MAKE THIS THE SUMMER

WELCOME TO BRIGHTON OPEN AIR

THEATRE’S 2017 SEASON

2017 will be BOAT’s biggest season yet. With over 100 days and nights of theatre, music, spoken word and lots of comedy.

BOAT is delighted to announce that we have been joined by critically acclaimed comedian and writer Simon Evans as the first ever BOAT Patron. Simon says: “An open air theatre is so utterly Brighton, so entirely something that Brighton should have. I hope I can do the theatre, and Brighton, and Adrian’s hopes for it, proud.”

Simon hosts two Edinburgh Potted Previews as well as Barking! - Brighton’s first dog-friendly stand-up comedy show, featuring Zoe Lyons and Phil Jerrod (and their dogs). The laughs continue with John Hegley’s Wordship Workshop, and The Seaside Honeypot Funnypot Spectacular; Perrier-Nominated comedian Jo Neary brings together Dyball & Kerr, George Egg, Phil Jerrod, and Jim Bob (from Carter USM) to raise funds for the Honeypot Children’s Charity.

Theatre remains the mainstay of BOAT’s programme. We welcome back many companies, schools and community organisations from last year as well as some new faces. Shakespeare is well represented with The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Romeo & Juliet, Othello, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Richard III, Macbeth, The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Comedy of Errors. Classics return in the shape of Don Quixote, Emma, Jane Eyre,

Blue Remembered Hills, She Stoops to Conquer, Pride and Prejudice and The Importance Of Being Earnest. For visceral thrills don’t miss Animal Farm, Earthquakes In London and The Plain Dealer.

An array of family and children’s shows will grace BOAT’s green stage this summer. Dinosaur fans should check out The Lost World. There’s adventure with Peter Pan, and Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. Very small children will love The Smartest Giant in Town and The Princess and the Pig. Award-winning inclusive theatre company Brightonshed stage the world première of Wake Up Alice! Finally, The Wind in the Willows promises to be a very special treat.

Whatever your musical taste, BOAT’s sure to have something to satiate the palate. Internationally renowned instrumentalists Richard Durrant and Ismael Ledesma perform in June. As does Lebanese violinist Layale Chaker and Sarafand Ensemble. There’s Jazz in the Park. Opera lovers will welcome Heritage Opera’s Così Fan Tutte. There’s Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado and sea shanties in Songs from the Seas. The Poets take on the MCs in both Once and Future and The Poetry Picnic. There are tributes to Cole Porter and The Alter Eagles. And of course The Brighton Beach Boys are back. Look out for Dearly Departed their celebration of the legends of music who passed away in 2016.

BOAT reached big audiences and critical acclaim in 2016, hitting both The Tatler and The Guardian’s Top 5 list of UK open-air venues. 2017 promises to be even better. So pack your picnic, grab your friends and ‘Make This The Summer’ you experience the wonder of Brighton Open Air Theatre.

D.A.F.T. SHAKESPEARE IN A DAY

William Wycherley’s wicked and dark comedy The Plain Dealer is a forgotten masterpiece. Bawdy, licentious and as pertinent now as when it was written.

Manly has a passion for fair play, and plain-speaking Olivia is his girl, but when she is disloyal and corrupt Manly wants revenge!

From this contrast between truth speakers and feigners a monstrous picture of society grows.

Probably your only chance to see this glorious cavalcade, so don’t miss it!

“The secret of life is honesty and plain dealing. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” Groucho Marx.

Following the success of last year’s Cymbeline and Pericles, D.A.F.T return to BOAT to bring another Shakespeare play from the page to stage in one day.

Led by director Nicholas Quirke this script-in-hand performance will be as much of a surprise to the actors as the audience.

Enjoy an exploration of text, character and staging that will yield some fresh, spontaneous and unexpected results.

“Nicholas Quirke did a brilliant job to bring the best out of his actors and to bring the action to life.” The Argus

In 2016 the Lifeboat inaugural event was such an extraordinary success Brighton Open Air Theatre has taken the decision to make it an annual occurrence. LIFEBOAT 2 brings together voices from across our community in Sing Out, which promises to be a foot stomping, spine-tingling afternoon of songful celebration – an uplifting and transformative event full of harmony and community cohesion. 2017 welcomes local and nationally renowned Choral Activist Kirsty Martin to BOAT to lead a massed choral collective made up from members of Hullabaloo Quire, RISE Up Singing, Brighton Tubthumpers, UpRoar People’s Choir, BREMF, Singing for Sanctuary and Raise the Roof (London’s Horniman Museum’s Choir)…. Newmans Voices and Newman’s Chamber Choir will be making their BOAT debut from Cardinal Newman, (our nearest secondary school) invigorating the afternoon with their fresh take on pop and classical songs.

Every penny raised from LIFEBOAT 2 will be supporting two exceptional local charities Rise and Speak Out each of whom gives a voice to vulnerable people. Rise offer sanctuary and support and do vital work running our only local domestic abuse helpline. Money raised will help to provide refuge accommodation for women and families in danger. In addition to this it will fund work in schools, teaching children about healthy relationships.

Brighton and Hove Speak Out support local people with learning disabilities to have a voice. Money raised will go towards funding regular ‘Drop Ins’, where people can get help to solve problems or just meet and make friends.

So clamber aboard the Lifeboat, warm up your cockles and your vocal chords, sing along with our grand finale and help us raise some funds by raising the roof (if only we had one!)

BRIGHTON LITTLE THEATRE EARTHQUAKES IN LONDON

Part hilarious part chilling; Dennis Potter’s modern classic Blue Remembered Hills is set during a seemingly endless summer afternoon in impoverished WW2 Forest of Dean.

The Children (all played by adults) expose harsh themes through their free-fall, wild and unrestrained play. Relationships mimicking the adult world highlight the casual cruelty of children and how thoughtless actions can result in tragedy.

ILLYRIA THE LOST WORLD

What would happen if anyone should dare to tell the Mikado that an execution had taken place when in fact it hadn’t?

Gilbert & Sullivan’s wry satire of lies twisted into truths has never been more blisteringly relevant!

It gets the complete Illyria treatment: not a word from the libretto is cut nor a note unsung.

Four intrepid explorers travel to an uncharted plateau in South America, and encounter terrifying dinosaurs previously believed to be extinct. But what evidence can they produce to prove that these creatures actually exist? Unless, of course, they bring live specimens back to London.

What could possibly go wrong?

He bares us his soul, unrequited love, animal lovers, facts of life, sibling rivalries and mercy killing are just some of the elements covered in this very funny and bittersweet story, as we discover that both the man and the performance are not quite what they seem.

NOTED FOR MUSIC MY DOG’S GOT NO NOSEODDSOCKS MACBETH

Oddsocks breathe new life into Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet by giving it a musical Mods & Rockers twist! There’s Nowhere to Run To for the Capulets and Montagues as violent confrontation stalks every meeting, even Down in the Tube Station at Midnight.

Meanwhile Juliet’s Nurse is looking forward to a good old Twist and Shout at the Capulet party, which Romeo’s mates are planning to gate-crash. Romeo has his doubts about going to a Capulet Nite Klub but that is where he meets his Juliet, and so It Must Be Love. Maybe, just maybe, The Power of Love will end the families’ violent feud.

Best come and see for yourself!

Shakespeare’s story of ambition turned bad is brought to life in Oddsocks’ hilarious musical adaptation.

Set in a steampunk world; Macbeth and Banquo return triumphantly from the battlefield. They discover 3 weird sisters who predict their promotions. Macbeth’s ambitious Killer Queen wife releases the Devil Within him and soon there’s blood on his hands. Macbeth’s on a killing spree; Don’t Stop Me Now, But You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet revenge is on it’s way. Macbeth fears a Ghost in my House and Lady Macbeth is slipping into a Mad World.

With the audience’s help, Macduff takes on Macbeth and in an explosive battle ensures that Scotland is All Right Now!

THIS IS MY THEATRE THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

Ernest is Jack. Ernest loves Gwendolen but she doesn’t know he’s Jack. Algernon is also Ernest but he loves Cecily. Both Cecily and Gwendolen are particularly fond of the name Ernest, which is good for Ernest but is a problem for both Jack and Algernon. Then there’s Gwendolen’s mother, Algernon’s aunt, Lady Bracknell. She disapproves. Of everything mostly…except cucumber sandwiches…

Oscar Wilde’s classic, performed by just 3 actors, this “Trivial Comedy for Serious People” will be a fast-paced, one-act adaptation that will truly demonstrate, as Algernon/Ernest observes “the truth is rarely pure and never simple.”

To see a rabbit is nothing remarkable… To hear it comment upon the time is!… To follow it down a rabbit-hole into a strange new world not knowing how you’ll get out again is something extraordinarily remarkable indeed!

This is my Theatre invite you to join them for a trip into this well-loved tale, based upon the original novel written by Lewis Carroll and specially adapted for the stage.

With live music and unforgettable characters, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland will engage and delight audiences of all ages.

In April 2013 Brighton playwright, showman and construction manager, Adrian Bunting, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died in May 2013, aged 47. In his final days Adrian threw his efforts into realising a long held ambition; the creation of a permanent open-air theatre for the city he loved. Adrian identified the perfect site, a redundant bowling green in Dyke Road Park, drew up designs and left his life savings of £18,000 to kick-start the project. Shortly before he passed away he asked four friends – Steve Turner, Claire Raftery, James Payne and Donna Close – if they would see his dream through.

BOAT was launched by Adrian’s Mother Isobelle Bunting on the 9th May 2015, almost two years to the day after Adrian passed away.

Since it’s opening in 2015 BOAT has gone from strength to strength and is now well established as part of Brighton and Hove’s cultural landscape. In it’s third year BOAT welcomes 40

different local national and international companies with over 100 performances in the 2017 Season

The BOAT Team has also grown this year with the addition of Lisa Wolfe as a new trustee and Simon Evans as the BOAT Patron.

BOAT’s story touches the hearts of all those who hear it. It is testimony to the power of friendship and collective goodwill. That ‘BOAT spirit’ is perfectly crystallised in the amazing work of its volunteers. Both front of house and backstage they work tirelessly to ensure BOAT remains a magical place to be.

As BOAT’s voyage continues it’s vital that people are encouraged to share in the journey. If you’re interested in being a part of the crew, in any shape or form, please get in touch via [email protected]

If you would like to make a donation that would also be gratefully received.

BOAT WOULD LIKE TO THANKAdrian’s Family, Miller Bourne Architects, BHCC and the Parks Team especially

ABOUT BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE

BUBBLEGUM PARFUM DESERT MY FLOORBOARDS

My Floorboards is a musical performance for an actor and a modular synthesizer, it’s based on the renowned piece of French outside art Le Plancher de Jeannot. This play is not a dramatization of Jeannot’s text, but an attempt to replicate his deliriums and peculiar dynamics by creating an original theatrical experience.

He can be seen as a madman or disillusioned comedian. He’s talking to us and giving us a glimpse of his world, he’s trying to recollect and reconnect the missing pieces of his broken mind, but the lines are blurred and reality is flickering.

BOAT is a registered charity in England and Wales (no. 1156051)
