2 - Madison Cortland ARC - Summer 2013

From theBoard of Directors

From theExecutive Director

On June 15, Ray Lewandowski retired as Executive Director of Madison Cortland ARC after forty one years and the Board of Directors selected me to be the new Executive Director. I am deeply honored.

Madison Cortland ARC is like family to me. I have worked for the ARC for thirty seven years and have worked in a variety of departments before I became Assistant Executive Director. I know what it is like to be a direct care professional, I understand the complexity of regulations, and I empathize with family members of people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. For me, the key to success is respect; respecting those you work with, respecting the families that you serve, and respecting the person who is receiving care. Yes, I will agree with Erin Henderson, respect is the new “R” word (see page 9).

On my third day as Executive Director a horrible accident occurred involving one of our buses filled with passengers. Of course my heart sank when I received the call. I rushed to the scene along with other ARC employees and what I witnessed was amazing. A car had crossed the center line and smashed into the side of an ARC bus sending the bus into the ditch. Neighbors who saw the accident rushed to help, cars stopped, people on motorcycles stopped. Thankfully none of the injuries was life threatening. I just want to thank everyone who responded to the accident, so many helping hands. Words truly cannot express my gratitude.

Our motto at Madison Cortland ARC is “Together we are building futures” and together we are doing just that. We are preparing for the future as the service delivery system for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities changes to a managed care environment. As we learn about the new system I will do my best to keep families and the individuals we support informed.

Again, I would like to thank the Madison Cortland ARC Board of Directors for having confidence in me to be the new Executive Director. I look forward to continuing to lead this agency in a positive direction. Please feel free to contact me at anytime if you have any questions or concerns.

Most Sincerely,

JackJack C. CampbellExecutive Director

Throughout this issue review photos from the Annual Dinner and Awards

I would like to begin by thanking Madison Cortland ARC Membership for electing me as President of this great organization. I have been involved with Madison Cortland ARC for many years and I have served on the Board of Directors since 1995. My now adult children attended the ARC Early Learning Center Program in Oneida before they attended kindergarten. I am proud to represent Madison Cortland ARC as a Board of Governor of NYSARC, Inc. and to serve on NYSARC’s Legal Committee.

We are on the cusp of a new direction at Madison Cortland ARC. The field of disabilities is changing as we know it in New York State and we are entering into a managed care environment. This is new to us and with most things that are new, it offers some uncertainty and some promise. I want to reassure everyone that Madison Cortland ARC is preparing for these changes and that I have every confidence in the leadership and staff that the changes will occur as smoothly as possible. The one thing that will not change is the quality of services that people with developmental disabilities receive and that everyone at Madison Cortland ARC will continue to follow the ARC Guiding Principles; People Come First, We Respect Each Other, We Encourage Creativity, We Never Stop Learning, We are a Part of the Community, and We are a Team.

It is also my pleasure to introduce you to our new Executive Director, Jack Campbell. Jack is not new to Madison Cortland ARC. He started out in direct care over 35 years ago and worked his way up to Assistant Executive Director. Jack is highly respected locally and across New York, he currently is the Chairperson for the New York State Rehabilitation Association and has served on numerous state committees in the field of disabilities. I hope you will join me and the Board of Directors in welcoming Jack Campbell in his new position of Executive Director.

As we head in this new direction of managed care, I hope everyone will be patient as we are doing the best we can, I hope everyone will ask questions as we too are learning, and I hope everyone will remember change, it’s inevitable.

Sincerely,

RandyRandy Schaal President

Summer 2013 - Madison Cortland ARC - 3People Come First

On June 19, a Madison Cortland ARC bus with fifteen passengers was hit by an oncoming car that had crossed the center line on Route 5 in Oneida. Thankfully no life threatening injuries occurred. Credit must be given to the driver of the bus who has been trained in defensive driving. While the accident could not be avoided, it clearly could have been much worse.

Madison Cortland ARC would like to thank the emergency responders from the Oneida Fire Department, Oneida Police Department, Vineall Ambulance Service, Madison County Sherriff Department, and NYS Police, all the doctors and nurses at Oneida Health Care, and all the good samaritans that stopped to help.

A special thank you goes out to all ARC employees who demonstrated their dedication to helping people with disabilities by immediately responding and providing calmness to those affected by the accident. Behind the scenes ARC staff notified and provided reassurance to families, and Board Members offered help and support.

When tragedy strikes, the community comes together to help, give strength, and to remind us all that there is goodness in this world.

People come first, especiallyin a time of need

Randy J. Schaal, Attorney at Law and President of Madison Cortland ARC received the 2013 Les Mitchell Developmental Disabilities Award.

Mr. Schaal once wrote, “we are products of our environment” and because of his family history it has shaped him into the man he is today. Randy’s parents were refuges from Nazi Germany and experienced the unimaginable. Randy’s father lost all of his family in the Holocaust. Why? Because they were believed to have been different and sub-human. It was Randy’s mother that raised him with the belief that all men are created equal.

Randy is a long time volunteer on the Madison Cortland ARC Board of Directors and a Board of Governor for NYSARC. It was due to Randy’s upbringing that he recognized a group in our society that was shunned and thought to have been different. At a young age in school he volunteered to help people with intellectual disabilities and even though it was not popular, Randy would spend time talking with his special friends and taking the time to get to know them. His interest to help people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities never wavered throughout his adulthood and career. He has served on the ARC Board of Directors for nearly 20 years and has served on NYSARC’s Board of Governors for over 10 years.

As an attorney, Randy will help family members of a person with intellectual disabilities, making sure that they understand their legal rights. He has helped update NYSARC’s Bylaws, serves on the Madison Cortland ARC Guardianship Committee, and is a strong advocate for those who face challenges.

As a parent, Randy has two children (now adults) without disabilities who attended the ARC Early

Learning Center Program. He and his wife Jill felt that it be important to demonstrate to their children that the world is filled with people who are different and they also wanted to teach the importance of acceptance. When his son graduated from nursery school, it was so rewarding for Randy to see his son interacting with “the disabled”. The beauty of it all was that his son never saw the disability he just saw that he had a friend. For Randy and his wife Jill, that was one of the greatest rewards of being a parent.

Randy Schaal will not brag about his volunteer work, he just digs in.

On June 26, Madison County Community Services Board presented Randy Schaal with the Les Mitchell Developmental Disabilities Award.

As a young girl, Beth was inspired by a relative with a developmental disability. It was because of him that she chose a career in human services.

Beth received her AAS Degree from Mohawk Community College and her BA in Sociology from SUNY IT.

A Really Big Show...Each spring Madison Cortland ARC’s SunShine Choir, The Wind Dancers, and Mighty Fortress combine their efforts with Stage Works from the Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter. The result is a theater filled to capacity with energizing song and dance. This year was exceptionally fun with the “Comin’ Up Country” theme.

The Wind Dancers danced to “I Am” a song written and sung by Liz Longley and the SunShine Choir performed “Wonderful” by Kesleah Hall and Dan Serafini. Both songs were written especially for Songs for NYSARC.

The Greater Oneida Kallet Civic Center was standing room only for this concert that was held on June 11. Over a hundred singers joined together to end the show with God Bless America/Star Spangled Banner. Performers received a well deserved standing ovation.

The other songs performed by the SunShine included “Hey Good Lookin’”, “I’ll Fly Away”, and “Mountain Music”.

Hats off to Mighty Fortress Madison Cortland ARC, under the direction of Michelle Collins, for a fantastic performance. From left to right Patrick Durdan, Nate Carney, John Gildersleeve, Will Kuhn, Joe Raymond, R J Lehner, Josh Candeloro, and Daniel Voelxen.

Voices from Stage Works from The Arc Oneida-Lewis, sing country favorite “Achy Breaky Heart”.

Anne Rider of the Madison Cortland ARC SunShine Choir welcomes guests to the spring concert.

Madison Cortland ARC RecognizesThree Very Special People

Brandy Bedell, Oneida, is a young woman who grew up living in numerous foster care homes before she settled in with an ARC Family Care Provider in 2006. Brandy was completely dependent upon others for her care. Over the years, and with the help of her family, she was able to learn to do more for herself. Along with that came more confidence. Brandy enjoys volunteering, music, bowling, and participating in the Special Olympics where she has won gold, silver, and bronze medals. Today, Brandy is fully independent with her life skills. She works at Vernon Downs Racino and is one of the original members of the kitchen team. Brandy loves her job and she loves her family.

Every year a committee of the Board of Directors requests nominations from staff for the Special Achievement Award that is given out at the Madison Cortland ARC Annual Dinner. This year was no different from previous years except for one thing there were more nominations than ever before and all of them worthy of recognition. After serious contemplation the committee decided to make an exception and select three individuals who have overcome challenges in their lives.

Ron Marion, Cortland, has been blind since birth and has a developmental disability. For most of his life he lived with his mother. every day at the J M Murray Center in Cortland. He takes great pride in his job and works hard. He especially enjoys showing new employees the way around. For a man that faces many challenges his attitude is amazing, always cheerful and always wanting to try new things. He rarely complains. Ron is without a doubt an inspiration to others. Just look at his smile.

Michelle Wolfe, Oneida, was featured in the last issue of the Many Faces of ARC as she advocated against state budget cuts. Michelle’s life seemed to take one bad turn after another until she started services at Madison Cortland ARC. With the supports from ARC, Michelle has been able to gain confidence and control of her life. Today she resides in a Family Care Home, and with the help of Alternatives Vocational Services got a job in the community. Everyday her confidence grows and with it she is having positive experiences. Michelle sings in the SunShine Choir, is a member of the Madison Motivators, a self advocacy group, and volunteers in her community. Her dream is to be reunited with her son. Another Chance for dARC“Glow in the dARC”, our annual golf tournament to benefit Madison Cortland ARC, has been rescheduled for Friday September 6, 2013. Due to the strong storms that came through the area in June, ARC had to postpone the event that had been originally planned for June 29th. A good portion of the Oneida Community Golf Club where our event is held was under water and unplayable.

“Our sponsors were very supportive and some of the premier prizes that had specific dates attached to them were extended to work with our new tournament date.” said Wayne Horning, Special Project Director for Madison Cortland ARC.

“Glow in the dARC” is a unique golf tournament. Players start off competing in a 9 hole Captain and Crew match in the afternoon followed by a barbeque dinner. When the sun goes down players go back out on the course and play a 3 hole tournament in the dark! The course is lined with soft glowing light. The greens are lined with neon lights and the hole is illuminated with neon. The best part is the golf balls all glow in neon colors. They look like shooting stars as they fly through the air.

“We had an excellent response last year and many of the teams returned this year.” said Wayne Horning, “Both the winners of the Captain and Crew and the Glow Ball tourney are back to defend their title.”

Openings are available if you would like to sign up to play and/or be a sponsor. The cost for Glow in the dARC Golf Tournament is only $85.00 per person. This year’s raffle prizes include New York Yankee tickets, Autographed NY Jets football, NY Giants Autographed poster, Panera Bread for a year, fine wines and champagnes, gift baskets, gift certificates and more.

Erin continues to educate people to stop using the “R” word and replace it with RESPECT. Erin also advocated against budget cuts that affect people with disabilities.
