Music Notes

By Mark Jonkman, Director of Music “Top Eight Reasons for Joining the Choir” 8. You’re running out of clean clothes and the choir robes save on laundry. 7. You've just been selected for jury duty and want to get used to sitting with a group of people. 6. When the church is full you want to be sure to have a seat. 5. The collection plate is never passed to the choir. 4. For years you've wanted to know who sits in the back pews but were always afraid to turn around. 3. You've been known to nod off during the service and don't want the pastor to catch you (this doesn’t work). 2. The chairs in the choir are the most comfortable than in the sanctuary. And the #1 reason to join the choir is: Serving the Lord. Considering all He does for us, it's like giving back to Him. St. Andrew’s offers several opportunities to raise your voice and hands in thanks and praise to God. There is a place for you, no matter what your age or ability. If you are new to town or to the church, these smaller “faith families” within our larger church family are an excellent starting point. We are very proud of our music program, and we are eager for you to join us! Here are details on some of the musical opportunities awaiting you and your family. Chancel Choir – Teens to Adult. Practices on Thursday Nights at 7:30. Cantata Choir – Teens to Adult. Practices take place during Fall Chancel Choir rehearsals on Thursday nights every other year in preparation for the Christmas Cantata Performance. Our next Cantata will take place during the 2019 Christmas Season. ‘New’ New Life Singers – 2nd Grade through Young Adult. Practices between services on Sunday Mornings. Bell Choir – Young Adult and up… Rehearsals fluctuate depending on when we perform. Instrumentalists – Instrumental musicians are invited to play for Christmas and Easter services to ac-company the hymns during services. There is usually a run-through rehearsal before each service. Any Middle School and up band or orchestral instrumentalist is invited to play. Interested??? Please contact me at [email protected] or drop me a note in my mailbox at church!

From The Captain’s Table [PK’s Perusings]

Here at St. Andrew’s in the Pentecost Season we must admit that we are not the only church which values and heeds the working of God’s Holy Spirit. But we definitely are one. LET’S SEE. How will you recognize the working of God’s Holy Spirit? Hear this parable: There was a young lad who was just learning to play the piano. The boy’s mother, wishing to encourage the boy’s progress, bought tickets for a concert by Paderewski, Poland’s famous composer and concert pianist. When the night arrived, they found their seats near the front of the concert hall and eyed the majestic Steinway waiting on stage. Waiting for the concert to begin, the mother chatted with several of the people sitting around her, during which, unbeknownst to her, the young boy slipped away. Well, the lights dimmed, the spotlights came on, the audience quieted, and only then did anyone notice the young boy, on stage, sitting at the piano, innocently plucking “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” His mother gasped. The audience giggled. And just then, the master appeared on stage. And seeing the young lad, Paderewski quickly moved to the keyboard. “Don’t quit,” he whispered to the boy…”Keep playing.” Reaching around the young lad with his left hand, Paderewski began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around the other side, encircling the child, to add a running Obbligato. Together, the old master and the young novice held the crowd mesmerized.

The working of God’s Holy Spirit is shown and known in the enablement of our lives as Continued. see Pastor, next page

On Sunday, June 9th at 10:30am we will celebrate

as four of our young people are confirmed as

members of St. Andrew’s. Plan to stay and join us

for a reception following the service.

On Sunday, June 16th (at the 9am service) we will

rejoice with the families of our graduating seniors, as

these students are presented with handmade comfort

quilts from the devoted ladies of St. Andrew’s

Comforters. Please make note of this NEW date.

St. Andrew’s is searching for a new coordinator, as well as additional volunteers, for our 2019 Summer Vacation Bible School (VBS). VBS is a vital outreach ministry of our church, and is typically held the first full week of August.

The vision for VBS is that of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with children from our church family, as well as those in our local community, with the hope of estab-lishing long term relationships with the families. VBS is a fun, high energy week that requires numerous volun-teers to make it successful and is certainly a blessing to the community.

As in previous years, the church will purchase curriculum for VBS which includes leader guidebooks, music, student materials, a media kit, and more.

Can we count on you to volunteer in either a leadership or helper position? For more information on the most fun volunteer gig in Palmer Township, please contact Diane Laustsen at 610-217-0448.

YOUTH MINISTRY

PASTOR, continued from page 2

Individual and as congregation…our witness, our good works, and frankly our persistence. “Don’t quit! Keep playing!” is the courage and strength He has planted in us. His is the voice that directs and gives us purpose. His are the left hand and right hand that make a symphony of our Twinkle, Twinkle. It is the working of God’s Holy Spirit which consecrates what we do…that is, which makes it Effective, to Accomplish something, and to Stand for something. And it is His joining his right and left hands with Us, that joins Us with Others into that harmonious voice which proclaims in concert to the world that GOD is King…not profit, or power, or politics.

We are not the only church which values and heeds the working of God’s Holy Spirit, but we definitely are one.

And the “Twinkle, Twinkle’ we’ve played together with God these past 8 months has been Total Blessing to Me. Thank You…..and Godspeed.

Baptized, together with You,

PK

CHURCH COUNCIL

The Church Council met on Tuesday, May 14. All council members

were present. Here are some highlights of the meeting.

Holy Communion has been added to the 10:30 service on May 26th

due to a baptism that morning.

A new vacuum sweeper was purchased by SAW for Hope House.

The Treasurer reports that our expenses are on target, and the use

of supply pastors over the summer will help with the budget. He is

working with our new Bookkeeper. New credit cards will soon be

issued by the bank.

Staff evaluations have been completed and an exit interview will

soon be completed with Pastor Kidd.

The Tricky Tray has been moved to Sunday, September 8th—Rally

Day and God’s Work, Our Hands.

We are seeking a new coordinator for Vacation Bible School.

Property Team reports that approximately 30 hours of combined

work went into Spring Clean-Up Day. The Sanctuary roof has been

repaired and a window was replaced in the Nursery School.

Nursery School: There was discussion regarding unsafe drivers in

parking lot during school hours. Graduation will be held May 20

and 21 with opening remarks by Council Members.

With One Voice, Setting Four, will be used for worship during the

summer months.

The handbells will be refurbished at a cost of approx. $1300.

Quilt disbursement to our graduates will be moved to June 16th.

Council will meet with the Call Committee on May 19th.

Update on The Call Process

On April 28, a Congregational Meeting was held where Pastor Jean Huber answered questions and led us in completing a survey on who we are as a congregation. On May 19, the Call Committee and Church Council met to complete the Ministry Site Profile, a much more extensive survey.

The next step in the Call process is to compile the results of these two surveys into a book that will be given to Pastors considering the position at St. Andrew’s. The Call Committee has met to determine the direction the process will take. We will be looking at two candidates at once; Pastor Tom Neel, who was nominated by Church Council on behalf of member’s requests and letters, and a yet unidentified candidate the Synod has in mind. We recognize that this process seems to be taking a long time, but we are working through the necessary steps to ensure that the best possible candidate is chosen as the next pastor of St. Andrew’s.

Before we take offering I have a couple of announcements..first of

all, I wanted to present the new church ATM…..

MILESTONES

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

There are several types of dementia. Alzheimer’s is the most common form and accounts for 60-80% of cases. There is no specific test for Alzheimer’s. A doctor relies mostly on observation and ruling out other possibilities.

There are 10 early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s:

1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life 2. Challenges in planning or solving problems 3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work, or at leisure 4. Confusion with time or place 5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships 6. New problems with words in speaking or writing 7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps 8. Decreased or poor judgment 9. Withdrawal from work or social activities 10. Changes in mood and personality

If you notice any of the TEN WARNING SIGNS of Alzheimer’s in yourself or someone you know, don’t ignore them. Schedule an appointment with your doctor immediately. With early detection, you can explore treatments that may provide some relief of symptoms and help you maintain a level of independence longer.

Teepa Snow, a leading expert on Alzheimer’s will be in the Lehigh Valley on July 15, 2019 from 9AM-3PM at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA. Call 1.800.360.1222 for more information.

Also, an Alzheimer’s support group meets the first Wednesday of every month at 9:30AM and 6PM at Galilee House, Moravian Hall Square, 175 West North St., Nazareth, PA 18064. For more information, please call 610.746.1000.
