HONOR ROLL OF DONORS Honor Roll of Donors

Gifts Received March 1, 2010 – June 14, 2010

Optimist gave me a home, structure, and a place where I felt safe. I came to Optimist in October of 1958 courtesy of the Juvenile authorities. I had been running around out of control and without adult supervision, so I was picked up and sent to Santa Ana Juvenile Hall. One day they brought me to the Boys Home (OYHFS) in Highland Park and asked me if I wanted to stay. I said yes. It was certainly better than Juvenile Hall.

I had a disjointed childhood. Here I knew what to expect. I got a chance to deal with other people and kids my own age. I got to go to school.

By now I have traveled all over the world but whenever I can, I come back to Optimist. It is near and dear to my heart. If it were not for Optimist, I would surely have taken a wrong turn.

I left Optimist in 1960 after finishing High School and went to the Army for 32 years. The army felt comfortable and continued the structure and grounding that had its roots at Optimist. We raised the flag every morning and I learned to have reverence for the flag. We were organized into squads and we had responsibilities. In the army I had input into army policy relating to public affairs, something I believe I got a feel for from my days at Optimist.

I am now retired from the army. I have a BA degree from Western Illinois University and an Associate of Science degree from NY Regents. I became a skilled technical associate and worked in network administration at Olympia Washington. I have two sons, ages 20 and 25. One of them has two children and one is about to get his masters degree in electrical engineering.

Where Are They Now? Ian Knight – Former Resident (1958-60)
