From the Desk oF the PrinciPal

Welcome Back!

On behalf of the staff and administration of Washburn Rural High School, I am excited to extend to you our best wishes for a productive and exciting new school year. Let me assure you that the educational opportunities for students at WRHS are excellent, both by reputation and the measured accomplishments of our students. We enjoy one of the best reputations of any public high school in the city of Topeka! Last year alone, we produced three National Merit Finalists, three

National Merit Commended students, were voted "Best High School" in the Topeka Capital Journal's annual "Best of Topeka" competition and received full accreditation in a very rigorous and thorough review process through AdvancEd of Kansas. As you also know, our athletic and activities programs continue to be among the best in the State. Last year alone, we can look to State Tournament appearances in Volleyball (3rd Place), Girls Basketball (4th Place), Boys Soccer, Boys Basketball, Girls Golf (7th Place), Softball (2nd Place), Girls Tennis (3rd Place), Boys Bowling (4th Place), Girls Bowling (with and individual state champion, Carly Schmidtlein), Wrestling, Boys (5th Place) and Girls (7th Place) Cross Country (an individual state champion, Jacob Morgan, in the boys division), Boys Swimming (7th Place with individual state champion, Grant Rogers, in the 200 IM), Girls Swimming (6th Place), and Track! Our Orchestra and Vocal Music programs received the highest ratings possible at State Large Group Music Festival in April and our Debate, Forensics and Drama programs continue to flourish. As a school community, we have much to be proud of and even more to be excited about!

In the coming year, I invite you to become a partner with us in your child's education, and in doing so, learn more about their "home away from home" - Washburn Rural High School. Attend their athletic events. Go to their concerts. Ask them about their school work. Talk with their teachers. Ask how you can volunteer in our building! By developing a deeper understanding of all that is available to your students at WRHS, you will help us to unlock the extraordinary potential within each one of them. I look forward to the upcoming year with great hope and an unwavering belief in the promise of our young people. I wish all of you the very best! if I can ever be of service to you, please do not hesitate to call.

Best,

Ed Raines, PrincipalWashburn Rural High School5900 SW 61st AvenueTopeka, KS 66619(785) [email protected]

Attendance Policy

Attendance NewsDirect Line: 339-4150

Attendance Fax Line: 339-4228 (address Fax: c/o Attendance)

Next year will bring some changes to the Attendance Office which means the proper procedure must be followed when a student is absent or needs to leave school early:

1. The Attendance Office can not interrupt the classroom to pull a student out of class unless it is an emergency. Your assistance in helping us eliminate disruptions to the learning environment is appreciated. It is not advisable to wait until the last minute to call and get your student out of school—if you need to have your student released early, again please PLAN AHEAD!! You need to give the Attendance Office at least one passing time (one hour notice) to page your student so they can come to the Attendance Office to pick up their “Permit to Leave the Building” pass in between classes.

2. You can leave a voice message on the Attendance phone line for all types of absences but, do not leave a message for an immediate “time sensitive release.” You need to talk to someone in Attendance to ensure your student is released at the proper time.

3. ALL STUDENTS ARRIVING AFTER 8:00 A.M. MUST CHECK IN AT THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE. Just a reminder: students must provide the proper verification of their whereabouts when away from school for any type of medical or general appointment, long-term absences, etc. Verification must be given to the Attendance Office upon the student’s return to school.

4. Parents are responsible for calling the Attendance Office on the day their student is absent. If the absence is not confirmed within 24 hours, the absence will be unexcused and consequences will be assigned.

5. Reminder: Absences of three days or more requires that an Extended Absence Form must be completed and returned to the Attendance Office before being gone. (Students can pick up this form from Attendance.)

As always, we strive to serve your attendance needs in a friendly and positive manner. Your cooperation in following these attendance procedures is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tamara Beyer

8

A student’s attendance record is a very important part of his/her permanent record. Students with regular attendance will be more successful in their classes. Students are expected to be present and punctual for all classes throughout the year. The responsibility of school attendance is with the student and his/her parents.

When a student is absent it is the responsibility of the parents to call the Attendance Office (339-4150) on the day of absence. The call should be made before 9:30 AM. The Attendance Office is open at 7:00 AM for calls.

Any student who checks into school after 8:00 AM must first report to the Attendance Office and receive an ADMIT to class. Any student who is counted absent for first hour will be presumed absent for the entire school day if they do not report to the Attendance Office and get an admit slip.

Students who miss school because of an UNEXCUSED absence will be required to complete the daily work but will not be given credit. Exams and major assignments must be made up by the student in order to receive credit.

The SCHOOL will determine whether the absence is excused or unexcused. Board policy allows USD 437 to accept only the following as valid reasons for excusing an absence:

1. Illness- Short or long-term illness (verified by notification from doctor).

2. Medical Appointment- Appointment for medical treatment (an appointment card must accompany the student upon return and be given to the attendance clerk).

Page 9: Summer 2011 Newsletter

Washburn Rural High School enjoys a statewide reputation for educational excellence. This reputation is the product of the dedication of our student body, an outstanding instructional staff, a school philosophy of high expectations for all and diligence in minimizing interruptions and distractions during the instructional day. While not all electronic devices pose the same risk of disruption to the learning environment, it has become necessary to develop a policy that governs the use of some of the more intrusive.

Cell phones may be used before school, after school and in the cafeteria during lunch only. At all other times, they are to be turned off and stored away. If they are heard or seen during the hours of 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM, they will be confiscated and returned to the student no earlier than the end of the school day in which they were confiscated. Discipline points will also be assigned.

Repeated violations will require a parent to retrieve the cell phone and the student may be subject to disciplinary action consistent with the WRHS Discipline Policy. Cell phones containing such features as PDA's, Clocks, Calculators, MP3 Players etc. are also prohibited. The use of cell phones during lunch is a privilege and may be revoked if not used responsibly by the student body.

Administrative Notes

Respectful Use Policy For Cell Phones And Electronic Devices

ELECTRONIC MUSIC OR VIDEO DEVICES are allowed on campus and may be used at the following times: Before School During Lunch Between Classes After School

3. Family Crisis

4. Extended absences- (ie: family vacation) of the student when expressly requested by the parents or guardian and prior arrangements have been made in preparation for the absence as defined in the Student Handbook.

5. School approved activities

6. Obligatory religious observances Within a semester grading period, students must attend class, or a school approved activity, a minimum of 90% of the periods the class meets to routinely receive credit. Failure to attend a minimum of 90% will not affect the grade given in any class, but will result in no credit being granted - despite the grade - should attendance fall below 90%. If a student is unexcused absent for more than the first ten minutes of class, the student is counted absent.

A review panel is available, upon request, to determine whether or not credit will be granted if attendance falls below 90% due to exceptional circumstances. If a student or parent requests a hearing with the review panel to gain credit for a class in which absences are excessive, they will have to account for ALL absences, excused and unexcused. There will be no differentiation between excused and unexcused absences when computing total absences in any class. Exemptions from the attendance policy may be granted on a case-by-case basis upon receipt of a medical doctor’sattestation that the student’s absences were medically necessary. Other unusual circumstances may also beconsidered at the discretion of administration.

Parents/guardians will be notified by the attendance office when the student has accumulated 75% and exceeded 100% of the allowed absences for each individual class/hour. Notification will be made: 75% equals 8 absences (a Parent Courtesy Letter ) 100% equals 10 absences (Notification by mail) Parent/Students must contact Chris Ridley in the West Office at 339-4133 to request a meeting with the review committee or credit will be lost.

Attendance Policy-Continued...

Administrative NotesDress Code and Personal Appearance - Guidelines to Follow The general atmosphere of a school must be conducive to learning. If a student’s appearance attracts undue attention to the extent that it may become a disruptive factor in the educational process, a building administrator will ask the student to make the necessary changes. In the event that the change does not take place in the time allowed, the administrator may prescribe disciplinary action. The following list is not all-inclusive:*No clothing or body adornments with offensive, sexually suggestive, vulgar, profane, ethnically derogatory messages, pictures, or symbols, depictions or styles of Satanism, illegal substances, drug paraphernalia, tobacco, or alcohol.

*No articles of jewelry, or articles on clothing, which are potentially hazardous, such as chains or studded bands, or have sharp points, etc.

*No clothing or styles identified to be associated with gangs or gang activities.

*No outdoor clothing, such as headgear (hats or bandanas), sunglasses, or gloves.

*During the school day, coats/jackets are to be placed in the student’s locker upon entering the building. The administration recommends that students keep a sweater or sweatshirt in their locker for cooler days.

*No short shorts or short skirts.

*All pants and shorts are to be worn at the student’s waistline (i.e. no sagging).

*All tops and shirts must have a full front and back, full sides and over the shoulder straps (i.e. no halter tops, tube tops, bare midriffs or tank tops without sides or any other revealing clothing).

*Clothing inappropriate if any flesh can be seen starting at underarms down to mid thigh.

*Clothing inappropriate if any undergarments can been seen.

*No sleepwear

The final determination as to whether clothing is acceptable or not will be made by the administration. The basis for this judgment is if the clothing is deemed to be a distraction from the educational environment. A good question for a parent to ask: “Is this dress appropriate for a professional workplace?”

Board Policy Regarding Harassment The Board of Education prohibits bullying in any form, including electronic means, on or while using school property, in a school vehicle or at a school-sponsored activity or event. The administration shall propose, and the board shall review and approve a plan to address bullying on school property, in a school vehicle or at a school-sponsored activity or event.

The plan shall include provisions for the training and education of staff members and students and shall include appropriate community involvement as approved by the board. Students who have bullied others in violation of this policy may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including suspension and expulsion. If appropriate, students who violate the bullying prohibition shall be reported to local law enforcement.

Please be advised there will be slow moving traffic as the construction on Wanamaker will continue through October 2011. The remodeling of Gym B will be underway.

The orthopedists in the group are Dr. Richard Polly, Dr. Peter Lepse, Dr Brett Wallace, Dr. Joe Mumford, Dr. Michael Smith, and Dr. Brad Poole. Over the past 25 years athletic trainers have been available to injured student athletes. They will be advised of the severity of their injury with proper referral to a physician if necessary. They will also be advised on proper treatment and rehabilitation of the injury and given direction on how to safely return to their sport.

Once school begins, certified athletic trainer, Brad Parry, will be at WRHS every weekday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. He will also be in attendance at all home varsity events, home JV, and 9th grade football games, and away varsity football contests. Wellness Committee Wraps up Another Successful Year

The Wellness Committee wrapped up another very successful school year. The Committee’s last event took place in the lunchroom on April 28th. The Wellness Committee put on an event very similar to Family Feud, but, of course, was called the “Food Feud.” Students in the lunchroom were selected to play a random food trivia game! Winners received a $10 Gift Card, water bottle, or free lunch.

The Wellness Committee’s strongest focus this year was to cut out the items that are unhealthy, while also exchanging items that were healthier for students. This was evident in looking at the options that changed for breakfast. The cafeteria now averages 200 extra students a day since the Wellness Committee promoted breakfast at WRHS.

Wellness Committee also had their 2nd Annual Health and Wellness Fair at the Middle School in March. The event was very successful and many businesses helped in promoting their healthy products.

Other events during the 2010-2011 School Year include: • Jay Shideler - Teach 1st Graders the Food Pyramid• Healty Snack Day during Advisory• Equipment for the new Wellness Room• KFIT (for PE program to measure fitness)• Staff Biggest Bluzer

Wellness Committee Sponsor Mrs. Marcum would like to thank all of the members in the Wellness Committee for all of their time and help! “I definitely could not do this without them!”

The winner for the bank drawing this month was Kelly Livingston. Congratulations!
