Sr. MaryRinaldi’s

LetterDear Friends,

This issue of Partners In Giving was prepared aftertwo wonderful feasts, Mother’s Day and Father’sDay. Sr. Claire and the Sisters at St. JosephProvincial Center tell me that the overflowing basketsof roses and lighthouses in their chapel are a constantreminder of the tremendous gratitude we have foreach of you. Fervent prayer ascends each morning, noon, and night for each of you, family and friends.

Some news to report:

• The break-in at the St. Joseph Provincial Centerleft us all shaken but, thank God, no one washurt. Between donations and in-kind gifts all ofthe stolen items have been replaced, and asecurity system has been installed, donated by theowner of Total Security, Inc., in Long Island City,NY, who saw the story on the news. Thank youfor your notes, calls, prayers of support, anddonations (including one, above, with a sweetaddress that somehow reached us!) The elderlySisters are most grateful and took incrediblecomfort knowing you were there for them. Godbless you!

• With classrooms darkened for the summermonths, 8 Summer Camp Programs are underway at 5 locations. You can still help become a“Lifesaver” for inner-city kids. See page 3. Andwe are grateful again this summer for the doubleblessing from our “Mr. V” in Virginia and hismatching gifts for camp scholarships.

• Our website, www.salesiansisters.org, now has asecure site for the convenience of online giving.See page 24. And we have received employer-matching gifts from Merck, Chase, CatholicConference, ADP, GE, and Fuji Film.

MAKING HEADLINES AROUND THE PROVINCE

A Pound of Change = A Ton of Love!

The “Dames of Mary Help” sure know how tochange things for the better – literally! One ofthe Dames, Beverly Rohde of Saddle River,

NJ, had the novel idea to challenge the Mary Help ofChristians Academy community to donate their loosechange for a good cause – a “campaign for change”!

From May 24, the feast of Mary Help of Christians,to June 9, Graduation Day, students collected andweighed in coins (at right) in the hope to gatherenough to send a young lady to school.

So how did they do? The campaign raised $1,500!

Thank you, one and all! Truly, by working together,we can make a significant change!

Did you know that one ofthe easiest and commonways to give is through a

gift in your will or living trust?

Your gift may be made in yourname or to memorialize a lovedone. You may choose to leave aspecific dollar amount, aparticular piece of real estate orpersonal property, a percentage ofthe estate, all or a portion of the

“Let someone take myspace,” our dearest Sr. Josephine Carini

blithely said. Ah yes, your “space”but never your “place.” No, hers is aspecial place and her shoes are hardto fill. Although she was mymentor, my amah (spiritual mother),the wind beneath my wings, I amfar from having her deep gift, hervisionary insights.

But having been asked to resumewriting for Partners in Giving, Ihappily continue, knowing that ourdear Sr. Josephine (who passedaway on August 11, 2006), willguide the thoughts and reflections I will share with you.

In this first article, I would like toremember Sr. Josephine. Recently, Icame across a letter she had writtento me in January 1994, when I wasgoing through a particularly difficultperiod in my life. Even after 13years, it is as timely and helpful as itwas then, and shows the deep loveand empathy of her heart.

I would like to quote some passagesfrom it:

“The Beloved is with you as yousuffer through the desert of mind, heart, and soul. There are times ofsoul searching and there are timesof mind wrenching, but a time forseeing the invisible is also present. We need to understand not only thegeneral issues but the issues we facetoday and tomorrow . . .

“Behind the closed night are the highmountains. Behind the mountains of

Millennium MeditationMessage from Heavennight, the dawn is coming. Behindthe silence breathes the Father, theLover. The solitude is inhabited by apresence and above us waits rest andliberation. He, my Lover, was bornon a dark afternoon, on a barrenhill, covered with blood, wheneveryone repeated, ‘The dreamer has died; the dreamsare over.’

“From now on,Jesus will beresurrected in you each morning. He will blossom on the dead leavesof your autumn. Yes, your Loverwill take you by the hand and leadyou to the transforming hills ofcontemplation . . .

“The stars, red or blue, sparkle frometernity to eternity. Never growtired of shining. On dry land andover mountains, plant the seeds ofmercy, hope, and peace. Do notgrow tired of planting, though youreyes never see the golden shafts. One day the poor will see them.Walk. The Lord will be light foryour eyes, breath for your lungs, ointment for your wounds, goal foryour path, reward for you.

“Speak. His words are light and lifeto all everywhere.”

Indeed, Sr. Josephine was a womanfor all times, ever honest andupright and sincere. She possesseda heart that could feel with others, aheart that listened intently to theunspoken words and respondedwith the wisdom gleaned from herdeep spirituality.

She was God’sgift to us and weare forevergrateful that shewalked among usand shared herselfso profoundlywith us.

As illness took over Sr.Josephine’s bodymore and more,

rather than adiminishment there came aprofundity and a peacefulness thatattracted as a magnet. Her heartwas pacified after her first brushwith death and all fear seem to havegone from her. She was awaitingher encounter with Jesus, as ayoung woman awaits her lover.

And, perhaps, this truly was Sr.Josephine’s final message to us. Tosee death not as an ending but as abeginning; not as a separation but asa union with the One who has lovedus from all eternity.

And isn’t this precisely the messageof Jesus’ resurrection? It is amessage of joy, of hope, of trust.Let us take the message to heart!

– Sr. Mary Terzo, FMA

“See death not asan ending, but as abeginning; not as aseparation, but as aunion with the One

who has loved usfrom all eternity.”

On a recent trip to Italy, Sr. Karen Dunn’s mother, Mrs. Eva Dunn, joined her adopted Sister, Sr. Lucy Roces, outside St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

Editor’s note: We share this beautifulletter with our Partners in Givingreaders as a wonderful expression of thepower of the Adopt a Sister Program!

Dear Sr. Mary,

How could I not renew myspiritual adoption of Sr. FrancesGumino?

Through my mother, the Lordput me in the path of Sr. Frances, and also Sr. Mary Palatini,Sr. Mary Ruiz, Sr. Nancy Zingale,Sr. Winifred Elley, Sr. Ida Ossi, and Sr. Julia Marzorati, who arenow in heaven.

It’s almost 42 years since Igraduated from Mary Help ofChristians Academy. Those 7 yearsmade an indelible Salesian markon me, and I cherish that blessing.

What a wonderful gift I havereceived in knowing that Sr.Frances keeps me in her prayersand thoughts, and in return I dolikewise. It is so soothing to hearfrom dear Sr. Frances. Our healthmay not be the best, but itcertainly is a good feeling to knowthat our prayers “pinch hitting”for the both of us. Yes, I say thisin the Salesian sense of humor!

I thank you and all the SalesianSisters for your prayers andwonderful works. God bless you.

Farewell, Sr. Veronica Milyo

On April 13, our dear Sr. Veronica Milyo wascalled to her eternal rest, at the age of 96.

Sr. Veronica’s parents emigrated to the U.S.from Austria, settled in Elizabeth, NJ, andlater moved to Mahwah, NJ. Veronica was thesixth of the seven children. When she wasnot at home or playing outside, she was atthe Salesian Sisters’ convent for choirpractice, for meetings, or just to hang out.

She spent time with the Sisters, and met thenovices who came to visit. Soon the “I’d like tobe one of them” became “I will be one ofthem.” She found her way to begin her religiousformation program and professed her first vows in1934. She continued her academic preparation, first atFordham University, then at the University of San Francisco. She spent her life asan educator in our Salesian schools from New Jersey to California. She was adedicated, firm teacher who matched wits with the brightest students.

After many years of service as a teacher and principal, Sr. Veronica moved to theSt. Joseph Provincial Center to organize the books in the library. She said that whenthe library is in place, she would be ready to move to Heaven. The Salesian Sistersrest assured that the Lord has welcomed Sr. Veronica to her place in Heaven.

Rest in Peace, Sr. Mary SchuchertOn April 28, our dear Sr. Mary Schuchert

was called to her eternal rest, at theage of 90.

Mary was born in Muchenhof,Germany, the last of four daughters. When she was four years old, herfather lay at the threshold of death. He struggled against leaving his littlegirls. Mary remembers that he toldher mother and herself to leave theroom. Almost immediately, he calledthem back. Asked why, he replied, “Icould not bring myself to accept deathand leave my little girls orphans. Then, when you left a bright light shone in theroom. It was Our Lady.” He concluded,“Now I can die in peace since the Mother ofGod Herself promised me that She would care for mychildren.”

Active at all times, intelligent, and beautiful, Marybecame a good friend to many and special to her ownfamily. She remembered her father’s words before hedied. To her it meant that God was calling her for aspecial mission in life.

Ifelt blessed during the years Iknew Sr. Mary and often relied

on her prayers to help me througha personal or family crisis. Thankyou for allowing me to know her.

Westbury, NY

Ifeel both sadness and joy today.Sadness over our loss of dear Sr.

Mary, and joy over having had 9 years to know and grow to lovedearly this very special Sister.Through her letters flowed bothlove and warmth. I always lookedforward to her letters, especiallywhen her letters were a little thick, for I knew she was adding somespecial reading material to them.

I have to smile as I think of Sr.Mary up there in Heaven. As sheprayed for all her sponsors while

here on Earth, I can only imagine hernow up in Heaven, running back andforth to Jesus and Mother Mary withher numerous prayer requests. I feel inmy heart she is still very busy prayingfor us all. What a joy to know we willsee her again when we someday comehome to Heaven.

Des Moines, IA

My life and my husband’s andchildren’s lives changed

dramatically from the first day weheard from Sr. Mary. Her letters andnotes uplifted us and got us throughwhatever adversity came our way.How blessed we have been, howgreatly our Lord must love us to sendus such a champion, such a prayerwarrior. She would encourage us topray always, to have faith that ourLord loves us and that He would send

When Mary was in the sixth grade, one of herfriends gave her some literature on the

Franciscan Order. A little card fell to theground. On it were the words, “St. John

Bosco’s work: girls and boys of 15welcome.” Mary says that she quietlypocketed the card, even if at thattime she had no idea who St. JohnBosco was or why she kept the card.

When she was 17, Mary approachedher pastor and asked about St. John

Bosco. Her pastor discouraged herbecause the Salesians were far from

their town, and besides they onlyworked with boys. However, he promised

Mary that he would inquire.

Mary found herself along traveling to Bayen in searchof the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco. She made herfirst profession in Casavona, Italy, in 1938.

When asked about her secret to happiness, Sr. Maryshared it willingly. “That One in the tabernacle,” shesays. “Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the solution foranyone, for everything, and for always.”

Salesian Youth Report

Editor’s note: We share here with ourreaders the inspiring speech by Saluta-torian Olga Luaces of the Class of 2007 of La Salle High School in Miami, FL.

Today on our graduation day, wehave an opportunity to reflecton four years of unforgettable

memories. I have no doubt that we areall filled with excitement and are eagerto move on to the next phase of ourlives. But deep down, it is hard tobelieve that we are leaving La Salle,a school that has forever made animpact on our hearts.

La Salle is truly an amazing school. And after being a student here forfour years, I have come to realizewhat makes La Salle so great: the factthat it is a Salesian school. To be aSalesian school means to follow theexample of St. John Bosco and hisOratory. The Oratory was the placewhere Don Bosco raised orphan boysand taught them about God. It was ahome that welcomes, a parish thatevangelizes, a school that prepares forlife, and a playground to have fun. LaSalle has shown itself to possess allthe virtues of Don Bosco’s Oratory.

La Salle has been a home to me inmore ways than I can count. Whenwe first came to La Salle as freshmen,we were scared and nervous that wewouldn’t fit in. Together, we werethrown into a whole new environ-ment, and as members of the in-coming freshmen class, we were thebabies of the school. Then, slowly, astime passed, we learned to embracethe school and each other. Acquain-tances developed into great friend-ships. Our teachers taught us aboutlife with the same passion that theytaught their own subjects. We learnedto trust each other, and as each day

passed, we became aware of how wewere slowly becoming part of onefamily.

La Salle has given us manyopportunities to cultivate and nurtureour faith. Fromencounters andretreats like ETC toclubs like Mindo, wehave been able todeepen our relation-ship with Christ andserve those lessfortunate than we are.

The La Salle mission extendedbeyond academics, and has made merealize the presence of God ineveryone I see and everything that Ido. We discovered so many talentsthat we never even knew we had. Iam confident that we will be able toapply our newfound strengths to anychallenging situation we may be facedwith in the future.

La Salle has been an incredible

example of what Don Bosco’sOratory should be in today’s world. Now, as we leave La Salle andprepare to write the next chapter ofour lives, it is up to us to follow DonBosco’s example. It is up to us torecreate and live the Oratory.

Wherever life takes us, we shouldmake every place we go a home thatwelcomes. When it’s cold outside, wemust show the world the warmth ofour smiles and never be afraid to meetnew people, make new friends, andlaugh like lunatics. We mustcontinually strive to be a parish thatevangelizes.

Keep God close to your heart, for Heis our Father and will always be therewhenever we need Him. Help thosewho are most in need and show thelove of Christ through your wordsand actions. Know that you canaccomplish anything as long as youset your mind to it. Let your dreams

stay big, and yourworries stay small.Excel in all that youdo, and rememberto share the talentsyou have been givenwith others.

And last, but not least, make time to enjoy life and have fun.Travel everywhere, sing like you arein the shower even when you arewalking down the street, and dancelike nobody’s watching.

Class of 2007, I leave you with this.Do not forget La Salle as youcontinue on your journey through life.Never forget Don Bosco’s Oratory inCoconut Grove. It will always be herefor you; it will always remember you.Thank you.

What Makes My School Great? It’s Salesian!

Salutatorian Olga Luaces

“Wherever life takesus, we should makeevery place we go a

What a great day it was for students atCorpus Christi School in Port Chester,NY, when Ray Negron came for the

school’s “Yankee Day Celebration”! Students, teachers, and parents were dressed in their Yankeebest to welcome Ray, who spoke from his heart tochildren about making right choices in their lives.

Ray’s own life was turned around by George Stein-brenner when Ray was caught marking up thewalls of Yankee Stadium with graffiti. Steinbrennermade him a bat boy and that changed everything. He talked about staying away from gangs anddrugs, the value of true friendships, how importantit is for kids is to get a good education like that atCorpus ChristiSchool, and stay-ing close to God.

Ray cameprepared withsigned baseballsand rings to use asprizes for the kidswho answeredquestions aboutthe Yankees. Heasked a girl and aboy to come upand sing apatriotic hymn.

Eddie Wilson, an8th grader, read him a few words related to Ray’s book,The Boy of Steel. This book is about Michael Steel whohas brain cancer and becomes a Yankee batboy for a day.Since he is weak, he gets help from some Yankee greats:Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Roger Maris, andMickey Mantle.

Having read The Boy of Steel, 7th and 8th graders sharedtheir sentiments about the book, and that’s how thefollowing words came about: “Your book, The Boy of Steel, touched our hearts. This story, full of hope and courage, has a message for all of us. It teaches us to strive in theface of difficulties. It inspires us to stick to our goals, liveour dreams, and never give up. It makes us appreciate life

and live each moment of it fully. It reminds us that everything inlife isn’t always fun and happy, that we have a responsibility tohelp others who really do suffer. We want to help. We are eager tobe involved. We thank you for thebeautiful reality of this story.”

Students and their families madedonations amounting to $800, which they presented toRay to send to agencies that use funds for juvenile cancerresearch, as well as to assist families of such children inneed of help. These funds are being sent locally toGiantsKids in New York State.

After about two hours, Ray sat down and autographedone book each per child and teachers, as a gift to them.We are grateful to the benefactor for donating the books, and to Sr. Margaret Rose Buonaiuto, our 4th grade teacher, who is a close friend of Ray’s from St. Joseph School inTampa, FL, for inviting Ray to visit.
