The ’Sconset Trust Conservation & Preservation After a busy winter working on various initiatives associated with our mission of land conservation and historic preservation ’in ’Sconset, the board of the ’Sconset Trust enters summer with excitement about our activities and planned events. The dedicated service of our board members, officers, committee chairs, volunteers, and Executive Director, Bob Felch, is much appreciated. The Trust continues to make good progress on its priorities for land conservation on the 120-acre Coffin property on Milestone Road and the 190-acre LORAN Station on Low Beach Road, owned by the U.S. Coast Guard. In addition, we accomplished our first Conservation Restriction which is described herein. Preservation events and activities continue our efforts to raise awareness and support. ’Sconset NewsThe Trust has been actively seeking a potentialacquisition of the 120-acre Coffin property, and weare encouraged by the progress that has been madeworking in close collaboration with otherstakeholders—Nantucket Island Land Bank,Nantucket Conservation Foundation, and NantucketGolf Club. While it is uncertain that a transaction willbe accomplished with the seller, our intent is to leadthe efforts of the land groups to acquire the propertyfor conservation and to invest in the transaction. Weplan to keep the membership informed about thetransaction as it plays out further this season.

The Trust also continues to closely monitor thestatus of the decommissioned LORAN Station. We are

talking directly with the Coast Guard, Town officials, our congressional representatives and the other landconservation groups while we wait for the CoastGuard to evaluate what it plans to do with theproperty. We will keep you updated on its status.

The Land Committee is also reviewing otherproperties for acquisition. We encourage our membersto identify opportunities for us to conserve openspace. It is noteworthy that 10 of the 15 propertiesowned by the Trust were donated by members. Wehope that our members will consider donating openland to the Trust, as well as talking to us about anyplans to sell land.

When the ’Sconset Trust contracted with the U.S.Coast Guard in 2007 to take ownership of SankatyHead Lighthouse, we committed to protect andpreserve that iconic structure by moving it fromharm’s way and restoring the building.

As custodians and stewards of this historicproperty, the Trust feels a strong sense ofresponsibility to ensure that the lighthouse and itssensitively landscaped grounds survive as alandmark and beloved destination for futuregenerations. While the Lighthouse’s move inland hasshielded it from imminent danger, coastal erosioncontinues to be a significant threat to the land onwhich it sits. If this is not successfully addressed, theTrust’s most visible asset will once again stand inperil.

The ’Sconset Trust does not have technicalexpertise regarding beach erosion, but recognizes theSiasconset Beach Preservation Fund’s (SBPF) effortsto monitor erosion on the island, evaluate variousmitigation options, and work with the town to developa comprehensive plan for addressing coastal erosion.Throughout the winter of 2011, the MissionCommittee and, subsequently, the Board of Directorshave considered ways in which the Trust couldadvance the island wide dialogue concerning erosionmanagement.

At its Maymeeting, theBoard agreedthat havingdetailed andscientific dataconcerning theprocess of blufferosion wasintegral to beingsteward of theLighthouseproperty.Because SBPFhas already engaged consultants to monitor erosion, the Trust proposes to partner in their endeavor and,as other landowners on the bluff have done, join inpaying for this expertise. The Board voted to budget$25,000 to be used to fund ongoing erosionmonitoring efforts. We will be doing thisindependently of SBPF but serving to defray coststheir supporters would otherwise have born.

As one board member remarked, everybody on theisland should be concerned about erosion. We at theTrust just happen to have a very visible reminder ofwhy our concern is immediate and compelling.

Preservation Report

In honor of Preservation Month, the ’Sconset Trustheld its annual Historic House Tour on Sunday,May 8th. Over one hundred participants weretreated to three architecturally significant homes,as well as to Sankaty Head Lighthouse. RobertCochran’s twelve-bedroom “Ocean View House,”built by Charles Robinson in the 1870’s, wasopen. Formerly a hotel, Cochran’s home houseshis amazing Nantucket collections of art, maps, and books. Mary and George Williams’ gothicrevival home, named “Wild Goose,” was on thetour. The Williams’ home was also built byRobinson and now highlights Mary’s handmadebaskets and sailor’s valentines. “Fo’Castle,” anUnderhill cottage owned by Jane Hathaway, was

an added treat. It remains in an amazing state ofpreservation.

We thank the homeowners for graciouslyopening their homes, and for Mary Williams andLisa Soeder for surprising us with baked cookies. We would also like to thank the volunteers whohelped guide people through the houses – seepage 10 in this newsletter

I thank the members of the PreservationCommittee for their commitment to our mission:David Bentley, Caroline Ellis, Greg Garland, DianeKelly, Jeff Lockhart, Kate O’Reilly, GeorgiaRaysman, Alix St. Clair and Emma Ward.

This newsletter ischockablock full ofinformation about’Sconset Trustactivities and eventsfor 2011. As always Idirect your attention toour mission whichincludes a key role ofeducating island residents and visitors to’Sconset about the importance of conservationand preservation principals.

The ’Sconset Trust holds 15 parcels of openland amounting to roughly 85 acres. We hold twohistoric preservation easements – one for theSiasconset Union Chapel and the other for theAtlantic House on Main Street, owned by theFremont-Smith family. As you will read in thisnewsletter we now hold our first conservationeasement on the Mathey property. Of course, don’t forget our ownership of Sankaty HeadLighthouse and this 12.5 acre bluff-edgeproperty. Our educational goals are to keep youinformed about how you can help the Trustconserve more open land, preserve historicdwelling and public/commercial buildings andfinally, how we can help the Siasconset BeachPreservation group as our two missions havemany overlaps.

If you have an idea that would help the Trustexpand its scope of influence and impact inpreserving our village, please let me or membersof our board know. Nothing ventured, nothinggained. It may be that our response will be that itdoes not fall neatly into our mission but we’llalways try to assist with a solution. Rememberwe work closely with island conservation andpreservation groups as well as the ’Sconset CivicAssociation and our local town officials. All members of the Trust past and present owe adebt of gratitude to the years of action andleadership of Perry Ruddick. We will miss him. Here’s to a great 2011.

Keeper’s LogSankaty Head Lighthouse Update

Last year International Chimney Corporation sent their restoration expert to make a post-moveinspection of the lighthouse. In November the company sent workers to replace two broken windowsand reseal all lantern house windows atop the lighthouse. Other minor repairs and touchups werecompleted. Overall, the lighthouse was found to have settled well and to be in very good shape threeyears after its move.

The Open Days at the lighthouse continue to be very popular. Two days of clear skies over ColumbusDay weekend gave hundreds of people an excellent view from the top. Most recently, the lighthouse wasopen as part of Nantucket Preservation Week on May 8th, Mother’s Day. Despite cold temperatures, fogand wind, people made their way to the top in a steady stream all day. The Trust gratefully thanks themany volunteers who made the Open Days possible.

The ’Sconset Trust board is concerned about the continuing erosion of the ’Sconset bluff. Whenmoved to its new location, the lighthouse was 58 feet away from the bluff edge. It is known that eachwinter, storms erode the bluff. The extent of the erosion is being monitored by Epsilon EngineeringCompany and the board has decided to assist in the financing of this project. As the rate of the erosionis evaluated over time, the board will consider whether appropriate action should be taken to slow theerosion in an effort to keep the lighthouse standing in its present location.

Trust News

Dee HaslamDee Haslam and her husband Jimmy are from Knoxville, Tennessee. They settled on Sankaty Head Road five years

ago after celebrating 4th of July in Sconset for several years. With three children and two grandchildren (two

more on the way), Nantucket has become their family gathering place. Dee is CEO of Rivr Media, producing

programming for networks such as A&E, HGTV, DIY, Animal Planet and WE. Jimmy is CEO of Pilot/Flying J Travel

Centers. Dee loves the work of the Trust and is interested and seeing the continued efforts in beach, land and

building preservation.

Mark FilipskiMark Filipski and his wife Lynn have been visiting the island every summer since 1985. Along with their two

grown children Russell and Sarah, they consider Sconset “home” and live at 5/7 South Road in the village. They

are active members of the Casino and the Sconset Chapel, and enjoy the immense natural beauty and tranquility

of Nantucket. Mark and Lynn are active outdoors people; they are passionate about golf, tennis and relaxing at

the beach. They appreciate the relaxed pace of life here versus the kinetic pace in the New York metropolitan

area where they live off season. Mark is an investment banker with Credit-Suisse, sits on the board of Davidson

College in North Carolina, and joined the ’Sconset Trust board last year.

Kennedy RichardsonKennedy and his wife Susan have been summer residents in ’Sconset every summer since 1978. They bought

their home on Low Beach Road in 1997. Kennedy is involved in other preservation and conservation groups

outside of ’Sconset, most notably as a trustee of Historic New England, and of the National Trust of Scotland

(USA Foundation). He and his family have been involved in various conservation and preservation efforts in

Southern Maine since the late 1800’s. Professionally, Kennedy is semi-retired, having spent 23 years running an

institutional equity fund at Fidelity from 1985 through 2008. He attended Belmont Hill School, has a BA from

Williams College, and a MBA from Harvard University.

Jim WalkerJim and his wife Deborah are from Bedford, NY. They have been coming to ’Sconset for over 20 years and have

three children. Jim first came to the Island in college and has been returning every summer since then. Jim is a

partner at Fir Tree Partners, an investment management firm located in NYC. As an active member of the

community, Jim is looking forward to making a contribution to the preservation and conservation efforts of the

Trust.
