4 The Oakleaf JUNE/JULY 2018

Oh, Summer! We just enjoyed the honor of celebrating a great group of children graduating from our two VPK classes, and advanced our younger children up to the next class level. Soon we will be welcoming brand new friends to Oakland Presbyterian Preschool for the 2018-19 school year! In the meantime, we get to enjoy seeing many of our old friends, as well as our current students, during Summer Shorts. We also look forward to VBS and enjoying fellowship with many of our past and present Preschool friends. It is always fun to see our friends during the relaxed months of summer!

From the Preschool Director, Laurie Templin

The Jesus Storybook Bible Gifted to VPK Graduates

Every story whispers his name … Every year at our VPK graduation ceremony, each child is gifted a new Bible from the Preschool, presented to them by Pastor Bob. This year, a new book was chosen - The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones. This award winning book includes an audio CD narrated by an Emmy-award winning actor. The Jesus Storybook Bible helps children discover how all the stories in the Bible are telling one big story: the story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them.

2018-2019 Availability This year, enrollment for the next school year was full almost before we could even open up registration. One parent referred to registering for VPK in our ever-growing area as “The Hunger Games of VPK.” As of June, our total enrollment for next year is at capacity with 75 children. We do have a waitlist that we will use should any families wind up moving or making a different decision for next year. We are feeling blessed to have such a strong reputation in our community, and lucky to have such wonderful teachers working with us. We are grateful to our Preschool parents and caregivers for trusting us with their most precious assets - their children!

JUNE/JULY 2018 7 The Oakleaf

At this time we wish to express our sympathy to Brian Martin and his family. Brian’s grandfather, Robert Damron, passed away recently in Jacksonville, FL. Brian, you and your family are in our prayers.

“A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty.”

- Ziad Abdelnour Happy Father’s Day to all our dads and granddads. May God guide you every day as you strive to raise your children and teach them the ways of Christ. We are thankful for you!

From the Pastor Recently I’ve been going through things in my office and getting rid of stuff that is just taking up space (much to our Secretary’s delight). If you’ve ever been in my study, you know that I tend to save things. My rationale is that one never knows when you may need whatever it is you decide to keep. And occasionally I find that to be true.

But more often, as I go through the stuff I’ve saved, I wonder why I bothered to save this item. And when was the last time I really used it?

For example, I had a bunch of cassette tapes (some were music and some were recordings of sermons I preached years ago), but I no longer have any equipment that will play those tapes. They are useless. And really, even if I had the equipment, when am I going to listen to sermons I have preached years ago?

So, I made the decision to throw away many of those items that were just taking up space. And I will confess that though there was a moment or two of regret, there was a stronger feeling of liberation. I no longer have to make space for these things that weren’t adding any value to my life.

In a similar way, we often save and hold on to memories and feelings about things that happened in the past that don’t do us any good. We hold on to the memories of when people hurt us, or when life disappointed us, or when we let ourselves down. And holding on to these wounds won’t do us any good. They simply take up emotional space in our lives.

So, maybe we all ought to do a little spring cleaning in our hearts and minds and let go of those things that aren’t doing us any good. Of course, that’s another way of talking about forgiveness. When we forgive ourselves and those who have hurt us, we make room for the good things God has in store for us, the good things God wants us to enjoy.

Who is it that you need to forgive? That’s a “spring cleaning” task that we should all embrace.

Still working on getting rid of stuff that’s just taking up space,

Pastor Bob

Clear-Headed Faith Most often … worry is a lack of confidence in life, in its purpose, in God. Faith in life, in God, is native to the human spirit. … Worry is faith in reverse. Not only because most of the things we are anxious over never come to pass, but also because, when we worry, the most obvious things to do in our situation are overlooked. We should relax our tension by trusting God and putting at the disposal of that trust a clear head. - Howard Thurman, Deep Is the Hunger
