News from the President
The Federal election has concluded, and we would like to thank all of our members who volunteered and sup-ported the NDP this election. We have a strong NDP caucus led by Jagmeet Singh who will work hard for workers and put people first. In this edition of the newsletter, there are highlights on the Labour Day celebrations in Toronto and Mississauga. We thank all those who joined us for festivities and look for-ward to seeing you again next year. Our local union is looking to start several com-mittees to increase member participation, and educate ourselves on a variety of topics. We are looking to start a Women’s committee, Human Rights committee, and are looking for more people interested in taking part on our Joint Health and Safety committees. Please see inside on how you can get involved. As of July 1st 2019, the minimum basic wage rate in many of our collective agreements went up to $14.26 for those under 5 years seniority, and $14.56 for those 5 years plus in seniority. Please check your respective collective agreement for clarity. We also have included information on worker’s rights, specifically the em-ployer’s duty to accommodate. You can learn through the experience of our finan-cial secretary of what roles and responsibilities you and your employer have when it comes to accommodation in the workplace. We would like to notify our members in Durham region using our dental centres that there is a change in provider in Ajax. You can still get your dental ser-vices closer to home, but through a new dental office location. We would like to inform members that our November Local Meeting is cancelled. We will see you again in December which will also be our yearly holiday party. Tuesday December 17th at 11am and 5:30pm, please join us for lunch at our 25 Cecil office, and dinner at our Aerowood office. We will be celebrating the sea-son, with raffle prizes, good food and friends. In solidarity, Julia Rodriguez President USW Local 5296

HEALTH AND SAFETY REPRESENTATIVE POSITIONS
As per the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the United Steelworkers Local 5296 is
working to establish a Multi-Workplace Joint Health and Safety Committee with each of
our employers. Each workplace with twenty (20) or more employees is required to estab-
lish a Joint Health and Safety Committee.
Being a Health & Safety representative is an opportunity to develop leadership skills,
grow one’s activism, and be able to take part in learning opportunities.
Committee members will be required to do the following:
• Identify actual and potential hazards in the workplace; • Obtain information from the employer relating to health and safety in the workplace; • Inspect the workplace on a regular basis; • Participate in any health and safety-related testing in the workplace; • Recommend health and safety improvements in the workplace.
Designated Health and Safety Worker Representatives will be provided the necessary training to adequately perform the tasks delegated to them.
All time spent by Committee members in connection with attending Committee meetings or performing duties prescribed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act will be consid-ered as time at work. Committee members will be paid at the appropriate rate of pay; not less than four (4) hours call-in pay, plus one (1) hour preparation time. All Health and Safety Worker Representatives will be chosen by the Union. Any person(s)
with prior health and safety experience are encouraged to apply.
If you are interested in participating the Health and Safety Committee at your site, please
contact your Local Union Representative or email your interest to:

Duty to Accommodate
USW Local 5296 Financial Secretary Parvinder Kaur attended the Steelworkers Duty to Accommodate course this passed June. Duty to accommodate for employers is an obligation whereby employers have to make a good faith effort to accommodate employees on the basis of protect-ed grounds which includes disability, religion and pregnancy leave in order to prevent discrimination. Employers and service providers have an obligation to adjust rules, policies or practices to enable em-ployees to fully participate. Someone can not be judged incapable of performing the essential duties or requirements of a job, of being a tenant, or taking part in a service, without efforts to accommodate the person to point of undue hardship.
