Enhance your core competencies to meet your professional, personal goalsUniversity and college graduates play important roles in the working world. They bring new ideas, advanced methods and cutting-edge theories that would benefit most businesses. They have spent years in post-sec-ondary institutions, working towards degrees, diplo-mas, certificates – or combinations of all three.

But entering the workforce for the first time can be more than a little overwhelming. Often, new gradu-ates lack the professional tools that more experienced workers take for granted.

Post-secondary student Alex Busvek recognized a need to enhance his communication skills so he enrolled in the Dale Carnegie Course. But he soon realized that the Course was helping him become so much more than a better speaker; he was learning leadership skills that would help him as he transitioned into a career.

Now, Alex has applied to the MBA program at Ivey Business School, Western University, in London, Ontario. He agreed to share his thoughts about his experience in the Dale Carnegie Course.

Mastering skills for a changing world

(The Dale Carnegie Course) specializes in the development of effective communication, leadership and inter-personal skills. In fact, the Dale Carnegie Business Group has earned a reputation for helping many prominent business professionals in attaining their goals.

I initially enrolled in the program to become a more persuasive speaker. However, during the course of ten weeks, I was able to internalize many of the Dale Carnegie principles which have been instrumental to my aca-demic success and personal growth.

Furthermore, the program gave me the opportunity to connect with other business professionals and make valu-able contacts. I worked with these individuals on a regular basis in order to obtain the maximum benefit from the program.

At the beginning of the program, I set a goal to put the Dale Carnegie human relations principles to action on a daily basis. Ultimately, this goal required my full co-operation and willingness to expand my comfort zones.

Each week, I would report to the students in the Dale Carnegie program how I applied the principles to my pro-fessional and interpersonal life through a public speech. I received instruction from an experienced Dale Carn-egie coach who constantly challenged me to communicate with energy and speak clearly.

In addition, I was engaged in many role-play situations and dramatic scenarios with my peers in the program. Furthermore, I was able to successfully build rapport with my classmates and assist them in improving their self-confidence.

A major breakthrough (for me) was that I was able to successfully apply the human relations principles to my summer job. I was required to give a speech to the class describing a scenario in which I demonstrated sympa-thy and respect towards a co-worker’s opinion. The class voted me the recipient of the “Dale Carnegie Human Relations Award.” As the youngest member in the group, it was a huge honour to be recognized for my leader-ship qualities, by very qualified individuals.

I continue to reflect on the experience and apply it to my professional and personal life.

- Alex Busvek, graduate, The Dale Carnegie Course, August 2013
