What’s in This Issue?

A History of Cake

By: Jillian

For my article I sat down with Marty with questions about how cake started.C.A.K.E started when Marty was 11 and went to a camp called Charles River

Creative Arts Program (CRCAP) in Dover Massachusetts. While at camp she met her “people” and she later ran her own version for 5 years. 21 years ago Marty moved to Keene and thought that it needed a Multi Arts camp like hers. Since MoCo was already a program in Keene she went to Carol Batchetter who originally operated the company and brought her idea to her. Three major changes have occurred since the camp first started. Originally the camp was in the old Keene Middle School on Washington St. In the beginning, Marty would drive a van and pick up campers in the morning to bring them to camp. When it came to instruments for the music program, the instruments were made by the campers from at home materials.

Since COVID there have been many changes at the camp and MoCo such as wearing masks during classes and classes that currently cannot be offered. The camp was split into two cohorts this year due to the virus. With New Hampshire opening up more the camp is able to be looser with restrictions such as social distancing (no longer 6 feet apart).

Some ways the camp has changed since the new MoCo building was finished is the air ventilation system which has helped with heat in the building especially with movement intensive classes. Two other things that have helped are the Blackbox Theatre and a TV system which helped with remote classes throughout the virtual camp in 2020. Marty hopes that camp will be allowed to open up once again in the future. Her favorite memory from camp is from 2019 when the fire alarm went off so everyone had to go to the parking lot but Gavin and Logan entertained the campers by playing guitar.

By: Emmaline

Hi I’m Emmaline and I’m going to take you on my day at C.A.K.E! Get in the car and fasten your seatbelts.

The day starts in the car at the carpool line. We’ll need to put on a face covering when we get out of the car. When we enter the building we get our temperature checked and then we can go to our homeroom.

I’ll show you my homeroom next! Georgia and Izzy are my homeroom counselors. Hey there is my friend Luisa! Let’s talk about our schedules!

Luisa is taking: C.A.K.E Magazine, Minute Movies, C.A.K.E Podcast, 3D Art and Fiction Workshop.

I’m taking: C.A.K.E Magazine, Drawing, Painting / Coloring, Dungeons and Dragons, and Fiction Workshop.

After morning meeting, I start off in C.A.K.E Magazine where we write articles like this one! In Drawing we are able to express our feelings through art. In Painting / Coloring we paint all the things we love. After lunch we have festival period where we get to choose our own classes from a list of new ones each day! In Dungeons and Dragons we create characters and role play an adventure. In fiction workshop we write fictional stories!

Time for me to go! Thank you forletting me share my great day with you!
