heritage speakers:

Arabic as a Second Language for Heritage Speakers: The aim of this course is to teach basic Arabic language skills (reading, writing, listening and conversation) through a variety of activities and interesting methods that enable students to implement what they have learned in their daily life situations.

Arabic as a Second Language for Non-Heritage Speakers: Specifically designed to teach students both formal written Arabic and conversational spoken Arabic in an enjoyable atmosphere.

Arabic (A-Level review): This course prepares students to study Arabic literature, translation and continuous writing, and helps them achieve the confidence and success they are aiming for.

“My Arabic has improved inside and outside the classroom, by practicing colloquial with my friends a lot. It’s been a tremendous experience and dorm life here is excellent. Interacting with different cultures has been great. You essentially build a family.”

Math Foundations For students seeking to improve their math skills and knowledge (including students who want to work on their English-based math skills), the Math Foundations courses provide a thorough review of various levels of mathematics, including pre-algebra, algebra and geometry. Students are carefully tested upon arrival to ensure proper placement in one of the following courses:

Pre-AlgebraPre-algebra is designed for Grade 7, Grade 8 and Grade 9 students who have not yet mastered the concepts or skills needed for Algebra I. The course covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of rational numbers, basic plane geometry, measurement, percentage, ratio, proportion, solution of simple algebraic equations and an overall emphasis on the fraction concept.

Algebra IAlgebra I is designed for students who have already completed a basic algebra course but who need additional work to master the concepts. Emphasis is on such topics as the properties of the real number system, solving first degree sentences in one variable, the fundamental operations involving polynomial and rational expressions, systems of linear equations in two variables, fractions, factoring, ratio, proportion, variation, exponents, roots, quadratic equations, the trigonometry of right triangles and problem solving.

GeometryGeometry is designed for students who have already completed a basic geometry course but who need additional work to master the concepts. The course is designed to provide students with a robust and rigorous foundation in mathematical skills and concepts via the twin pillars of algebraic manipulation and Euclidean geometry. Topics include the axiomatic system, line and angle relationships, polygons, congruency, similarity, geometry of the circle, area and volume.

Advanced Algebra Advanced algebra is designed for students who have already completed a second-level algebra course (Algebra II in an American system) but who need additional work to master the concepts. Course material includes an emphasis on slope as an average rate of change, introduction of inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, polynomial functions, rational expressions and functions, radical expressions and functions, the introduction of imaginary numbers, right triangle trigonometry and matrices, and an overview of statistics and probability. A graphing calculator is required.

“This summer camp is the best summer camp I’ve ever attended! I’ve seen a difference in how I solve math problems. It was so much fun, I learned a lot and it was very helpful.” Talal Al-AbbadiAmman

Daily Sports and Recreation Camp

Local boys and girls ages six to 12 are invited to participate in the daily sports program, which offers a fun, active and safe environment in which to improve their sports skills, make friends and enjoy summer vacation. Activities include football, basketball, swimming, tennis, art and much more. Each camper selects two major activities, which meet daily for 75 minutes each. Campers are assigned to minor activities, which change every day to offer all participants a wide variety of experiences. Minor activities include basketball, football, swimming, table tennis, art, games, movies, cooking and more. This arrangement allows players to specialize in one sport while developing their skills in another. While avid athletes are encouraged to sign up, no prior experience is necessary. Each activity has a beginner and an advanced section in order to accommodate all skill levels.

With its modern campus and excellent sports facilities, King’s Academy is the ideal location for athletic training. The Academy’s expansive grounds include three football fields, six tennis courts, a multi-purpose indoor court, three outdoor basketball courts and a semi-Olympic indoor swimming pool. The campus also includes an extensive cross country track that can be used for mountain biking.

Plenty of cold water is provided throughout the day, and campers are invited to eat lunch in the school dining hall. An on-campus health center is fully staffed to provide athletic training and medical care in the case of injury or illness. Buses provide optional daily transportation from Amman.

“My daughters absolutely loved it. They were asking to come back next summer before their current session was even over.

They had a blast!”

Our boarding faculty and counselors are experienced with school-based residential life and are trained to assist students with the issues and challenges that may arise with adolescents living in a group environment away from home.

SUMMER at KING’S ACADEMY students have a structured daily schedule that keeps them busy, teaches them good academic habits and creates a routine that both leads to success and allows for fun.

Students are expected to maintain adequate sleep patterns, class attendance and academic performance throughout the SUMMER at KING’S ACADEMY program. It is necessary for students to set aside individual preferences for celebrating and sleep while participating in the program. Parents and students are encouraged to speak with the SUMMER at KING’S ACADEMY director for more information or if they have questions about this important topic.
