WELCOME With the Festival coming up and this being the busiest time in our cycle of activity I am particularly aware of and grateful to the many people who make it possible for us to bring the arts to the heart of the community all the year round: our dedicated staff, who go above and beyond the call of duty especially at Festival time; our amazing band of volunteers without whom we couldn’t function; the Board of Dorchester Arts, whose generosity with their knowledge and their time keeps us on the right track; our members, a growing band whose faith in us is heartening; our funders who continue to make our case to those who hold the purse strings; the leaders of our associate music and theatre groups; our audiences and participants, both familiar

faces and newcomers; and last but not least the extraordinary creative people who bring their talents to us for performance and participatory events, without whom none of this would be possible at all.

Thank you all.

A chance to catch two of the UK’s finest blues exponents touring in a rare, unplugged / acoustic format, duetting new songs from their respective upcoming albums.Multi-instrumentalist Sharpville has been a stalwart of the international blues scene for many years – to quote BB King: “what a talent”. Wilde burst onto the International blues scene in 2007 opening for Jools Holland at The Royal Albert Hall and has toured extensively ever since, playing up to 250 concerts a year across the globe. Not to be missed....

ThE yOUnG FOLKFriday 16 MayMUSIc - Dorchester Arts centre8pm (doors & bar 7.30pm)£10

There is nothing typical about The Young Folk. Yes, the band members are youthful, and yes, the songs are variants / enhancements on what could be termed ‘folk’, but if you’re looking for obvious reference points (or worse, clichés) then you’d best search elsewhere.

In the past year alone they have gigged in the USA, Italy, Ireland and the UK (the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival) and are set to release their debut album in the first half of 2014.

Please note: for your comfort on the original wooden seating you may wish to bring a cushion.

February 14th 1895 saw the triumphant opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest and the zenith of Wilde’s career. Less than 100 days later, he was sentenced to two years hard labour...

Written by his grandson Merlin Holland this dramatisation of Wilde’s Old Bailey trials uses the original words spoken in court, giving us an insight into his flawed genius.

The Old Crown Court at Shire Hall provides the perfect setting for the play: Wilde visited Dorchester twice in the 1880’s to give lectures and met Thomas Hardy...who presided as a magistrate in this very court...

Dorchestra community OrchestraDorchestra celebrated its first anniversary in February of 2014. We have had a great year meeting once a fortnight on Sunday afternoons in the Arts Centre. Catherine our conductor has guided us all through a vast array of notes working towards our concerts in May and December.

We have now reached the point where we need extra space so, although still under the umbrella of Dorchester Arts, we are now holding our rehearsals in the Durnovaria Band Hall on the corner of King’s Road and Little Britain in Fordington.

If you are learning an instrument or picking up your instrument long neglected in the attic you would be very welcome to come along and listen to our concert on May 18th at 4pm in the United Church on South St.YoucanthendecideifyouwouldliketojoinusinSeptember when we resume after the summer break.

Look out for rehearsal dates in the next Dorchester Arts brochure.

Pop clubEach week Pop Club members get the chance to engage in a wide variety of musical workshops and perform using a sound system, under the guidance of music producer Mickey Wills. A fantastic opportunity for young people to discover and experience live music performance. Pop Club also plays live at gigs and festivals throughout the year.
