June & July 2019: Read! Kids participating in the Summer SERRF Program will read the book. You can also read it on your own/family time and by visiting the Tehama County Library.

Cost: $139 ($85 if current 4-H member); Discount available to families with multiple children.

Tehama County 4-H Youth camp is 4 days of fun packed activities for campers ranging from 9-13 years old! At this camp, youth will discover new interests and can try new things as well as enjoy traditional camp activities like hiking, fishing, archery, arts and crafts and more! All youth in Tehama County are welcome to attend, 4-H member or not!

June 10th – July 26th

Cost: The three week-long day camps cost $75 each, with a discount if a youngster is signed up for double sessions. Each folk school class is $20, with a discount if a youngster

is enrolled in five or more classes. Located just a few miles west of Red Bluff, the Folk School of Whittenberg and Whittenberg Country School are offering summer classes and day camps, running from June 10th through July 26th. Morning classes/sessions run from 9-12, and are geared toward younger kids (7-11); afternoon classes/sessions run from 1-4, and are geared toward older kids (10-14). There will also be some additional offerings for Saturday activities, such as kayaking.

The FSoW & WCS summer program is organized into the following thematic weeks:

- June 17-21: Shakespeare week

- June 24-28: Arts & crafts classes

- July 1-5: Space science week

- July 8-12: Cooking classes

Tehama County PAL and Tehama County Department of Education Mentoring Program is a youth prevention program that promotes a positive relationship among law enforcement, the community and our youth. Our purpose is to create a safe environment for children and reduce juvenile crime by providing our youth a way to find guidance, life perspective, and authority-figure role models they can trust while gaining education and interpersonal development. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) uses horses as tools to gain understanding and personal insights into human nature. This includes doing fun activities with horses that are effective for establishing boundaries and improving problem-solving skills. EAP challenges the individual in new ways that allows for reflection and growth. Includes horsemanship skills such as grooming, leading and grazing. Essential ranching skills such as mucking stalls, cleaning chicken coops, goat pens and the hay barn. Mending fences and painting are just a few of the other skills you learn during a day at the ranch.

KOSC Camps are hosted Sunday-Friday at the beautiful Red Bank Outfitters in Red Bluff. Youth are educated about the outdoors, wildlife, and conservation. All kids will go through Hunters Education and will receive their Hunters Ed Certification if they pass the exam at the end of the week. They will receive hands on training from our first class instructors on how to safely and successfully shoot shotguns, rifles, and archery, and they will even learn how to fish! Advanced Camp: If your child already has their HE certificate, they can attend our advanced camp, where they will receive more advanced training in all areas listed above. TAKE THE REACH HIGHER TRAIL CHALLENGE Beginning on National Get Outdoors Day, June 8, you can participate in the new Reach Higher Trail Challenge. The new 2019 challenge form invites participants to hike at least seven miles and learn more about Lassen’s very own Sierra Nevada red fox to earn a commemorative bandana. Pick up a participation brochure at any entrance station, the Loomis Museum, the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center or print a copy at home from go.nps.gov/reachhigher.

HIKE IN THE PARKWith over 150 miles of hiking trails to choose from, you are sure to find the level you and your friends are most comfortable with, from easy to strenuous.

Join Tracy Salcedo, author of Hiking Lassen Volcanic National Park, this summer for a walk-and-talk hike around Manzanita Lake. This easy trail winds gently around Manzanita Lake and is an ideal choice for families or others unable to hike on difficult terrain. Well shaded by looming Jeffrey pines and bordered by lush willows, this trail offers a welcomed respite from the heat of the day.

ACRYLIC PLEIN AIR PAINTING WORKSHOPMeet at the Devastated Area parking area June 22, 2019 | 9AM - 12PM Ages: 10 and older

Cost: $30 per person; $25 for Lassen Association Members; $10 for children ages 10-18 with paid adult

Plein Air means painting on location. This three-hour course will be geared towards the beginner who may have never painted with acrylic before but any level of painter is welcome.

Children 10 and up are able to attend class with parent participation. This class will cover how to choose what to paint from the overall view, basic techniques such as painting on canvas, applying paint, brush strokes, and finishing with the detail work. When you’re done, you go home with a work of art painted by you!

Celebrate Lassen Volcanic National Park’s birthday (August 9) at the Day in the Park Festival hosted by the Lassen Park Foundation from 11-2PM in the Loomis Plaza on August 10th. Enjoy information booths with hands-on activities, live music, face painting, and art displays. A fundraiser barbecue lunch will be served by Anderson Rotary Club.

Participants in the second annual Reach the Peak Hike-a-Thon on August 11 will hike the Lassen Peak Trail to raise money for youth camping programs. This fundraiser is organized by the Lassen Park Foundation, which provides a fueling station at the trailhead with water and snacks to take with you on the trail (there will not be aid stations along the route). JUNIOR POPPERS (HIP HOP): Calling all boys and girls for this fun and high-energy hip-hop class. Dancers develop musicality, creativity, listening skills and coordination. INTRO TO ROBOTICS: Students will get first-hand experience building and programming their own robots! We will be using LEGO Mindstorm and Arduino Robotics Kits. The kids will work in groups to create their own bots! This provides instruction on teaching how to ‘think’ like a robot, creating a flowchart for programming purposes, trial and error programming techniques (debugging) and final project output.

VIDEO GAME PROGRAMMING BEGINNERS: Learn how to create your own video game! Kids will start off the class by learning what code is and how to create and preset blocks of code. The students will be able to move present characters around and make them move per their instruction. Will then move on to more advanced coding techniques and applications like blockly, which will give the techniques and skills for the final portion of the class using CodaKid. This will allow programming from beginning to intermediate. Note, this is a STEM heavy class.

ROCKET SCIENCE FOR KIDS!: Using the popular educational game, Kerbal Space Program, we will cover Newtonian physics, planetary motion, change in delta-V and other rocketry terms. While having fun, kids can build and launch their own rockets inside the program, allowing them to get into orbit, build space stations, land on the moon and - if they are adept enough - go to Mars.
