Summer 2015

S ll Under Construc on

Spring has come and at my house we are covered in construc on dust and chaos. My dream of downsizing is becoming reality as my husband and I "make over" a town home to be just what we want. The process has been messy, a bit unpredictable and frus-tra ng at mes. However, I can see the vision coming togeth-er. It is beau ful.

The WILS organiza on has been similar this year as I have been president. I have big dreams. Dreams of an organiza on that brings women in our field together to be strong and to have fun. An amazing network of professionals suppor ng each other and growing our field to be er serve our communi es. 80 years as an organi-za on brings a strong founda on. It's a history of trend se ers and tenacious women leading the way.

But our work as a board and an organiza on is not done as we need to adapt and evolve with the needs of our members. Our celebra on this spring is of expanding into the state of Illinois, thanks to the efforts of Jan Hincapie, Allison Brammer and our newest sisters in the Chicago area, Chapter Chi.

Our challenge comes in keeping our other chapters alive, vibrant and relevant. This is the me for members to step up to volunteer to make a difference in WILS. All chapters are in need of volunteers to serve on board and commi ees. There is also opportunity for service on the Na onal Board.

I see the next year of WILS to be similar to our house remod-el. The end result is a strengthened, remodeled organiza on that con nues the vision and mission of WILS. The process to get there will take work from commi ed members who aren't afraid to stretch a bit and work through the "sawdust" to keep strong and important for the future. Let's do this!

Purple Ribbon Committee Update

WILS National Board Accepts New Chapter

At the National Board meeting last spring, the board voted to accept the Chi Kappa Rho – Chi Chapter into the WILS organiza-tion. The Chi chapter is made up of recreation professionals from the Greater Chicago, Illinois area (hence their request to have Chi as their name.) When they meet to install officers, the WILS National President will attend to offer an official welcome and complete the officer installation. Jan Hincapie has been leading this effort ever since she met Delta member Eileen Turk at an NRPA conference several years ago. Jan is the Director of Parks and Recreation of the Village of Lincolnwood, a suburb of Chicago. Stay tuned as this new chapter begins their jour-ney. Once again, congratulations and we welcome WILS to Illi-nois!

A Smile

It cost nothing —-it is worth much.

You are richer by giving it away.

It takes but a moment to give but the memory lasts a lifetime.

No one is so rich that he can get along without it.

No one is so poor but that he can be made rich by it.

It brings rest to the weary—-strength to the weak—-sunshine to the sad.

It cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen.

It is of no value until given away.

If someone fails to give you a smile, give them one of yours for no one needs a smile as much as

he who has one to give.

What is a Customer?

A customer is the most important person in a business.

A customer is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him.

A customer is not an interruption of our work. He is the purpose of it.

A customer does us a favor when he comes in. We aren’t doing him a favor by waiting on him.

A customer is part of our business-not an outsider. A cus-tomer is not just money in the cash register. He is a hu-

man being with feelings and deserves to be treated with respect.

A customer is a person who comes to us with his needs and his wants. It is our job to fill them

A customer deserves the most courteous attention we can give him. He is the life-blood of this and every business.

He pays your salary. Without him, we would have to close our doors. Don’t ever forget it.

Challenge Yourself to Find New Ideas

By in2vate, copyright 2015 publica on

You’ve got to produce something fresh, new and crea ve—and nothing is com-

ing. Crea vity can be difficult some mes, but here are some ideas for sparking

your imagina on and keeping it alive:

Limit yourself. Some mes having a wide variety of tools at your finger ps

can overwhelm your brain. Try building in a self-imposed obstacle only

pain ng with one color, for example, or applying ruthless, righteous altera-

on to your wri ng.

S ck to schedule. Inspira on will find you more easily if it knows when to

look. That means adhering to a rou ne—a regular me and place for your

crea ve work so your mind gets used to searching for ideas on a predicta-

ble basis.

Accept mistakes. Perfec on is a worthy goal, but don’t obsess over it. Give

yourself permission to try things even if you’re not sure they’ll succeed.

O en you’ll stumble across a different strategy or a be er path along the

way.

Brainstorm. Try this technique: Define your problem in one sentence. Then

go to a dic onary, open it at random, and point to a word. Look for solu-

ons and approaches that incorporate that word somehow. You’ll focus

your thinking more effec vely.

The National Board wishes each of you a fun and fantastic summer!!!
