Key Comments

• The counselors were too strict, and they were mean. Horrible attitudes! And since we are children, we can't defend ourselves against them without being disrespectful. I would have had fun if not for them should've been. The food wasnt the best.

• The mentors were a little rude because they didn't want to be there!

• Didn't like the attitudes, and the environment was a little depressing, but other than that I had a lot of fun and I learned a ton!

• I would push the lectures up in later the day because it was very hard to stay awake during the presentation. I would increase the interaction between mentor and camper.

Key Comments

• I think students would enjoy the camp more if the rules weren't so intimidating, so instead of more yelling at us and lecture and some leaders complaining maybe incorporate a like... stress reliever right in the middle of the for the kids could just chill without having someone riding your back the whole time.

• …No one told us that shorts weren't allowed. Yes, I understand short shorts aren't allowed but normal mid thigh shorts should be fine.

• There needs to be better, faster communication with the students regarding the summer institute before the institute actually takes place.

• The part I liked most about the the camp was the 'HSTAlympics '

• This week of forensics camp really got me thinking about college and saving up money more and more beacause of Real Money, Real World.

• I like the freedom and how they tried to do everything possible to ensure we have fun but also learn.

• The students had to solve the case and do the labs on their own. The teachers didn't do everything for them.

• The projects. I loves running tests and trying to figure things out for myself without help... It was something new!

Key Comments

• Hsta is a once in a life experience that I'm overjoyed to be a part of. At some points I feel like I wish I wasn't but it's all worth it.

• It has made me want to possibly help save peoples lives from deadly assault cases.

• Listening to the guest speaker that works in forensics and talked about how she went to the crime scene and there was a pregnant lady that was the victim. That's the type of things I want to do and her talking about it made me even more interested.

• During the camp I learned many new subjects I had before not known much about. I enjoyed it and am glad I was able to learn these new things. Plus the activities outside of classes were very fun and exciting.

Final Comments

• The Mentors/Counselors were a key factor in the ratings for this year’s camp. They impacted overall satisfaction with the SI and other major components.

• Even though there were not statistically sig. differences between interaction with teachers/faculty and learning experiences, last year’s ratings were slightly higher.

• Some participants, nevertheless, reported that they appreciated that they were allowed to “solve” the mystery, “using my mind to try and figure out this crime” without the teachers giving them the answer.

• The teachers also reported that they were either “Somewhat Prepared” to “Extremely Prepared” to help students conceive and carry out projects. (m=4.10/0.57 vs. m=4.33/0.71 (2013))

• 80% vs. 70% (2013) reported a gain of ideas for club projects.

• The range of responses regarding faculty competency in leading the instructional sessions was from “Strongly Disagree” to “Strongly Agree”. (m=3.80/1.48 vs. m=4.40/1.35 (2013))

Key Comments

• This year everyone involved seemed to be very indifferent.....a very different feeling from previous years. The student and teacher week went very smoothly though. Many things like the food, rooms, cleanliness and the like are out of their control.

• The faculty in charge shouldn't directly tell the student the answers.

• One evening session should be dedicated to team building between students and faculty. Male and female faculty should not be expected to share a restroom at a professional workshop/institute.

• The camp always works out nicely. I really enjoy how as teachers we become a true expert on one lab and get to teach and reteach that lab rather than feeling somewhat competent in all labs.

• I would like to see a leadership exercise to bring the faculty closer together.
