Summer is rapidly flying by and hopefully, you are able to spend
some time at Kinder Farm Park by walking or running the trails, and
participating in a variety of events held at the park. Did you see the
Antique Tractor Club at the Annual Severna Park Fourth of July
Parade with members of the 4H and Park Deli riding in the wagons?
Thank you to all those who came out for the unveiling of the Flag
Dedication and Buy a Brick program. The ceremony involved a
Ladies Trio from Severna Park High School who sang our National
Anthem and Paul Downey led an honor guard presentation of the US
Flag to the Park while the Rangers raised the flag. The potluck picnic
inside Harvest Hall was very festive and the food was excellent.
Thank you to everyone, who came out to support our events either as a participant or a volunteer. Kinder Farm
Park is very lucky to have a dedicated group of volunteers who give tirelessly of their time and efforts. The
accomplishments of the Friends of Kinder Farm Park are due to the volunteers, so thank you very much.
“No one who achieves success does so without acknowledging the help of others. The wise and confident acknowledge this help with gratitude.” ~Author Unknown
Friends of Kinder Farm Park are very busy preparing for a couple of large projects this October. The first is our
annual Fall Harvest Festival on October 11, which requires hundreds of volunteers. You can help with the
planning of the event by attending the planning meetings on the 4th
Wednesday of each month. This year we are
introducing a brand new exciting event, the Zombie 5K Fun Run on October 31, this involves volunteers to
help with planning, registrations, advertising, supervision of the event, etc. With all these activities, I am asking
you to get involved with their planning and execution. Please join us for our planning meetings, bring your
ideas and enthusiasm for these events. Looking ahead to December, we cannot forget the Jingle Bell hayride,

which is a favorite community event.
“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”~Elizabeth Andrew
The friends of Kinder Farm Park are looking forward to seeing you at many of our upcoming events and we
hope you will find a way to support our events either as a participant or a volunteer. See you down on the
Farm!

On Sunday, June 14th
, Flag Day, the Friends held a dedication ceremony for our new flag and flagpole located
just outside of the Visitors Center. In addition, we presented the unveiling of the initial installation of bricks
from our “Buy a Brick” program which surround the flagpole.
With about 100 people in attendance on the hot and steamy day, an honor guard led by one of our outstanding
volunteers, Paul Downey, presented the flag to Rangers Kevin Keller and Nolley Fisher, who promptly raised it
in official fashion. This was followed by a few words from our president, Laurie Kinnamon, and then a
beautiful, moving, acapella rendition of the national anthem by a trio of female singers from Severna Park High
School.
Immediately afterward, we all joined in the air-conditioned Harvest Hall to enjoy a potluck dinner and join in
conversation at the family-style set-up. Entrees and many desserts were provided courtesy of Eddy
Tinnivlioglou from Park Deli on Benfield Boulevard. Of course, we had more food than anyone could possibly
consume, but we gave it a good try!
It was a wonderful afternoon of meaningful memories, renewed and new friendships and good food.
Please stop by to see the new brick pavement and decide where you would like your brick to be placed. Order
forms for payment by check are available on the Friends web site at www.kinderfarmpark.org, as well as in the
Visitors Center. If you wish to pay by credit card, you may follow the link on the web page. This is your
opportunity to leave a lasting legacy at Kinder Farm Park while also supporting the work of the Friends of
Kinder Farm Park to make it the best in the county.
Our sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the event. And please, do not forget to stop by and support
Park Deli!

Monitoring bluebird boxes is a lot of fun! Every week, I visit the boxes assigned to me. I sometimes bring my
granddaughter, who really enjoys opening the boxes and counting eggs. Other times I have led participants on
my Family Bird Walks through my bluebird box trail. Park visitors also stop and ask me questions about what I
am doing. The wonder and fascination from adults and kids alike is enough to keep me at this volunteer activity
for a long time!
Bluebirds are not the only birds using the boxes. Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmouse, House Wrens, and
Tree Swallows also use these manmade nesting cavities. When I visit a box, I record my findings on a data
sheet provided by the park: type of nest, how many eggs, development of hatchlings, whether adults are present,
and yes, even the unfortunate data like broken eggs or dead nestlings. Data is recorded regardless of which
species is living in the box. I have to be careful when opening a box because sometimes hornets have moved in.
Not all boxes are always active. Some box locations are better than others.
During my rounds, I have been the willing participant to watch nature unfold beginning in the cool spring and
on into a hot summer. I have seen (and heard) several species of frogs and toads; snakes slithering, fox and the
kits playing; ground hog families eating; red shoulder hawks calling; and of course the ever present deer
frolicking.
Kinder Farm Park has 65 boxes; and about 10 volunteers that make weekly checks during breeding season.
Bluebird boxes were originally installed by citizen scientists (private organizations and individuals) because the
bluebirds were struggling with nest site competition from the invasive and ever present house sparrows. In fact,
in the early 1970’s most people had never seen a bluebird, they were so rare. Providing more nesting sites in
Kinder Farm Park and across the eastern United States has helped the bluebird population climb to sustainable
levels and has been a tremendous success story for citizen scientists. If you think you might be interested in
monitoring bluebird boxes, you may contact Nolley Fisher at the Kinder Farm Park office. If you have any
other questions, please contact me at [email protected]. If you would like to learn more about birds in
general, please attend one of my birds walks this fall. Dates and information are included in this newsletter.

and meet at the visitor center. Participants can leave at any time. Dates are usually the first Sunday of the
month but September is an exception due to the holiday: Sept 12, Oct. 4th
, and Nov. 1 (daylight savings ends).
Cancelled if rain. Email Stacy at [email protected] if questions or on day of trip if weather iffy.

The Apprentice Garden at Kinder Farm Park is a program organized by the
University of Maryland Extension Service Master Gardeners and is chaired by
myself and fellow Master Gardner Teresa Rosello. It occupies two of the
community garden spaces and is dedicated to teaching families with children to
grow their own produce organically. Each family has personal garden space and
all share in the common garden areas. The master gardeners and the families meet
every Wednesday at 6:30 pm to plant, weed, water, de-bug, fret over, learn much
and harvest their own garden-grown
vegetables, fruits, and herbs.
Apprentice Gardens is an organic garden: No-till gardening techniques are used;
newspaper and straw spread on the pathways control weeds; no pesticides are
applied; and only Leaf-gro and organic fertilizer are used monthly.
In the shared gardens, the lettuces did well even into the heat of summer and now
red and yellow tomatoes, cherry tomatoes; jalapeno, sweet banana, and mariachi
peppers are ripening in mass. Zucchini, yellow squash, and kale are still producing,
and mint, oregano, chives, and basil are plentiful. The children enjoyed digging the
red and golden potatoes and finding treasure in the soil. “Best potatoes eve,” – as
reported by more than one youngster.
In their personal plots, families are encouraged to plant their own unique choice of
seeds and sets so the garden has a wide
variety of vegetables: corn is now ready
for harvest; dark purple heirloom tomatoes as well as hybrid tomatoes are
flourishing; plus cabbage, beans, carrots, greens and peppers of all kinds, and
kohlrabi. Sunflowers are blooming in more than one family plot.
This year we added a narrow strip of zinnias on the outside of the fence.
Seeds were sown in late spring and the flowers now attract pollinators to the
garden.
Please stop by and visit the gardens.

Our two mother ewes and our four new lambs are doing very well. Since
their birth in late March, Jeremiah and Jeovannah, our first boy and girl,
have developed an extremely lovable attitude toward people. Joel-Jaxon
and Jaylene, our last boy and girl, are small but strong. Joel-Jaxon has
little calcium horns growing at the moment! Jaylene, who was struggling in
her first week of life, is growing almost bigger than her brother!
The flock of sheep are registered Blue Faced Leicesters, a breed known for
their wool. The entire flock has many visitors that continue to visit and
follow the growth of them all, especially the lambs, and also request many
pictures with themselves and their children. The lambs occasionally still
nurse and are very close to their moms.
In September the lambs will show in the Anne Arundel County fair with
their Ewe mothers, who both took 1st Place, Reserve Champ, Champ, and
one with Grand Champ last season. After showing at the fair the lambs are
due to leave the park by the 4-H rules by November 1st.

This summer the Farm Educational group Goat Squad has had
a period of growth. Sixteen families are now working together
and teaching our park visitors about the animals. There are
now four Dairy Cows, one of whom, Bella is expect to calve in
late February or March. The goats are enjoying their new six
acres of vegetation and are doing their best to devour the
bumper crop of poison ivy. A few 4H goats reside with the
Goat Squad goats too, there are plenty of weeds to go around.
Our Vegetation Control Specialists have been doing a fine job
of educating park visitors about cows and goats and how to
manage invasive species, responsible crop rotation, and
parasite management. It has been a joy to see the park visitors
learn about the animals as they contribute to a healthy farm environment. We plan to send out both dairy and
brush control goats to be bred in the fall, right after the fall harvest festival. The goats will return to the main
complex by October the first to enjoy the festival.
Our Goat Squad families have been working hard to provide a rich learning environment for the visitors,
planting pumpkins, hatching eggs, raising chickens and turkeys, and managing pests. We look forward to many
little hooves on the ground delighting and teaching our park visitors in a few short months.

The sixth annual Anne Arundel County Fair Poultry Princess
Contest will take place on Wednesday, September 16th at the
county fairgrounds in Crownsville, Maryland during the
intermission of the Fair Queen competition. The mission of the
Poultry Princess Contest is to raise awareness about poultry by
educating the public about various types and breeds of poultry and
basic care; however, it is not a requirement that contestants own
poultry to compete. This contest offers young ladies from ages10-
15 an opportunity to participate by submitting a resume, written
essay, and interacting with a panel of judges through a "fishbowl"
question and an interview. Applicants must reside (for at least 1
year) in Anne Arundel County. The newly crowned Poultry
Princess will be awarded prize money, crown, and official sash,
2014 Anne Arundel County Fair Poultry Princess, Haley Reaney.
and will represent the county fair and the poultry industry throughout the fair and year. The registration deadline
is September 1, 2015 and must be accompanied by a wallet size photo and a non-refundable $5.00 fee.

Butterflies and Moths
The Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly The Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly is Maryland’s official State Insect! There are becoming fewer and
fewer of these special butterflies.
They look for one plant to lay their eggs on: the turtlehead plant. These plants can be found at your local garden center. Not only are they a beautiful addition to your garden, but the Checkerspot butterflies love them! Plant one in your garden and see if you can spot a Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly.
Cercopia Moth
The Cercopia Moth is the largest North American moth! It can grow to have a wingspan of 5-6 inches long! They only fly at night and are attracted to bright lights, so check your front porch light and see if you can find one!
The adult Cercopia moth only lives for 2 weeks. This is because they cannot eat, and their main purpose in the adult stage is to mate and lay eggs so new Cercopia moths can grow.
This is the lifecycle of a butterfly. The adult butterfly lays eggs, a caterpillar grows and hatches from the egg, the caterpillar eats, grows, and makes a cocoon. Once it is finished changing in the cocoon, it comes out as a beautiful butterfly.
Monarch Butterfly- Likes the native milk weeds and butterfly weeds. We will send seeds to you! Just send a Self
addressed stamped envelope) to: Wooden Nickel Park 10400 Shaker Dr. #334 Simpsonville, MD 21150
Grow your own milk weeds and butterfly weeds and see if a monarch butterfly comes to visit!

Wooden Nickel Park's goal is to connect children and their families to nature and to grow children's comfort, to increase their confidence, and unleash their
curiosity. By doing so, the children and their families will be engaging in healthy outdoor activities like hiking and exploring the environment. WNP has particularly
focused on creating a park concept that makes these parks entirely accessible. By design they will exceed the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance
requirements thus placing the experience within the reach of all children. Wooden Nickel Park is committed to providing accessibility.

Save the Date! Saturday, October 10th from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.
As we have mentioned previously, planning for this event starts in March or April each year and continues until
the end of October, when we are reviewing the year’s event and starting plans for the next year.
One of our biggest obstacles each year is worrying about having enough volunteers. They function in many
ways throughout the year – planning, preparation, set-up, on the day of the event in - ticket sales, running games
and activities, supervising student volunteers, making food for volunteers, stocking, parking, etc and, of course,
there is clean-up which starts immediately after the event and continues for the next week or two. Volunteer
forms are available in this newsletter, as well as on our web site at www.kinderfarmpark.org .
This year it is even easier to register on-line by going to https://docs.google.com/a/aacounty.org/forms/d/1g9tI-
lYf5LOv2or5Q7TcNnqaXU-wDT1ua5rtzxQcWPg/viewform?c=0&w=1 . It will only take a few minutes to
complete and submit the form.
Each of you can help! The more people we have, the less work there is for any single individual. Make this the
year that you join in – this really is a community effort for a community event.
One of our goals each year is to try to find additional ways to shorten the lines. We made changes in ticket
sales last year, but did not have an adequate opportunity to try it due to the inclement weather. The tickets will
be sold as individual tickets as in most carnivals. We hope you’ll find it an easier method. We are adding a
game or two and increasing the opportunity for more people to play at the same time for others.
All of your favorites are still there – pumpkin and face painting, tractor and pony rides, games and crafts, as
well as food and craft vendors, demonstrators and musical entertainment. Due to changes in operations, there
will be more farm animals, too!
As this is our primary fundraiser for the Friends, business sponsors / partnerships are being sought this year. If
your business is interested, please let us know.
In addition, we are seeking business donations for our raffle.
We are always looking for new ideas and would love to have your
input.
So join us at a meeting – they are held on the fourth Wednesday of
each month in the Visitors Center at 6:30 pm.
Please feel free to contact me for more information at
[email protected] or by phone at 443-618-9555 or 410-544-
8302.

Fall Harvest Festival on October 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This annual event attracts about 8,000 people for a day of games, demonstrations, animals, crafts and food
vendors. This festival is our largest event and draws people from all over the county. Activities include
pumpkin painting, corn cannons, scarecrow making, face painting, pumpkin bowling and encourage children of
all ages to get involved. Hayride passes accepted at this event.
Zombie 5-K Fun Run October 31, registration starts at 8:30 a.m. This year the Friends of Kinder Farm Park are introducing the Zombie 5-K Fun Run. The route includes both
paved and unpaved trail. As the runners move throughout the course, Zombie’s will be seeking their next meal.
Their meals come from the health flags that the runners will be wearing. We are expecting about 400
participants at this event.
Jingle Bell Hayride, December 5, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This event is a holiday tradition that involves a hayride around the park in our decorated hay wagons. After the
hayride enjoy some refreshments, visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clause, and spend time roasting marshmallows
around our bonfire. Do not be surprised if a few of the animals make an appearance at this event. This event
attracts about 300 people and hayride tickets accepted at this event.
