As I sit here writing, I finally feel like summer
is arriving. With the past few weeks of rain, I think we were all starting to feel the effects. But, (fingers crossed) today is a beautiful and balmy 80 degrees and has me thinking about all the possibilities!
{Letter From The Editor}
I’m hopeful that the rest of the summer will be like today because you may not have noticed but there are oodles of great events going on in the area. These events are not just about fun in the sun with your pups, but many are fundrais-ers to help support our areas homeless animal shelters and rescues. Given the state of the economy, these shelters can really use your support, and if there is one thing I’ve learned over the years it’s that giving of yourself by volunteering or donating gives back tenfold. I know many of you are strapped for cash or looking for jobs, but sometimes the best thing to do is to extend a hand and then enjoy the pleasure you feel when you’ve helped someone else in need. Now if there is another thing I’ve been reminded of lately, it’s that after you have given of your time, you should also make time for yourself. If you’re reading this, chances are you are lucky enough to share your life with a pet, which means you already know how great it is to take a relaxing adventure with them. In honor of pampering yourself and your pets, we have featured a great article on visiting Block Island with your dogs. So, if you’re short on funds but want to feel like a million bucks, think about a day trip to Block Island where for the cost of a ferry ride, you’ll feel like you’ve arrived in paradise. Whatever you do this summer, we hope you relax, de-stress, and remember the important things in life.

According to a recent statement from the ASPCA, the H1N1 virus, unfortunately known as “Swine Flu”—is not likely to jump the species barrier again, and start infecting cats and dogs. “At this time there is no data demonstrating any risk of dogs and cats contracting this strain of the virus,” says Dr. Louise Murray, the Director of Medicine at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Hospital in New York City. The Swine Flu And Your Pet
Dog SnatcherDogs are often used to fight crime, but one opportunistic caninedecided to turn the tables on that arrangement. The perfect place for aheist? A grocery store. Forget banks! Cash doesn’t taste good. After staking out the front to make sure he had a getaway route, the dog sauntered in through the main door like he owned the place. He even gave one cashier a friendly sniff, as caught on security cameras. Waltzing straight over to the pet food aisle, the dog snatched a rawhide bone. But then, just as he was making his way out the door and planning his life in crime, the store manager blocked the exit. “Drop it!” he commanded. At this point, the shrewd thief did a quick assessment. Hmmm … the manager wasn’t holding a rolled-up newspaper, and he only had two legs – no contest in a chase. The dog couldn’tsee how the manager could reclaim the loot, so he bolted and hasn’t been seen since.

Brooke Mayo will tell you that her career as a photographer started with dogs. She actually had an interest in dogs
longer than photography, but a series of dog portraits from her uncle really piqued her interest in capturing dog’s moments with a camera. “Combining the best of both worlds; photography and dogs, has allowed me to grow as an artist.”
After studying photography at Appalachian State University and The University of Western Sydney in Australia, Mayo worked with Joyce Tenneson and Lois Greenfield in New York City. Traveling to some of the most fascinating places on earth allowed her to gain experience and solidify a love of photography. During this time, Mayo also realized that her childhood home was a place she wanted to call “home” again, and moved to North Carolina’s Outer Banks in 2003.
Brooke Mayo has been photographing weddings, portraits and dogs for more than six years and is recognized as one of the Outer Banks’ lead-ing photojournalists. She is currently producing an underwater art book called, Diving Doggies: A Celebration of Dogs at Play, which documents “diving dogs” at play. Brooke is also offering destination doggie shoots, traveling around the country photographing dogs on land and underwater.

While a major part of Mayo’s photography business is weddings, it’s the “Underwater Dogs” project that truly captures her heart. “I thrive on the unseen moments underwater, those few precious seconds that are missed observing playtime above water. Taking my camera below the surface of the water allowed me to explore another world that creates so much joy for dogs.”
Mayo lives in North Carolina’s Outer Banks with her husband John Wright, a winemaker and her dogs Weebler and Biskers.

As a successful garden designer and gardener in the late 1990’s, I designed many gardens for weddings as well as worked as a garden designer for a golf
course. While I still putter in my own garden, my love of dogs seems to have outweighed my love of plants. But with plenty of trial and error, I have come up with some very productive ways to enjoy both. Believe it or not, you can have both dogs and attractive landscaping just by becoming a bit creative, but dogscaping does come with a few compromises.
Hardscape Dogs and lawn grass don’t mix well, so for small areas, consider switching from a grass to hardscape. Hardscape consists of stone walls, brick patios, tile paths, and wooden arbors. Anything used in landscaping that is not part of the softscape can be considered a hardscape element, including water fountains, statues, large rocks, bridges and yes, even pink flamingo’s. Dedicate a special place in your yard for pets that have passed away by using statues, flowers, and stepping stones. this is a nice way to memorialize pets that have crossed over to the rainbow bridge. If you use lumber in any of your de-signs, make sure it does not contain preservatives and is not treated with CCA, which has been linked to disease. Stone and masonry are great for dog landscaping because they minimize the mess dogs make through urination, digging and wear & tear. Crushed stone mulch is is another good hardscape. It maintenance-free, holds up to dog traffic, and provides a sharp look.

switching to a different type of grass. Some grasses hold up better to paw traffic than others. A cool-season grass you may wish to try is Kentucky bluegrass. Using a tougher type of grass will solve only one lawn-care problem encountered in landscaping with dogs: wear and tear on grass. It will do nothing to solve the problem of “dog spots.” Dog spots are the yellow spots on grass caused by the nitrogen and salts in dog urine. Urine is alkaline and contains salt that slightly alters the soil pH. There is a type of “green carpet” that solves the problem of dog spots: clover. Clover lawns have advantages over grass lawns. Clover doesn’t stain the way grass does after being subjected to dog urine. I have also seen some useful peeing fire-hydrant for dogs to pee on… plastic fire hydrants are approximately 18” X 8” and are also an excellent conversation piece. Affix the hydrant to a spot on your lawn where you would like your dog to pee regularly. Do not let poop sit in your yard; try always to pick it up soon after the dog eliminates. Having a doggie poop bag sta-tion in the back yard makes clean ups fast and easy.
Fertilizer & MulchDuring the spring and summer people fertilize their lawn to keep it healthy and green. Fertilizer itself is not bad; but for animals it is definitely bad. Be extremely careful using fertilizers for lawns or plants when you have a dog yard. When fertilizing your lawn, do the front and the back sections at separate times, so your dog can have one yard. Keep dogs and cats away from newly fertilized lawns and gardens and away for pesticides, too. If possible, keep your dog in a fenced backyard without chemicals. Too many pets become sick and die after eating plant food or fertilizer. Before adding ornamental plants to your yard, find out if they’re toxic to animals. Your dog should wait at least 24

hours after you fertilize, to be able to use the lawn. NEVER use Coco mulch in your yard as it is toxic to dogs and many dogs are are attracted to the scent and will eat the mulch.
Fences and Borders for Dog-Friendly Yards One way to keep dogs away from the plants in your yard is to build fences around them. Plant some flowers behind a white picket fence, giving your yard an English country garden look. Raised beds work well and are easy to fence around. Mulch that’s uncomfortable or uneasy to walk on will discourage pet traffic where you don’t want it. One idea is a thick carpet of pine cones in front of the raised beds.
How to create the path of Least Resistance for Dog-Friendly Yards If a fence surrounds you yard, don’t try to grow plants in the area next to the fence. Dogs are territorial; their favorite path in a fenced-in yard will be right along the edge. Unsightly “dog paths” are the result of this very predictable behavior. Rather than fighting it, go with it and plan your yard around your dog’s predictability. An easy way is to install stone walkways over already existing dog paths. Now every-one is happy. The dog still has its path, and you have a better looking yard. Lining the pathways with soft materials pine needles, leaves, wood chips, bark chips etc. is a good idea. Uncomfortable paving will send dogs on different paths.
DiggingSome dogs are just going to dig. One solution is to add a sandbox in another section of your yard. When you see your dog starting to dig in an unapproved area of the yard, clap your hands loudly to interrupt the dog in action. Then immedi-ately take him to his approved digging area, and praise him for digging there.
What about container gardens? Container gardens are a wonderful solution for pet people, and they are easy to maintain. Vegetables can also be planted in containers. One of my favorite con-tainer’s to create is an herbal container that I keep on my steps near my kitchen door. Be creative using hanging baskets & window boxes. Growing plants in pots can also discourage the neighborhood cats from using your garden as a kitty toilet. It also helps fend off slugs. If you’re growing berries in containers, it’s easy to put netting over the plants (or move the pots) so the birds don’t get all the berries before you have a chance to eat them.Pine Tree, Maple Tree, Forsythia, Mimosa Tree, Aucuba, Birch Tree, Butterfly Bush are some sustainable trees and plants that have made it through years of dog trampling and peeing in my own yard.
Teaching good backyard behaviorDo not punish a dog for making a mess in the yard. Correct your dog only when you catch him in the act. Teaching your dog good behaviors will help him focus on learning what you want him to do, rather than what you don’t want him to do. When your dog engages in an undesirable activity, redirect him to a permissible activity. Dogs make messes because they have nothing else to do with their time. • Play with your dog in the yard; give him long walks daily (off the property for mental stimulation) • Provide him with safe, outdoor as well as indoor toys. My dogs love to hang out on an old wooden picnic table. It makes them feel like king of the mountain and

gives them an elevated platform to check out their scene from a higher view. Engage your dog’s mind by teaching him commands in daily sessions of 10 to 15 minutes each.Another great idea is a portable agility training for back yards which is great fun for owner and dog alike. Summer time idea is to install an in-ground fish pond to use for your dog’s swimming pool. They are cheap, easy to install and it also looks much better than the blue plastic kiddie pools most people use.
SafteyDo not banish your dog outside. The safest place for dogs to stay is indoors. Dogs can easily overheat and go into heat-stroke very quickly. Pay close attention to what your dog is getting into in your yard; many dogs eat rocks which can be dangerous. Chewing on garden hoses can do more than damage your hose, it can lead to internal obstructions requiring immediate medical help from your vet. If the plants in your yard have any diversity, then you prob-ably have poisonous plants in your yard. Many if not most of the common landscape plants contain parts (leaves, berries, etc.) that are toxic.

Block IslandI should first start by telling you that Block Island is one of my favorite places on earth! From the beautiful beaches and breathtaking vistas to the wonderful restaurants and bars, this island is a vacationers dream. But in my opinion, taking your best friend is what truly makes it a vacation. With a population of just 1000 residents and untold numbers of dogs, this 7 mile long, 3 mile wide island is a true paradise offering you and your pup the time of your life!
Where To Stay With Your DogWhile I think Block Island is an uber dog vacation spot, there are only a handful of places that you can bring your dog overnight. But, I found a few notable inns which are steps from the ocean and welcome dogs of any size. The first on our list is

The Gothic Inn, which is situated by the sea in the heart of the historic district, combines the conve-nience of location with the warm hospitality of a family run country inn. Innkeepers Toube, Ken, and Bennet Wohl are not only incredibly welcom-ing, but they are also avid dog lovers. Guests with dogs are welcome to stay in the inn’s annex build-ing that has 4 apartments. Apt. 11, where I stayed, has 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, a fully functioning kitchen and cozy sitting area. What I love about this place is not just the proximity to the beach and town, but the beautiful back yard complete with grill, outdoor shower and sitting areas. After a day of running around the beaches and bars with the pups, I truly looked forward to the ease of rinsing “everyone” off in the outdoor shower and just relaxing in the grass. And if that were not enough, no need to worry about breakfast because each morning guests

What To Do With Your Dog You will find plenty to do with your pooch while visiting the island, however I highly recommend you do not bring animal aggressive dogs. While there is a leash law in town, it’s not unusual for a local dog to come walking up to say hello at anytime.BeachesOne of the biggest reasons I love taking my dogs to Block Island are the beaches. They are clean, clear and beautiful, and yes, dog friendly!Block Island’s dog ordinance allows leashed dogs on any beach any time. And guess what, they also allow unleashed dogs on all beaches with only one exception, Crescent Beach. This is the area on the eastern side of Block Island from the break-water at the Surf Hotel to the northern bound-ary of Mansion Beach . The city ordinance states that unleashed dogs are not allowed on Crescent Beach in the summer season (June 1 to October 1) after 9:00 a.m. and before 6:00 p.m. But, are allowed off leash in the off season (Oct. 1 to May 31) anytime. Also, when the endangered “Piping Plover” birds are nesting in the sand dunes (Spring & Summer), you will be reminded to stay out of the dunes.
Kelly Walsh, creator of the website “Block Island Family Vacation,” has a specific page dedicated to visitors bringing dogs (www.block-island-family-vacation.com/dog-friendly.html). She tells us
that while Block Island beaches are open for dogs, it’s not recommended to go where there are lots of people.” “I do run into problems here, even though the ordinance allows dogs to be off leash on most beaches, you still get some flack from people on the beaches.” What I try to do as a year round resident and dog owner is be responsible for my dog and respectful of others who are trying to preserve the island. Some dogs need to be on a leash for their own safety as well as others, while other dogs clearly listen to commands and can be off leash and close to their owners.”HikingThere are miles of great trails to take your dog hiking on Block Island. The dog friendly Green-way Trails is great exercise for both of you. Cau-tion: You may not want to hike the trails in the off season especially if your dog likes to chase deer. Bow Hunting begins in October and hunting sea-son lasts all winter. Check the newspaper for dates. Afternoon Cocktails If you’re more of a people watcher, there are some great locations to just plant yourself with your dog and people watch all day. One of my new favorites is Paynes Dock in New Harbor. There is a great bar with outdoor seating located directly on the dock. It’s a great little nook surrounded by amazing sailboats, yachts and seaman galore. There are a few other bars in town that will let you lounge with your pup while sipping a cool summer cocktail; The Albion Pub, Captain Nick’s (daytime only), and Aldo’s, just to name a few.Farmers MarketIf you happen to be on Block Island on a Saturday or Wedenesday, you may want to stop by the dog

It’s a great place to see, smell, and buy some local food and art. ShoppingThere are lots of great little shops in town next to Old Harbor; unfortunately your dog is not normally allowed inside, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Sometimes the shop keepers will watch your dog just outside for you while you peruse their store. Don’t forget to stop by Block Island’s only pet boutique - Island Dog, to pick up an Island Dog T-shirt or gift.Kayak The BayIf you are lucky enough to have a dog who is comfortable on a kayak, I encourage you to take a sunset tour around the bay and throughout the network of waterways. This is such a nice way to see boats, wildlife and even some backyards. But do not take a dog that is not a seasoned kayaker, as there is a great deal of wildlife that would be quite enticing to a dog who is not used to staying in the boat on command. There are a number of kayak rental locations that are easily found on the island, or do what I do and bring your car full of kayaks and dogs onto the ferry! It does make things a bit easier and cheaper, but you have to book way in advance and have parking lined up with your hotel.

while you can’t bring your dog inside, there are a number of casual restaurants and sandwich shops that welcome your well behaved pooch at the table. Some of my favorites are: Juice ‘n Java, Aldo’s, The Ice Cream Place, The Albion Pub, The Post Office Bagel Shop, Harry’s, Rebecca’s Take Out, or Old Harbor Take Out. I also recommend that you plan at least one night out sans doggie and try my very favorite island restaurant - Eli’s. Don’t worry, even though you’ll miss your dog, you will still be greeted by a large black lab statue and lots of cool dog art inside :-)
Getting ThereThere are basically 2 ways to get to the island and that’s by boat or plane...and they all welcome dogs. The Block Island High Speed Ferry and Traditional Ferry (401) 783.7996 (cars allowed with reserva-tions) which runs from Pt. Judith all year long and from Newport RI in the summer . You may bring your leashed dog on the ferry, free of charge. Note: while the High Speed Ferry is dog friendly, they
only allows dogs on their outdoor decks. If the weather is bad you may opt for the “slow boat” so you can be inside.New England Airlines offers daily flights to and from Block Island (year round) from Westerly, RI. A limit of 2 dogs per flight is free of charge for dogs that fit on your lap. Otherwise you would pay a child fair of $38 for your large dog (unless the flight is not fully booked). For more info call: 1-800-243-2460. When I go for longer than a day trip with the dogs, I find it much easier to bring all the dogs and gear in the car. It’s not recommended to bring cars to the island, but if you’re staying at the Gothic Inn they have a parking lot that you may use.
What if your pet gets sick?A very important element to think about when traveling anywhere is to be prepared for an emergency. In researching this story, I found that getting your dog off-island after the ferry’s and flights have closed for the evening is no easy task, if not impossible. The island does have medi-

There are part-time vets on the island, but most only see resident dogs by appointment, and are not equipped to handle a serious emergency. Dr. Maryann Simonelli (401) 466-8500 is sometimes available on weekends for house calls and if the timing were right could help in an emergency. Again there are no full time vets on the island, so if your pet gets sick, DO NOT WAIT! Make arrangements ASAP, to get your pet on a flight or ferry and head to your vet or a vet off island, such as Seaside Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Judy Glowitz of Seaside, can pick your pet up at the ferry during normal business hours. However, if this is a serious emergency, I suggest getting to the nearest 24 emergency hospital.

Out Of The Pits And Into The Ritz Recognizes It’s New Graduates!
Congratulations to the SKDPA!
The South Kingston Dog Park Association’s (SKDPA) dinner and silent auction fundraiser on June 18, 2009 was a huge success! Between 143 ticket sales plus funds raised through Silent Auction they raised an astonishing $11,317, with a net figure of $8,303 after expenses, which will go directly to the Dog Park. Combined with other activities, including their presence at Belmont Market, T-shirt sales and brick sales, the SKDPA has raised $13,247 since May 20, 2009. Susan Sancomb, Chair of the fundraising event, would like to thank everyone who participated in the planning and execution of this successful fundraiser.While these funds have brought the SKDP as-sociation much closer to their goal they are not finished yet and still need your help. Jillian is a BWB (big white bun or New Zealand to be precise). She is a super sweet, big gal and you have to love the BWB personalities! Great family buns! We do not know much about her as she was taken in a neglect seizure but we estimate she is about 1.5 years old.
Daisy is one of the four Giant Angoras avail-able for adoption. She is a big gal, good with her litter box and spayed. She is gentle and playful. Daisy is a little over 1 year old. Daisy would be a great first bun to someone dedi-cated to learning her grooming needs.
Sandi (Ms. Sandi-Pants as referred to in the shelter) is a sweet bun. She is estimated to be about 2 years old, she is spayed and she will likely be a very good bonding candidate. Sandi is a good girl and she relishes her freedom.
Maggie is a big gal and is about 3 years old, spayed and good with her litter box. She is an excellent bonding candidate, probably one of the best female bonding candidates at Sweet Binks right now. Maggie is about 8 lbs. and she is VERY sweet.

Poppy is a very handsome 13 week old boy. He got his name because when he jumps while he’s playing, he “pops” up! He is a sweet boy and loves to play with his sister Hannah. He is a wonderful brother and a joy to love. He does well with other cats too. He will let you hold him, but only for a short while, since he’s always in a playful mood.
Griffin is a wonderful, sweet dog that has manners, looks and charm than look no further. We have your man. Griffin is about 1 1/2 years old. He is currently enrolled in our award winning program known as “Out of the Pits and into the Ritz”. He walks wonder-ful on a leash, knows all his basic commands, loves the company of other dogs.
Bijou is 11 months old. She is on the tiny side like my sisters. Our former owner moved out of our apartment and…well left us. Then we got kicked to the curb like trash. We were so lucky to be able to come into the shelter because they are always so full. I am very lovable and I love getting pet and attention by humans.
Princess Chloe is a sweet dog that is vocal. Chloe loves to talk to you. Princess Chloe is only a year old. She has lived with twins since she was an 8 wk. old puppy. She does know some basic obedience also. Princess Chloe is a sweet & intelligent dog who will make a delightful and a loyal companion.

Dear Friends,
It is with a stunned and heavy heart that I write to tell
you that Akeba, my almost 14-year-old Keeshond, died
suddenly in her sleep last night. Having gotten a clean
bill of health from the vet a month ago, and showing no
signs of her age except for her deafness, it has come as a
huge shock to all of us.
In my heart, she is now running in a field somewhere,
with her sister Sky, brother Morgan, mother Aria, her
pups Diva and Baci, and all her other friends and family
members who went before her. Magee, the Kees-Shep-
herd mix who has been her life’s companion and best
friend, is sadly lost without her, and glued to my side,
which is a comfort to us both.
