Many Mumpreneurs overlook the importance of having a website.

With over 70% of the populati on now having access to a computer or smart phone, the need to have an online presence is greater than ever.

So, why is it some businesses sti ll don’t have one? We’ve done a litt le myth-busti ng to fi nd out.

1) I can’t aff ord itWe’ve all seen the ads for ‘free websites’, but when you read the small print you discover it’s not free at all and the features are… well, you get what you pay for. Then there are the website designers who want to sell you the all singing and all dancing website for £100s of pounds.

Laura Louise, a make up arti st from Tunbridge Wells, only needed a small website (lauralouisemua.co.uk), detailing her services, prices and a gallery to showcase her previous work. Laura chose to use PageFlavour which let her pick a pre-designed template that she could update herself – cutti ng out the web design middle-man, and it only costs her £60 a year.

2) It’s too diffi cult So what about these DIY website products?

Aft er all you may not have a good eye for design. Well, if you can use a keyboard and mouse then you can manage a PageFlavour website. Their websites are already pre-built by a professional designer using glossy images, which can easily be replaced with your own. They have plenty of themes suitable for Mumpreneurs, so just pick a design and start writi ng about your business.

3) I don’t have ti meUsing PageFlavour means the design has already been done, so all you need to do is add your informati on. Although this shouldn’t be rushed, PageFlavour makes it easy for you to build your website page-by-page, working to your schedule. It lets you write a webpage offl ine as a draft , publishing with a single click only when you are happy with the result. At any point you can preview this draft to see what it will look like in context.

4) I don’t need oneTry telling that to Gemma, a babysitt er from Paddock Wood who wasn’t getti ng any response from her fl yers. While most of us wouldn’t expect a young babysitt er to have a website, Gemma thought it would make her look more professional. Aft er putti ng her website address

(gemmasbabysitti ng.com) on her fl yers she has received many phone calls, jobs and comments about how nice it was to see her fees clearly.

5) Will I be top of Google?This area is a minefi eld, with many companies off ering false promises about search engine opti misati on (SEO). Have you ever wondered what happens if 20 business want to be in the top 10?

Graham Allwright of Goplex Communicati ons, a designer on the Queen’s jubilee pageant website, off ered this advice:

”There is no magic butt on for any company to put you at the top. How your site is ranked is based on various factors, mainly quality and reputati on. The web is just another avenue and doesn’t replace the need to adverti se and market your business using traditi onal methods. It takes ti me, eff ort and pati ence.”

In summary, it’s not all about online stores – think of it more as a brochure. Your customers are searching online and they will fi nd your competi tors. Directories are OK for looking up phone numbers, but a website will allow you to give so much more informati on and reassurance that people are looking for.

Family photography Having spent my enti re working life as a photographer, starti ng on plate cameras with bellows and a black cloth over my head, I’ve seen many changes in photography over the years. Today’s cameras are fantasti c and with a litt le knowhow anyone with a bit of training can take nice photographs of their children.

Most people don’t want to read a big camera manual so end up being confused what to do and usually have bad advice over how to take a nice portrait, the sun behind the shoulder, using fl ash, asking a subject to say cheese, all things I don’t do. I train ordinary Mums and Dads to understand light, backgrounds, how to set up a camera properly. It’s not rocket science and I pride myself on not making it diffi cult to understand.

Water babies comes to West KentTeaching water confi dence and safety techniques from birth, the uniquely structured Water Babies programme is designed to make the most of babies’ natural affi nity with water. With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearest solid object. And it’s so important that they do. Within the last three years, at least ten of our children saved themselves from drowning – despite fi ve of them being only two.

Swimming from birth is excellent for babies’ development, providing a complete physical workout which in turn aids the development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness and improve eati ng and sleeping patt erns – a defi nite bonus!

With a clear emphasis on having fun, lessons are generally very sociable occasions – and excellent for strengthening the bond between the two of you.

Bumps & Beyond PhotographyWe’ve just had a photo shoot with our 20 week son & the pictures

are amazing! Sarah was brilliant, we were relaxed & had lots of

fun even though we had to work fast before Seth had enough (he

managed about 50 mins)!

We had the shoot on a Wednesday & the photos were available

to view the following Monday. They are all so good & varied (even

though I’m not the most photogenic of people), we are struggling

to decide which ones to buy! Sarah asked if we had any specifi c

ideas of what we wanted but she had plenty of suggesti ons and

if Seth wasn’t enjoying a

parti cular shot she moved

on quickly. I’m really glad

we chose to go with Sarah

& I know we’ll be going

back when Seth is a bit

older.

Going Nutt y For Children’s YogaDeep in the heart of Kent, a group of 12 children aged between three to fi ve are sitti ng silently in a small copse of Hazelnut trees surrounding a cool, sti ll pond. The only sounds that you can hear are the gentle rustle of the trees, the humming of the occasional bee and the odd plop as a nut hits the water...

The weird thing is that they are not outdoors and it’s not summer, they are experiencing the wonderful world of Yoga Nut; a child’s Yoga class through storytelling and movement.

Caroline Miller is a qualifi ed Briti sh Wheel of Yoga (BWY) teacher of seven years and has set up the excellent Yoga Nut classes for children. As a mother of three young children herself, she is also life qualifi ed in dealing with kids. Caroline said “I am really passionate about Yoga and the health benefi ts it gives us as adults. My children always want to join in when I practi ce at home, so it seemed a natural and obvious progression to

accommodate a child’s imaginati on into Yoga.”

There are obvious health benefi ts that come with Yoga you feel fi tt er, more energeti c, happier and peaceful and that’s just the children! The adults enjoy it too, in parti cular the aft er eff ects; everyone seems genuinely pleased and chilled out.

So if you want your child to use their imaginati on, have some fun and also be strong, healthy and calm (yes, it’s true!) then pop down to a Yoga Nut class and watch as your child becomes a fl amingo, an elephant, the sea, the sun...

TALKING TOTSTalking Tots is a unique group for pre-schoolers that uses games, rhymes and interacti ve acti viti es to help build social confi dence, communicati on and encourage toddlers to develop important skills that will give them a head start in the classroom.

“Our sessions are so much fun, children won’t even realise they’re learning,” says class leader Jane. “They’re playing and making friends, but at the same ti me they’re learning to listen, take turns and work as part of a group.”

The Humpty Dumpty Club prides itself on its excellent

reputation, and the very experienced teachers encourage

11+ Examinations and Summer Preparati on coursesOne of Britain’s leading tutoring service providers, Fleet Tutors, has noted that the fastest growing trend is for coaching for the 11+ grammar school entrance test, especially now that many grammar schools hold their entrance exams earlier in the autumn term school. The industry also reports a doubling in demand for tutors to help seven and eight year-olds with private preparatory school entrance. Recent results show that over 80% of students exceeded their predicted scores in public exams when a reputable tuiti on provider is commissioned.

Mylene Curti s, Managing Director of ‘Fleet Tutors’, says “that parental feedback following our intensive, small group ‘11+ Examinati on Preparati on Courses’ is overwhelmingly positi ve, with parents reporti ng excellent results and many students receiving off ers from their fi rst choice schools. Demand for support in boosti ng a child’s 11+ results, has been met with a sudden growth of intensive, small group revision courses. Children experience fast-paced, focused and intensive tuiti on with the vast majority achieving an increase of at least one grade when a reputable provider is used.

Typically, 11+ exam preparati on courses are designed for small groups of 10 and 11year olds – with a maximum class size of 5 or 6 learners. Footsteps Academy of Dance are running musical theatre courses in Fordcombe 6th-9th August and Mayfi eld 31st July - 3rd August. The courses run daily from 10am - 4pm and are open for children aged 4 - 11. The children will take part in dancing, singing, drama and arts and crafts. The courses culminate in a staged performance for family and friends.

Nature Nuts Summer Holiday Events 2012Young children can get closer to nature and top up their outdoor play ti me this summer holiday thanks to Nature Nuts. Nature Nuts, which holds nature-themed play sessions for kids aged 2-5 years old, is off ering special morning events for tots at venues serving families in Bromley, Sevenoaks and Knockholt

The summer play sessions promise fun games, hands-on craft s and colouring-in, as well as a nature-trail challenge and small prize for each child. Prices and details for each event are available via the website where you can book places direct online www.nature-nuts.co.uk. All children must be accompanied. Music for everyone!Dave Hazlewood is passionate about music! A drummer with around 30 years experience gigging, recording and touring and with a diploma from top London drum school ‘Drumtech’, he runs the one8e studio near Tunbridge Wells.

The studio offers lessons in drums, guitar, bass, vocals and keyboard. It is fully equipped with top level equipment and is totally soundproofed and air conditioned.

Lessons are available for all abilities (beginner to advanced) and all ages (from 7 - 70) with special daytime rates for retired or self employed people.

Lessons can follow a very structured syllabus or can be adapted to suit individual students needs. They focus on being realistic, practical and fun with extensive use of backing tracks and play along material.

Join a bandThis August the school will be running group ‘band lessons’, putting musicians of similar age and ability into bands to learn and maybe even write songs. The goal at the end will be either a live performance or a recording session. Register your interest early.
