Cost: The three week-long day camps cost $75 each, with a discount if a youngster is signed up for double sessions. Each folk school class is $20, with a discount if a youngster

Located just a few miles west of Red Bluff, the Folk School of Whittenberg and Whittenberg Country School are offering summer classes and day camps, running from June 10th through July 26th. Morning classes/sessions run from 9-12, and are geared toward younger kids (7-11); afternoon classes/sessions run from 1-4, and are geared toward older kids (10-14). There will also be some additional offerings for Saturday activities, such as kayaking.

Join Tracy Salcedo, author of Hiking Lassen Volcanic National Park, this summer for a walk-and-talk hike around Manzanita Lake. This easy trail winds gently around Manzanita Lake and is an ideal choice for families or others unable to hike on difficult terrain. Well shaded by looming Jeffrey pines and bordered by lush willows, this trail offers a welcomed respite from the heat of the day.

CAMP IN THE PARKThe park has over 450 camping sites at 8 locations from fairly rustic to RV friendly. Certain sites may be reserved in advance while others are first come first serve.

ACRYLIC PLEIN AIR PAINTING WORKSHOPMeet at the Devastated Area parking area June 22, 2019 | 9AM - 12PM Ages: 10 and older

Cost: $30 per person; $25 for Lassen Association Members; $10 for children ages 10-18 with paid adult

Plein Air means painting on location. This three-hour course will be geared towards the beginner who may have never painted with acrylic before but any level of painter is welcome.

Children 10 and up are able to attend class with parent participation. This class will cover how to choose what to paint from the overall view, basic techniques such as painting on canvas, applying paint, brush strokes, and finishing with the detail work. When you’re done, you go home with a work of art painted by you!

The most popular boating lakes include Manzanita Lake, Butte Lake, Juniper Lake, and Summit Lake.

FISHINGCalifornia fishing regulations apply to all areas within Lassen Volcanic National Park. A California fishing license is not required on two free fishing days: July 6 and August 31, 2019.

Additional fishing regulations apply at Manzanita Lake:

• Catch and release only.

• Artificial lures with a single barbless hook. No power bait.

• Manzanita Creek above Manzanita Lake is closed to fishing.

RANGER-LED PROGRAMSMid-June through early September Lassen Volcanic National Park offers a wide variety of Ranger-led and Junior Ranger programs throughout the summer. Celebrate Lassen Volcanic National Park’s birthday (August 9) at the Day in the Park Festival hosted by the Lassen Park Foundation from 11-2PM in the Loomis Plaza on August 10th. Enjoy information booths with hands-on activities, live music, face painting, and art displays. A fundraiser barbecue lunch will be served by Anderson Rotary Club.

Participants in the second annual Reach the Peak Hike-a-Thon on August 11 will hike the Lassen Peak Trail to raise money for youth camping programs. Each week students will get a taste of their favorite sports while making new friends and getting some much needed physical activity outside. The structure of this program is designed to teach your young ones the necessary fundamentals of sports in a stress-free environment while having fun. The idea is to explore concepts, spark ideas to life, gain confidence, and experiment with both fiction and nonfiction. Each student will create their own story and end class with a novel of their own creation.

JUNIOR POPPERS (HIP HOP): Calling all boys and girls for this fun and high-energy hip-hop class. Dancers develop musicality, creativity, listening skills and coordination. This class provides an introductory level of basic hip hop skills where the moves and music are age appropriate for the dancers.

Ages: 7-11 Cost for Classes: $20 Residents; $25 Non-Residents Schedule: Classes start 6/17 and run through 8/12. Monday nights from 4:15-5:15PM.

DANCE & DRILL: This class is a preparation class for young girls who have the desire to be a part of the Corning High School Drill Team, a dance team or who would just like to improve their dance abilities in various styles. These could include a technique session or a combination routine which would involve the styles of kick, military, jazz, lyrical, and pom.


HIP HOP GROOVE: If you love hip-hop, this is the class for you. Classes will encourage dancers to step outside their box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Combining high energy, popular music, and fun choreography, dancers will explore the versatility of hip-hop.


TEEN DANCE: Introductory level dance class for Teens! Participants will talk with instructor and come up with what style of dance they would like to do!

INTRO TO ROBOTICS: Students will get first-hand experience building and programming their own robots! We will be using LEGO Mindstorm and Arduino Robotics Kits. The kids will work in groups to create their own bots! This provides instruction on teaching how to ‘think’ like a robot, creating a flowchart for programming purposes, trial and error programming techniques (debugging) and final project output.

Ages: 10-17 Cost for Classes: $45 Residents; $50 Non-Residents Schedule: Classes start 6/18 and run through 8/22. Tues/Thurs from 5:30-7:30PM.

VIDEO GAME PROGRAMMING BEGINNERS: Learn how to create your own video game! Kids will start off the class by learning what code is and how to create and preset blocks of code. The students will be able to move present characters around and make them move per their instruction. Will then move on to more advanced coding techniques and applications like blockly, which will give the techniques and skills for the final portion of the class using CodaKid. This will allow programming from beginning to intermediate. Note, this is a STEM heavy class.

ROCKET SCIENCE FOR KIDS!: Using the popular educational game, Kerbal Space Program, we will cover Newtonian physics, planetary motion, change in delta-V and other rocketry terms. While having fun, kids can build and launch their own rockets inside the program, allowing them to get into orbit, build space stations, land on the moon and - if they are adept enough - go to Mars.

TINY TOTS PLAY CLUB: The children have an opportunity to explore a variety of different materials we provide to use their different senses. They learn to communicate with children their age, while parents watch the delight on their faces each week. Your child gets the opportunity to explore music, dance, reading time, singing and art! GYMSTERS: Kids are elated as they sing, dance, play games and have “Surprise Time”. Gymsters gain confidence with a new equipment set up each week. Parents will notice an improvement on spatial awareness of kids bodies in this structured and fun class. Parents are active participants in this class.
