regional officer’s reportRose ParsonsI’M WRITING this update to you all enjoying very welcome warm sunshine and the feeling of new lifeand energy emerging all around. Reflecting on this vitality and hope, it
struck me that this year will also beabout channelling energy and newgrowth to build upon the firmly rooted,knowledgeable and generous member-ship of the BWY in the West Midlands. Your committee is continuing to work
to provide training and events which wehope interest you, support your yogajourney and provide opportunities forus to come together as a community inyoga. If you have suggestions in howwe can improve your membership experience please let us know.Please join me in welcoming PaulThomson onto the committee as ournew webadmin. Paul has picked up therole really quickly and is a greataddition to the team. We need your help in two key ways to
keep the opportunities for our regionalcommunity fresh and engaging:1) We need volunteers. There are
currently vacancies for the Staffordshire county representative(CR) role and the regional festival organiser. In addition, the regionaltraining officer and the Hereford andWorcestershire CR roles will requirenew candidates at next AGM. If anyoneis interested in any of these rolesplease contact myself or any of thecommittee. There is an opportunity towork with the current committee
members as a deputy or just as a support to see how the roles work without any final commitment. As well as the vacant roles if you want
to just help out in your county let yourCR know, getting more members involved not only shares the load, itprovides more energy and ideas.2) We need your input. Talk to yourcounty representative (or any of thecommittee) regarding what you wouldlike to see happening in your countyand how the BWY might support youryoga journey and add value to yourmembership. Margaret Murray, the regional officer
chair, is bringing the together the regional officers and BWYT to agree aclear regional strategy for the BWY focussed upon our members. As youknow all BWY committees are reliantupon our volunteer base, we can’t dothis without you so let us know if thereis anything you can do to support usand your fellow regional members.By the time you read this you will
probably have voted. Within the ballotpack you will have received notice ofthe EGM on May 19 at Warwick University. Directors are required to beappointed at a general meeting with aquorum of 50 members - as local mem-bers please attend so we can ensurethe requisite numbers and get the newNEC appointed.

HELLO - I have just taken over therole as regional website and emailadmin from Leigh Marchant.I would just like to say a big thank you
to Leigh and all the other local regionalcommittee members for helping meinto this role.I started practising Sivananda Yoga in
2006, going to a weekly class in Rugby,soon realising how this can benefit mein so many ways, as a physical, mentaland spiritual health system. In the past,I have practiced Karate and Ju Jitsuand found the meditation techniquesvery useful - not realising at the timewhat they were. I started going to more Yoga classes
with as many local teachers as possible and was then, with encouragement from Natalie Wiltshire,a local teacher, encouraged to start ateacher training course. Looking roundat all the different courses out there, I
decided to go on the BWY one. I completed my BWY training with
Paul Fox in 2013 and have been teaching ever since, in Rugby, Coventry and the surrounding area. As well as having my own website to
update, I was for a long time the website admin for RAYS (Rugby AreaYoga Society) a local Yoga group, soonce I have got up to speed with theBWY website I will be a little bit fasterthan I am at the moment, so please bepatient with me.

BRITISH Wheel of Yoga teacher and member since 2000, Emma Bradbury-Jones began yoga and meditation in her early 20s as a form of solaceand comfort from personal stress. She has been teaching since 2001 and completed the YogaBugs training for
children 2006. During her Psychology Degree (2008) course she became interested in mindfulness and has completed an eight-week Mindfulness forStress Reduction course. She has taught many different groups including children, teenagers, pregnant women, sick and injured soldiers for the BritishLegion and more recently, climbers.

Pilgrimage
TALK to the average person in thestreet about a pilgrimage and theymight think of a trip to a retail paradise. . . . . . Talk to a yogi and there should be adifferent response: not a trip to buy thelatest yoga wear/mat/block, nor an escape to a glamorous “yoga” centresomewhere exotic. In the Indian tradition
pilgrimage, or yatra, is acentral part of spirituallife which is repeatedevery day in visits to thetemple, and for longerjourneys across thelength and breadth ofIndia.The idea of going on a
pilgrimage has been animportant part of spirituallife for thousands ofyears. The CanterburyTales may be our first connection withpilgrimage but we also have the mythi-cal story of Arthur and the quest for theHoly Grail. But why is pilgrimage so valid even
for us in the modern world?A pilgrimage implies a journey with anaim or a goal in mind. It is commonlyrecognised that the journey is as important as the destination. It is on theroad that we learn most about ourself,
and that prepares us for what we are toexperience and achieve. For that reason there has always
been a degree of suffering involved inbeing a pilgrim. It involves renunciationof some of the comforts of life, and achallenge to our normal attitudes andstandards. Forget the AC luxury car or
coach dropping you off atthe nearest point to thedestination. Be preparedto rub shoulders withpeople unlike yourself.Shed some of your inhibitions, even yourgloves and shoes, orbeads and hippy wear.Accept your journey as aform of tapas. The experience of
pilgrimage may take youon a linear journey –there and back by the
same route, with time to think aboutwhat the destination may teach you.The route may seem to be circular withno particular point of focus and wherethe whole journey becomes a meditation. Either way yatra, a journey with a
spiritual aim, will begin or enhance thetransformation of yoga which leads usfrom “the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, and from despair to

learningto twistand lockMORE than 30 Yogisgathered in Shrewsbury in Marchto welcome Zoe Knottfor an IST day exploring twists. Many of us had enjoyed
Zoe’s visits in the past,so had been looking forward to this event forsome time.There was plenty of
excitement and chatteras we all arrived, whichsoon settled as Zoebegan with a pranayamapractice relevant to ourtwisting practice, expanding the ribs on inhalation and engagingbandhas on exhalation. Zoe discussed and
demonstrated supinetwisting with feet on/offthe floor and how thischanges the position ofthe lumbar spine. We practiced a lovely
sequence of supinetwists, taking the armoverhead to experience a
wonderful stretch in thearmpit and upper chest.Zoe also led us through
seated, kneeling andstanding twists, givingvery clear demonstrations and instructions before weexperienced the sequences ourselves.The day was very wellpaced with time for discussion of each sequence after we hadpracticed it. A favourite asana for
me was Adho MukhaSvanasana, taking onehand to the outside of theopposite foot (Downward
Dog Twist). This pose always makesme smile as I lookthrough to see life from adifferent angle!Overall, a very inspiring,
informative and enjoyable day. I am sure we will all
look forward very muchto Zoe’s next visit toShropshire.

Yoga Philosophy and Everyday Living Course. June 16 2018 to February 16, 2019Stoneleigh, Warwickshire.WHETHER we are aware of it or not,we all have some sort of philosophy forliving. Often we are not aware because we
have grown up with it and it has growngradually with our experience of life. Itwill have come from Mum and Dad atfirst, from our wider family, the neighbourhood and culture we havegrown up in, from our education etc.If it is serving us well, we will have a
sound understanding of how to dealwith life and all its ups and downs, sothat life feels (generally!) joyful. But,too often it is not serving us well – wemay be applying beliefs (about ourselves and life in general) and values that no longer fit the person weare and the life we are leading now.Yoga philosophies are very confusing
too – they have grown and developedin India over millennia, absorbing bitsfrom outside influences too – competi-tors (Buddhists), conquerors (IslamistMughals) and colonists (Christian?Brits.)!The aim of the course is to clarify
yoga and other philosophies, and allowus to question and hone our own views

Yoga Fest 2018 ReviewsYOGA FEST is a great way tocatch up with old friends, makenew ones and try different stylesof yoga and teaching methods.On Friday I began with a lovely
Scaravelli-inspired session with SarahLinsey and Bridget Thornborrow, focussing on standing poses and balances.After dinner I headed to Ramphal to
listen to Timothy McCall talk about theHolistic Science of Yoga Therapy. Thiswas a very interesting session thatended with aninvitation tocomplete a formif you would liketo have a YogaTherapy session overthe weekend inpublic todemonstratehow such assession can beconducted. Mylast session onFriday was awonderfulpranayama andmeditation practice withYogachariyaGnandev Girifrom the YogaSatsangaAshram inWales. Thesession was so
peaceful, it made me want to visit theAshram. Another one for the bucketlist. Highlights for Saturday included awonderful session with Rosie Wright –her practice included nauli, which Ihaven’t practiced since my teachertraining days. After breakfast, ZoeKnott led a session that included workin Adho Mukkha Svanasana, placingmore weight into the fingers, ratherthan the palms of the hands – tricky,but she made it look easy! After lunchwas the AGM which was very well at-
tended. ThenCarol Price covered a classtitled ‘Flow and Restore’. Carolis a wonderfulteacher and Ifelt wonderfulby the end of it.Sunday startedwith a lovelywalking medita-tion around thelake. I also attended an interesting session about‘ChangingDiets’ with MilaBogen. Then itwas time to saygoodbye to myfriends, untilnext year any-way!

Yoga Fest 2018 Review by Sharlene PooleA fantastic weekend of yoga it was too! Myfirst class was Ashtanga with Scott Johnsonand Andy Gill. Then evening satsang, a discussion on pranayama and meditation, byYogachariya Jnandev Giri. So this contrast in yoga styles and pace be-came an unintentional theme for my weekend.Which upon reflection is how I actually practice at home. Perhaps somewhere in themiddle of fastness and slowness is where Ifind balance and equilibrium - finding ‘TheMiddle Way’ if you like.Another vinyasa style of yoga I experiencedwas Rachael Moore’s Yoga Flow. More jumpbacks in sun salutes eeekkk! I was trying tosave my arms for 6.30am Mysore practice -though Rachael gave modifications to suiteveryone. I had the pleasure of meeting DrTimothy McCall. His book ‘Yoga as Medicine’has assisted me and my students well duringmy years of teaching. One of my last sessionswas with the lovely Emma Slade, Pema Deki,author of ‘Set Free’. Perfect meditation tocomplete my Yoga Fest journey - finding my‘Middle Way’ again. There was so much variety, laughs, ideas and styles to suit everyone. Happy times!

EARLIER this year I launched GentleYears Yoga at Malvern Cube afterbeing selected for a BWY training module to address the needs of olderadults. In the context of a modern Britain,
with an ageing population and manypeople diagnosed with life-limiting conditions earlier and living with themfor longer, BWY wanted to develop ateaching model that went beyond asana-dominated classes, so prevalentnowadays.Gentle Years Yoga is mostly
chair-based practice, and developsconcentration, co-ordination, physicalfitness, strength and flexibility withplenty of fun too! An average sessionmay include the use of beanbags, sensory balls, resistance straps, blocksand scarves - all great tools for
increasing range of movement, raisingthe heart rate and learning calming sequences that aid concentration andare good for relieving anxiety. The classes interweave the essence
of yoga through everything we do: honouring the goal of yoga which is tostill the fluctuating waves of the mind, tofind the calm, quiet space within and toheal by uniting body, breath and mind.They end with a guided relaxation
practice which provides the tools tocope with the symptoms and triggers ofanxiety, stress and depression, all ofwhich are so common nowadays, perhaps particularly in those who havefaced difficult challenges in life or areliving with life-limiting conditions.

THIS is an essential bookfor teachers and seriousstudents alike, with lovelyasana illustrations. It begins with a brief
outline of the history ofYoga, then explores itsmodern roots and gives information on some of themore popular styles. Subtle energy including
chakras and Prana arealso covered in the firstquarter of the book. Thenthe mainstay of the book isdedicated to other subjectsincluding anatomy, detailing how the asanasaffect the muscles and
joints, not normally foundin other anatomy books.A chapter called techniques and tools inteaching yoga, is full ofuseful information on language and methods ofteaching and giving adjustments. It includes little gems like“Before teaching an asanato your class, teach it toyourself first”The following three
chapters concern theteaching of asanas,
pranayama and meditation.Sequencing and planning
classes is a very usefulchapter, with templatesprovided and then classsequences for the morepopular styles of yoga. Atthe end of the book are appendices with how topronounce the Sanskritnames - very useful if youare like me and terriblewith any language.

Foundation Module 2018
For 30 years RYE (Research on Yoga in Education) has been working with educators around the world developing techniques & skills to enhance the learning
environment within the classroom for both teachers and students.
The RYE Foundation Module offers training in simple, fun & interactive Yoga techniques adapted for the classroom for children 3 - 18yrs. Research shows that these techniques can improve
concentration, focus & self-esteem, promoting effective learning.
The module is open to school teachers, trainee teachers, teaching assistants and
special needs teachers; also to therapists (play / art / speech / occupational), Yoga teachers who are working with children and to parents.
Participants need to be working with children. Prior experience of yoga is helpful but not a requirement for the course.
Course fee : £390.00 (includes all course material & RYE certificate)
