It was not fat, it was not heavy And folk began to stare. “We cannot eat it, that is flat! And such outlandish feathers as that Why, who could ever wear?”


They flung it into the river brown, A pity the creature died!”

With a smile and with a frown, Thus they did in London town; But all the children cried. Given below is a summary of the poem. Fill in the blanks with suitable words to complete the summary. Use only one word for each blank.

In modern times, we take mostly faulty and unbalanced diet like refined, synthetic and processed foods and also white flour, white sugar and foods with chemical additives. As a result, the digestive system of our body gets disturbed. Stomach, which is the most important part of the digestive system, suffers mostly by the faulty diet. It becomes inactive with the functioning of digestion in an improper manner. Later on many diseases and disorders appear in the body with the loss of health. By the intake of faulty diet, the toxins start building up in the body. Due to the presence of these toxins, the waste matter gets blocked and the process of digestion and assimilation slows down. The best remedy for this problem is fasting. It is the oldest natural therapy which has been practised since ancient times. Fasting, in simple words, means living without food. The body also gets physical, mental and psychological rest with less eating. Fasting for a day is good for health. Fasting improves digestion, assimilation and cleansing of all parts of the body. It tones up the entire system. The liver becomes active to remove toxic matter. The digestive system gets rest and starts functioning properly. It also increases natural resistance to diseases.

Man‟s dependence on plants is indispensable. It is this dependence for food, shelter

and clothing that has led him to explore all possible ways to preserve plants from

being lost to the ravages of natural and man made calamities. Accordingly, man has

used different methods to overcome these calamities. While doing so, scientists hit

upon a technique whereby plants can not only be restored from being lost, but can

also be developed into a complete plant from a small plant part. This technique,

called tissue culture subsequently proved to be a boon for mankind. Basically, tissue

culture is a technique by which small pieces of different parts of a plant body are

grown on a nutritional media under completely sterile condition. These plants divide

and gradually develop either into unorganised mass of cells called callus or after a few cell divisions differentiate to form full-fledged plants.

The concept of tissue culture dates back to 1878 when a German Botamist Vochting

said that from a small plant piece, a whole plant can be regenerated. Later, other

scientists like Haberlandt in 1902 postulated that cultivation of artificial embryos is

possible depending on the nutritional media.

According to a study by the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI), pollution in India


could rise to alarming levels by the middle of the century unless urgent action is

taken. The study estimates that under current conditions, the suspended particulate

matter (SPM) load in air would rise to 52 million tons by 2047, up from 17 million in

1997. Methane released from landfills would increase from 7 million to 39 million

tons during the same period. The study cites industrial production, motor vehicles

and fossil fuels as the biggest potential contributors. All this contribute to global

warming and acute respiratory problems.

One solution to the problem is the increased use of EVS short for electrically

powered vehicles. An EV is an environment friendly vehicle which runs on an

electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery. It is nearly noiseless and emits no harmful exhaust. EVS are easier to service and maintain, and are ideal for “stop-

start” city driving conditions. The absence of gears and clutch makes them

extremely reliable and easy to drive and manoeuvre on congested roads.
