PHIL HANSEN How Constraints Foster Creativity

Bio:

Phil Hansen is an internationally recognized multimedia artist, speaker, author, and innovator at the forefront of bringing art to a broader audience . Crashing irreverently through conventional boundaries, Phil works at the intersection of traditional art, electronic media, offbeat materials, and interactive experiences . He is most well-known for his meta-art (videos that document the creation process, sometimes through destruction), showing millions that art is action, not just result . His Embrace the Shake TED Talk is a favorite of art teachers everywhere .

Besides speaking and creating art, Phil is an advocate for advancing art education . He’s the author of Tattoo a Banana, a guide to exploring creativity through art with everyday materials . He’s also the founder of Goodbye-Art Academy, providing free, high-quality art education videos to teachers and students everywhere .

Presentation:

We face limitations daily . What if there’s a way to listen to our limitations and make them work for us, not against us? Phil will share a fascinating personal story about turning his limitation into an act of creativity that completely changed his artistic horizons . Accompanied by jaw-dropping visuals, Phil will deliver a moving message about how we can change our lives by not only overcoming but embracing our limitations .

Supplies:

Phil will ask you (yes, you!) to create a digital drawing on your smartphone or tablet during his presentation . Back in his studio, he will make an artwork utilizing all of the NOW attendees’ drawings .

THANKS TO OUR SPONSORSInnovative Box Cutter by Canary This Canary box cutter is an engineering marvel that has a variety of uses in the art room . The fine sawtooth edge keeps you and your students safe, and the nonstick coating ensures that tape and adhesives won’t stick to the blade . You’ll never look at cardboard boxes the same way again!

Spectra AD™ Markers by Chartpak Spectra AD markers provide endless color possibilities . The flexible brush tip offers a smooth, variable line that adjusts with pressure, while the tri-nib tip provides a thin, medium, and thick line with a twist of the wrist . Watch Candido Crespo’s presentation on comics to discover ideas on how to use them, and don’t forget to try out the paper sampler!

Action! Stencil Project by Blick This stencil allows students to predesign a piece and then rapidly create multiple prints that suggest movement . Students will learn how to design and cut a basic stencil, then use felt-tip daubers to fill them in quickly . Your students will love this engaging project!

ChromaDepth® 3D Glasses by American Paper Optics The ChromaDepth 3D glasses use micro-optics to transform color images into true stereo 3D with no special software required . Check out the American Paper Optics website to learn how to make your own 3D images with your favorite graphics software or even create an image with markers or crayons!

The Pencil Grip Sample Bag The Kwik Stix paint sticks are incredibly popular and easy to use, and the unique pencil grip stops students from crossing over their fingers when writing or drawing . Plus, the fun design is motivating . Simply place your thumb on the “R” or “L” on the grip, and your fingers will naturally fall into place .

Conference Sketchbook by SketchforSchools Fully customizable, SketchforSchools offers many different levels of quality paper, both hot and cold-pressed . They are all acid-free, too! The reinforced back and front covers and quality binding are durable enough to stand up to daily student use .

AOEU Tumbler Art teachers can never have enough cups, glasses, or tumblers around, and you’re going to love this one . Pick a favorite artistic drink from the preconference menu and bring it to the event!

Art to Remember Art-Themed Dog Tag Necklace Check out the ATR website for simple ideas for a great project . Fundraising with Art to Remember can be successful at all age levels!

Stay tuned for big giveaway announcements from Gelli Arts, OOLY, and Sculpey on conference day! (Note: You’re automatically registered for the raffle and don’t need to be present to win.)
