ALPFAPRESIDENT AND MANNY’S LETTER

The 2011 Convention theme, Inclusion, Innovation and Inspiration, is one that

has been inspired by an understanding that we, at ALPFA, have about what is

going on around us. Today's business environment is challenged by new issues

around the economy, technology, a growing marketplace and projected human

capital shortages. Organizations have differing views on how to deal with these

challenges. One thing they can agree on is the need for great talent – people

within their ranks who have the leadership skills to face these challenges head

on. ALPFA also recognizes the need for leaders who bring innovative solutions,

who understand that inclusion is necessary to create high performing teams, and

leaders that will inspire others to bring their best to work. That is why ALPFA is

so committed to building leaders.

This is the intent behind all our offerings and the 2011 National Convention is no exception. This year's convention

will once again provide our members with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills. Our workshops have

been carefully selected with the goal of professional growth and leadership development for all our convention

attendees. At the career fair, you will have the opportunity to engage with companies that are interested in meeting

you and looking for those leaders that will bring value to their organizations. Let's not forget the networking

opportunities. Take advantage of one of the greatest values the ALPFA Convention has to offer – an opportunity

to build your network! Everygreat leader has one.

We encourage all our members to attend the convention and take full advantage of all the opportunities it presents.

Thank you to all our corporate partners for their continued support and partnership with ALPFA. A special thank

you goes to the Walt Disney Company, our convention Lead Sponsor.

The Future of ALPFA Starts Now

..............................................................................................

It may sound odd to say the future of ALPFA starts now when, in fact, next year

we will be commemorating 40 years as being the largest Latino organization for

Latino professionals and students. In 1972, the need for our organization came

from a simple fact – it was difficult for a professional with a Spanish sur name to

get their foot in the door. The aim was to bring together a group of Latino CPA’s

and form a unified voice to give Latinos the visibility and opportunities they needed

and deserved.

As we look over the past 40 years, there has been progress made, both for our

members and for ALPFA. For one, we did not start out as ALPFA – that came in

2001 when we realized that, to have a greater impact, we had to widen our reach

and the talents that represented us. It really has been in the past 10 years that we

have experienced tremendous growth in our programs, membership and corporate support. So while there is much

to celebrate next year, there is still much to be done.

And that is why I see this as a new starting point for ALPFA. While I have read and heard many success stories

from both members and corporate sponsors, we are just not where we need to be. In my recent letters I have been

commenting on the Census data; the projected growth in the Latino workforce, the impact our dollars have on the

community, and at the same time, the low numbers of Latinos completing higher education. If we started this

organization because we could not get our foot in the door, the future of the organization is getting a seat at the

corporate table, and elevating our status in the global economy.

The impact of ALPFA needs to extend beyond our membership. We need to reach many more corporations that

have yet to embrace diversity and inclusion. We need to promote higher education, and career options to our

youth, we need to promote Latinas, we need to build more Latino Leaders. As an organization in the Latino

professional community for nearly forty years, we have gained insight into the needs of our professional

community, the importance of diversity and the talent of Latinos and it’s time to affect the bigger picture.

There are much bigger things planned for ALPFA, and I will be announcing some of these at our upcoming Annual

Meeting during our Annual Convention in Anaheim. We will become the association of choice and be recognized

for our leadership, innovation and commitment to the success of our members. ALPFA will be a solution for

members, corporate partners and a global workforce.

15ALPFA IMPACTPRE-CONVENTION ISSUE

Over the past year, involvement with ALPFA on a local, regional, and national level has transformed my

personal and professional life. Last spring during my final semester of graduate school, I discovered the

ALPFA organization at UW-Milwaukee and quickly joined the student chapter. Soon thereafter, I learned of

the 2010 Annual Convention while attending a Regional Student Symposium presented by ALPFA-Chicago. I

brought news of the symposium and convention back to the UW-Milwaukee student chapter and recruited a

few others to join me on the trip to Orlando. As August approached, I found myself making the trip alone but

with a newfound confidence and optimism about the opportunities ahead. Personally, the timing of the

convention couldn’t have been worse. My wife, Luisana, had just given birth to our daughter Natalya; my

former supervisor refused to approve my vacation request and our family’s financial position was strained at

best. Countless times I juggled my hopes of experiencing ALPFA’s impact firsthand with the realities I faced

at home. Nevertheless, I believed in the personal investment I would be making and travelled to Orlando. From the moment I arrived at

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort on Saturday until the minute I left the following Tuesday, I was never bored, lonely or disappointed. Every

minute of each workshop, panel discussion, luncheon, dinner and reception provided chances to learn and network beyond my furthest

expectations. Best of all, the career fair allowed me exposure to Fortune 500 recruiters and endless opportunities. I am now preparing for

relocation to Minneapolis to begin my career with Target Corporation as a Merchandise Planning Business Analyst. Had I not attended the

convention and made a connection with a Target recruiter, the chance to work with such an innovative, energetic and inclusive company could

have remained out of reach. I look forward to the many conventions to come and a lifetime of ALPFA membership.

STORY OF SUCCESS

Jesse WaukauALPFA STUDENT

•Read the conference agenda thoroughly, and select the sessions that will be most likely to improve your skills.Stay away from the seminars you could almost teach yourself, and "stretch" by hearing about topics you havenot mastered.

•Ask a professional colleague to become your conference buddy, so you can share what you learn. Thiscollaboration will bring special benefits when you talk about presentations that only one of you attended.

•Stay for the entire conference. You never know what good information you might miss by arriving late or leavingearly.

•Stay at the conference's designated hotel. You need to be where you can enlarge your network mosteffectively.

•When you attend conference parties, realize that potential employers, clients or business partners mightobserve your behavior. You are not really "off duty."

•Take plenty of business cards, to help new acquaintances remember you.

•Tactfully collect as many business cards as you can, so you can follow up with post cards, E-mails, phone calls and appointments.

•Become an active participant, asking questions and making comments. The topics will take on new life for you.

•Meet and thank everyone who served on the conference planning committee. They deserve your compliments. And when you thank them, youwill definitely stand out as one of the few who did.

With an impressive attendance filling up the room at Blue Cross

Blue Shield of Massachusetts’ headquarters, ALPFA Boston

welcomed members of the community to participate in a panel

discussion entitled, “Latino Leadership in Healthcare: Perspectives

on a Changing Landscape.”

The event, held on Thursday, June 9th, marked the First Annual

Healthcare Summit for the professional organization, which

featured Steward Healthcare System Chief Executive Officer and

President Dr. Ralph de la Torre as keynote speaker.

The summit also featured a panel discussion with distinguished

Latino healthcare leaders who offered their perspective on the

much – discussed challenges in the healthcare industry.

Moderated by North Shore Medical Center physician, Marisela

Marrero, M.D., the panel was comprised of: Dr. Joseph

Betancourt, Director of the Disparities Solutions Center at

Massachusetts General Hospital; David Morales, Vice President

for Public Policy and Strategic Planning at Steward Health Care

System LLC; and Juan Lopera, Director of Contracting Strategy

and Analytics at Tufts Health Plan. Dr. de la Torre also participated

on the panel.

“I am very happy with the turnout, the speakers and the impressive

content that was offered at this event”, stated Joyce Beach,

Director of Diversity for event host Blue Cross Blue Shield of

Massachusetts.

“The goal of the summit was to expose our membership to current

challenges and opportunities in one of the most vibrant industries

through the eyes of one of the most prominent healthcare leaders

in Dr. de la Torre,” explained ALPFA Boston Executive Vice

President Juan Lopera.

On April 7th, Northrop Grumman (NG) hosted a networking and

recruiting event in Washington, DC to herald the move of their

corporate headquarters from California. At the event, NG focused

on their commitment to diversity and the Washington, DC area.

Though their headquarters will officially move to a suburb of

Washington, DC, they have had employees based in the DC area

and throughout the world for years. Over 200 people attended this

event, including members from other affinity groups such as the

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), National

Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and National

Association for Black MBA (NBMBA). Guest panelists for this

event were as follows:

• Sandra Evers-Manly –Vice President, Corporate Responsibility

• Darryl M. Fraser – Corporate Vice President, Communications

• Hugh E. Taylor – Vice President, Washington Office Operations

• Bob Waters – Vice President, HR Strategy and Talent Management

Also in attendance was Heather Laychak, Corporate Director,

Enterprise Talent Acquisition, who served as panel moderator.

Mr. Waters mentioned during his portion that NG hires about

10,000 people per year with an expected overall 8% attrition rate.

70% of their openings are for technical positions all over the world.

Reassuringly Sandra Evers-Manly mentioned that there are 23

Employee Resource Groups within the company and that:

“We want far more diversity in our leadership team. We’re not

bashful about that.”

The presidents of the local affinity groups were all treated to a

special meeting

with the panelists

30 minutes before

the start of the

event as well as

reserved front row

seating. A special

attendee was

Frances Garcia, Inspector General of the Government

Accountability Office (GAO). She was recognized by Sandra

Evers-Manly.

Northrop Grumman will continue its commitment to diversity as

they headquarter in Washington, DC and continue to partner with

ALPFA. And why not? As Bob Waters mentioned, “We’re a

company of immigrants.”

speaker. The theme of the event was, "How can we work together to

improve Detroit?"

Dave Bing was elected the 62nd mayor of the City of Detroit in May

2009 as part of a special election. A native of Washington, D.C., Bing

is a graduate of Syracuse University where he earned his Bachelor of

Arts in Economics and was later bestowed an honorary Doctorate of

Laws in 2006. He was also a National Basketball Association (NBA)

legend, playing primarily for the Detroit Pistons. In 1996, he was

named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players of all time.

During his keynote address, Mayor Bing drew parallels between the

challenges he faced growing up and the challenges the Detroit

community faces today in this tough economy. He talked about the five

P's that he had learned from his coach, “proper preparation prevents

poor performance,” and how he still uses it to good effect while facing

tough challenges.

Other speakers that evening were Marie Hollein, FEI National

President and CEO, Greg Johnson, NABA National COO, and Hector

Perez, ALPFA National President. Hector talked passionately about his

long association with ALPFA, and how he managed the dual

responsibilities of his professional career at PricewaterhouseCoopers

and his various roles at ALPFA through the years.

The event was a grand success with over 250 guests in attendance.

Among those in attendance were prominent C-suite executives of

various large companies, including Detroit's Big Three automotive

manufacturers. The event was widely covered by the local media.

Attendees also enjoyed the opportunity to spend time networking with

other professionals, and left the event satisfied knowing that the

leadership of Detroit was in the right hands.

MIAMI, FLORIDA – On Thursday, May 19, ALPFA Miami hosted

Kaplan Mobray to present: The 10K’s of Personal Branding. More than

150 people attended this special presentation at the Four Seasons in

Miami, Florida. During these times, where competition is tighter and

the market is more selective as to the professionals it hires, retains and

promotes, ALPFA Miami invited Mr. Mobray, an acclaimed author,

career coach, and motivational speaker, to share his personal

experiences and insights on how to distinguish oneself, enhance one’s

career opportunities and build a strong professional network through

personal branding.

ALPFA Miami hosted a networking reception both prior to and after Mr.

Mobray’s presentation. It promoted one of the overarching themes of

the event – building one’s personal brand at all times. As part of the

post-event reception, Mr. Mobray held a book signing to promote his

best-selling book, The 10K’s of Personal Branding.

ALPFA Miami President Brett Friedman kicked off the event by

emphasizing ALPFA’s mission, that of creating opportunities, building

relationships for its members, and expanding Latino leadership. He

thanked all in attendance, recognizing the initiative and commitment to

personal and professional development each in attendance was

demonstrating.

Throughout his presentation, Mr. Mobray interacted with audience

members, engaging them in the process of defining and improving their

personal brands. He consistently demonstrated why he is considered

one of the most energetic, dynamic speakers around, while serving as

an example of living according to the principles of his 10K’s of personal

branding.

Everyone who attended the event consistently praised Mr. Mobray, his

overall message and presentation, and the event itself. “Attending a

presentation or buying a book by Kaplan is something everyone should

do if you want to achieve personal and professional success” said Brett

Friedman.

ALPFACHAPTER IMPACT

In the spring of 2011, ALPFA Chicago partnered up with Junior

Achievement (JA) to help them reach their goal of impacting

410,000 students in the Chicagoland area with the important

message of being financially responsible. This year, ALPFA

Chicago had community days with two schools in traditionally

Latino neighborhoods: Madero Middle School (in the little Village

neighborhood) and Nixon Elementary School (in the Humboldt

Park neighborhood). Both of these schools average just over 97%

Latino population and 98% low income.

ALPFA Chicago has partnered with Junior Achievement because

we want to contribute to their mission of inspiring and preparing

young people to succeed in a global economy as we focus on

building strong Latino leaders. JA's hands-on programs teach the

concepts of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial

literacy to young people all over the world.

I have had the honor of volunteering with Junior Achievement in

the past, working with 3rd and 4th graders. This year, I was excited

to work with 8th graders utilizing the JA program, "Economics for

Success," that is used for all middle school children. Using this

program we were able to discuss personal finance and career

options based on the students’ skills, interests and values.

Throughout the day, the students learned about the concepts of

credit, insurance and interest, and applied their skills of decision –

making and critical thinking using fun hands – on activities.

Overall, the students welcomed the idea of learning about the

value of a dollar and the concept of good spending habits. They

also appreciated getting a perspective from a Latino business

professional. Over 800 students were impacted by ALPFA Chicago

volunteers throughout the two community days.

Pegine Echevarria’s energy and confidence could be felt

throughout the room at the Newark Club where the NJ Chapter

hosted its annual Women of ALPFA event. Pegine, author and

motivational speaker, delivered an empowering message to the

women (and few men) in the room. Her mantra.

“Be Feisty – Be Fearless – Be Focused – Have Fun!” was

repeated by everyone in the room as she elaborated on each point

with lively mannerism, humorous stories and practical advice. She

literally had the crowd cheering from their chairs and following the

steps to her “networking” dance all around their tables. So what

does it take to be a feisty, fearless, focused and fun female leader?

Lesson #1 – Be Feisty – Dedicate yourself to do your best and

communicate your needs to others. Don’t be afraid to negotiate.

Invest in yourself and understand your worth.

Lesson #2 – Be Fearless – Have the courage to be you. Say it out

loud, “I AM A LATINA!” Be committed to yourself – to be seen,

heard and noticed. Have the courage to ask for opportunities!

Lesson #3 – Be Focused – Potential is what you choose it to be.

You have to know where you are going in order to get there. If your

career plan is not on paper – it’s not real. Write it down!

Lesson #4 – Have Fun – Don’t be too serious; people like being

around other people who are engaging and fun!

Pegine’s message truly resonated with her audience. Amber

Reynolds and Jennifer De Maria from J.H. Cohn shared their

thoughts, “This is our first ALPFA event. I thought it was very

inspiring and energetic! She made it very easy to apply to

everyday life. Very feisty!”

At the end of the event, I caught up with Pegine and asked her

what final words of advice she had to share with the Women of

ALPFA. “The thing to understand is the value of who you are to the

organization. It is critical. It’s important to always focus on ‘why

they choose me’ and understand who you are. Your volunteerism

in ALPFA is a representation of being a Latina among other

professionals, as well as a visual that your company invests in

diversity. And, most importantly, you should always know your own

value.”

LIVING TO WORK OR WORKING TO LIVE:

ALPFA Hartford held its biggest and best Women of ALPFA

program to-date on Friday, March 25th. The theme for the 4th

Annual Women of ALPFA Summit this year was, “Living to Work

or Working to Live: Taking Control of Competing Priorities,” with

lead sponsor Mass Mutual. Our platinum and gold sponsors were

Aetna and ING. All of our chapter sponsors and many other

companies also participated by purchasing company tables.

The program was kicked off with a Member Only VIP Networking

Breakfast with our Lead Sponsor, ALPFA members, and invited

guests. The breakfast provided the opportunity to network with

seasoned professionals and learn about Mass Mutual. The

program continued with lunch along with warm welcoming

remarks from Connecticut’s Deputy Commissioner of Public

Health and Special Advisor to the Governor on Healthcare,

Jeanette DeJesús. Our keynote speaker from Mass Mutual,

Sonia Macias Steele, provided her insight on managing your work

and life balance with ten practical life solutions that complemented

our theme. Sonia provided a heartfelt presentation and engaged

the audience with her charming and energetic personality. Her

presentation provided sensible and valuable tips. After lunch and

the keynote presentation, this year we also offered our attendees

the option of choosing between two concurrent breakout

workshops. Attendees chose from either Managing Change or

Healthy Lifestyles. In the Managing Change workshop, a panel

of women leaders spoke on how to manage life changes such as

moving, transitioning to a new job, starting a family and more. The

panelists provided valuable insight on maintaining and advancing

your career while planning all the other moves in your life and

shared their personal stories! In the second workshop on Healthy

Lifestyles, attendees learned how personal health behaviors can

directly impact health outcomes. Attendees walked away with

tools to manage stress and make smart decisions that will make

an impact.

This year’s Women of ALPFA Summit was a huge success and

everyone left with tips on managing their careers and personal life

balance as well as tips on living healthy. The feedback from the

speakers and the attendees was fantastic and we look forward to

continuing to provide top notch Women of ALPFA programs to our

members and friends of ALPFA.

Camille A. Marcos knew since she was a fourth-grader that she

would become a lawyer. She’s also always known that doing well

and doing good are not mutually exclusive propositions.

“What attracted me to the law was my personality. I was always

seeking what was fair and just,” Marcos says. “I wanted to have a

career where I’d be able to help people, particularly in areas where

many people don’t have a voice. I wanted to be in a position where

I have the power to help others.”

Now, just four years after graduating from law school, Marcos is

the principal of Marcos Law Offices, a growing law practice that

focuses on bankruptcy, immigration, business and family law.

For many lawyers, that would be more than enough. Not for

Marcos. She devotes nearly all her personal time to organizations

that help low-income communities, non-English speakers and

others who need help navigating the legal system. “It has always

been important to me to maintain at least part of my career to help

those who are less fortunate, by volunteering a lot of my time to

organizations that help low-income clientele and Spanish

speakers, because I speak Spanish.”

She also devotes time to helping the younger generation through

a two-year mentoring program that pairs high school students with

professionals. I had a student who has now gone on to college,

and I helped her get scholarships through the program, “Marcos

says. “She has an interest in going to law school.”

She works to connect people on a professional level as well,

through her work with the Boston Chapter of ALPFA, which has

developed a series of law – focused events. ALPFA-Law provides

programming to lawyers and also coordinates with other financial

professionals.

With all she has going on, Marcos still has an eye on the future.

“My long-term goal is to build my practice and to continue to

provide legal assistance to the community,” Marcos says. “I also

always try to help those who come after me through mentoring

young lawyers and students. That is an important aspect of my

career and personal life.”

“Being an attorney makes me happy, and it provides me many

opportunities. So even though I am busy, it doesn’t seem that I am

not living a balanced life or that I am doing too much. I get involved

with things that I enjoy.”

TO THE C-SUITEAn inexperienced college student starts out

as a mailroom intern and, thanks to hard

work, dedication, and just a little bit of good

fortune, works her way up to become a

partner.

Maria Olide, who grew up in Central Valley,

California, and attended the University of

California, Berkeley, interned through the

INROADS program after hearing about the

program from a fellow student. “I wasn’t

even an accounting major, and I didn’t

know a lot about KPMG,” she says. “But I

thought it could be interesting and figured I

should try it out.” Olide spent the next three summers at the firm, starting

her first intern assignment in the mailroom and, during that time, took

advantage of as many networking and training opportunities as she could.

That approach paid off, as she was hired into the firm’s Audit practice full

time in January 1992 and quickly rose through the ranks to become a

manager.

In 1997, Olide decided to pursue an advanced degree and, after getting an

MBA from Stanford, moved to Europe with her husband and did strategy

consulting. She returned to the United States in 2004 and started looking

for a new career opportunity. But with two young daughters, work/life

balance had become a key priority. Fortunately, Olide’s past networking

opened the door to a new opportunity when a former KPMG colleague

suggested she look into joining the Advisory practice. “At that point, I had

some other opportunities at other firms, but I felt a lot of loyalty to KPMG

for giving me those opportunities early on.”

Olide joined the firm’s Advisory practice and picked up right where she left

off, with a quick rise up the ranks that ultimately led to being admitted to the

partnership in September 2007. “I never would have gotten to partner if it

weren’t for the fact that I had extraordinary support from the partners I

worked with. So now I feel like it’s my turn to focus and give back.” One of

the ways Olide does this is by serving on the Corporate Advisory Board of

the ALPFA Silicon Valley Chapter. Olide adds, “I have served on the

Corporate Advisory Board for the past couple of years. In that role, I have

worked with the Board to provide guidance and support for their various

programs. One of the most significant programs we offer is the Women of

ALPFA, and I also served as a panelist for one of our events.”

Today, when mentoring younger professionals, Olide has a simple

message: “Work hard, but not at the expense of who you are. Make sure

you don’t compromise your values.”

ALPFA’s Annual ConventionALPFA GRADUATE RESOURCES

44 SUMMER 2011 www.alpfa.org

We are excited to launch a new educational event for our members and convention attendees: the Product Pavilion/University Forum scheduled for

Sunday, August 7th, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. with a unique focus on Graduate Education. This is a special opportunity for current students and

professionals to gain additional insights on obtaining an advanced degree.

“The purpose of this event is to expose Business Schools to ALPFA’s talented Latino pipeline and for our members to grasp hold of the many benefits of

pursuing a graduate education,” said Pamela Ravare-Jones, Chief Operating Officer for ALPFA. Our attendees will benefit by meeting Top MBA Business

Schools throughout the country and conversing with admissions and recruiting representatives. Participating Universities include UCLA – Anderson

School of Business, The University of Virginia – Darden School of Business, Cal State LA – Graduate School, and Duke

University's - Fuqua School of Business, to name a few. For a full list of participating universities, attendees can view the

convention website at www.alpfa.org.

According to a recent article published by our Strategic Partners Bell Curves, there is brighter news on the horizon for

MBA students seeking post-graduate employment. According to the MBA Career Services Council, both on-campus

recruiting and postings for full-time employment for MBA graduates were up from spring and fall 2010 numbers.

The results were generated from MBA CSC's spring 2011 Recruiting Trends Survey, and show that 76% of

respondents indicated an increase in on-campus recruiting. Similarly, 86% indicated an increase in full-time job

postings. Both numbers speak to increasing demand for highly qualified MBA graduates, and are in line with other

positive job and salary indicators in the field.

When I started my career in 1999 in Marketing – Strategic Services at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, I became aware of the need to increase

my business knowledge. I obtained my undergrad degree in Anthropology and International Studies from Iowa State University, which was great but

limiting if I planned to continue in the business field. In these unique fields of study, I learned in-depth research skills, the elements that make up human

culture, and the evolution of culture and society at both a local and global level. My undergrad degree gave me a good foundation, but it did not include

knowledge of how business decisions are made and the necessary strategies to put them in place. I soon realized that my continued success in the

business world required that I go back and fill this educational gap.

Thus, I started my MBA in International Business Management at DePaul University, in the fall of 2001 on a part-time basis. My business knowledge

increased from the onset. I learned how to read a balance sheet, determine performance metrics on key projects, work as a team to develop

comprehensive strategies, analyze case studies and determine necessary excellence standards within companies. I was delighted to find that I was able

to incorporate my new business knowledge within my existing comprehension of human culture and behavior in order to run a successful organization.

After graduation in 2003, I had the pleasure of using my MBA education as I took on additional leadership as part of the Diversity Council at my company.

I also assumed leadership on the ALPFA Chicago Board which contributed to my passion of helping the Latino community. As I expanded the practical

application of my new education and skills, I was confident that I could take on greater business responsibility. So in 2010, my new education and

business confidence played a key role in my becoming the first Executive Director of the ALPFA Chicago Chapter. On a daily basis, I utilize my formal

MBA education when managing my chapter projects. It was a huge decision to pursue an advanced degree, however, the personal value and learning

obtained was most beneficial to my career today.

How is the GMAT exam evolving?

45ALPFA IMPACTPRE-CONVENTION ISSUE

• How quant-heavy is your post-MBA career likely to be?

•How good is your GPA? Was it earned in a major that required

alot of quant or analytical skill?

• When was your last math course, how hard was it, and what

grade did you earn?

• What is the average GMAT score (and standard deviation) of the

entering MBA class in the last five years?

How important is the GMAT score in my application?

Indeed, a new GRE exam is launching this August.

Highlights include:

• No longer a section on antonyms;

• Fill-in-the-blank added to math and some questions will have

multiple correct answers;

• Scoring scale range changing from 200–800 to 130–170;

• At first, the new GRE will require a long waiting period for

receiving scores. People taking the exam in August will not

receive their scores until November.

How is the GRE exam evolving?

In June 2012, the GMAT will remove one of its two essays and

replace it with a 30-minute section called Integrated Reasoning.

Highlights of the new section may include:

• Sort and filter a spreadsheet to identify data trends among

multiple columns and rows;

• Analyze a graph (e.g. regression line superimposed over data

points) and discuss patterns in the information;

• Study a series of business memos and draw conclusions.

A brand manager will not be held to the same quant standards as

an investment banker. A 3.5 major GPA in Physics will speak more

about your quant abilities than a 3.5 major GPA in Art History.

Earning an A in a college Calculus course outclasses a 3 on your

AP Calculus test. And, lastly, some schools are just more flexible

when it comes to the GMAT score. Each business school is

different and may choose to focus on other parts of an individual’s

application. In conclusion, the GMAT is not the centerpiece of your

application. However, it always helps to dominate this exam.

“MEET THE FIRMS”

PREPARING FOR THE ALPFA CONVENTION

ALPFA Seattle’s 2011 “Meet the Firms” event was a great success with 100+ attendees. For this

annual event, ALPFA partnered with NABA and ASCEND. It was a unique networking event that

allowed students to ask a panel of professionals questions about their careers, recruiting, and the

firms in general. Firms represented at this year’s event included PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte,

Ernst & Young, KPMG, and Moss Adams. Being able to hear multiple perspectives on the same

questions added greater value than just networking with one professional at a time. As some

students are still developing networking skills and confidence when approaching professionals, this

was a good opportunity for these students to hear about the professionals’ experience without

having to directly approach them. The event was a good mix of networking, conversation over

dinner, and the panel session.

The responses from the panel participants were quite helpful to the students. They seemed candid,

honest, and gave good insight into what to expect when beginning to work at one of the firms. It was

especially interesting to hear about the overseas experiences some members had to share – as these are not always brought up in

networking events. As a student, it is always helpful to hear about a professional’s experience and how they arrived to where they are

today. It helps guide some of our early decisions that can have a profound impact on our future. Events such as “Meet the Firms” provide

the opportunity for us to ask questions, make connections, and learn from each other.

The convention offers opportunities to get ahead in your career, but you need to be prepared, and

beyond the Career Fair. With these helpful tips, you’ll be ready to tackle the convention and make the

most of it! See you in Anaheim.

1. You want to be prepared at all times; you never know who is observing you, so always have your “game face” on.

No guts, no glory.

2. Research, Research, Research. Huge component at the convention; learn your companies of interest, before you

arrive at the convention. Be ready.

3. Business cards-if you don’t think you need them. Wrong you do! (vistaprint.com is a great option)

4. Bring plenty of resumes and keep one or two on hand at all times. You never know when you’ll need them.

5. Attend workshops!

6. Ask questions at the workshops you attend. You’re already there, so be sure to get noticed.

7. Prepare your elevator speech or branding pitch helps for a smooth intro about 45 seconds to 1 minute long. To

start your elevator speech: What makes you unique? What short story illustrates a successful outcome that you have produced or want to accomplish?

8. Find a balance between day/evening time events. Attending a culmination of both will grant you lots of exposure.

9. Get your professional wear out, it’s very important to appear polished at all times. Your attire will fluctuate according to the time of day i.e., workshop

versus social function. Pack for both scenarios. To get a good idea of attire, take a look at last year’s online picture gallery.

10. Treat everyone like a recruiter – you never know who they are or what they do! There’s a method behind the madness; make sure you come prepared

with one.
