On Wednesday August, 2, 2004, the weather in the Philadelphia area was hot and humid with nary a breeze, but this did not deter the crowd of about 75 gath- ered to partake in the blessing of the Hermitages. The ceremony on this very sacred ground was quite beautiful. "Today we come with gratitude and joy to ask God's blessing on these hermitages and on those who will inhabit them in their desire to meet God in solitude amidst the beauty of nature." Under the direction of Sr. Christa Marie Thompson, OSF, Ph.D., The Franciscan Spiritual Center in Aston, PA has successfully constructed the first six hermitages and they are due to open later this month. In 1999, the Franciscan community in Aston engaged an architect and began an extensive planning process to develop the hermitages and surrounding grounds in an ecologically sensitive design that emphasizes the belief that the earth should be respected as a pre- cious gift from God. The hermitages are on the grounds of the Assisi House which has been used for many years as a retreat center. The overall goal of the Hermitage Project is to provide a place of solitude and quiet for men and women of all faith traditions. St. Francis himself sought out the solitude of a variety of hermitages in the Italian countryside. The hermitages were designed and sited in a way that treads lightly on the earth. Through the use of appropriate building materials, sensitive site and facility design, and landscape restora- tion, the hermitages demonstrate a holistic approach to design which con- siders the environment, energy conser- vation, indoor air quality, and resource conservation issues. Each Hermitage was constructed with cement siding which is in keeping with the Franciscan philosophy of respecting natural resources. They also installed bamboo flooring as a more earth friendly alter- native to wood, carpet or vinyl. They were built on a hillside which makes it feel as though each building is suspend- ed in the treetops. They are furnished with a bed, full bathroom, recliner, and a kitchenette. Windows abound to take in the view. Their charm is further enhanced by an open porch which has been equipped with a comfortable chair and footstool. The view into the woods is magnificent. While each of the six buildings were blessed with holy water, the group sang several refrains of the Cancticle of the Sun which rings with praise for the sun, wind, rain, fire, and earth. The chorus is as follows: The heavens are telling the glory of God, And all creation is shouting for joy. Come dance in the forest, Come play in the field, And sing, sing to the glory of the Lord. Whoever would have thought that I, areasonably grounded and pragmaticperson, would have become an entity-buster? I don't mean to make light of asubject, which is the essence of spirit.Well, yes, I do. There is no circum-stance that can't be improved with a lit-tle light and laughter, including unwel-come presences in houses.

First of all, what is an entity? The term, "discarnate (not-embod-

ied) entity," partly explains it. Ashumans, we have a body and an intan-gible part, referred to as the soul, spir-it, spiritual essence, being, energeticcomponent, or life force. This essenceis the part of us that cannot be meas-ured or quantified, although there havebeen studies revealing that when a per-son dies there is a slight but measurabledifference between the live body andthe dead one after the spirit has depart-ed. So an entity is the being (some saythis is the real self) that is left after aperson dies. Entities can be located ina space and can be assisted to transitionwhen permission is given.

What to you mean, "when permission isgiven?"

Entities can be located by dowsing(also called 'divining'), which is the useof tools (a pendulum, L-rods, one'sbody, or other) to obtain informationnot normally available to the consciousmind. When using the dowsing systemto locate an entity, permission mustfirst be asked, i.e. "Can I, may I, shouldI dowse about ... at this time," and

obtained before dowsing. Many FengShui practitioners are trained dowsersbecause this skill is necessary in orderto detect energies harmful to the client, which need to be remedied.

Who, or what gives permission? It is believed that permission (or

other information obtained throughdowsing) comes from a Higher Power, from the pool of the collective uncon-scious, from a cosmic, universal con-nectedness, from the higher self, orfrom all of these-or, that the informa-tion being sought already exists; it isjust a matter of tuning into it.

When an entity does transition, wheredoes it go?

I do not presume to hypothesizewhere we go when we die. But in myexperience with entities is that theytransition to somewhere, probably to arealm outside our earth's third dimen-sion. Most entities transition, but somedon't. Those entities with whom I'vecome into contact, and who haven'ttransitioned, have issues connected toemotional states experienced whenthey were alive.

Why is it that some entities transition andsome don't?

In my experience, the normal cir-cumstance is that an entity transitionsto their next appropriate destination, wherever that may be. However, somecircumstances apparently cause anentity to become stuck in the world ofhumans. Such circumstances can be a

R.D. Chin is an architect and inte-rior designer who has been a FengShui practitioner for about a decadeand has become a very popularteacher and consultant both inEurope and the USA. He resides andworks in both his home town NewYork City and Amsterdam and hastraveled to China and the Far East tostudy the roots of this ancient art. Heis a student of Professor Lin Yun,stands in a specific Buddhist tradi-tion, and tries to make Feng Shuiaccessible to the western "scientific"mind. Chin combines "laws" of FengShui with a love for people and beau-ty. The spirit of caring about peopleand their environment speaks allthrough his book Feng ShuiRevealed: An Aesthetic, PracticalApproach to the Ancient Art ofSpace Alignment.

The earliest Feng Shui books avail-able in the West were not so attrac-tive and were hard to understand. Then came the wave of publicationsin which the expert tries to explain tous "how it really is". Their design wasmore or less advertisement art, including stock photography. Chin'sbook is the first book with only orig-inal and beautiful photography. It isthe first well designed book that you

There are five types of structures thatwe live and work in. All buildings fallinto one of these categories. How is thetype determined? Classic Feng Shuiuses the ancient method of flying starsand overlays calculations from exactcompass measurements of a buildingand date of construction. This createsthe building’s precise energy blueprint. What’s revealed is an energy patternthat affects anyone occupying thatspace.

Wang Shan, Wang Shui is Chinese forgood for mountain and good for water.Good for mountain means good forpeople. Good for water is good forabundance (example, money).Occupants are happy with their fami-lies and experience prosperity.Businesses have good people energy(employees and clients) and are afflu-ent (don’t struggle for stature andwealth). This is the most desirablestructure as you can imagine. It’s wellworth the wait to find this building, orinvestment to build it.

Double Sitting means double earth. There’s double people energy, but lackof abundance. People living in thesebuildings get along, but struggle finan-cially. They can experience career andfinancial problems. Businesses havehappy employees, but may not be ableto make payroll due to poor accountsreceivables.

Double Facing means double water.Abundance is good, but at the expenseof people. Occupants in these buildingshave money to travel and enjoy materi-al possessions, except no significantrelationships to enjoy them with.Health issues can also surface. Youth inthese buildings often are delinquent.Business is profitable, but employeesdon’t feel valued. Morale issues affectproduction. Know anyone who worksin an environment like this?

Reverse means not good people orabundance. There’s always some sortof struggle; divorce, bankruptcy, fore-closure, business moving in and out, residences where people move everycouple years.

Locked Building affects all the build-ings above. These can become lockedwhen they don’t have the elementalremedy to prevent it. Many Chineserefer to a locked house as an impris-

oned house it restricts movement.People or abundance influences canbecome locked, or in rare cases bothcan lock at the same time. When astructure has abundance locked theflow of money to the occupants isrestricted. This usually precedes a buy-out or merger.

Occupants of a building that is lockedon people will experience continuinghealth and relationship problems. It isvery difficult to get pregnant in a housewith a people lock. A business in abuilding with a people lock will havedifficulty keeping employees andattracting new customers.

Timing is crucial. Classical Feng Shuiuses the Chinese solar calendar (beginson 4th or 5th of February each year). All buildings experience annual (oneyear) locks and construction-cyclelocks (20 years). Most families andbusinesses can survive an annual lock, but it’s difficult to survive a 20-yearlock.

Millions of buildings locked orunlocked on Feb. 4, 2004, and will lockor unlock February 2005, each year. This explains why neighborhoods canstart to pick up while others decline; or

businesses that did poorly will start toexperience success while others thathave done well will start loosing clien-tele. This also explains money, healthor relationship problems that occur in acyclical pattern when you’re in thesame building for years.

When you’re aware of the type ofstructure you’re in, and whether a lockis approaching, remedies can be imple-mented to ward off negative energy.Bad influences can be neutralized. Wemake choices based on the knowledgeat hand, and there are influences thatwe can’t see or touch until they areupon us. Be proactive versus reactive. It’s a prudent approach to life and theeconomy.

can put on your coffee table if youwant to show it off. But most impor-tant is that Chin, instead of teachingtop-down, shares his personalapproach. Feng Shui Revealed basical-ly is a tour through fourteen consulta-tions in which the writer simply showswhat he saw, what the questions ofhis clients were, what solutions hecame up with, and how the resultswere.

We get to see a Frank Lloyd Wrighthouse, Manhattan designer's studios,ocean-dune and river houses, andsuburban homes. Old lofts and newarchitecture. Single people and fami-lies. Stockbrokers. Fashion designers, architects, art collectors, and contrac-tors. A diversity of locations, interi-ors, gardens, and styles of furniture, decoration, and building materials.

Through the collaboration with co-author Gerald Warfield, it reads likea novel and leaves an impression thatyou can do something positive aboutyour home without complex calcula-tions, hiring a consultant or takingFeng Shui classes. Chin and Warfieldhave made the application of FengShui more accessible than mostbooks to date have accomplished. The consultations are preceded by ageneral and unpretentious introduc-tion to Feng Shui. The last part of thebook discusses Feng Shui "cures".These are all the possible things onecan do to improve less than happyenergy flows. The tone of respect forpersonal and cultural meanings andthe large volume of experience resultin a humble and cautious, well illus-trated description of possibilities. Itadheres to the spirit of his teacherLin Yun that each person's freshthinking is the best source for anycures.

Good reading for both advancedFeng Shui students as well as anybodyinterested in home improvement butcouldn't be attracted by the FengShui hype. Chin's open approachinspires you to make your home yourcomfortable, safe, and happy castle.

In authentic wind and water spirit, the Feng Shui Alliance held it's annual din-ner cruise on the magnificent Horizon Yacht this past July 16th. We sailed forfour glorious hours in perfect summer weather along the Hudson River. LadyLiberty stood majestic as ever as we saluted her in glory.

Everyone enjoyed the excellent food, drinks, Feng Shui tips and conversationnot to mention the relaxing chair massage, astrology and angel readings.

This cruise is offered to raise public awareness about Feng Shui with partialproceeds going to the Tomorrow's Children Fund. Everyone left with a FengShui goody bag and enough Feng Shui fever to last until next year.

Members of the group pause for pictures while enjoying the view on deck andbefore beginning a sumptuous meal in the dining room.

Do you need to protect yourself whendoing this work?

Entities can be needy and care shouldbe taken to prevent them from enteringyour personal space. I do not wear anyprotection except my intention toassist, and my knowledge that the lightis stronger than the darkness. Is it pos-sible that I could encounter an entity ofdarkness stronger than the light Icarry? I think not and I have faith not,but I really don't know. So far, that hasbeen enough.

However, faith and belief are bestaccompanied by reason and caution. Ifyou are careless, an entity can jumpinto your personal space, causingheadaches and other symptoms. Thishappened to me occasionally, at first, and I would have go to my (late) friend,Marcus True, to clear me. Later Ilearned to clear myself by forcibly and

firmly ordering the entity away.

What tells you an entity is there, and howdo you locate it?

Many times people will call me for aFeng Shui consultation because theyfeel uncomfortable in their home oroffice for some unknown reason. Afterour initial interview, I check the chi lev-els in different rooms. I know fromexperience more or less what the chilevel should be. If it is markedly lower,I check for an entity. If I suspect anentity is present, I use my dowsing L-rods to locate it. The rods will lead meright to it and I use my transition proto-col where the entity is located.

How is this work related to Feng Shui? The goal of Feng Shui is to connect

heaven, the person in their building, and earth in perfect harmony. TheFeng Shui practitioner does this in partby facilitating the highest possible chi(life force) flow in the person's buildingto best support health, vitality, andopen paths to their goals. Entitiesblock and lower the chi flow that needsto benefit the live person, and can haveother negative effects. Helping entitiesto transition not only raises and harmo-nizes the chi energy in a space, but it isalso an assist to the entity, facilitatingtheir own path.

Are you ever afraid? No more than I

would be con-fronting any personwith a body. Afterall, my intention isto help the entity, aswell as to help theperson in theirhouse

What do you do tohelp an entity transi-tion?

I stand at theplace where I locatethe entity, and swingthe pendulum in thisspace. I ask if it isappropriate for meto assist the transi-tion of this entityand ask for permis-sion to assist thisentity's transition. Ifpermission isreceived, I trace thehorizontal figureeight, and address-ing it directly, inform the entity to

keep out of my personal space. I ask ifit is a discarnate entity and if it knows itis dead (in rare cases it doesn't knowand must be convinced). I ask if itknows it is stuck. It usually does. I askif it wants to transition. Usually, itdoes. If not, I bring it to the under-standing of why it needs to transition. Then I follow my protocol to affect thetransition. It would be inappropriatefor me to tell you my entire protocolbecause mine is interwoven with myspiritual belief and experience. Itcomes from my whole being which Ithink helps me to become a clear chan-nel through which energy can move.

How did you get into this work in the firstplace?

At one time, I was practicing with mypendulum measuring chi levels inrooms and seeing what affected theselevels. In my own house, I would ask ifthere were negative items in a roomand then check objects with my pendu-lum for negative energies. If I foundsuch an object, I'd remove it and thenre-measure the chi level in the room tosee if it came up, which it did. As Iwent about the house, I came upon mygrandmother's chair in the foyer, whichhad a strong negative hit. It occurredto me to ask, "Does anyone sit in thischair?" I got a strong yes. Startled, Iput the chair out in the garage, notwanting an entity in my house, but Imissed the chair. So, a few days later Imarched out to the garage anddemanded, "I would like to speak to theentity that sits in this chair. Is the enti-ty here?" "Yes," it answered. I thought,"Oh boy, now what?" I used my L-rodsto see for sure where the entity was,and yes, it was very much at home inthe chair. I asked it a lot of yes and noquestions using the pendulum. I'd seenMarcus help entities to transition, sowith that guideline I made my own pro-tocol and helped this entity to transi-tion. The chair went back into thefoyer and this work has been coming tome ever since.

Life, death, and the workings of theUniverse are such a mystery. Isn't itwonderful?

I am pleased to be work-ing with the marketing andadvertising for theInternational Feng ShuiGuild. My focus will betwofold - First, to raiseawareness of Feng Shuiand the Guild to the public.Second, to offer our FengShui professional members and schoolsvaluable networking connections, businessguidance, and spotlight opportunities.

I am working with the Quarterly publica-tion, Website marketing, and the new IFSGGrapevine.

The Quarterly remains our professionalFeng Shui newsletter and relates toadvanced Feng Shui information, education-al articles, business advice, membershiphighlights, and will continue to grow. TheOnline Marketplace is a true value at$199.00 a year, and is a great place for mem-bers to sell product and generate targetedadvertising promotions. The Grapevine willconnect with the public as free monthlyFeng Shui tips and events.

We will have a free signup feature on thewebsite, and this format is a great way forprofessional members to reach the publicthrough tips and event promotions.

I look forward to bringing some Li - fireenergy into the Fame and Relationship ofthe Guild, and welcome your help in anyway.

Blessings ~ Renae Jensen

One of many essential goals for this summer is to getthe new office location in Portland, Oregon workingefficiently. I have had many conversations with mem-bers and leaders on our new toll free number. We arelearning together to navigate the website and clean upour records. It is getting easier with the help of Joeand Christine Budzowski our webmasters, so give it alook!

I am also updating or recreating many documents and am revisingthe Chapter Guidelines (Bylaws) which will be sent by email to all ourDirectors. They will eventually be available online for any member toview. The revised Code of Ethics will be included. Our internationaldirector Susana Bastarrica is planning to translate them into Spanishand French so that we can more easily welcome chapters outside theUS.

The fabulous new 2004-5 Board met August 5-9 in San Luis Obispoat the International Feng Shui Conference organized by Roger Green.I am working closely with the Board to build credibility for the IFSGand to revitalize the spirit of our mission.

Please know that all your contributions and energy are greatly appre-ciated as we bring harmony through our integrity and our Feng Shuiwork in the world.

Blessings ~ Anne Mansfield

I'm honored to be serving The Guild asDirector of Education. Our focus is to create acollaborative/empowering environment-onethat demonstrates the principles of Feng Shuithrough education and practice. We willapproach this by establishing certification stan-dards for schools and practitioners. If thatsounds a bit daunting...it is! Your participation

in this effort is crucial, whether school or member.

Current projects are: 1) Assemble a committee to focus oneducational needs; 2) compile a glossary of Feng Shui meth-ods/history and post this to the website; 3) compile a glossary ofcommon Feng Shui terms and post this to the website. Task oneis accomplished. Member schools were solicited, and individualswho expressed interest in education were contacted. There arecurrently 18 committee members. If you're interested in joining,we'd be glad to have you. Commitment at this point is a month-ly conference call for one hour. From there it depends onendeavors you've signed up for. Tasks two and three are underway. If you have descriptions or a good resource, please for-ward.

There are many initiatives the Education Committee willtackle. To mention a few...research teleseminars for meetingsand educational events; compile a comprehensive list of schoolsand post it to the website; define a practitioner tract accordingto key Feng Shui concepts, level of study, experience, and con-tinuing education; develop an accreditation application and ver-ification process; define a practitioner code of ethics, complaintand disciplinary process, and code of practice; and much more.

I hope you're pleased with my progress. If you'd like to con-tribute, or have suggestions or comments, let me know.

Namaste ~ Diana Garber
