Key Questions & Ideas/ Creative Entry Point

Which countries are involved in the Olympics? What can you find out

    about them?

Use Google Maps to create an online factsheet for these countries.

Create a photography exhibition on My London.

    The Olympics

    Year 4 - Summer 1

    ICT

Control - Using an online program, Scratch, to create computer games.

Link to topic creating a computer game with monsters that catch/eat

other animals/creatures (Link to Anglo-Saxon story Beowulf set in

    Scandinavia).

Photography Chn take photos using tablets and use a PicsArt app to edit

photos. They change the colours in the photos to create differentatmospheres, and choose a favourite for display. Chn explain the choices

    they have made.

Google Maps Chn use Google Maps to share information with others.

    Trips, visitors, events and displays

    Dragonboat racing

Photography project around Hither Green for exhibition

Photography in Greenwich for persuasive leaflets

    Archery workshop

    Ukelele for Beech and Elm

Knowledge and understanding of the world (i ncluding RE,

    geography, history, DT)

Geography/RE Chn use online and offline resources to

research information on a given country. They learn to locate

a range of countries on a globe/world map, and learn to use

maps to show information in different ways e.g.

temperature, location, landscape, food etc. They learn to

write information texts and then use Google Maps to share

information with others, by adding text to a map of their

chosen country. These maps are then shared using the

    MLE/class blog.

DT Chn create a pop-up leaflet for their persuasive writing

on why people should visit London. They think carefully about

the best pop-up feature to use and explain their ideas. They

use trial and error to develop their leaflets for presentation.

Chn use recycled materials to make flags and add information

about their country to create bunting for the classroom.

Communication, language and literacy (including talking/speaking & listening, writing, reading, spelling,

handwriting, drama and links to other areas)

    1) Stories from Other Cultures (3 weeks) Using Tales of

Wisdom and Wonder, chn explore stories from different

cultures. They look at the structure of short stories and

compare cultures and people. They take a character from one

culture and explore putting them into a different story. How

would the character react? Chn write their own short story

from a culture of their choice for a Creative Writing

    exhibition in the partnership.

    2) Information/Persuasive writing (4 weeks) Chn explore

information leaflets and tourist brochures. They learn

persuasive language and the layout of leaflets and posters. In

Geography, they create information texts about different

countries using Google Maps. In Literacy, they create a

leaflet entitled: Why come to London? Using photographs

theyve taken from Greenwich they describe a favourite part

    of London to a tourist.

    Science Friction

Chn learn to measure force using forcemeters, and use this to measure the

amount of friction on different surfaces. They discuss the advantages and

disadvantages of friction, also investigating water resistance and making

parachutes to demonstrate their understanding of air resistance.
