OUR MISSION To provide homeless animals with
a second chance at life and
companionship in a no-kill shelter.
Our organization goes beyond
shelter walls and is committed to:
1) Positive people and animal
relationships and placements
2) Offering affordable spay, neuter
and vaccination clinics
3) Cooperative rescue efforts
4) Animal welfare education
At Second Chance, beautiful black cats
are taking center stage in the “Black Cat
Special” adoption promotion. To celebrate
Adopt A Shelter Cat Month we are adopt-
ing our midnight-colored kitties for $80.00
(a $40 sav-
ings), hoping
to increase
the number
of adoptions
and get more
cats into
l o v i n g
homes.
D a r k e r -
colored kit-
ties often get
overlooked
in shelters.
We’re not exactly sure why because
some of the friendliest cats we’ve met are
black. They just seem to have a harder
time getting adopted.
Take Ariel for example. She’s a long-
haired ebony beauty queen who reigns
supreme over the other felines in the shel-
ter. She was rescued from the cold North
Woods along with her five beautiful kit-
tens. All of her family has been adopted,
but mom Ariel is still with us. It’s time she
began her new life as somebody’s beloved
pet, making her the triumphant star she
was meant to be.
You’d rather not have a long-haired
kitty? Then how about Kiki—her family
left her and her brother at home, thinking
provisions were made for their two cat’s
care while they were out of the country.
Lack of communication resulted in the
abandonment of these two unfortunate kit-
ties. Their situation deteriorated rapidly as
it was winter, and they were rescued and
brought to the Shelter.
They received lots of loving care and
kibble and soon began to fill out nicely.
Kiki’s brother found a new home, and now
it’s Kiki’s turn. This sleek and lovely
beauty will surely cast a spell on her new
home.

Homer’s Homilies Hi! My name is Homer and I always say "there's no place like
home". But what do
you do when unex-
pected circumstances
require you to be away
for a brief absence, or
worse, a permanent
evacuation?
People have been
talking about the recent
tornado tragedy in
Oklahoma and it got
me to thinking. This
should prompt all of
you pet owners to come up with an emergency plan to deal with
disasters. I know, you say you're too busy, and it is just one more
thing to do. No matter how little time or money you have you
can still commit to doing some simple things that just might help
save your pet's life.
Get a "Rescue Alert Sticker" and post it in a prominent
place. This will alert emergency responders that we, your special
pets, are inside the house waiting to be rescued. If you do have to
evacuate, keep us together with your family. If it isn't safe for
you, it certainly isn't safe for us. Plan ahead. Not all emergency
shelters are pet-friendly. Make a list of boarding facilities, shel-
ters, or homes of friends and family where we, your best friends,
could be housed temporarily.
Please keep
an emergency kit
and supplies
handy for your
animals and
make sure all
family members
know where they
are. Items to
consider include
photos of your pets, copies of their medical records, prescription
medication, food, lots of bottled water, a carrier for your cat, and
don't forget the litter and a disposable pan.
It is time to do all you can to possibly save the life of your
cherished pets. Be a lifesaver. Your best buddies are counting on
you! (This message has been endorsed by me, Homer, and all my
buddies at Second Chance Animal Rescue.)

High School Career Fair Recently, Directors Tony Ilacqua and Alicia Prater represented
Second Chance at the Littleton High School Career Fair. High
school students from
throughout the region
stopped by the table to talk
about the cats and the shel-
ter. Materials were avail-
able on veterinary techni-
cian careers from Great Bay
Community College in
Portsmouth, New Hamp-
shire, and Vermont Techni-
cal College in Randolph
Center, Vermont. Tony and
Alicia also provided information on the shelter, handed out volun-
teer applications to interested high school juniors & seniors and
answered questions about how an animal rescue operates.

Community Journalism Connection Julianne Walshaw volunteers
at Second Chance in her spare
time, and she recently adopted
Binky. She’s a student at Lyn-
don State and added to our digi-
tal exposure by writing and
filming an online article about

nized online news outlet unmatched in all of New England.
Real Men Love (Shelter) Cats!
The Cat Cottage The Above the Notch Humane Society recently donated
“Notch’s House” to Second Chance. Notch’s House was a hand-
made, wooden super-shed-on-wheels built by the Littleton High
School Building Trades Program with materials donated by
Dodge Contract-
ing. They used it
for many years as
a booth at the
Littleton Farmers’
Market. The Hu-
mane Society is
located in Little-
ton and rescues
and finds homes
for dogs. Read
all about them at www.atnhs.org.
Second Chance has refurbished and renamed this wonderful
gift, and taken it home to the Farmers’ Market on Riverglen Lane.
Stop by any Sunday, June 9th through mid-October, and check us
out. Thank you Above the Notch Humane Society!
Cat Tails: Mango
“We just thought we would
share an update on Mango. His
new name is Nesta and he has
settled in perfectly amongst our
other cats and dog. We simply
adore him and couldn't ask for
a better boy. He is so loved!
Attached is a picture of him
and our daughter Lilian cud-
dling it up! Thanks again for an
easy adoption. Erika S.”
Page 3 Summer 2013
Cat Tails: Bill “Thank you for letting Bill (now
known as Tony) come home
with us. He likes to cuddle with
me at night. We are happy to
have him with us. From, Jason”
Cat Tails: Rusty & Sidney
“What loves! We are so
blessed to have the two of
them in our lives. Adopting
mature cats was exactly the
right strategy for us. We are so
lucky no one took Vinnie for
that year he was in your care,
probably because he had lost
part of an ear (the reason why
we changed his name from
Sidney to Vincent). Visitors to
our home are amazed how
friendly and loving Vinnie is to
everybody from adults to little
children. Rusty is still nervous
around strangers, but even he
seems to be getting better in
our new house. We can't thank
you enough for adding them to
our lives. Gordon & Joanne H.”
Dance for the Animals
Recently some very special girls from the Topsham/
Corinth area of Vermont paid a visit to Second Chance
and presented kitty litter, cat food, paper towels, laundry
detergent, bleach, cat toys and a cat bed to the Shelter!
These five Girl Scouts of Troop 30012, accompanied by
their two troop leaders, wanted to do a fund raiser as a
community service project on animals and they chose the
kitties of Second Chance. Now what to do for a fund
raiser? They decided that a dance would be fun, and to
make it even more fun, they all made costumes and went
to the dance as different animals! A great time was had by all and the troop raised $106 to purchase
all those supplies. A heartfelt “Thank You” to Troop 30012 and to all who support them.

Ways to Help
We know that you're swamped with requests for donations. While we all support the
big national organizations that help animals, we ask that you first consider giving to your local shelter. We are all
volunteer with no paid staff, so 100% of your donation goes directly for the care of the animals. You can visit us
any day and see your gift at work giving the abandoned and abused a "Second Chance"!
