George Mardirossian, PhD
Genesis Healthcare Partners
2466 First Avenue, Suite B
San Diego CA 92101
Dear Dr Mardirossian:
I wish to advise you that at the recent meeting of the Board of Directors of the
Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP),
the Board voted to defer accreditation of your residency program because of certain
concerns about the program, which are enumerated below:
1. Residency Standard 2.1 states:
“The clinical facilities offering this training must be accredited by the appropriate
healthcare accreditation organization.”
Upon review of your Self-Study we could not find evidence of such
accreditation for the primary clinical facility at Genesis Healthcare Partners.
You indicate that the facility is currently exploring its options for accreditation
with ASTRO, Joint Commission, or ACR, but the facility does not have this
accreditation yet.
2. Concern was expressed regarding the clinical rotation at the Naval Medical
Center. It appears that residency training is not explicitly included in the
contract between the Naval Center and SDSU. Furthermore, due to residents
“trainee status”, Naval Medical Center policy requires that all the trainees must
be directly supervised all times. As a result of this policy, the residents cannot
perform any clinical rotation activities such as QAs by themselves and a staff
physicist need to be with them all the time. Also, they cannot perform actual
clinical cases and they are only allowed to work on simulated plans and as a
result they do not experience the actual clinical treatment planning process.
This is very concerning. We suggest that the residents only spend 1-2 months
working on simulated cases at this facility and spend the remaining 3D/IMRT
planning rotation at one of the other facilities such as Genesis Health Care
Partners or Sharp Grossmont Hospital. We also recommend only one resident
at a time at Navy Medical Center.

Please advise us when these two concerns are resolved. At that time, we will continue
to evaluate your program without prejudice.

Yu Kuang, PhD Department of Health Physics and Diagnostic Sciences 4505 S Maryland Pkwy, Box 453037 Las Vegas NV
December 5, 2016
Dear Dr Kuang:
After careful consideration of your application, the Board of Directors of the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) has withheld accreditation of the Professional Doctorate Program in Medical Physics, Therapy Track, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The relevant text from the CAMPEP Policies and Procedures is printed below. Accreditation Withheld: This action is taken when a program is found not to comply with CAMPEP standards for accreditation and it appears that the changes that the program would have to make to qualify for accreditation could not be achieved within a reasonable period of time. After this decision, should accreditation be further pursued by the program, a new application shall be required, including the appropriate fee.
I attach a formal evaluation of your program which identifies non-compliance with standard 4.4 of the CAMPEP Standards for Accreditation of Residency Educational Programs in Medical Physics: The program director shall have at least five years of full-time post-graduate experience in medical physics in the specialization of the residency training program. According to CAMPEP Policies and Procedures, Section E12, you may appeal this decision and I also attached the relevant policy.
Please note that this decision does not affect accreditation of your master’s program which is valid until the end of 2018.
To protect the students currently in the program, you may consider accreditation of a residency program separate from the graduate program. Should you choose to pursue this option, we will make every attempt to fast-track this application.
Sincerely,
Edward F Jackson, PhD, President and Chairman
