To Empower and Inspire All in the Pursuit of Excellence

It is hard to believe how quickly this year has passed as we suddenly reached the end of the 2015-2016 school year. It has been an exciting year!

With the addition of 750 Chromebooks purchased by the district this year, our ability to assess and monitor our students quickly has resulted

in more classroom instruction time. I am proud of the growth that our students have shown over the past school year. Preliminary results of the Smarter Balanced State Assessment show that our students have made significant growth in each of our grade levels and subject areas.

The district is fortunate to have made many accomplishments during the 2015-2016 school year. The following are just a few that are worthy of recognition: Moxee Elementary School received the 2015-2016 State School of Distinction Award and the Washington Achievement Award for continuous growth in student academic achievement over the past three years, the new sports complex and concession stand adjacent to East Valley Elementary School has been completed, enhanced security systems have been installed in our schools to provide greater protection for our students and staff, continued growth in school enrollment has resulted in 3100 students attending our schools, and voters approved a $52.9 million bond to expand and renovate portions of East Valley High School, expand East Valley Central Middle School, and provide for more parking at Moxee Elementary School. Ongoing efforts with architects and engineers will complete the design stages of our bond projects and we will soon begin the building phase of the major projects.

As we prepare for the 2016-2017 school year our primary focus will remain on improving teaching and learning for every child, in every school and in every classroom throughout the East Valley School District. We will continue to make effective budgeting decisions to maximize the use of our funds to provide the best education possible for our students.

As the 2015-2016 school year closes, I want to personally thank each of you for your continued support for the East Valley School District as we continue to make a significant difference in the lives of each of our students.

Sincerely,

John J. Schieche, Superintendent

The Washington State Achievement Award recognizes schools and educators making a difference in student outcomes. Award recipients are schools that have made measurable progress helping students prepare for college, career, and life. The Washington Achievement Awards Ceremony was held on May 10, 2016 at Union Gap School in Yakima. The East Valley School District is proud of Moxee Elementary School for being recognized with a State Wide Achievement Award in the category of Math Growth. Congratulations to Moxee Elementary staff and students for their hard work and extra efforts in promoting continued success in the area of math. The award process uses the Revised Achievement Index and the award is based on statewide assessment data for the three previous years. As an award winner, Moxee Elementary received a display banner and an acrylic award to proudly display in their building.

Wishing the East Valley School District Retirees Best Wishes

2016-17 was the adoption cycle year for the new K-12 English/Language Arts materials as part of the EVSD Strategic Plan. With educational expectations continually changing, it is essential that the district provide our staff and students with the most up to date materials available in order to meet the individual needs of our students.

Each educational content area is on a seven-year adoption cycle. The ELA selection committee was busy throughout the past year reviewing materials using the Instructional Materials Evaluation Tool (IMET) that has been designed to help educators determine whether instructional materials are aligned with the shift of instruction that demands a strong focus on the standards, coherence across the grade levels, and rigor in the major topics that pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with intensity. The long, tedious task by the K-12 selection committee began last fall and resulted in the adoption of the new ELA K-12 instructional materials by the EV School Board this spring.

East Valley is fortunate to have the adoption of instructional materials included in the district levy money approved by our voting patrons. The new materials have arrived at each building and have been distributed to teachers accordingly. On June 15th all district ELA teachers gathered for professional training using the newly adopted materials. The teachers are excited about the recent adoption and are eager to use it in the classroom with their students. Thanks to your levy dollars, the new materials have arrived and are ready for use when school starts this fall! Thanks for your continued support!

Thank You EVSD Patrons...Your Levy Dollars at work!

East Valley National Honor Society Students are selected based on their leadership, their character, and their service. Students must have a 3.5 GPA to qualify to apply for the program and this year’s group had 51 participating members. Juniors and seniors that meet the GPA requirement receive an invitation letter in August and once notified, the NHS group hosts an annual induction of new members into the National Honor Society. As new members, they participate in a ropes course that helps build unity and leadership for the group.

The East Valley National Honor Society contributed a total of 2170 hours of service in our community this year. Their activities positively contribute to the students, staff, and community of East Valley. They had many group projects

this year that included the annual food drive for the East Valley

Pantry and Operation Harvest. They also spent time planting

the flowers at Terrace Heights Park (an annual event) with the donations coming from the East Valley Horticulture classes and FFA. The group sponsored an anti-bullying prevention program titled “Dude Be Nice” in March as well as posting signs for our school levy with some members also helping to set up for the school Knowledge Bowl. The group of students hosted a school wide thank you letter-writing event and presented those letters to staff during staff appreciation week. National Honor Society club hosted the annual Senior Awards breakfast for the 2016 East Valley HS graduating class.

Each student must pick a service project and volunteer a minimum of 15 verified hours. Calculating the hours for the students included the independent projects: Mr. East Valley, the East Valley Firefighters spaghetti feed, Terrace Heights Civic Center, Youthworks, the

Fellowship of Christian Athletes, St Joes, the EV ROTC program, East Valley Elementary, Children’s Village, the Capitol Theatre, Franklin gym, Lifesavers, East Valley Foursquare Church, Habitat for Humanity, and the Sundome as just some examples of the programs that benefitted from NHS leaders volunteering their time to help.

The East Valley officers this year were: Jutsely Rivera as President, Kaitlyn Dykstra as Vice President, Denisse Guerrero as Secretary, Jacob Sanderson as Treasurer, Biridiana Rodriguez as Historian, and Chloe Skahan as Activities Director, and Dawn Young, EVHS School Counselor.

An annual public presentation of the award is part of the EVSD graduation award ceremony. Retired East Valley School District Educator Barry Reifel nominated Dave Cullen for the award for his 15 years of support for student athletes across the district! Dottie Say, principal of EVHS, shared “He has touched the lives of so many East Valley students. His tireless efforts to be sure that every athletic event happens without a hitch, to monitor the academic progress of all athletes, and to help build character in both our coaches and athletes are much appreciated. Dave is respected by all those having had the opportunity to work with him. He is truly the man behind the scenes making it all work. Thanks Dave!”

Congratulations East Valley Class of 2016!

It was an exciting evening for students, staff, parents, families, and friends at the East Valley High School’s 2016 commencement ceremony at the Yakima Sun Dome on June 11th. Dressed in traditional black and white graduation caps and gowns, 183 seniors stepped up to the podium to receive their diplomas from the East Valley School Board members.

During the ceremony Superintendent, John Scheiche recognized the Distinguished Scholars from the EVHS class of 2016 and their parents for having the top GPA’s. Co-Valedictorians for the class were Jacob Sanderson and Tanner Schilperoort, who completed their high school careers with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Kylie Gutierrez, Salutatorian, finished high school with a 3.991 grade point average. The co-valedictorians and the salutatorian

were senior speakers for their graduating class.

A senior memory slide show created by seniors, Karyna Foia and Taylor Manrique, was one of the sentimental highlights for everyone during the ceremony. Seniors Bailey Abbott, Gabrielle Charles, and Stefan Panatex performed the spectacular vocal, “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” It has been an annual tradition to publicly present the Crystal Apple Award during the graduation

ceremony. This year, Barry Reifel introduced and gave public recognition to Dave Cullen, the 2016 Crystal Apple Award recipient. Dave reciprocated by thanking the Crystal Apple committee, made reference to the school motto, “Spirit, Pride, and Excellence”, and then led the audience in some East Valley cheers. The EVHS school counselors, Wendy Ross and Dawn Young, had the privilege of announcing the class of 2016 scholarship recipients. At the conclusion of the ceremony, senior class president, Biridiana Rodriguez led the class n the tradition of turning the tassel to signify that they were now graduates. You did it!

In coming East Valley Kindergarten students were screened on June 16th & 17th at their home school in preparation for the beginning of school this August. This kindergarten screening will provide entry-level data for the child’s kindergarten teacher for use in determining student needs for the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.

EVSD Student Immunization Requirements

Washington state law RCW 28A.210.080 requires all children to have the proper immunization records for certain vaccine-preventable diseases in order to attend school. Skipping vaccinations or missing vaccine doses makes it more likely that your child can get sick or give an illness to another child.

East Valley has taken a firm stand by requiring the necessary immunizations for all students attending school. Please note that if you fail to provide the district proof of the newly required 2016-17 immunizations in accordance with state law, your child will be excluded from starting and attending school in the Fall 2016-17 until the district has received the following:1. A current immunization record from your

healthcare provider with the Certificate of Immunization Status showing that your child has received any current and/or missing vaccine(s); OR

2. A Certificate of Exemption signed by your healthcare provider showing you have a medical, religious, or personal reason for not vaccinating your child.

Please note that RCW 28A.210.090 now requires the certificate of exemption to be signed by your healthcare provider.Kindergarten entry requires:

• 5 doses of Dtap (required K-12) • 3 doses of Hepatitis B (required K-12) • 2 doses MMR or MMRV (required K-12) • 2 doses Varicella – Chicken pox (required K-12) • 4 doses of Polio vaccine (required K-12)

All 6th grade students and students grades 7th – 12th are required to have proof of the Tdap vaccination.

Starting this coming 2016-17 school year, all students in grades K-12 are required by law to have 2 doses of the chicken pox (varicella) vaccine or obtain a letter from a licensed healthcare provider to verify that your student has had chicken pox disease in the past. (Please note that the two doses must be at least 28 days apart so plan accordingly before the beginning of the new school year).

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the district office at 573-7300.

Terrace Heights Elementary 5th grade Marimba band’s concert was held on Monday, June 13th, 2016. The unique marimba sounds filled the gym and held the attention of the audience. The marimba is a percussion instrument consisting of a set of wooden bars struck with mallets to produce musical tones. The instrument was developed in Central America by African slaves and is now the national instrument of Guatemala. Contemporary composers have used the unique sound of the marimba more and more in recent years.

Doug Carey, Terrace Heights Elementary music teacher, has improved the school’s marimba instruments over the past 16 years

that he has been in the district. The first school marimba instruments became out of tune so everything needed to be refurbished. It has

been a somewhat slow process, but with grant money and district levy money, and enabling the help of local marimba builder, Mr. Johnson, over the years Doug has been able to improve and upgrade the TH Maribima Band instruments to its current capacity. There

were 33 fifth grade students that performed amazingly on the assorted marimba instruments throughout the evening concert. The TH Marimba Band is an impressive addition to the Terrace Heights music department. A program enjoyed by all!
