Custom Riders, Inc. is planning a beautiful ride through the tri-state area on Saturday, August 18, for the 14th Annual Custom Riders, Inc. Tour de Dubuque. Custom Riders, Inc., in conjunction with the Dubuque Bicycle Club and area classic car clubs invites motorcycles and custom cars to join the ride beginning at Sandy Hook Tavern, with stops in Wisconsin and Illinois and ending at Knickers in Dubuque. The bicyclists will head from the Sandy Hook Tavern to their destination in New Diggings, where all three groups will meet.

Registration begins at 10 am at Sandy Hook Tavern, 3868 Badger Road, Hazel Green, WI, with all groups departing by noon. Riders are encouraged to collect pledges in advance of the ride. There is a $10 entry fee for each person wishing to ride that has not collected pledges. Pledge forms are available at the Hospice of Dubuque office, www.hospiceofdubuque.org or on page 10 of this newsletter. Prizes will be awarded to top pledge collectors in each category.

Dubuque Racing AssociationHospice of Dubuque would like to express appreciation to the Dubuque Racing Association for the $3,840 grant through the DRA’s 2012 Annual Grant Program. These funds will be used to purchase computer work tables, which will facilitate the handling and scanning of medical documents for inclusion in the electronic medical record. “When you volunteer, you are never quite sure how it will go. I volunteered to bring my sturdy basket and hand out rocks at the Tree of Life Service and expected to get some exercise carrying my basket. Instead I received a wonderful reward. Those receiving the rocks were so touched! To watch them decide if they needed ‘courage’ or ‘strength’ and the emotions that played over their faces allowed me to be part of an intimate moment I would otherwise not have been able to share. Some were so conflicted that I kept saying ‘just take one of each!’ It meant a great deal to those who took those little rocks—as if they really were receiving strength and courage. I feel privileged to have been part of handing out those needed gifts.”

“After the Hospice Tree of Life event ended, I spent a little time walking around with a basket of rocks, to see if anybody might want to take another one or two rocks for a friend or loved one who couldn’t attend. I approached a woman who was standing alone, and held the basket out to her. ‘Would you like another rock?’ I asked her. She smiled and picked up a rock. She looked at the rock in her hand and then at me. ‘Can I tell you a story?’ she asked me. ‘Sure,’ I said. She told me that she had lost her mother a few months ago. And she said that as her mother lay dying, she used to read to her from my book. She said her mom liked my column, and so in the evenings she would read a column or two to her from my book. Sometimes her son would listen too. She said what I wrote about my kids would bring back memories for her mother of when her own kids were little, and her mother would tell those stories to this daughter and grandson. She said they read columns every night, and sometimes they laughed and sometimes they cried. The woman said she had a really positive Hospice experience, so she wanted to come to this Tree of Life event, and of course she’d been thinking about her mother all evening. And then I walked up to her, someone she had never met, whom she had no idea was connected to Hospice, but someone she associated with her mom. And I offered her a rock that said, ‘courage.’ We both had some tears and hugged before we parted company. I tapped the rock in her hand. ‘I think that’s from your mom,’ I told her. That, my friends, is a Hospice moment.”

Who would have thought that a rock could actually lighten a person’s load? Yet, that is what happened at this year’s Tree of Life Memorial Service when members of the Hospice of Dubuque Board of Directors and Staff walked through the crowd handing out memory stones with the words “strength” and “courage.” One of the staff members stated the rocks were received with such reverence, it was like handing something holy to memorial service attendees. She felt honored to share such a sacred moment. Please read on as Hospice of Dubuque Nursing Services Director, Katy Morrow, and Hospice of Dubuque Board Member, Amy Gilligan, share their experiences with the Tree of Life memory stones.

The 2012 Tree of Life Service was held on May 22 in Washington Park. The lovely weather, in addition to music from the local group, Tapestry, provided the perfect opportunity for hundreds to reminisce and reflect upon their loved ones. Hospice of Dubuque family member, Dick Westhoff, shared the story of his wife’s illness and the many times he relied on strength and courage throughout his journey. The Tree of Life display, which was lit at the conclusion of the service, was adorned with over 1,400 lights representing loved ones honored or remembered.

We are truly grateful to our generous supporters, who through their Tree of Life donations, helped raise over $40,000 for Hospice of Dubuque services in this community. We also thank Behr’s Funeral Home for sponsoring the advertising for this year’s Tree of Life.

Bill’s Tap Fish Fry

“Big Duffer” Hospice Golf OutingThere is still time to gather your family or friends for the 4-person best shot golf outing on Saturday, July 28, at Lacoma Golf Course. The “Big Duffer” Hospice Golf Outing is a great time to play a round of golf in memory of someone special. The cost is $70 per person for 18-holes or $55 for 9-holes. Tee times begin at 1 pm. Cost includes green fees, prizes, golf cart and a grill- your-own steak dinner. Not a golfer? For $25 join the golfers at 5:30 for dinner, drawings and prizes. All proceeds from the golf outing benefit Hospice of Dubuque.

Join in the celebration on Saturday, August 25!

Each year, when the first Monday in August rolls around, it’s time for some great fish and small town hospitality at the Bill’s Tap Annual Fish Fry in Farley, Iowa. This annual event benefits Hospice of Dubuque. Join Randy and Annie Schroeder and friends on Monday, August 6, for some delicious fish, courtesy of FarFry, and a meal with all the trimmings. The cost is a donation to Hospice of Dubuque.

Donations of fish, cabbage, tomatoes or garden produce would be appreciated. Donated fish must be filleted and frozen in water, with all items delivered to Bill’s Tap prior to the event.

Since 1998 the efforts of Bill’s Tap have resulted in $99,140 to Hospice of Dubuque. We sincerely thank all those associated with the fish fry. Please support this community event as they plan to exceed the $100,000 mark, in this, their 15th year.

Memory loss that disrupts daily life may be a symptom of Alzheimer’s, a fatal brain disease that causes a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. There are 10 warning signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Every individual may experience one or more of these signs in different degrees. If you notice any of them, please see a doctor.

1. Memory loss that disrupts daily lifeOne of the most common signs of Alzheimer’s is memory loss, especially forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events; asking for the same information over and over; relying on memory aides (e.g., reminder notes or electronic devices) or family members for things they used to handle on their own. What is a typical age-related change? Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later.

2. Challenges in planning or solving problemsSome people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before. What is a typical age-related change? Making occasional errors when balancing a checkbook.

3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisurePeople with Alzheimer’s often find it hard to complete daily tasks. Sometimes, people may have trouble driving to a familiar location, managing a budget at work or remembering the rules of a favorite game. What is a typical age-related change? Occasionally needing help to use settings on a microwave or to record a television show. 4. Confusion with time or placePeople with Alzheimer’s can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it is not happening immediately. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there. What is a typical age-related change? Getting confused about the day of the week but figuring it out later. 5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationshipsFor some people, having vision problems is a sign of Alzheimer’s. They may have difficulty reading, judging distance and determining color or contrast. In terms of perception, they may pass a mirror and think someone else is in the room. They may not realize they are the person in the mirror. What is a typical age-related change? Vision changes related to cataracts. 6. New problems with words in speaking or writingPeople with Alzheimer’s may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, have problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name (e.g., calling a “watch” a “hand-clock”). What is a typical age-related change? Sometimes having trouble finding the right word. 7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace stepsA person with Alzheimer’s disease may put things in unusual places. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. Sometimes, they may accuse others of stealing. This may occur more frequently over time. What is a typical age-related change? Misplacing things from time to time, such as a pair of glasses or the remote control. 8. Decreased or poor judgmentPeople with Alzheimer’s may experience changes in judgment or decision-making. For example, they may use poor judgment when dealing with money, giving large amounts to telemarketers. They may pay less attention to grooming or keeping themselves clean. What is a typical age-related change? Making a bad decision once in a while. 9. Withdrawal from work or social activitiesA person with Alzheimer’s may start to remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects or sports. They may have trouble keeping up with a favorite sports team or remembering how to complete a favorite hobby. They may also avoid being social because of the changes they have experienced. What is a typical age-related change? Sometimes feeling weary of work, family and social obligations.

10. Changes in mood and personalityThe mood and personalities of people with Alzheimer’s can change. They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They may be easily upset at home, at work, with friends or in places where they are out of their comfort zone. What is a typical age-related change? Developing specific ways of doing things and becoming irritable when a routine is disrupted.

If you have a favorite recipe, perhaps one passed on by a family member or friend, we would love to add it to our cookbook. Include a brief description if your recipe has a story or you would like to designate the dish in honor or in memory of a loved one. Photos are also accepted. Acknowledgement will be given for each recipe received.

To submit, neatly print or type your recipe following the instructions. There is a limit of two recipes per person and recipes will not be returned. Mail your recipe to Hospice of Dubuque, 1670 JFK Road, Dubuque, IA 52002, or email to community_relations@hospiceofdubuque.org.

• Print neatly or type, as this will greatly reduce any errors.

• List all ingredients in order of use in ingredients list and directions.

• Include container sizes, (e.g., 16 oz. package, 24 oz. can, etc.).

• Keep all directions in paragraph form, not in steps.

• Use names of ingredients in the directions, as “Combine flour and sugar.” Do not use statements as “Combine first three ingredients.”

• Include temperatures and cooking, chilling, baking and/or freezing times.

Hospice of Dubuque was honored to participate in the luminary lighting ceremony at the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life on Friday evening, June 1.

“Letting Go”

If you have attended the Hospice of Dubuque Memorial Services through the years, you may have heard former volunteer, Mary Kate Bristow, sing the original song “Letting Go.” Many have been touched by the words of this song, written by Robert Dunn and Mary Kate Bristow. A video of “Letting Go” has been developed by Hospice of Dubuque using photos

of the patients and families with whom we have journeyed through the years. To watch this touching video, visit www.hospiceofdubuque.org.

In hospice, spirituality not only refers to religious or spiritual beliefs, but also to who we are, what we do and the totality of our lives—our legacy. Our legacy is an aspect of our self that remains in the world after we die, such as something specific that we leave for our loved ones or an understanding of the life we have lived.

When approaching the end of life, it is common to contemplate one’s legacy. This contemplation process may evoke a wide range of emotions such as joy, grief, peace, anxiety or satisfaction. Through this reflection process, we may come to a deeper, more satisfying understanding of what impact and influence our lives have had. Ultimately, we all want to know or be reassured that our life has mattered to those we love and to the world.

Hospice spiritual care providers may use an ethical will with patients as a tool in this reflection process. An ethical will is created to share and leave a patient’s legacy with those who matter. Ethical wills originated in Biblical literature as family blessings. In medieval times, writers added personal histories, ethical beliefs and important values.

Modern ethical wills include the traditional content already stated, but can contain additional content including life lessons, words of wisdom, spiritual or religious histories, life changing experiences, hopes for the futures of loved ones, birthday or anniversary wishes and much more. Ethical wills can be created in a wide range of media, such as audio or video recordings, narrated scrapbooks or photo albums, or even a PowerPoint presentation, which integrates many media formats.

After death, loved ones may be comforted, encouraged and even strengthened by the words provided for them in an ethical will. An ethical will may very well add the finishing touch to a life well-lived. The Hospice of Dubuque spiritual care staff is here to help those in hospice realize that truly, every life counts!

The 22nd Annual Kernall & Big Al Wild Game Feed was held March 31, 2012 at The Barn in Sherrill. The day was full of food, music, auctions and hundreds of supporters gathering to support their favorite charities. Hospice of Dubuque received $3,350, a portion of the proceeds from this year’s event. Thank you to organizers Kris Kernall, Al Haigh and Julie Wolff, as well as the many individuals that provided food and support to the Wild Game Feed.

Hospice of Dubuque Volunteer, Sara Uthe, was featured in the June edition of the Telegraph Herald Her Magazine. The article “The heart of a volunteer” featured four area women from the tri-states and what drives them to volunteer for nonprofits. Sara has been a volunteer with Hospice of Dubuque for five years.

Hospice of Dubuque extends appreciation to Julie Aird and her team of Mary Ann Nicks and Mary Rossman, as well as Lisa Portz and her team of Lori Slattery and Sue Ashe, for two $1,000 donations made possible by the McGraw-Hill Companies Employee Volunteer Grant Program. We thank them for their continuing support of Hospice of Dubuque and the McGraw-Hill Companies for facilitating the Volunteer Grant Program for nonprofits.

Peggy Ohmert recently joined Hospice of Dubuque as a Hospice Aide. Peggy was born and raised in Dubuque and currently lives in LaMotte, Iowa with her husband, Doug. Peggy and Doug have two sons: Allan, 24, and Thomas, 15. In her spare time, Peggy enjoys spending time with her family and friends, camping and going to the car races.

Angelia Henslee has joined Hospice of Dubuque as a Social Worker. She is a graduate of Loras College and St. Ambrose University where she received her Master’s degree in Social Work. Angelia has enjoyed working in the human services field with children, people with disabilities and elder adults. Angelia has lived in Dubuque for 16 years and enjoys spending time with her family, shopping and going out to eat. Angelia is a newlywed, has a son and is expecting another child in the fall.

Congratulations to ... Hospice of Dubuque Staff ...Dorothy Schlueter, on the birth of her new grandson, Grant Thomas, June 17. Grant is the son of John and Jennifer Schlueter.

Megan Schmitt, RN, has achieved the credential of Certified Hospice & Palliative Nurse (CHPN). This certification, which is awarded by the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses, honors a nurse for proven competency across the spectrum of hospice and palliative nursing care. Megan has been serving Hospice of Dubuque’s patients and families since 2008.

Tracey Long has joined Hospice of Dubuque as a Social Worker. She is a graduate of Upper Iowa University and Capella University where she earned her Master’s degree in Social and Community Services. Prior to Hospice of Dubuque, Tracey was employed as a social services coordinator at a local long-term care facility. Tracey is from Marion, Iowa, and has resided in Dubuque for 12 years with her husband, Curt. They have three children; Cam, Meghann and Gracie. Tracey enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family.

Common Cents Resale, 898 Central Ave, Dubuque, provides quarterly donations to Hospice of Dubuque from sales of donated items. Thank you to Common Cents for the latest donation of $765. Since opening in April of 2010, Common Cents has donated $6,792 to Hospice of Dubuque.

Hospice of Dubuque thanks volunteers, Dave Unsen and Lyle Cardy, who arrived one morning with weed eaters in hand and a mission on their mind. They cleaned and trimmed the bank in back of our office and even found enough money for lunch! They also stopped by another day and planted hostas in our patio area. They did a wonderful job and we thank them for their service.
