It’s back to school season again! What a great time of year for kids to contin-

ue their education, and more importantly for parents to have a break from

the summer activities. Back to school was always a favorite time for me. I

was excited to see my classmates, and moreover I got to go shopping for

school supplies and clothes. The summer is such a fun time for students and

parents alike. While we tend to have a summer full of activities and vaca-

tions, it is always great to spend time with family and friends.

Back to school season is a great example of instilling the belief in continuing

education into our children. Each year is another opportunity to learn more

and gain more skills. This is something that continues throughout your life-

time. I am constantly learning new information, skills or improving on my

existing skillset. Vernon Howard once said “Always walk through life as if

you have something new to learn and you will.”

That is one facet of LOMA and the LOMA Society that I love so much. The

continuing education I get from either taking a new LOMA course (like the

SRI series that is being launched) or the skills I build while attending one of

our events. We just had the Wine & Cheese event this month and it was a

great event. We had six panelists that gave little mini-presentations on dif-

ferent soft skills. It was wonderful to hear the panelist’s discussions.

I am looking forward to our seminar that is coming up on September 30th. It

is going to be on the Science of Strength Finders. This will be a great, person-

alized, training session on how to identify and capitalize on your strengths. I

am really excited to have our full day seminar at Woodmen and learn from

Caren Dean about what strengths I can harness in my professional career.

Hopefully now that school is once again upon us, we can all take the time to

learn a little more about ourselves and continue to learn through LOMA. I

hope to see each of you at the seminar on the 30th!

SPRING DINNER MEETING, MAY 14, 2015

On Thursday, May 14, the LOMA society of Nebraska held it’s Spring Dinner Meeting

at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln, NE.

The evening began with a social hour reception followed by a buffet style dinner. Fol-

lowing dinner, President, Carrie Michielutti opened the meeting and announced 3

open board positions – Audit, VP and Membership Director.

After some door prizes were awarded, Carrie introduced the two speakers for the

evening:

Pat Haverty, Vice-President— Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development

David Brown, President & CEO— Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce

Both men spoke about current events and initiatives within their respective cities.

They spoke of the future growth of each city and how the Chamber is helping move

the communities forward. The fun and playful competiveness between them

(“competing” chambers –Lincoln vs. Omaha) made for a very upbeat meeting!

The board met before the membership meeting and decided the seminar will be a full

day workshop held at Woodmen in Omaha and will focus on skill building. Addition-

ally, Vice

President,

Christina

Bentley,

will facili-

tate and

coordinate

the Wine

and

Cheese

event and

is working

on content.

2015 ANNUAL LOMA SEMINAR

Most people have a hard

time describing their

strengths. And we aren’t

talking about your

knowledge or your skills –

we’re talking about your

core personality traits that

make them stand out.

On the other hand, identi-

fying weaknesses is all too

easy. It’s true. We have been trained to know our weaknesses and to

focus on correcting them. From when we first enter school to now

performing our job duties, we spend WAY more time trying to fix

what we’re not good at, rather than on our natural talents.

Strengths-based development and leadership is unique in that it

builds on one’s areas of greatest potential, rather than seeking to

invest in weakness areas. There’s nothing wrong with being aware of

your weaknesses and managing them, but your greatest opportunity

for success lies in building on your natural talents – not in fixing

your weaknesses.

We will be doing our LOMA Annual Seminar on September 30th.

During this time we will have the opportunity to learn more about

the Science of Strength Finders and its application to you and your

organization. The seminar will be providing more personalized

training on Strength Finders. The registration fee will also include

the book, materials, and the code to take the personalized assess-

ment.

Once you send in your registration you will be given a book with a

code for the assessment. Please complete the assessment and for-

ward the results to Caren Dean by September 4th at

[email protected]. On the day of the training please bring a copy

of your reports.

Quick tip: The assessment is time sensitive so when you take it,

eliminate distractions and don’t overthink your responses, go with

your gut. It should take you about 30 minutes to complete. If you

have previously taken the Strength Finders assessment, you can

email your results directly to Caren Dean.

AUGUST WINE AND CHEESE MEETING

On Thursday, August, 13, 2015, the Nebraska LOMA Socie-

ty held it’s ever popular Wine and Cheese Meeting at Soar-

ing Wings Vineyard. The scenery of the local and the beau-

tiful weather were unbeatable. To begin the evening, guests

were invited to enjoy a house made glass of wine or beer

and dine on a delicious spread of food.

After dinner, President, Carrie Michielutti, opened the

meeting with the following announcements. The Society

currently has two open board positions – Audit and VP.

Additionally, we are close to getting our 100th Linked in

member for our Society page. A prize will be given to the

100th subscriber (Michelle Spevak was the 100th join that

night!). The Annual seminar will be held 9/30 at Woodmen.

It will be a full day and the fee will be $75. Three Board

members will attend the 2015 LOMA Conference- Jennifer,

Carrie and

Christina. Dell is sponsoring the trip for Jennifer and Carrie and LOMA is sponsoring a majority

of Christina’s expenses. Additionally, the board needs ideas for volunteering events, particularly

in the Omaha area.

The main event for the meeting was a round table activity focused on building Soft Skills. There

were 6 Soft Skill subject matter experts who each led a table on a different soft skill. After Society

Rep, Christina Bentley, gave an introduction on Soft Skills, explained the activity and introduced

guest to the table leaders, participants spent 7 minutes at each table and then circled through all

of the speakers throughout the room.

We have a new Membership Director.

Dottie Hamilton with Woodmen has

joined the board and accepted the

position of membership director. Jen-

nifer will be supporting Dottie in mov-

ing in to this new role.

declining membership and meeting

attendance. Diana will be reviewing

participation rates of current mem-

bers. Carrie suggested sending sur-

veys to current members. LOMA’s

(Barbara Francis) will be sending an

email to designees with a link to “find

a society near you” and will link to our site for the region.

Annual seminar will be held 9/30/15. This year will be a full day seminar beginning at 8:30a.m. at Woodmen.

They will validate parking. We will serve continental breakfast and full lunch – checking in to Woodmen ca-

tering service, Steve can get us a quote.

book with an access code to take the strengths finder. Caren passed out a flier to all attendees at the wine and

NEBRASKA LOMA SOCIETY GROUP ON LINKEDIN

LinkedIn is a great way for professionals to stay connected and network. Networking and staying connected

plays a huge role in our society today, and also within the LOMA Society

of Nebraska. We have our Nebraska LOMA Society group on LinkedIn to

stay connected with our membership. Just this past month we received

our 100th member to our LinkedIn group! Michelle Spevak became the

100th person to sign up for our group and has won a special gift as a

thank you for staying connected to the Society through social media.

Even if you are not an avid social media fan or part of the millennial gen-

eration, LinkedIn is a wonderful tool for working professionals. It allows

you to network virtually, find new opportunities and find out what your

colleagues are doing in their professional areas. If you haven’t done so

already go out to www.linkedin.com and search for the Nebraska LOMA

Society group. It’s a wonderful way to stay connected with our society and

our upcoming events!
